Tycho van der Hoog, "Comrades Beyond the Cold War: North Korea and the Liberation of Southern Africa "
English | ISBN: 0197811108 | 2025 | 368 pages | PDF | 3 MB
North Korea was an important player in the decolonization of Africa. Freedom fighters across the continent received vital assistance from Pyongyang, and almost all southern African independence leaders travelled to the North Korean capital at some point, in search of support. This alliance has continued into the twenty-first century, with African postcolonial governments throwing a lifeline to Pyongyang's increasingly isolated economy by hiring North Korean companies, despite United Nations sanctions.

Tycho van der Hoog examines the relations between victorious southern African liberation movements and North Korea, from the 1960s to the present. He explains why African presidents sang and danced at parties in Pyongyang, and why North Korean books were translated into Swahili and Afrikaans. He reveals how African soldiers were trained in guerrilla warfare by North Korean instructors, and how North Korean laborers construct monuments in Africa in the shape of AK-47s. And he explores the question of how revolutionary regimes, motivated by a need for survival, work together to defy the global order.
Based on extensive research across four continents-including recently disclosed African liberation archives and Korean diplomatic cables-this innovative study is the first book on African-North Korean relations.

Martin Vöhler, "Concepts and Functions of Philhellenism: Aspects of a Transcultural Movement "
English | ISBN: 3110715716 | 2021 | 299 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Key aspects of philhellenism - political self-determination, freedom, beauty, individual greatness - originate in antiquity and present a complex reception history. The force of European philhellenism derives from ancient Roman idealizations, which have been drawn on by European movements since the Enlightenment. How is philhellenism able to transcend national, cultural and epochal limits? The articles collected in this volume deal with (1) the ancient conceptualization of philhellenism, (2) the actualization and politicization of the term at the time of the European Restoration (1815-30), and (3) the transformation of philhellenism into a pan-European movement. During the Greek struggle for independence the different receptions of philhellenism regain a common focus; philhellenism becomes an inextricable element in the creation of a pan-European identity and a starting point for the regeneration and modernization of Greece. - It is easy to criticize the tradition of philhellenism as being simplistic, naïve, and self-serving, but there is an irreducibly utopian element in later philhellenic idealizations of ancient Greece.

Concepts of Power in Kierkegaard and Nietzsche By J. Keith Hyde
2016 | 255 Pages | ISBN: 0754665747 | EPUB | 1 MB
The name Friedrich Nietzsche has become synonymous with studies in political power. The application of his theory that the vast array of human activities comprises manifestations of the will to power continues to influence fields as diverse as international relations, political studies, literary theory, the social sciences, and theology. To date, the introduction of Søren Kierkegaard into this discussion has been gradual at best. Long derided as the quintessential individualist, the social dimension of his fertile thought has been neglected until recent decades. This book situates Kierkegaard in direct dialogue with Nietzsche on the topic of power and authority. Significant contextual similarities warrant such a comparison: both severely criticized state Lutheranism, championed the self and its imaginative ways of knowing against the philosophical blitzkrieg of Hegelianism, and endured the turbulent emergence of the nation-state. However, the primary justification remains the depth-defying prescience with which Kierkegaard not only fully anticipates but rigorously critiques Nietzsche's power position thirty years in advance.

Conceptual Trends in Quantum Chemistry by E. S. Kryachko, J. L. Calais
English | PDF | 1994 | 257 Pages | ISBN : 0792326210 | 23.1 MB
The rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full Ecclesiastes What is quantum chemistry? The straightforward answer is that it is what quan tum chemists do. But it must be admitted, that in contrast to physicists and chemists, "quantum chemists" seem to be a rather ill-defined category of scientists. Quantum chemists are more or less physicists (basically theoreticians), more or less chemists, and by large, computationists. But first and foremost, we, quantum chemists, are conscious beings. We may safely guess that quantum chemistry was one of the first areas in the natural sciences to lie on the boundaries of many disciplines. We may certainly claim that quantum chemists were the first to use computers for really large scale calculations. The scope of the problems which quantum chemistry wishes to answer and which, by its unique nature, only quantum chemistry can only answer is growing daily. Retrospectively we may guess that many of those problems meet a daily need, or are say, technical in some sense. The rest are fundamental or conceptual. The daily life of most quantum chemists is usually filled with grasping the more or less technical problems. But it is at least as important to devote some time to the other kind of problems whose solution will open up new perspectives for both quantum chemistry itself and for the natural sciences in general.

Concerning the Spiritual in Art (Penguin Classics) by Wassily Kandinsky
English | 30 May 2024 | ISBN: 024138480X | True EPUB | 192 pages | 45 MB
A seminal text in the history of modern art, from one of the most famous artists of the twentieth century

'Art is the language that speaks to the soul'
Why do we make art? In Concerning the Spiritual in Art Wassily Kandinsky, one of the earliest and most famous abstract painters, argued against 'art for art's sake'. Exploring form and colour, spirituality and tradition, Kandinsky instead predicted a future for painting in its potential to redirect the attention of viewers away from the shallow materialism of the modern world toward the more profound intellectual and emotional concerns of their interior lives. His revolutionary work became a landmark in modern art history, helping to usher in the age of non-representational painting. This new translation also includes Kandinsky's later essay, 'The Question of Form', in which he interrogates and sharpens many of his earlier ideas.
A new translation by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp
With an introduction by Lisa Florman

Gladys Mirugi-Mukundi, "Conflict and Poverty in Africa "
English | ISBN: 1032545550 | 2025 | 428 pages | EPUB | 1212 KB
The contributors to this book examine the conceptual issues relating to the link between conflict and poverty as well as presenting case studies of countries often regarded as 'hot spots' for conflict in Africa. They also explore the roles of regional and sub-regional bodies and institutions in addressing the causes of poverty and mitigating the impacts of conflict on vulnerable and marginalized groups.

Africa is often regarded as the epicentre of conflicts worldwide. Virtually every part of the continent is currently engulfed in one form of conflict or another. Beyond the loss of life, conflicts have brought untold hardship to millions and have derailed social and economic development on the continent. Written by African academics, this book is divided into three sections, the first of which discusses the factors that fuel conflicts and the nature and impacts of conflicts on vulnerable groups. The second section comprises case studies of South Sudan, Central African Republic, Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, Uganda, and Cameroon. These countries are representative of the sub-regional dynamics of Africa - west, east, central, and south - reflecting the diversity of the continent. The final section examines the role of key institutions and bodies in Africa in mitigating the impact of conflict on the socioeconomic lives of the people in the region. Bodies discussed include the African Union, Economic Community of West African States, Southern African Development Community, and the East African Community.

Riccardo Alcaro, "Conflict Management and the Future of EU Foreign and Security Policy: Relational Power Europe "
English | ISBN: 103290299X | 2025 | 140 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This book analyses how the European Union (EU) has dealt with crises and conflicts, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Iran's nuclear dispute and Syria's civil war, to understand the peculiar nature of its role in international security. Rather than focusing on the institutional set‑up of the EU's foreign and security policy, the authors look at the 'outer' world, concentrating on crises and conflicts impinging on Europe's security. They argue that the EU and its member states' policies are constrained by systemic factors such as acute geopolitical rivalries and the fragmentation of regional governance systems, as well as by multi‑source internal contestation of policies across member states. Hence, building on pragmatist‑informed analysis they show that the EU's actorness in international security is first and foremost constituted by interactions with its domestic and systemic context, and as such it should be understood as a 'relational power'.

Conformal Geometry and Quasiregular Mappings by Matti Vuorinen
English | PDF | 1988 | 228 Pages | ISBN : 3540193421 | 14.6 MB
This book is an introduction to the theory of spatial quasiregular mappings intended for the uninitiated reader. At the same time the book also addresses specialists in classical analysis and, in particular, geometric function theory. The text leads the reader to the frontier of current research and covers some most recent developments in the subject, previously scatterd through the literature. A major role in this monograph is played by certain conformal invariants which are solutions of extremal problems related to extremal lengths of curve families. These invariants are then applied to prove sharp distortion theorems for quasiregular mappings. One of these extremal problems of conformal geometry generalizes a classical two-dimensional problem of O. Teichmüller. The novel feature of the exposition is the way in which conformal invariants are applied and the sharp results obtained should be of considerable interest even in the two-dimensional particular case. This book combines the features of a textbook and of a research monograph: it is the first introduction to the subject available in English, contains nearly a hundred exercises, a survey of the subject as well as an extensive bibliography and, finally, a list of open problems.

Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge (Routledge Classics), 2nd Edition by Karl Popper
English | May 2, 2002 | ISBN: 0415285933, 0415285941 | True EPUB/PDF | 607 pages | 2.9/2 MB
Conjectures and Refutations is one of Karl Popper's most wide-ranging and popular works, notable not only for its acute insight into the way scientific knowledge grows, but also for applying those insights to politics and to history. It provides one of the clearest and most accessible statements of the fundamental idea that guided his work: not only our knowledge, but our aims and our standards, grow through an unending process of trial and error.

Constant Disconnection: The Weight of Everyday Digital Life
by Kenzie Burchell
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1503632350 | 317 Pages | PDF | 3 MB

The weight of constant digital connection is the default condition of working life, home life, and everyday personal life - driving us to engage more with platforms than with people, a new state of constant disconnection that we cannot escape. Overflowing email inboxes, deluges of mobile phone notifications and torrents of social media posts-the flow of communication in its abundance is today's individualized interface for interpersonal and professional practices. Communication technologies and their use are both the needle and the thread of the wider social tapestry of everyday contemporary life. This ever-changing communication environment is where the neoliberal economic policies of the West and the commercial imperatives of the platform and data-mining industries meet. It is where the contradictions they produce can be felt day-to-day by citizens-turned-users. How does it feel to live at the pressure points of intersecting economic realities and why does it matter? Drawing on extensive sociological research, Burchell examines how individuals try to manage connection as participation in everyday life and how, on a larger scale, the ever-expanding knowledge, communication, and data-driven economies depend on the very pressures that result from our disparate communication needs. With so much time spent managing the pressures of our communication environment, we often overlook the way media technologies produce systemic tensions that are reshaping how we interact with each other and what we understand to be social connection today.

Constantinople Through the Ages: The Visible City from Its Foundation to Contemporary Istanbul
by Diederik Burgersdijk, Fokke Gerritsen
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9004710973 | 465 Pages | PDF | 63 MB

Constantinople through the Ages aims to map the long and rich history of Constantinople, from its foundations to the present. Starting point is the 'visible city'; the ways in which continuity and change in history are still observable in present-day Istanbul. The contributors, each of them foremost experts in their fields, address the interaction between the different layers of time from various sources and perspectives. They explore how later inhabitants received and appropriated the legacy of their predecessors, and how the city's tangible and intangible heritage has been perceived and (ab)used in both the past and the present.

Constitutional Intolerance: The Fashioning of the Other in Europe's Constitutional Repertoires
by Mariëtta D. C. van der Tol
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1009473956 | 193 Pages | PDF | 1.93 MB

Constitutional Intolerance offers a deeper reflection on intolerance in politics and society today, explaining why minorities face the contestation of their public visibility, and how the law could protect them. Van der Tol refers to historical practices of toleration, distilling from it the category of 'the other' to the political community, whose presence, representation, and visibility is not self-evident and is often subject to regulation. The book considers 'the other' in the context of modern constitutions, with reference to (ethno)religious, ethnic, and sexual groups. Theoretical chapters engage questions about the time and temporality of otherness, and their ambivalent relationship with (public) space. It offers examples from across the liberal-illiberal divide: France, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Poland. It highlights that vulnerability towards intolerance is inscribed in the structures of the law, and is not merely inherent to either liberalism or illiberalism, as is often inferred.

Constitutionalism, Democracy and Religious Freedom: To be Fully Human By Hans-Martien ten Napel
2017 | 309 Pages | ISBN: 1138647152 | EPUB | 1 MB
In both Europe and North America it can be argued that the associational and institutional dimensions of the right to freedom of religion or belief are increasingly coming under pressure. This book demonstrates why a more classical understanding of the idea of a liberal democracy can allow for greater respect for the right to freedom of religion or belief. The book examines the major direction in which liberal democracy has developed over the last fifty years and contends that this is not the most legitimate type of liberal democracy for religiously divided societies. Drawing on theoretical developments in the field of transnational constitutionalism, Hans-Martien ten Napel argues that redirecting the concept and practice of liberal democracy toward the more classical notion of limited, constitutional government, with a considerable degree of autonomy for civil society organizations would allow greater religious pluralism. The book shows how, in a postsecular and multicultural context, modern sources of constitutionalism and democracy, supplemented by premodern, transcendental legitimation, continue to provide the best means of legitimating Western constitutional and political orders.

Why did Jesus come? The traditional argument is that he came to redeem us from sin and destroy death, and thus reverse the fall. Many have long found this unsatisfactory, because it centres human deficit, rather than divine abundance. In this study, Samuel Wells traces his notion of 'being with' right into the Trinity itself, and in dialogue with Maximus the Confessor, Duns Scotus and Karl Barth, among others, articulates a truly Christocentric theology in which God's means and God's ends are identical. In the process, Wells not only greatly expands the compass of 'being with,' showing its scriptural and doctrinal significance, but also offers a constructive account of the incarnation, cross and resurrection of Jesus that out-narrates conventional atonement theories. Wells correspondingly proposes an account of sin, evil, suffering and death that accords with this revised understanding. The result is a compelling and transformational proposal in incarnational theology.

Constructing Antichrist: Paul, Biblical Commentary, and the Development of Doctrine in the Early Middle Ages By Kevin L. Hughes
2005 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 0813214157 | PDF | 1 MB
The figure of Antichrist has gripped the Christian imagination for two thousand years. But Antichrist does not spring fully from the pages of Scripture. Rather, he emerges over a millennium of reflection on hints and clues scattered throughout Scripture and Christian tradition. In particular, the image of Antichrist is tied in a vital way to the man medieval Christians knew simply as 'the Apostle'―St. Paul. Constructing Antichrist engages readers with the question: what does Paul have to do with the Antichrist? Integrating new scholarship in apocalypticism and the history of exegesis, this book is the first longitudinal study of the role of Paul in apocalyptic thought. Readers will gain new appreciation for the theological weight of medieval exegesis generally and for the persistence of apocalypticism in the medieval Christian imagination as it dared to envision the Adversary. The author argues that the western doctrines of Antichrist and the Last Days are entwined with the development of medieval New Testament exegesis. The Second Letter to the Thessalonians―a brief and much-debated apocalyptic text in the New Testament―is the most important locus for doctrinal speculation about Antichrist and the coming End. The author carefully examines commentaries on 2 Thessalonians from the fourth to the twelfth centuries and finds that they provide the 'architecture' for the developing doctrine of Antichrist as it is portrayed in later medieval art and literature. By the twelfth century, this tradition of reflection distills from the various early interpretations a classic, synthetic understanding of Antichrist and the End that forms an authoritative consensus for centuries.ABOUT THE AUTHOR:Kevin L. Hughes is Assistant Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Villanova University. The author of numerous books and articles, his most recent publications include Church History: Faith Handed On and a translation of Second Thessalonians: Two Early Medieval Apocalyptic Commentaries.PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:"The Second Letter to the Thessalonians was crucial in the construction of the figure of the Antichrist. While scholars have recognized its importance, its interpretation has never received such an intense, systematic, and thorough treatment. . . . This book will soon become and is likely long to remain the authoritative treatment on its topic in any language."―Kevin Madigan, Harvard Divinity School"Kevin L. Hughes's Constructing Antichrist makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the growth and development of the idea of Antichrist from late Antiquity to the high Middle Ages....[T]his book contains a wealth of information on the early medieval exegetical traditions of Antichrist....Anyone interested in early medieval exegesis in general, and the theme of Antichrist in particular, will learn a great deal from it." ― Lawrence Besserman, TMR "[A] readable . . . history of the exegesis and theological reflection on the 2 Thessalonians' formulation of the figure of the Antichrist from Paul through the Western developments into the eleventh century." ― Jeffrey Gros, Religious Studies Review""In six clearly written chapters the author leads the reader on a fascinating investigation of the apocalyptic imagination concerning the Antichrist beginning with St. Paul himself, continuing through the early Middle Ages. . . . [A] very important book . . . . This is a book for every theology library. It could be used with great profit in upper division undergraduate courses in both the history of theology as well as the history of exegesis." ― Michael W. Blastic, Horizons"Constructing Antichrist comprehensively examines early medieval exegesis of Second Thessalonians, especially its second chapter, in which references to "the Son of

Constructing National Culture: Music and the Performing Arts in Mongolia
Baatarnaran Tsetsentsolmon
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3700188781 | 177 Pages | PDF | 10 MB

Mongolia has faced rapid ideological shifts towards global cosmopolitan perspectives since the collapse of state socialism in the 1990s. Contemporary Mongolian music and the performing arts are dynamic and market-oriented, and these new artistic practices contrast with existing institutional patterns and social settings inherited from the previous regime. In the field of artistic practices, there is a conflict between the old state structure, which was left intact as a vessel, and new individual creative content. This book explores cultural spaces, practices, and discourses forming the concept of 'national culture' in both state socialist and post-socialist contexts in Mongolia. Further illuminating the social memory and the role of the state in cultural production, this book advances scholarship with expansive perspectives on state socialist cultural politics, as well as on the (dis)continuity between cultural values and their social effects on the two social orders. Using new data on recent transformations in cultural practices since the 2000s, especially in the spheres of music and the performing arts, this book deconstructs current conceptions of cultural landscapes.
