The McDonnell F2H Banshee holds a unique place in the annals of United States naval aviation. Like its contemporaries in the North American FJ Fury and the Grumman F9F Panther, the original design evolved into a significantly different aircraft.
In 2016, Detail & Scale published F2H Banshee in Detail & Scale, Part 1: Prototypes Through F2H-2 Variants. That book covered the early Banshee variants that, alongside Grumman F9F Panthers, were among the first jet fighters to serve in large numbers and to see combat with the U. S. Navy and Marines. F2H-2 fighters and F2H-2P photo-reconnaissance Banshees were used extensively by both services during the Korean War. This new title in the Detail & Scale Series picks up where that book left off and covers the larger F2H-3 and F2H-4 Banshees that were developed from the earlier Banshee variants, primarily to be all-weather interceptors. Because they were larger in size than the previous variants, the F2H-3 and F2H-4 became known as "Big Banshees," or more commonly "Big Banjos."
Although the F2H-3 and F2H-4 were based on the original design and shared many commonalities with their predecessors on the McDonnell production lines, there were noticeable and important differences, both physical and operational. This new title discusses these differences in considerable detail. We begin with a Developmental History that traces how the all-weather Banshees were designed, developed, and produced to fill a pressing need for a jet fighter that could perform the fleet defense mission in any kind of weather, day or night. Changes made to the airframe and features that were added are discussed and illustrated.
The second chapter focuses specifically on the F2H-3 and F2H-4 in separate sections, explaining the major difference between the two variants and covering the squadrons to which they were assigned. A third section in the chapter is devoted to the Canadian F2H-3s flown by the Royal Canadian Navy, the only non-U. S. operator of any Banshee variant. Numerous photographs and art profiles illustrate the markings used by many of the squadrons that flew the "Big Banshees."
The use of several different paint schemes on the F2H-3 and F2H-4 is a very interesting story itself, and it involves the Navy's experiment with carrier-based jet fighters in a natural metal finish. This is covered in the third chapter, and the reasons why the multiple schemes were developed, tried, and used operationally are explained and illustrated with both photographs and artwork. The Canadian paint scheme is also covered in this chapter.
As is the case with all titles in the Detail & Scale Series of publications, the details of the aircraft are the primary focus. The Banshee Details chapter includes more than 120 photographs and illustrations covering the aircraft extensively inside and out. Among the nine different sections of this chapter is one on the weapons certified for use on the F2H-3 and F2H-4 as well as the under-wing stations on which they were carried. A large majority of the photographs in the Banshee Details chapter were taken specifically for this publication.
The book concludes with a Modelers Section that reviews and illustrates the model kits of the "Big Banshee" that are available to the scale modeler.

The author put together a team of expert contributors who worked with him to make this the most accurate and in-depth book possible on the Tomcat. Among these are people who flew and maintained the F-14 and others who worked at Grumman during the time when the Tomcat was designed and built. In addition to these experts, many aviation photographers have contributed scores of general and detail photographs that provide extensive coverage.
Detail & Scale published two earlier books on the F-14 in 1979 and 1982. It has since published three comprehensive works on the colors and markings of the Tomcat, and this new book completes the coverage of the F-14 with all the hallmarks of the Detail & Scale Series of books.
The book begins with two chapters that look at the Tomcat's history. The first covers the developmental history, while the second looks at the operational history, including the Tomcat's extensive use in combat. The third chapter provides an in-depth coverage of the specific variants of the F-14 that were produced, as well as a detailed look at the various systems and how they evolved during the operational life of the Tomcat. Numerous photographs supplement an informative text in each of these chapters.
The focus of the books in the Detail & Scale Series is on the details of the aircraft. Almost all of the 295+ photographs are in color, and 234 detail photographs show every detail of the Tomcat, inside and out. For example, there are 34 cockpit photos showing all of the details and differences in the F-14A, F-14B, and F-14D cockpits, and they are accompanied by detailed captions that explain and point out the features and how the cockpit displays and controls changed from one variant to the next.

Designed under great secrecy and in considerable haste by a team led by Clarence L. "Kelly" Johnson during World War II, Lockheed's P-80 Shooting Star will forever hold a significant place in the history of American military aviation as the first jet fighter to reach operational status with the U. S. Army Air Forces. The USAAF later became the U. S. Air Force in 1947, and with the creation of the U. S. Air Force, the Shooting Star was redesignated the F-80. It would go on to serve as a fighter-bomber in the Korean War. It would become the first USAF jet fighter to score an aerial victory, and one would be credited with the first jet-on-jet aerial kill in history. RF-80s would become the first jet-powered photographic reconnaissance aircraft to serve with the USAF.
F-80 Shooting Star in Detail & Scale provides a comprehensive look at this important and historic jet fighter, beginning with a history chapter that traces its inception during World War II through its use in the Korean War and later service with Air National Guard squadrons. This is followed by a chapter that takes a closer look at each of the different variants of the Shooting Star, from the XP-80 prototype through the QF-80 drones and DF-80 drone directors. Because the P-80/F-80 was the first jet fighter to become operational with the Air Force, quite a few were used for various developmental experiments and tests, and these are also covered in the variants chapter. The next chapter takes a look at the Shooting Star's combat service in the Korean War, both as a fighter-bomber and as a tactical reconnaissance aircraft. But the primary focus of all volumes in the Detail & Scale Series of publications is to illustrate the aircraft in extensive detail, and the Shooting Star Details chapter provides the most detailed look at the F-80 and RF-80 that has ever been published. More than 125 photographs and illustrations show the Shooting Star in incredible detail, both inside and out. Photographs from the files of Lockheed and the U. S. At the age of twelve, on hearing that Sir Ross Smith had broken the England-Australia aero record in a Vickers Vimy, Roly Alderson decided that he wanted to fly. Denied a secondary education, orphan Roly was an accomplished engineer by the time he arrived at Cambridge in his home-built car. He left with a degree, a racing Bentley and a pilot's licence.
Alderson had already logged several hundred hours when recruited by Imperial Airways in 1933. His skills were quickly recognized, and he was selected to fly Lord Willingdon, the Viceroy and Governor General of India, on his farewell tour of India. Alderson's Holy Grail, nevertheless, was to 'fly boats', and it was not long before Roly had joined these venerated ranks on the new route to South Africa.
while serving as a Captain on Imperial Airways' prestigious New York-Bermuda service, Alderson reported a number of serious concerns regarding carburettor icing on his Short Empire flying boat Cavalier. His prescience was ignored, and on 21 January 1939, a day after penning a final warning, Cavalier was forced down into the empty wastes of the Atlantic. Due to Alderson's consummate airmanship and the bravery of heroine passenger Edna Watson, ten of the thirteen souls on board survived. Their miraculous rescue by the tanker Esso Baytown, part of a huge international search and rescue effort, after eleven gruelling hours in cold shark-infested waters, dominated the world's headlines.
Alderson returned to duty on the long-distance flying boat routes to Singapore and Durban, but, following the German invasion of France in 1940, he was transferred to the treacherous West Africa run. After a brush with a U-boat off Sierra Leone, he was tasked with ferrying General de Gaulle back to the UK from Nigeria. After avoiding a suspected poisoning attempt at Freetown and Luftwaffe interception over the Bay of Biscay, the General personally thanked Alderson for his safe return.
Later, in 1940 the British Government bought three huge Boeing flying boats to maintain the wartime transatlantic link, and Alderson was promoted to the roster for these. The hours in these behemoths were prodigious, routing via Portugal, West Africa, and Brazil, with the fear of enemy attack a constant and very real threat. Only V.I.P.s and vital mail were carried, although Alderson did once deliver President Roosevelt's personal gift to Winston Churchill: a critical supply of Havana cigars!
Adventure abounds in this remarkable story of a flying boat pilot and captain in both war and peace: racing Bentleys, landing on beaches, black-tie dinner with the Luftwaffe, landing on the Nile, flying across India, and espionage and intrigue in Lisbon.
