The Genetic Book of the Dead: A Darwinian Reverie by Richard Dawkins, Jana Lenzova
English | September 17, 2024 | ISBN: 0300278098 | 360 pages | PDF | 72 Mb
From a renowned biologist and best-selling author, a whole new way of looking at living organisms: reading them as documents describing ancient worlds

A Financial Times Best Book of 2024: Science
*Named Science Book of the Year by Times (UK)
*A Guardian Best Ideas Book of 2024
"Intellectually sparkling and beautifully crafted."-Adrian Woolfson, Wall Street Journal
"A glorious affair. . . . Arguably [Dawkins's] most joyous ode to the wonders that evolution has wrought in the animal world."-Philip Ball, Science
An exquisitely camouflaged lizard has a desiccated landscape of sand and stones "painted" on its back. Its skin can be read as a description of an ancient desert, a world in which its ancestors survived. Such descriptions are more than skin deep, however. They penetrate the very warp and woof of the entire animal.
In this groundbreaking exploration of the power of Darwinian evolution and what it can reveal about the past, Richard Dawkins shows how the body, behavior, and genes of every living creature can be read as a book-an archive of the worlds of its ancestors. In the future, a zoologist presented with a hitherto unknown animal will be able to decode its ancestral history, to read its unique "book of the dead." Such readings are already uncovering the remarkable ways animals overcome obstacles, adapt to their environments, and, again and again, develop remarkably similar ways of solving life's problems.
From the author of The Selfish Gene comes a revolutionary, richly illustrated book that unlocks the door to a past more vivid, nuanced, and fascinating than anything we have seen.

The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation: From Homer to the Hellenistic Age
by Francis Cairns
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3111481069 | 463 Pages | True ePUB | 2.51 MB

The Greek Poetry of Summons and Invitation assembles and studies for the first time the numerous poetic invitations and summonses of Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic Greece. These poems and passages come from epic, lyric, dramatic, epigrammatic, and epigraphic sources. Most of them are by celebrated Greek poets ― Homer, Sappho, Alcaeus, Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes, Theocritus, Callimachus, Apollonius, among others. Analysis of this poetic corpus associates it with the 'kletikon', an ancient rhetorical genre of content, and reveals everywhere in it the commonplaces of that genre, thus allowing new sub-types of the kletikon to be discovered, and the development of the genre over the centuries to be charted. When individual invitations and summonses are viewed against this generic background, their originality and merits emerge along with their poets' unique voices. Each summons and invitation is presented, translated, discussed in detail, and, when part of a longer work, linked to its context. This volume is directed to scholars and students of Classics; scholars of the Latin equivalent genre, the 'vocatio', which persisted into the Renaissance, can also find in it an intellectual model.

Matthias Häussler, "The Herero Genocide: War, Emotion, and Extreme Violence in Colonial Namibia "
English | ISBN: 1805391518 | 2024 | 306 pages | PDF | 1177 KB
Drawing on previously inaccessible and overlooked archival sources, The Herero Genocide undertakes a groundbreaking investigation into the war between colonizer and colonized in what was formerly German South-West Africa and is today the nation of Namibia. In addition to its eye-opening depictions of the starvation, disease, mass captivity, and other atrocities suffered by the Herero, it reaches surprising conclusions about the nature of imperial dominion, showing how the colonial state's genocidal posture arose from its own inherent weakness and military failures. The result is an indispensable account of a genocide that has been neglected for too long.

Fabrice Correia, "The Logic of Grounding "
English | ISBN: 1009180517 | 2025 | 75 pages | PDF | 1204 KB
The concept of grounding - of a fact obtaining in virtue of other facts - has been a topic of intensive philosophical and logical investigation over roughly the past two decades. Many philosophers take grounding to deserve a central place in metaphysical theorizing, in great part because it is thought to do a better job than other concepts - e.g., reduction and supervenience - at capturing certain phenomena. Studies on the logic of grounding have largely been conducted with this philosophical background in mind. In this Element, I try to give a faithful picture of the contemporary development of the logic of grounding in a way that is both reasonably comprehensive and reasonably systematic.

Jane MacLaren Walsh, "The Man Who Invented Aztec Crystal Skulls: The Adventures of Eugène Boban"
English | ISBN: 1789200954 | 2018 | 348 pages | PDF | 17 MB
Eugène Boban began life in humble circumstances in Paris, traveled to the California Gold Rush, and later became a recognized authority on pre-Columbian cultures. He also invented an entire category of archaeological artifact: the Aztec crystal skull. By his own admission, he successfully "palmed off" a number of these crystal skulls on the curators of Europe's leading museums. How could that happen, and who was this man? Detailed are the travels, self-education, and archaeological explorations of Eugène Boban; this book also explores the circumstances that allowed him to sell fakes to museums that would remain undetected for over a century.

The Many Faces of Language Games
by Jesús Padilla Gálvez, Margit Gaffal
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3111575357 | 188 Pages | True ePUB | 1.54 MB

Wittgenstein used the concept of language games to refer to all forms of linguistic expression in practical contexts and to the myriad ways in which signs are used in language. He used the term to specify speaking as an activity and to relate it to a form of life. Wittgenstein was well aware that his proposal for "language games" did not solve the central problems of language. Until today, the essential characteristics of the concept remain unspecified.
The contributors in this volume analyze the reasons for the difficulties in understanding the concept and propose new essential characteristics and contents, by examining language games such as certainty and error, belief, strategy, and their linguistic foundations.

The Many Faces of the Lady of Elche: Essays on the Reception of an Iberian Sculpture
Marlène Albert Llorca, Pierre Rouillard
English | 2024 | ISBN: 2503610307 | 160 Pages | PDF | 11.2 MB

On 4 August 1897, farm workers in Elche - the site of ancient Ilici - discovered an Iberian sculpture of a woman that dated from the fifth- fourth centuries BCE. French archaeologist Pierre Paris dubbed this figure 'the Lady of Elche', and promptly purchased the sculpture on behalf of the Louvre Museum. There, she drew the attention of European scholars who were intrigued by her stylistic features, finally concluding that she bore witness to the existence of a specifically Iberian art. Since her discovery, the Lady of Elche has been a source of fascination not only for scholars, but also for artists, and she has become an icon of regional and national identity across Spain. This volume, co-written by an archaeologist and an anthropologist and translated here into English for the first time, seeks to explore the importance of the Lady of Elche, both for students of the past, and for the peoples of Iberia. The authors here explore not only what we know - and still do not know - about her creation, but also engage with key questions about what she represents for the men and women of our time who have questioned, manipulated, admired, loved, and often reinvented the singular beauty of this iconic figure.

The Monster Within: A True Story of Bloodthirst, Brutality and Barbaric Evil (True Crime) by Ryan Green
English | September 17, 2023 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0CJ981J53 | 133 pages | EPUB | 3.22 Mb
Prostitutes and animals could no longer satisfy Peter Kürten's sexual deviancy. During a burglary of a local tavern, he stumbled upon a nine-year-old girl asleep in her bed. He strangled her, slashed her throat with a pocket knife, and orgasmed upon hearing her blood drip to the floor.

His crimes were halted by World War I and an eight-year prison sentence but he unleashed his urges with a spate of brutal murders in 1929 earning him the nickname "The Düsseldorf Monster".
No one was safe. He committed ferocious attacks, sexual assaults and murder against men, women and children. He used blunt objects, sharp implements or his bare hands, before drinking their blood for sexual satisfaction.
The Monster Within is a chilling account of Peter Kurten, one of the most terrifying serial killers in true crime history. Ryan Green's riveting narrative draws the reader into the real-live horror experienced by the victims and has all the elements of a classic thriller.
CAUTION: This book contains descriptive accounts of abuse, extreme violence and animal cruelty. If you are sensitive to this material, it might be advisable not to read any further.

John Bengson, "The Moral Universe"
English | ISBN: 0198793588 | 2024 | 400 pages | PDF | 7 MB
The Moral Universe marks an importance advance in metaethical thinking, offering the most sustained and sophisticated development of nonnaturalistic moral realism to date. Employing a novel philosophical method, it addresses central questions in metaethics concerning the nature of moral reality, its fundamental laws, its relation to the natural world, and its normative authority. The authors advance new ways of answering these questions, contending that moral standards regarding what to do and how to be are not only objectively authoritative, but essentially so.Rather than arising from personal schemes or collective ideals, morality flows from the nature of things. One of the principal aims of the book is to show how this view accommodates and explains a wide range of data concerning the metaphysical and normative dimensions of morality. Along the way, the book offers novel characterizations of moral realism and nonnaturalism, defends and explains the existence of substantive moral conceptual truths, supplies a new treatment of moral supervenience, substantiates the categoricity and importance of moral reasons, and presents a strategy for identifying the source of morality. Exemplifying a commitment to the integrity of moral philosophy,

The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle: The Secret of San Gennaro's Blood
by Francesco de Ceglia
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032442603 | 436 Pages | True ePUB | 11 MB

This book examines Naples's patron saint, Gennaro, the history of his blood relic, and the mystery of its periodical liquefaction.
Three times a year, Neapolitans gather to witness the recurring phenomenon of the liquefaction of San Gennaro's blood. From the seventeenth century to the present, crowds have prayed to the city's patron for protection from fires, earthquakes, plagues, droughts, and the fury of Mt. Vesuvius. In the "miraculous" moment of transposition from solid to liquid, the faithful seek respite from the ills of the world in the saintly blood, a visual reminder of the blood of Christ spilled for their salvation. In Naples, the periodical liquefaction of San Gennaro's blood is not officially recognized as miraculous by the Catholic Church, which now more cautiously refers to it as a prodigy. Nevertheless, for centuries, this phenomenon has been called "a miracle" in liturgical texts approved by the ecclesiastical authority and in the words of bishops, cardinals, popes, and saints. However, not everyone agreed. This volume follows the efforts of theologians, alchemists, charlatans, and scientists who, through the centuries, have tried to answer questions such as: Is the liquefaction of San Gennaro's blood really a miracle? If not, how is it possible to explain a phenomenon that occurs only on dates liturgically relevant to the saint?
The Natural History of a Neapolitan Miracle will be of great value to those interested in Religious Studies, Italian Studies, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, as well as the History of Science, Anthropology, and Ethnography.

Corinne Dale, "The Natural World in the Exeter Book Riddles "
English | ISBN: 1843844648 | 2017 | 227 pages | PDF | 2 MB
An investigation of the non-human world in the Exeter Book riddles, drawing on the exciting new approaches of eco-criticism and eco-theology.

Humanity is a dominant presence in the Exeter Book riddle collection. It is frequently shown using, shaping and binding the physical world in which it lives. The riddles depict master and craftsman and use the familiar human worldas a point of orientation within a vast, overwhelming cosmos. But the riddles also offer an eco-centric perspective, one that considers the natural origins of man-made products and the personal plight of useful human resources.
This study offers fresh insights into the collection, investigating humanity's interaction with, and attitudes towards, the rest of the created world. Drawing on the principles of eco-criticism and eco-theology, the study considers the cultural and biblical influences on the depiction of nature in the collection, arguing that the texts engage with post-lapsarian issues of exploitation, suffering and mastery. Depictions of marginalised perspectives ofsentient and non-sentient beings, such as trees, ore and oxen, are not just characteristic of the riddle genre, but are actively used to explore the point of view of the natural world and the impact humanity has on its non-human inhabitants. The author not only explores the riddles' resistance to anthropocentrism, but challenges our own tendency to read these enigmas from a human-centred perspective.
Corinne Dale gained her PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London.

Keith Stringer, "The Normans and the 'Norman Edge': Peoples, Polities and Identities on the Frontiers of Medieval Europe"
English | ISBN: 1472459784 | 2019 | 348 pages | EPUB | 713 KB
Modern historians of the Normans have tended to treat their enterprises and achievements as a series of separate and discrete histories. Such treatments are valid and valuable, but historical understanding of the Normans also depends as much on broader approaches akin to those adopted in this book. As the successor volume to Norman Expansion: Connections, Continuities and Contrasts, it complements and significantly extends its findings to provide a fuller appreciation of the roles played by the Normans as one of the most dynamic and transformative forces in the history of medieval 'Outer Europe'. It includes panoramic essays that dissect the conceptual and methodological issues concerned, suggest strategies for avoiding associated pitfalls, and indicate how far and in what ways the Normans and their legacies served to reshape sociopolitical landscapes across a vast geography extending from the remoter corners of the British Isles to the Mediterranean basin. Leading experts in their fields also provide case-by-case analyses, set within and between different areas, of themes such as lordship and domination, identities and identification, naming patterns, marriage policies, saints' cults, intercultural exchanges, and diaspora-homeland connections.

Miriam Eliav-Feldon, "The Origins of Racism in the West"
English | ISBN: 1107687268 | 2013 | 348 pages | PDF | 22 MB
Is it possible to speak of western racism before the eighteenth century? The term 'racism' is normally only associated with theories, which first appeared in the eighteenth century, about inherent biological differences that made one group superior to another. Here, however, leading historians argue that racism can be traced back to the attitudes of the ancient Greeks to their Persian enemies and that it was adopted, adjusted and re-formulated by Europeans right through until the dawn of the Enlightenment. From Greek teachings on environmental determinism and heredity, through medieval concepts of physiognomy, down to the crystallization of attitudes to Indians, Blacks, Jews and Gypsies in the early modern era, they analyse the various routes by which racist ideas travelled before maturing into murderous ideologies in the modern western world. In so doing this book offers a major reassessment of the place of racism in pre-modern European thought.

The Oxford Handbook of Greek Cities in the Roman Empire
by Anna Heller, Martin Hallmannsecker
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0192870939 | 819 Pages | PDF | 81 MB

This handbook provides the first comprehensive treatment of the Greek cities in the Roman Empire. The poleis are studied here both as urban forms, with a specific organization of space and specific public buildings, and as socio-political entities, with specific institutions and social hierarchies. The contributions cover all the important aspects of civic life and present the on-going debates on the degree of integration and autonomy, uniformization, and diversity of the Greek civic model in the Roman Empire. One of the main guidelines of the handbook is the issue of the impact of Roman rule on the long-lasting Greek model of political, social, and spatial organization.
Geographically, the volume covers the whole Roman Empire, with a focus on regions where the Greek polis was the dominant form of organization, such as mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, Asia Minor, Syria, and the Black Sea region. In addition to that, the Greek cities of Sicily and Egypt as well as more isolated Greek settlements such as Cyrene in North Africa are also considered. The chronological scope of the handbook runs from a community's integration into the Roman Empire (varying depending on the region) until the 3rd c. AD, when the epigraphic documentation strongly decreases and some important changes make way for the transition to Late Antiquity.

The Oxford Handbook of Power, Politics, and Social Work
by Rajendra Baikady, Jaroslaw Przeperski
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0197650899 | 967 Pages | PDF | 11.8 MB

This Handbook explores the current dynamics, threats, and opportunities of social work education in terms of its origin, growth and development within different regions and political regimes. The book aligns with overarching contemporary themes such as changing governance structures around the world; digitalization and globalization; and decolonization and also in line with the advancement of global agendas for social work and social development led by the IASSW, ICSW & IFSW. This contemporary text engages comprehensively with diverse political systems across the world and explores the interactions with, and implications for social work policy, practice, and education in these countries and globally. Contributions in this handbook encompasses multiple and diverse voices from the social work fraternity in the Global North and Global South in discussing the policies related to social work education, current social work practice and challenges in social work educational program delivery. While the most appealing feature of this handbook is the range of countries and political systems covered, it also exclusively looks into the role of ' Power' and the 'Politics' within the context of social work education and how policies are reimagined in social work education and practice.

The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World: Volume IV: Cyrene to Metapontion
by Paul Cartledge and Paul Christesen
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0199383553 | 860 Pages | PDF | 57 MB

The ancient Greek world consisted of approximately 1,000 autonomous polities scattered across the Mediterranean basin and was remarkable for both its diversity and its uniformity. As Greeks dispersed throughout the Mediterranean, the different environmental and human ecosystems they encountered created important differences among widely scattered settlements: each Greek community developed its own unique set of socio-political institutions and social practices. Nonetheless, despite their dispersal and diversity, Greek communities were bound together by a network of commercial, cultural, diplomatic, and military ties and shared important commonalities, most notably language and religion.
The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World, a collaborative effort by more than forty eminent scholars, offers twenty-one detailed and comprehensive studies of key sites from across the Greek world in the period between c. 750 and c. 480 BCE. During that period, Greeks confronted a series of demographic, political, social, and economic challenges and generated an array of responses that transformed the ways in which they lived, worked, and interacted. Much of what is now seen as distinctive about Greek culture-such as democracy, stone temples, and nude athletics-first developed during the Archaic period.
The series is organized alphabetically by polis. Volume IV contains detailed and up-to-date studies of Cyrene, Delphi, Macedonia, Massalia, and Metapontion. Together with the other volumes in the series, the Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World offers a new and unique resource for the study of ancient Greece that will transform how we understand a crucial era in antiquity.
