Rakesh Ankit, "India in the Interim: The 1947-1951 Government"
English | ISBN: 1009525263 | 2025 | 266 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book looks at the governmental interregnum from August 1947 to the start of the first general election in October 1951, and is a narrative of some of its intermediate moments in light of contemporary politics. It is a multi-track chronicle, which draws attention to its discrete, if not determining, impact on the following decade of consolidation. While it is also a map of the prime minister's words and actions, drawn as it is mainly from his papers, it is embedded in the government. It describes a time of transitional governance in independent India's early political history and gives a glimpse of its multiple individual traits, identity tensions, and institutional trends. The Nehruvian gaze traced here shows what a constant flux governing in those unsettled post-partition years was.

Indictment: The Criminal Justice System on Trial By Benjamin Perrin
2023 | 259 Pages | ISBN: 1487506279 | EPUB | 1 MB
Based on first-hand interviews with survivors, people who have committed offences, and others on the frontlines, Indictment puts the Canadian criminal justice system on trial and proposes a bold new vision of transformative justice. #MeToo. Black Lives Matter. Decriminalize Drugs. No More Stolen Sisters. Stop Stranger Attacks. Do we need more cops or to defund the police? Harm reduction or treatment? Tougher sentences or prison abolition? The debate about Canada's criminal justice system has rarely been so polarized - or so in need of fresh ideas. Indictment brings the heartrending and captivating stories of survivors and people who have committed offences to the forefront to help us understand why the criminal justice system is facing such an existential crisis. Benjamin Perrin draws on his expertise as a lawyer, former top criminal justice advisor to the prime minister, and law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada to investigate the criminal justice system itself. Indictment critiques the system from a trauma-informed perspective, examining its treatment of victims of crime, Indigenous people and Black Canadians, people with substance use and mental health disorders, and people experiencing homelessness, poverty, and unemployment. Perrin also shares insights from others on the frontlines, including prosecutors and defence lawyers, police chiefs, Indigenous leaders, victim support workers, corrections officers, public health experts, gang outreach workers, prisoner and victims' rights advocates, criminologists, psychologists, and leading trauma experts. Bringing forward the voices of marginalized people, along with their stories of survival and resilience, Indictment shows that a better way is possible.

Indigenous Heritage and Identity of the Last Elephant Catchers in Northeast Thailand
by Alisa Santikarn
English | 2025 | ISBN: 904856199X | 260 Pages | True PDF | 3 MB

In 2019, when Mew Salangam passed away at 91, newspapers across Thailand described him as belonging to the "last generation of elephant doctors." Mew was a member of the Kui Ajiang community in Thailand, an Indigenous group living in the Northeast known for catching elephants. Sometime beginning in the 1950s, this practice gradually came to an end.
Indigenous Heritage and Identity of the Last Elephant Catchers in Northeast Thailand examines how the end of elephant catching has affected the heritage and identity of the Kui Ajiang, offering an analysis that calls for close attention to the broader currents of Thai history and the development of Thai environmental and cultural heritage policies. Furthermore, the term Authorised Environmental Discourse (AED) is introduced in tandem with Laurajane Smith's Authorised Heritage Discourse (AHD) to portray how heritage embedded in nature and culture reflects impacts of political authority and how a community responds to threats of loss and challenges to the authenticity of its traditions.

Indigenous War Painting of the Plains: An Illustrated History
by Arni Brownstone
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0806193646 | 299 Pages | PDF | 30 MB

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains practiced an archival art-narrating war exploits in large-scale paintings executed on animal hide robes, shirts, tipi covers, and tipi liners. Essentially autobiographical, the paintings were worn and lived in by the men whose war exploits they portrayed, and were made to be "read" by the public at large. Executed in a pictorial narrative style and documenting actual events, these paintings blend visual art and history.
Indigenous War Painting of the Plains is the first comprehensive look at this important North American art form, covering the full corpus of war paintings from fourteen tribes across the plains.
Two impediments have previously made such a book impractical: photography alone falls short of rendering war paintings for the printed page, and only about half of the surviving works have reliable documentation on their cultural origins. Arni Brownstone surmounts these difficulties by producing precise electronic redrawings and by using well-documented paintings to inform poorly documented examples, bolstered by a careful examination of collection histories. Featuring some 300 photographs and electronic redrawings, the book focuses on 83 paintings organized into four chapters covering the paintings of tribes associated with a specific geographical sphere of artistic influence. Four appendixes feature paintings combined with "translations" by Indigenous collaborators who had intimate knowledge of the depicted events.
Offering vivid access to the key works of war painting preserved in 37 museums throughout North America and Europe, Indigenous War Painting of the Plains illuminates distinctions between painting styles of different tribes, reveals how they influenced one another and changed over time, and conveys a deep understanding of how war painting developed in relation to profound social changes in Plains Indian cultures.

Lynn Anthonissen, "Individuality in Language Change "
English | ISBN: 3110725711 | 2021 | 339 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Linguists have typically studied language change at the aggregate level of speech communities, yet key mechanisms of change such as analogy and automation operate within the minds of individual language users. Drawing on lifespan data from 50 authors and the intriguing case of the special passives in the history of English, this study addresses three fundamental issues relating to individuality in language change: (i) how variation and change at the individual level interact with change at the community level; (ii) how much innovation and change is possible across the adult lifespan; (iii) and to what extent related linguistic patterns are associated in individual cognition. As one of the first large-scale empirical studies to systematically link individual- and community-based perspectives in language change, this volume breaks new ground in our understanding of language as a complex adaptive system.

Indo-European Mythology and Religion: Essays By Alexander Jacob
2019 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 0648499618 | EPUB | 1 MB
The essays presented in this collection are based on Alexander Jacob's earlier works, Ātman: A Reconstruction of the Solar Cosmology of the Indo-Europeans, Hildesheim: Georg Olms, 2005 and Brahman: A Study of the Solar Rituals of the Indo-Europeans, Hildesheim: Georg Olms, 2012. They expand on the cosmological and religious themes discussed in these books with special reference to the origins and development of the Indic and European spiritual traditions. Those familiar with the earlier works will not be surprised that Dr. Jacob's view of the term 'Indo-European' is rather more comprehensive than the more restricted term 'Āryan' that has hitherto been widely used as a synonym of it. And those interested in the Āryan ethos itself - chiefly on account of the German use of the term during the last war - may be surprised to learn that it does not consist in nationalistic virtues so much as in spiritual discipline and development - and that this development is characteristic of the religions of very extended and diversified branches of the Indo-European family.I. Indonesia's COVID-19 Infodemic: A Battle for Truth or Trust? By Yatun Sastramidjaja
2023 | 36 Pages | ISBN: 9815104691 | PDF | 1 MB
Besides being one of the countries most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesia also experienced a severe "infodemic": an overabundance of contradictory information-including misinformation and disinformation-on COVID-19. This infodemic hampered pandemic mitigation efforts, resulting in non-compliance with public health measures and delays to the national vaccination programme in the first six months of the pandemic due to widespread vaccine hesitancy or vaccine refusal. Furthermore, it fomented public distrust of the government and other institutions. On Indonesian social media, this infodemic engendered a peculiar type of hybrid narrative, combining global conspiracy theories with local moral economies and religious sentiments. Religious micro-influencers were particularly influential in spreading the narrative that the government's COVID-19 policies could not be trusted, and that COVID-19 vaccines were dangerous and haram. Such posts were often removed in line with the social media platforms' policies to combat false information on COVID-19, and the individuals who created such content risked prosecution in line with the government's punitive approach to "hoaxes". However, this did not lessen the prevalence of anti-vaccine narratives, nor did it mitigate public distrust of the government. The government also contributed to the spiral of distrust through its inconsistent policies, lack of transparency, and mixed messages. Especially in the pandemic's early phases, government officials themselves were found spreading misleading information, first to downplay the severity and risk of COVID-19 in order to avoid social unrest, and subsequently to push for a quick reopening of the economy. In prioritizing the economy over public health, considerable resources were spent on influence campaigns to persuade the public to continue business as normal. The influence campaigns appeared to succeed in persuading people to return to work and to get vaccinated eventually. However, public distrust remained and was easily reactivated on social media in response to inconsistencies and double standards in the government's enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions.

Inequalities for Differential Forms by Ravi P. Agarwal , Shusen Ding , Craig Nolder
English | PDF | 2009 | 392 Pages | ISBN : 0387360344 | 3.4 MB
Differential forms satisfying the A-harmonic equations have found wide applications in fields such as general relativity, theory of elasticity, quasiconformal analysis, differential geometry, and nonlinear differential equations in domains on manifolds.

This monograph is the first one to systematically present a series of local and global estimates and inequalities for such differential forms in particular. It concentrates on the Hardy-Littlewood, Poincaré, Cacciooli, imbedded and reverse Holder inequalities. Integral estimates for operators, such as homotopy operator, the Laplace-Beltrami operator, and the gradient operator are also presented. Additionally, some related topics such as BMO inequalities, Lipschitz classes, Orlicz spaces and inequalities in Carnot groups are discussed in the concluding chapter. An abundance of bibliographical references and historical material supplement the text throughout.
This book will serve as an invaluable reference for researchers, instructors and graduate students in analysis and partial differential equations and could be used as additional material for specific courses in these fields.

Inequality Kills Us All: COVID-19's Health Lessons for the World by Stephen Bezruchka
English | November 28, 2022 | ISBN: 1032326212, 1032278390 | True EPUB | 230 pages | 1.5 MB
The complex answer to why the United States does so poorly in health measures has at its base one pervasive issue: The United States has by far the highest levels of inequality of all the rich countries. Inequality Kills Us All details how living in a society with entrenched hierarchies increases the negative effects of illnesses for everyone.

The antidote must start, Stephen Bezruchka recognizes, with a broader awareness of the nature of the problem, and out of that understanding policies that eliminate these inequalities: A fair system of taxation, so that the rich are paying their share; support for child well-being, including paid parental leave, continued monthly child support payments, and equitable educational opportunities; universal access to healthcare; and a guaranteed income for all Americans. The aim is to have a society that treats everyone well―and health will follow.

Infinite Dimensional Kähler Manifolds by Alan Huckleberry, Tilmann Wurzbacher
English | PDF | 2001 | 385 Pages | ISBN : 3764366028 | 35 MB
Infinite dimensional manifolds, Lie groups and algebras arise naturally in many areas of mathematics and physics. Having been used mainly as a tool for the study of finite dimensional objects, the emphasis has changed and they are now frequently studied for their own independent interest. On the one hand this is a collection of closely related articles on infinite dimensional Kähler manifolds and associated group actions which grew out of a DMV-Seminar on the same subject. On the other hand it covers significantly more ground than was possible during the seminar in Oberwolfach and is in a certain sense intended as a systematic approach which ranges from the foundations of the subject to recent developments. It should be accessible to doctoral students and as well researchers coming from a wide range of areas. The initial chapters are devoted to a rather selfcontained introduction to group actions on complex and symplectic manifolds and to Borel-Weil theory in finite dimensions. These are followed by a treatment of the basics of infinite dimensional Lie groups, their actions and their representations. Finally, a number of more specialized and advanced topics are discussed, e.g., Borel-Weil theory for loop groups, aspects of the Virasoro algebra, (gauge) group actions and determinant bundles, and second quantization and the geometry of the infinite dimensional Grassmann manifold.

Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebras: An Introduction by Victor G. Kac
English | PDF | 1983 | 267 Pages | ISBN : 1475713843 | 18.3 MB
0.1. The creators of the Lie theory viewed a Lie group as a group of symmetries of an algebraic or a geometric object; the corresponding Lie algebra, from their point of view, was the set of infinitesimal transformations. Since the group of symmetries of the object is not necessarily finite-dimensional, S. Lie considered not only the problem of classification of subgroups of GL n , but also the problem of classification of infinite-dimensional groups of transformations.

The problem of classification of simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras over the field of complex numbers was solved by the end of the 19th century by W. Killing and E. Cartan. (A vivid description of the history of this discovery, one of the most remarkable in all of mathematics, can be found in Hawkins [1982].) And just over a decade later, Cartan classified simple infinite-dimensional Lie algebras of vector fields on a finite-dimensional space.

Christian Krötzl, "Infirmity in Antiquity and the Middle Ages: Social and Cultural Approaches to Health, Weakness and Care"
English | ISBN: 0367879646 | 2019 | 334 pages | EPUB | 12 MB
This volume discusses infirmitas ('infirmity' or 'weakness') in ancient and medieval societies. It concentrates on the cultural, social and domestic aspects of physical and mental illness, impairment and health, and also examines frailty as a more abstract, cultural construct. It seeks to widen our understanding of how physical and mental well-being and weakness were understood and constructed in the longue durée from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The chapters are written by experts from a variety of disciplines, including archaeology, art history and philology, and pay particular attention to the differences of experience due to gender, age and social status. The book opens with chapters on the more theoretical aspects of pre-modern infirmity and disability, moving on to discuss different types of mental and cultural infirmities, including those with positive connotations, such as medieval stigmata. The last section of the book discusses infirmity in everyday life from the perspective of healing, medicine and care.

Information in War: Military Innovation, Battle Networks, and the Future of Artificial Intelligence
by Benjamin M. Jensen, Christopher Whyte
English | 2022 | ISBN: 1647122635 | 267 Pages | PDF | 5.78 MB

An in-depth assessment of innovations in military information technology informs hypothetical outcomes for artificial intelligence adaptations
In the coming decades, artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionize the way humans wage war. The military organizations that best innovate and adapt to this AI revolution will likely gain significant advantages over their rivals. To this end, great powers such as the United States, China, and Russia are already investing in novel sensing, reasoning, and learning technologies that will alter how militaries plan and fight. The resulting transformation could fundamentally change the character of war.
In Information in War, Benjamin Jensen, Christopher Whyte, and Scott Cuomo provide a deeper understanding of the AI revolution by exploring the relationship between information, organizational dynamics, and military power. The authors analyze how militaries adjust to new information communication technology historically to identify opportunities, risks, and obstacles that will almost certainly confront modern defense organizations as they pursue AI pathways to the future. Information in War builds on these historical cases to frame four alternative future scenarios exploring what the AI revolution could look like in the US military by 2040.
