The empires of the ancient Sumerians, Akkadians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese were underpinned by slavery, where one person could be owned by another, and their obedience and labor were forced by the threat of violence or even death. Some of these people were prisoners captured during wars, some were sold into slavery to pay debts, while others were born into slavery. In many ancient empires, slaves accounted for anything from one-third to half of the total population. All were regarded as property, few were entitled to even the most basic human rights, and most lived lives of abject poverty and suffering.
By the sixteenth century, slavery had become less important as a part of the international economy, but the discovery of the Americas changed that fundamentally. New lands were conquered, first by Spain and Portugal and then by other European nations. Vast new areas were available for cultivation, but that required a large workforce. A new trade began in slaves purchased in Africa and shipped to the Caribbean, North, Central, and South America.
The transatlantic slave trade would see a staggering total of around 12 million people forcibly transported from Africa to the Americas, often in the most appalling conditions. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a new movement arose that questioned the moral and ethical basis of this trade. This is the story of the origin, rise, and eventual collapse of the transatlantic slave trade.

It was named after several early colleges, including Freeland Seminary, established in 1848, and the Pennsylvania Female College, established in 1851. These institutions were succeeded by Ursinus College in 1869. A pioneer in women's education, Ursinus became coeducational in 1880. Trappe and Collegeville were formally incorporated as separate boroughs in 1896.

Even if you do not like crossword puzzles, you may end up loving these. Designed for mother-tongue or completely fluent speakers of Portuguese Brazilian wanting to improve their English skills, the puzzles may also be entertaining to English speakers. They are formatted so that each puzzle can be solved in 15 to 30 minutes. The vocabulary gradually becomes harder across puzzles thus increasing the challenge as you progress. Each book has 100 puzzles and each puzzle covers some 30 word pairs (equaling 3000 challenges!). These are truly pleasant, if not addictive, crossword puzzles for language learning. Learning a language is always difficult. To ease the pain, hints are provided in small script at the bottom of each page, though these are selected to prevent an engineered solution to the puzzle. Full solutions are provided in the back of the book. These two features (hints and verifiable solutions), force the reader to decipher a word's meaning and serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. One recent reviewer of this series noted "As a Peace Corps Volunteer ... this is definitely a fun way to keep up the language skills ... The series has a whole bunch of "rarely spoken" languages, widely unknown to us in the Western world."
