Early Ryukyuan History: A New Model
by Gregory Smits
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0824897633 | 345 Pages | PDF | 19 MB

The Ryukyu islands have been inhabited by humans for over 30,000 years. Their modern population, however, did not come from stone-age ancestors, nor did distinctive forms of Ryukyuan culture, such as sacred groves or stone-walled castles, emerge from within the islands. Instead, different groups of people lived in the Ryukyu islands at various points in history. Starting with the earliest extant human remains and ending with the formation of a centralized state in the early 1500s, Early Ryukyuan History traces the people, culture, technologies, goods, and networks that entered different parts of Ryukyu over time. In the process, it synthesizes decades of research in archaeology and anthropology, recent advances in genetic evidence, and conventional documentary sources to advance a new model for the early development of the Ryukyu islands, thoroughly rewriting early Ryukyuan history.
Taking a multidisciplinary approach grounded in archaeology, this resource presents an updated framework for understanding early Ryukyu along with a new narrative featuring a fascinating cast of characters. Linked by the ocean into the East China Sea, the early Ryukyu islands were never isolated. People and technologies arrived from across the sea and became the prime movers of early Ryukyuan society. The most consequential of these external agents were waves of immigrants, mainly from the Japanese islands, who settled the Ryukyu islands during the eleventh and twelfth centuries and replaced the islands' previous Jōmon population. While the physical environment of the Ryukyu islands was not conducive to cereal agriculture, the islands were well situated for trading and raiding, and trade became the driving force behind societal development.
In Early Ryukyuan History, Gregory Smits reappraises the most fundamental questions and topics in early Ryukyuan history, providing new models of migration and settlement, regional trade, political geography, warfare, and state formation.

Lydia Schumacher, "Early Thirteenth-Century English Franciscan Thought "
English | ISBN: 3110682400 | 2021 | 341 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
The thirteenth century was a dynamic period in intellectual history which witnessed the establishment of the first universities, most famously at Paris and Oxford. At these and other major European centres of learning, English-born Franciscans came to hold prominent roles both in the university faculties of the arts and theology and in the local studia across Europe that were primarily responsible for training Franciscans. This volume explores the contributions to scholarship of some of the leading English Franciscans or Franciscan associates from this period, including Roger Bacon, Adam Marsh, John Pecham, Thomas of Yorke, Roger Marston, Robert Grosseteste, Adam of Exeter, Richard Rufus of Cornwall, and Bartholomew of England. Through focussed studies of these figures' signature ideas, contributions will provide a basis for drawing comparisons between the English Franciscan school and others that existed at the time, most famously at Paris.

Earthborn Democracy: A Political Theory of Entangled Life (Critical Life Studies) by Joel Alden Schlosser, Ali Aslam, David W. McIvor
English | September 10, 2024 | ISBN: 0231216416, 0231216424 | True EPUB | 232 pages | 2.3 MB
Ecological crises threaten all forms of life on earth. Democracy too is endangered, as popular discontent, elite malfeasance, and unresponsive institutions imperil its survival. Present political concepts have proven inadequate to meeting these challenges, and their inadequacies are themselves symptoms of the failures of prevailing political, cultural, and ecological stories and practices.

This book offers a new vision of ecological and participatory democratic life for a time of crisis. Identifying myth and ritual as key resources for contemporary politics, Earthborn Democracy excavates practices and narratives that illustrate the interdependence necessary to inspire ecological renewal. It tells stories of multispecies agency and egalitarian political organization across history, from ancient Mesopotamia and the precolonial Americas to contemporary social movements, emphasizing Indigenous traditions and resistance. Resonating across these practices and stories past and present is a belief that we are all―human as well as nonhuman―earthborn, and this can serve as the basis for reimagining democracy. Allying visionary political theory with environmental activism, Earthborn Democracy provides a foundation and a guide for collective action in pursuit of earthly flourishing.

In Ebla , Paolo Matthiae presents the results of 47 years of excavations at this fascinating site, providing a detailed account of Ebla's history and archaeology.

Ebla grew from a small Early Bronze Age settlement into an important trading and political centre, which endured until its final destruction in c. 1600 BC . The destruction of its royal palace c. 2300 BC was particularly significant as it preserved the city's rich archives, offering a wealth of information on its history, economy, religion, administration, and daily life. The discovery of Ebla is a pivotal moment in the history of archaeological investigations of the twentieth century, and this book is the result of all the excavation campaigns at Tell Mardikh- Ebla from 1964 until 2010, when field operations stopped due to the war in Syria.

Ecclesiastical Law, Clergy and Laity: A History of Legal Discipline and the Anglican Church By Neil Patterson
2018 | 174 Pages | ISBN: 0815352646 | EPUB | 1 MB
Discipline in an ecclesiastical context can be defined as the power of a church to maintain order among its members on issues of morals or doctrine. This book presents a scholarly engagement with the way in which legal discipline has evolved within the Church of England since 1688. It explores how the Church of England, unusually among Christian churches, has come to be without means of effective legal discipline in matters of controversy, whether liturgical, doctrinal, or moral. The author excludes matters of blatant scandal to focus on issues where discipline has been attempted in controversial matters, focussing on particular cases. The book makes connections between law, the state of the Church, and the underlying theology of justice and freedom. At a time when doctrinal controversy is widespread across all Christian traditions, it is argued that the Church of England has an inheritance here in need of cherishing and sharing with the universal Church. The book will be a valuable resource for academics and researchers in the areas of law and religion, and ecclesiastical history. .

Ecological Vulnerability: The Law and Governance of Human-Wildlife Relationships
by Katie Woolaston
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1316511995 | 246 Pages | PDF | 1.66 MB

Humans are responsible for biodiversity loss in many related and sometimes conflicting ways. Human-wildlife conflict, commonly defined as any negative interaction between people and wildlife, is a primary contributor to wildlife extinction and a manifestation of the destructive relationship that people have with wildlife. The author presents this 'wicked' problem in a social and legal context and demonstrates that legal institutions structurally deny human-wildlife conflict, while exacerbating conflict, promoting values consistent with individual autonomy, and ignoring the interconnected vulnerabilities shared by human and non-human species alike. It is the use of international and state law that sheds light on existing conflicts, including dingo conflict on K'Gari-Fraser Island in Australia, elephant conflict in Northern Botswana, and the global wildlife trade contributing to COVID-19. This book presents a critical analysis of human-wildlife conflict and its governance, to guide lawyers, scientists and conservations alike in the transformation of the management of human-wildlife conflict.

Ecology for the 99%: Twenty Capitalist Myths Debunked by Frédéric Legault, Arnaud Theurillat-Cloutier, Alain Savard, translated by Charles Simard
English | March 19, 2024 | ISBN: 1771136456 | True EPUB | 276 pages | 3.3 MB
If everyone-from Emmanuel Macron to Jeff Bezos, and even Coca Cola-is green, why is the environmental crisis growing at an alarmingly rapid rate? The world is already experiencing the impact of climate crisis, but we are not equally responsible for its violent effects. Some of those who claim to be helping the planet are actually making things worse. To avoid being duped by false allies and to create an ecology for the 99%, we must discuss a radical topic: the exit from capitalism. Ecology for the 99% provides inspiration for building grassroots environmental movements through a lively discussion of the most persistent capitalist myths. It presents compelling evidence for why carbon market policies will fail, why a capitalist economy cannot be based on renewable energy sources, and why we should be protesting against overproduction, not overconsumption.

Ecology for the 99% is an antidote to apathy and a bulwark against false leads. Time is running out, we can't afford to take any wrong turns.

Econometrics: Statistical Foundations and Applications by Phoebus J. Dhrymes
English | PDF | 1974 | 605 Pages | ISBN : 0387900950 | 101.4 MB
T his book was written, primarily, for the graduate student in econo- metrics. Its purpose is to provide a reasonably complete and rigorous exposition of the techniques frequently employed in econometric research, beyond what one is likely to encounter in an introductory mathematical statistics course. It does not aim at teaching how one can do successful original empirical research. Unfortunately, no one has yet discovered how to communicate this skill impersonally. Practicing econometricians may also find the integrated presentation of simultaneous equations estimation theory and spectral analysis a convenient reference.

Daron Acemoglu, "Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy"
English | ISBN: 0521671426 | 2009 | 434 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
What forces lead to democracy's creation? Why does it sometimes consolidate only to collapse at other times? Written by two of the foremost authorities on this subject in the world, this volume develops a framework for analyzing the creation and consolidation of democracy. It revolutionizes scholarship on the factors underlying government and popular movements toward democracy or dictatorship. Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson argue that different social groups prefer different political institutions because of the way they allocate political power and resources. Their book, the subject of a four-day seminar at Harvard's Center for Basic Research in the Social Sciences, was also the basis for the Walras-Bowley lecture at the joint meetings of the European Economic Association and Econometric Society in 2003 and is the winner of the John Bates Clark Medal. Daron Acemoglu is Charles P. Kindleberger Professor of Applied Economics at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received the 2005 John Bates Clark Medal awarded by the American Economic Association as the best economist working in the United States under age 40. He is the author of the forthcoming text Introduction to Modern Economic Growth. James A. Robinson is Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is a Harvard Faculty Associate at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and a member of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research's Program on Institutions, Organizations, and Growth. He is coeditor with Jared Diamond of the forthcoming book Natural Experiments in History.

Educating for Global Competence: Preparing Our Students to Engage the World, 2nd Edition
by Veronica Boix Mansilla and Anthony W. Jackson
English | 2023 | ISBN: 1416631585 | 178 Pages | True PDF | 7 MB

Preparing students to participate fully in today's and tomorrow's world demands that we nurture their global competence, and this book shows teachers how to do just that.
In a world rife with rapid change, environmental vulnerabilities, and racial inequities, this second edition of Educating for Global Competence poses an urgent question: What matters most for students to understand about our complex and interconnected world so they can participate fully in its future? Veronica Boix Mansilla and Anthony W. Jackson identify the key skills, values, and attitudes that K-12 students must cultivate to thrive in the 21st century.
The book features a practical framework for global competence education. The framework's four dimensions focus on developing students' capacity to
* Examine local, global, and intercultural issues.
* Understand and appreciate the perspectives and worldviews of others.
* Engage in open, appropriate, and effective interactions across cultures.
* Take action toward collective well-being and sustainable development.
This edition includes many new authentic examples of integrating global competence into curriculum, instruction, and assessment across subject areas. Through these examples, we see the practical ways educators can prepare young people to see the complexities of the world and to develop the skills needed to explore and solve problems on a global scale. Educating for Global Competence shows teachers, administrators, and policymakers how they can leverage their influence to make teaching for global competence a compelling endeavor that yields world-changing results.

Education as the Practice of Eco-Social-Cultural Change By Mark Fettes, Sean Blenkinsop
2023 | 124 Pages | ISBN: 3031458346 | EPUB | 1 MB
The current ecological crisis is the consequence of entrenched attitudes, discourses and behaviours in human societies worldwide, fostered and reinforced through modern educational traditions, processes and institutions. This book envisions a radical transformation of education to focus on the mutual flourishing of human societies with the rest of life on Earth. In part, the authors suggest approaching this as a problem of systemic design, incorporating principles that challenge and undermine key premises of the Capitalocene-the socio-economic-political landscape sustaining the current educational regime. Tracing the implications of this transition, they review core assumptions of modern Western culture that need to shift, and identify a wide range of relevant capacities and practices grouped under four complementary educator "stances" for eco-social-cultural change.

Education: Does God Have an Opinion? By Israel Wayne
2017 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 168344034X | EPUB | 1 MB
Education: Does God Have an Opinion? is a Scriptural guide designed to help you disciple and educate your children in agreement with God's Word. Many Christians believe God doesn't care about how children are schooled or the methods of education that are employed. This book uses the Bible to prove otherwise. Author and speaker, Israel Wayne, faithfully applies the teaching of Scripture to the issue of education to see what God has to say about this vital topic. Within these pages, Christian parents will find a truly biblical philosophy of education and learn to strategically and systematically apply it to core subjects. There is almost no topic that is as relevant to the future of Christianity or as controversial as the education of children. Students in school classrooms spend thousands of hours being instructed by people who are not their parents. Truths about God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the inerrancy of the Bible are most often stripped from the curricula used to teach them. The anti-God misinformation campaign of public schools works directly against the faith you are responsible to build into your children's lives through discipleship. There is almost no way to calculate the power and influence this has on your family and their eternity. The future of your child's education and, therefore, his or her life is ultimately in your hands as a parent. Education: Does God Have an Opinion? will give you discernment helping you understand how the One True God sees the issue of education. Christian homeschooling families call Education: Does God Have an Opinion? a "must read" and report that it has helped them: Formulate a vision for their family's home educationHave a biblical defense for their decision to homeschoolAdhere to God's way and not the world's way of raising their childrenStay true to their convictions as the primary disciples of their children

English | 2025 | ISBN: 3111337111 | 307 Pages | PDF | 1.65 MB

Did religion disappear with modernization and the secularization reforms that changed the relation between religion and state throughout the European empires and nation states from late nineteenth century onwards? Or was religion rather transformed becoming a part of the new social and national imaginaries on the road from European empires to African, Middle Eastern, European Union- and Post-Soviet nation states? What are the historical roots behind the divisions of state, church and education that characterized the late nineteenth and during the twentieth century? What has been the role of education in this context, both with regard to political reforms targeting the education systems and with regard to broader public enlightenment efforts and modernization of the state?
Connecting scholars across the fields of history and historical sociology of education, church history and historical religion research and political history, and covering the time span from the early modern period and up until the present, this volume explores how education reform has functioned as an arena for the political project of secularization and in which way this contributed to transforming and revitalizing religion.

Efficient Joint Analysis of Surface Waves and Introduction to Vibration Analysis by Giancarlo Dal Moro
English | EPUB | 2020 | 273 Pages | ISBN : 3030463028 | 174.2 MB
This book bridges the gap between theory and practice, showing how a detailed definition of the shear-wave velocity (VS) profile can be efficiently obtained using limited field equipment and following simple acquisition procedures.

It demonstrates how surface waves (used to define the VS profile) and vibration data (used to describe the dynamic behaviour of a building) can be recorded using the same equipment, and also highlights common problems, ambiguities and pitfalls that can occur when adopting popular methodologies, which are often based on a series of simplistic assumptions.
Today, most national and international building codes take into account a series of parameters aimed at defining the local seismic hazard. Sites are characterised based on the local VS profile, and the dynamic behaviour of existing buildings is defined through the analysis of their eigenmodes. The book includes a series of case studies to help readers gain a deeper understanding of seismic and vibration data and the meaning (pros and cons) of a series of techniques often referred to as MASW, ESAC, SPAC, ReMi, HVSR, MAAM and HS. It also provides access to some of the datasets so that readers can gain a deeper and more concrete understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects.

Ein Mann, der wurde, was er konnte: Dag Hammarskjöld zum 50. Todestag By Müller, Andreas Th.; Troy, Jodok
2012 | 177 Pages | ISBN: 3428137981 | PDF | 1 MB

2014 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 3534264347 | EPUB | 1 MB
