The Examiner by Janice Hallett
English | 29 Aug. 2024 | ISBN: 1800810458 | True EPUB | 480 pages | 1 MB
Six Students. One Murder. Your Time Starts Now...

The mature students of Royal Hastings University's new art course have been trouble from day one. From acclaimed artist Alyson who seems oddly overqualified, to hapless Patrick who can barely operate design software, and city boy Cameron who blusters his way through assignments. Not to mention Jem, who's a gifted young sculptor... but cross her at your peril.
The year-long course is blighted by students setting fire to one another's artwork, a rumoured extra-marital affair and a disastrous road trip. But finally they are given their last assignment: to build an art installation for a local manufacturer. With six students who have nothing in common except their clashing personal agendas, what could possibly go wrong?
The answer is: murder. When the external examiner arrives to assess the students' coursework, he becomes convinced that a student was killed on the course and that the others covered it up. But is he right? Only a close examination of the evidence will reveal the truth. Your time starts now...

The Explorers: A New History of America in Ten Expeditions by Amanda Bellows
English | June 4, 2024 | ISBN: 0063227401 | 384 pages | MOBI | 38 Mb
A fascinating new history of America, told through the stories of a diverse cast of ten extraordinary-and often overlooked-adventurers, from Sacagawea to Matthew Henson to Sally Ride, who pushed the boundaries of discovery and determined our national destiny.

"Brilliantly imaginative, beautifully written." -David Blight, Pulitzer Prize-winning author ofFrederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom
"A considerable undertaking. ... ellows'skeen sense of story and her appreciation of her individual subjects tell us much that is new, and vividly." -Wall Street Journal
The archetype of the American explorer, a rugged white man, has dominated our popular culture since the late eighteenth century, when Daniel Boone's autobiography captivated readers with tales of treacherous journeys. But our commonly held ideas about American exploration do not tell the whole story-far from it.
The Explorersrediscovers a diverse group of Americans who went to the western frontier and beyond, traversing the farthest reaches of the globe and even penetrating outer space in their endeavor to find the unknown. Many escaped from lives circumscribed by racism, sexism, poverty, and discrimination as they took on great risk in unfamiliar territory. Born into slavery, James Beckwourth found freedom as a mountain man and became one of the great entrepreneurs of Gold Rush California. Matthew Henson, the son of African American sharecroppers, left rural Maryland behind to seek the North Pole. Women like Harriet Chalmers Adams ascended Peruvian mountains to gain geographic knowledge while Amelia Earhart and Sally Ride shattered glass ceilings by pushing the limits of flight.
InThe Explorers, readers will travel across the vast Great Plains and into the heights of the Sierra Nevada mountains; they will traverse the frozen Arctic Ocean and descend into the jungles of South America; they will journey by canoe and horseback, train and dogsled, airplane and space shuttle. Readers will experience the exhilarating history of American exploration alongside the men and women who shared a deep drive to discover the unknown.
Across two centuries and many thousands of miles of terrain, Amanda Bellowsoffers an ode to our country's most intrepid adventurers-and reveals the history of America in the process.

The Extinction of Experience: Being Human in a Disembodied World by Christine Rosen
English | September 10th, 2024 | ISBN: 0393241718 | 272 pages | True EPUB | 3.56 MB
A reflective, original invitation to recover and cultivate the human experiences that have atrophied in our virtual world.

We embraced the mediated life-from Facetune and Venmo to meme culture and the Metaverse-because these technologies offer novelty and convenience. But they also transform our sense of self and warp the boundaries between virtual and real. What are the costs? Who are we in a disembodied world?
In The Extinction of Experience, Christine Rosen investigates the cultural and emotional shifts that accompany our embrace of technology. In warm, philosophical prose, Rosen reveals key human experiences at risk of going extinct, including face-to-face communication, sense of place, authentic emotion, and even boredom. Considering cultural trends, like TikTok challenges and mukbang, and politically unsettling phenomena, like sociometric trackers and online conspiracy culture, Rosen exposes an unprecedented shift in the human condition, one that habituates us to alienation and control. To recover our humanity and come back to the real world, we must reclaim serendipity, community, patience, and risk.

Timothy Hall, "The Fall of Singapore 1942 (Routledge Library Editions: World War II in Asia)"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1138912441, 1138912425 | EPUB | pages: 230 | 3.1 mb
Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15 September 1942, but in 1941 Europeans on the island felt still untouched by war, lulled into security by the belief that Singapore was impregnable from the sea. However, the Planning Chief of Imperial Army Headquarters in Tokyo had realised a successful invasion could come from the north, down the Malay peninsula... Requests from less naive members of the allied forces for more men, arms and equipment were not filled. Authorities were unwilling to reveal to the civilian population the true situation. And so through accident or miscalculation, Singapore was totally unable to repel the Japanese attack. This accessible book, illustrated with black and white photos charts the course of these events.

The Fallen Fruit: A Novel by Shawntelle Madison
English | September 3, 2024 | ISBN: 0063290596 | True EPUB | 448 pages | 1 MB
Combining history and fantasy, a sweeping multi-generational epic in the vein of Kindred and The Time Traveler's Wife about a woman who travels through time to end a family curse that has plagued her ancestors for generations.

On a rainy day in May 1964, history professor Cecily Bridge-Davis begins to search for the sixty-five acres of land she inherited from her father's family. The quest leads her to uncover a dark secret: In every generation, one offspring from each Bridge family unit vanishes-and is mysteriously whisked back in time. Rules have been established that must be followed to prevent dire consequences:
Never interfere with past events.
Always carry your free Negro papers.
Search for the survival family packs in the orchard and surrounding forest. The ribbon on the pack designates the decade the pack was made to orient you in time.
Do not speak to strangers unless absolutely necessary.
With only a family Bible and a map marked with the locations of mysterious containers to aid her, Cecily heads to the library, hoping to discover the truth of how this curse began, and how it might be ended. As she moves through time, she encounters a circle of ancestors, including Sabrina Humbles, a free Black woman who must find the courage to seize an opportunity-or lose her heart; Luke Bridge, who traverses battlefields, slavery, and time itself to reunite with his family; Rebecca Bridge, a mother tested by an ominous threat; and Amelia Bridge, a young woman burdened with survivor's guilt who will face the challenge of a lifetime-and change Cecily's life forever. It is a race through time and against the clock to find the answers that will free her family forever.
Shawntelle Madison's historical fiction debut is an enthralling, page-turning family saga about the inevitability of fate, the invincibility of love, and the indelible bonds of family.

Victoria Saker Woeste, "The Farmer's Benevolent Trust: Law and Agricultural Cooperation in Industrial America, 1865-1945"
English | 1998 | ISBN: 0807847313, 0807824216 | EPUB | pages: 390 | 3.6 mb
Americans have always regarded farming as a special calling, one

imbued with the Jeffersonian values of individualism and self-
sufficiency. As Victoria Saker Woeste demonstrates, farming's
cultural image continued to shape Americans' expectations of
rural society long after industrialization radically transformed
the business of agriculture. Even as farmers enthusiastically
embraced cooperative marketing to create unprecedented industry-
wide monopolies and control prices, they claimed they were simply
preserving their traditional place in society. In fact, the new
legal form of cooperation far outpaced judicial and legislative
developments at both the state and federal levels, resulting in a
legal and political struggle to redefine the place of agriculture
in the industrial market.
Woeste shows that farmers were adept at both borrowing such
legal forms as the corporate trust for their own purposes and
obtaining legislative recognition of the new cooperative style.
In the process, however, the first rule of capitalism-every
person for him- or herself-trumped the traditional principle of
cooperation. After 1922, state and federal law wholly endorsed
cooperation's new form. Indeed, says Woeste, because of its
corporate roots, this model of cooperation fit so neatly with the
regulatory paradigms of the first half of the twentieth century
that it became an essential policy of the modern administrative
state.

The Fate of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the North Sea: Multiple Year Model Simulations of γ-HCH, α-HCH and PCB 153 By Dr. Tatjana P. Ilyina (auth.)
2007 | 132 Pages | ISBN: 3540681620 | PDF | 6 MB
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are harmful to human health and to the environment. Their fate in the marine environment is not yet fully understood. An ocean model (FANTOM) has been developed to investigate the fate of selected POPs in the North Sea. The main focus of the model is on quantifying the distribution of POPs and their aquatic pathways. This is the first time that a spatially-resolved, measurement-based ocean transport model has been used to study POP-like substances, at least on the regional scale. The model was applied for the southern North Sea and tested by studying the behaviour of g-HCH, a-HCH and PCB 153 in sea water. This model study proves that transport models, such as FANTOM, are capable of reproducing realistic multi-year temporal and spatial trends of selected POPs and can be used to address further scientific questions.

The Fight in the Clouds: The Extraordinary Combat Experience of P-51 Mustang Pilots During World War II by James P. Busha
English | March 15, 2014 | ISBN: 076034518X | 256 pages | PDF | 8.40 Mb
Get as close as you'll get to a World War II-era P-51 Mustang without flying one yourself with this spellbinding collection of tales from the men who actually flew the planes into war.

The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang first started appearing in real numbers in 1943, at the climax of the Allied campaign in World War II. Able to fly long ranges, it was the perfect escort, keeping bombers protected all the way from Allied bases in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific to a variety of Axis industrial targets and military installations and back. The Mustang would go on to provide pivotal air support on D-Day, and by the end of the war, the P-51 would be responsible for nearly half of all enemy aircraft shot down.
In The Fight in the Clouds, aviation writer and EAA Warbirds of America editor James P. Busha draws on interviews conducted with dozens of veteran P-51 pilots to trace the progress of war through the men's exciting, chronologically organized experiences. You'll encounter:Mustangs tangling with Soviet-built YaksA Mustang ace shooting down an Me 262 StormbirdAn epic long-range battle over the Pacific OceanAnd a score of other riveting accounts underscoring the P-51's versatility and its vital importance to the Allied victory
Bolstered by Busha's own commentary and historical analysis, along with a gallery of rare black-and-white period photographs, The Fight in the Clouds offers a cockpit-seat view of one of WWII's most celebrated aircraft and the men who bravely flew it into harm's way.

The Financial Activist Playbook
by Jasmine Rashid

English | 2024 | ISBN: 1523006366 | 241 pages | True PDF EPUB | 6.46 MB

The first and only comprehensive resource designed to empower everyday people with insider knowledge on moving money for a more equitable economy.
The money myths end here.
We don't need to choose between creating meaningful wealth for ourselves and our families today, or supporting social movements creating a better tomorrow. We don't all need to become certified financial "experts" to be economically empowered and make a real difference in our communities. And we're far from powerless when it comes to changing the financial system, just because we don't happen to belong to the 1%. Quite the opposite.
Financial activism is how everyday people radically reimagine money as a tool for widespread well-being, instead of a weapon of absurdly increasing inequality. It's the antidote to traditional finance that evokes confusion, trauma, and (in the best-case scenario) straight-up boredom. It's how we-the underestimated-collectively resist systems that cause harm to people and the planet for the sake of profit, reclaim wealth that's been stolen, and redesign our relationships with capital and one another, in ways big and small.
Going beyond tried financial literacy,The Financial Activist Playbookoffers eight accessible, actionable, "choose-your-own-adventure" strategies for readers to experiment with. Drawing on timely insider knowledge from the worlds of impact investing, social justice, and more, Rashid illuminates a treasure trove of stories: demonstrating how people power can flow big bucks out of extractive industries, and into the economy of care and abundance we deserve.
Playbook readers will be equipped to start visualizing and influencing the unique networks of wealth all around each of us, with strategies likeShifting collective budgets and bank dollars;Flexing our role as everyday philanthropists;Leveraging the magic of community investment; And so much more.
Laced with refreshing humor, empowering exercises, and a steadfast commitment to truth-telling, Rashid takes readers on an energizing ride of financial possibility and practicality that will reverberate for generations to come.

Robert R. Edgar, "The Finger of God: Enoch Mgijima, the Israelites, and the Bulhoek Massacre in South Africa"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0813941024 | EPUB | pages: 264 | 3.2 mb
On the morning of May 24, 1921, a force of eight hundred white policemen and soldiers confronted an African prophet, Enoch Mgijima, and some three thousand of his followers. Called the Israelites, they refused to leave their holy village of Ntabelanga, where they had been gathering since early 1919 to await the end of the world. While the Israelites maintained they were there to pray and worship in peace, the white authorities viewed them as illegally squatting on land that was not theirs. After many months of fruitless negotiations, the South African government sent an armed force to Bulhoek, a village in the Eastern Cape, to expel them. In the event that has come to be known as the Bulhoek massacre, police armed with rifles, machine guns, and cannons killed nearly two hundred Israelites wielding knobkerries, swords, and spears.

In The Finger of God, Robert Edgar reveals how and why the Bulhoek massacre occurred. Edgar asks: Why did Mgijima prophesize that the end of the world was imminent, and why did he summon his followers to Ntabelanga? Why did the South African government regard the Israelite encampment as a threat? Examining this clash between a government and a millenial movement, Edgar considers the Bulhoek massacre both as a signal event in South African history and as an example of similar conflicts worldwide.

Horace Palmer Beck, Arthur K D Healy, "The Folklore of Maine"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 1258201941, 1258096935 | EPUB | pages: 302 | 3.4 mb
"THIS is not a scholarly book in the pedantic sense nor is it intended to be one. Neither is it a complete collection of Maine folklore. Rather, it is a selection of tales, beliefs, superstitions, songs, and customs of people of English-speaking stock in Maine. It is a book that attempts to give illustrations of most of the major aspects of folklore that are, or have been within the last twenty years, extant in the state."-Horace P. Beck, Introduction

"There is no dearth of folklore in the little state of Maine. This book has placed some important examples of folklore into their historical contexts. A diversified sampling is given and we are surprised to learn how much of folklore is a disguise or an exaggeration of the real past."-Kirkus Review

The Forgotten History of America: Little-Known Conflicts of Lasting Importance from the Earliest Colonists to the Eve of the Revolution by Cormac O'Brien
English | July 26th, 2013 | ISBN: 0785830588 | 304 pages | True EPUB | 177.47 MB
"Introduces us to extraordinary men and women and landmark events that shaped the American character and the future of the nation." -Thomas J. Craughwell, author of Failures of the Presidents and Stealing Lincoln's Body

Today Americans remember 1776 as the beginning of an era. A nation was born, commencing a story that continues to this day. But the War of Independence also marked the end of another era-one in which many nations, Native American and European, had struggled for control of a vast and formidable wilderness.
This book returns to that long-ago age in which the clash between America's first peoples and the newcomers from Europe was still new. Author Cormac O'Brien's masterful storytelling reveals how actors as diverse as Spanish conquistadores, Puritan ministers, Amerindian sachems, mercenary soldiers, and ordinary farmers traded and clashed across a landscape of constant, often violent, change-and how these dramatic moments helped to shape the world around us.
From the founding of the first permanent European settlement in North America (1565) to the bloody chaos of the British frontier in Pontiac's War (1763), this vividly written narrative spans the two centuries of American history before the Revolutionary War. These lesser-known conflicts of the past are brought brilliantly to life, showing us a world of heroism, brutality, and tenacity-and also showing us how deep the roots of our own time truly run. Illustrated with more than 100 archival images.
"Set against a grand landscape that inspires both awe and terror, The Forgotten History of America depicts a continent emerging as both a bloody battleground between Native Americans and Europeans and a place where alien cultures began to mesh." -Joseph Cummins, author of The World's Bloodiest History

The Forgotten Tudor Royal: Margaret Douglas, Grandmother to King James VI & I by Beverley Adams
English | October 12th, 2023 | ISBN: 1399085905 | 224 pages | True EPUB | 20.96 MB
Brings to life one of Tudor England's most overlooked key players responsible for bringing about the marriage of her son Lord Darnley and Mary, Queen of Scots.

As the daughter and cousin of queens and the granddaughter and niece of kings, Lady Margaret Douglas was an integral part of the Tudor royal dynasty. A favorite of her uncle King Henry VIII and a close friend of Queen Mary I she courted scandal which saw her imprisoned in the Tower of London on more than one occasion. Against the orders of Queen Elizabeth I she Descriptionted the marriage of her eldest son Lord Darnley to Mary, Queen of Scots with disastrous consequences.
She came as close to the executioners block as she did to the throne of England, with some believing she had a right to be queen. A devout Catholic all her life, she lived at a time when religious division split the country in half yet she remained steadfast in her beliefs. A respected and revered lady on both sides of the border, Lady Margaret Douglas, later Countess of Lennox through her marriage, suffered much heartbreak and loss. Her husband and son were both murdered at the hands of the Scots and she outlived all her children.
Despite these tragedies she never gave up on her dream of uniting the thrones of England and Scotland which was realized through her grandson King James VI/I.
The story of her life is a remarkable tale of intrigue and survival and deserves to be more widely told.

Christopher Cullen, "The Foundations of Celestial Reckoning: Three Ancient Chinese Astronomical Systems "
English | ISBN: 1138101176 | 2016 | 434 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The Foundations of Celestial Reckoning gives the reader direct access to the foundational documents of the tradition of calculation created by astronomers of the early Chinese empire between the late second century BCE and the third century CE. The paradigm they established was to shape East Asian thought and practice in the field of mathematical astronomy for centuries to come. It was in many ways radically different from better known traditions of astronomy in other parts of the ancient world.

This book includes full English translations of the first three systems of mathematical astronomy adopted for use by imperial astronomical officials, together with introductory material explaining the origin and nature of each system, and a general introduction to the work as a whole. The translations, which are accompanied by the original Chinese text, give a consistent rendering of all technical terms, and include detailed explanatory notes. The text in which the second of the three systems is found also includes a unique collection of documents compiled around 178 CE by two experts in the field, one of whom was the author of the third system translated in this book. Using material transcribed from government archives of the two preceding centuries, these scholars carefully document and review controversies and large-scale official debates on astronomical matters up to their own time. Nothing equivalent in detail and clarity has survived from any other ancient culture. The availability of the totality of this material in English opens new perspectives to all historians of pre-modern astronomy.

The Gathering Storm: Prelude to the Spitfire Summer of 1940 (Battle of Britain) by Dilip Sarkar MBE
English | July 31, 2023 | ISBN: 1399056360 | 312 pages | MOBI | 17 Mb
Dilip Sarkar has studied the Battle of Britain period for a lifetime and is renowned for his meticulous research and evidence-based approach, setting events within the broadest possible context. In doing so, he has helped enrich our appreciation and understanding of the past.

In this, the first of a new seven volume series on the Battle of Britain, we have the background to the aerial conflict of the summer of 1940 revealed in great detail and told comprehensively as never before. No stone has been left unturned, no angle unexplored. This meticulous approach the research, combined with the human stories and events, many revealed for the first time, tells what Dilip calls 'the Big Story'. The development of air power, the creation of Britain's defenses, the German side, the Home Front and political events are all covered - and much more.
After considering the background threads prior to the outbreak of war in 1939, this book then describes the developing conflict on land, sea and in the air. The German invasion of Norway, the Fall of France and the air fighting over Dunkirk are all explored, along with Hitler's actual preferred policy towards Britain, which at first was one of blockade - not invasion.
The author, with justification, questions the validity of the Battle of Britain's official start-date being 10 July 1940, evidencing the fact that the fighting actually began eight days earlier. From that date onwards, a day-by-day, hour-by-hour, account of the fighting is provided, giving due recognition to those aircrew lost or wounded before 10 July 1940, and whose names are not, therefore, found amongst 'The Few'. Due accord is also given to the Royal Navy, and efforts of both Bomber and Coastal commands, emphasizing just what a 'big' story this actually is - far from simply concerning a handful of Spitfire and Hurricane pilots.
Through diligent research with crucial official primary sources and personal papers, Dilip unravels many myths, often challenging the accepted narrative. This is not, however, simply another dull record of combat losses and claims, far from it. Drawing upon unique first-hand accounts from a wide-range of combatants and eyewitnesses, along with the daily Home Intelligence Reports and the papers of politicians such as Italian Foreign Minister Count Ciano, this really is an unprecedented approach to understanding the build-up to and times of the Battle of Britain.
