Von September 1939 bis Mai 1945 wurden im Reservelazarett der Tübinger Universitätsnervenklinik ungefähr 6000 Soldaten und Angehörige der Wehrmacht behandelt. Ausgehend von den Krankenakten dieser Patienten zeichnet Jörg Wagenblast in seiner medizinhistorischen Lokalstudie den Behandlungsalltag in dieser Einrichtung nach. Der Autor rückt vor allem Soldaten, die auf die Schrecken des Krieges mit psychischer Krankheit reagierten, in den Blick: Wie ordneten die Ärzte derartige Fälle in ihr ätiologisches Gefüge ein, das von einer unbegrenzten Belastbarkeit der menschlichen Seele ausging? Wie entschieden sie, wenn es darum ging, derartige Störungen vor dem Hintergrund einer radikal durchgreifenden Wehrmachtjustiz von Simulation abzugrenzen? Zu welchen Mitteln griffen sie, um diese Soldaten wieder bereit zu machen für den Einsatz an der Front? Anschaulich und differenziert zeigt der Autor auf, wie sich die Lazarettärzte durch die Einbindung in militärische Strukturen immer stärker mit den Zielen des kriegsführenden NS-Regimes identifizierten und unter den Bedingungen des Krieges die Grenzen zwischen Therapie und Disziplinierung zerfließen. Dabei werden aber auch die Besonderheiten deutlich, welche die Praxis in Tübingen von der in Berlin koordinierten Militärpsychiatrie abhoben.
