Lieke Wijnia, "Museums as Ritual Sites"
English | ISBN: 1032270098 | 2024 | 248 pages | EPUB | 7 MB
Museums as Ritual Sites critically examines the assumption that museums inherently function as ritual sites and, in turn, are poised to exert influence on cultural and societal change.

Bringing together a diverse, international group of interdisciplinary scholars and curators, the volume celebrates and critically engages with Carol Duncan's seminal work, Civilizing Rituals. Presenting a wide-ranging exploration of how museums function as liminal zones in broader societal contexts, the book discusses major topics identified as functioning at the heart of the above-mentioned paradigm shift: diversity and inclusion, consumption, religion, and tradition. These topics are studied through the lens of their ritual implications in museum practice. Presenting case studies on ethnographic, art, history, community, and memorial practices in museums, the book reflects the diversity of the contemporary international museum field. As such, the volume presents a critical and updated revision of the ritual perspective on museums - both as it was presented by Duncan and as it has since been developed in the field of museum studies.

Muslim Minorities and the National Commission for Minorities in India By Syed Najiullah
2011 | 150 Pages | ISBN: 1443833444 | PDF | 1 MB
Plural societies all over the world are facing the challenge of integrating the minorities into mainstream polity and society. India is a land of many languages, cultures and religions. It is an ideal place where one can see the minorities in their different dimensions. It is the home to the second largest Muslim population in the world, and their integration into mainstream politics has remained a challenge to the secular polity of India. The present work Muslim Minorities and the National Commission for Minorities in India , deals with the Muslim situation in India and the institutional response of the state towards them. It locates the problem of Muslim minorities in the larger context of minority rights and discusses the efficacy of the redress mechanisms, like National Commission for Minorities, in forging the community within larger society. The study highlights that the institutionalization of minority rights and the safeguards, like the monitoring mechanisms, are not just enough, and should also be supported by strong appreciation for the principle of pluralism for the integration of minority communities in the plural societies. The book will be useful to academicians, researchers, students and general public interested in the study of political science, public policy, sociology, plural societies, and minority rights.

Muslim Mobilities: Geographies of Piety and Belonging in Tajik Dubai Business
by Manja Stephan
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3111343480 | 294 Pages | True ePUB | 2.72 MB

A translocal ethnography about Tajik migrants' engagement in projects of reform Islamic life in Dubai, the book maps Gulf migration onto larger geographies of Muslim mobility, piety and belonging across places in Eurasia, the Gulf, and wider Middle East. Spatializing the intersection of migration, work and Muslim piety, the book examines how formations of ethical subjectivity are closely tied to the multiple places that shape migrants' travel itineraries and related experiences of dwelling there and crossing them. Situating these spatial biographies in broader transregional fields of Muslim mobility, connectedness and placemaking, the book explores why in the early 2000s young Tajik Muslims pursued spiritual, social and moral progress in the booming religious economy of Dubai's fur coat business sector. The book's spatial approach works threefold: With a focus on abroad, it interrogates the interplay of spatial perceptions of 'the good elsewhere' with migrants' placemaking 'there'. A second focus is on how multiplicity and flexibility of migrant situatedness (spatially, temporally, socially) in Persianate, Russophone and Arab culturescapes shape mobile pious subjectivities and cosmopolitan belongings. The book also develops a situated Tajik perspective on Gulf migration, that grounds in circulating spatial imaginaries, Muslim knowledge repertories, as well as in individual travel modes, paths and migrant experiences resulting from precarious livelihoods and discriminating migrant regimes. Linking anthropology with new area studies approaches, this book seeks to enhance multidisciplinary scholarship about the complex relation between religion, migration and mobile subjectivity in both Central Asian and Gulf studies and in the anthropology of Islam.

Muslim Prayer in American Public Life
by Rose Aslan
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0190079223 | 269 Pages | True PDF | 18.2 MB

Observant Muslims strive to fulfill the pillars of Islam, which include praying five times a day, preceded by a cleansing ritual and followed by physical prostrations facing Mecca. In a society not always understanding or accepting of these practices, how do observant Muslims navigate this ritualistic obligation? In this book, Rose Aslan seeks to answer this question and explores the complexities of maintaining devout Islamic rituals in post-9/11 America.
Drawing on an original survey of 350 Muslims as well as examples from literature, poetry, film, television shows, and social media posts, Muslim Prayer in American Public Life provides an in-depth examination of the lived experiences of Muslim prayer practices in the United States today. It explores the various ways practicing Muslims navigate their ritual obligations within a predominantly secular society and the diverse challenges they confront regarding prayer in public settings such as schools, workplaces, media representations, religious debates, and protest movements. Aslan shows how Muslims employ creative adaptations to prayer in secular spaces that are not designed to accommodate religious needs. Despite facing discrimination, they assert their identity and claim belonging in the United States through embodied spiritual acts. Muslim Prayer in American Public Life illustrates how Muslims strive to maintain their faith within an ever-evolving American national context.

Ida Lichter, "Muslim Women Reformers: Inspiring Voices Against Oppression"
English | ISBN: 1
591027160 | 2009 | 513 pages | PDF | 19 MB

In a world where the strident demands of Islamic extremists capture the media's attention, the courageous protests of Muslim reformers barely receive any notice. These include a surprising number of women who are prepared to challenge institutionalized persecution, risking derision, arrest, physical harm, and even death. In this inspiring compilation of Muslim women's stories from around the world, the voices of these long-oppressed women ring loud and clear as they question ideology and culture, patriarchal and religious beliefs, and demand the social and political rights women lack in many Muslim countries. The reformers speak out with passion, humanity, and sometimes humor in these compact and often poignant biographies, bringing alive the harsh realities for women in many parts of the world. By surveying a wide range of Muslim reformers, not only in the Middle East but also in Europe and North America, author Ida Lichter uncovers some significant emerging trends. For example, she notes that the majority of Muslim feminists would like to see reform contained within Islam. Many criticize their patriarchal culture for suppressing egalitarian views that they believe the Koran expresses and so they advocate a reinterpretation of the holy text. Some demand changes to discriminatory Sharia-based laws. Others campaign openly for political and educational reforms.Complete with a glossary and a list of helpful Web sites, this vibrant anthology makes use of reliable translations from original languages to demonstrate the groundswell of grassroots change that promises eventually to bring even the most conservative sectors of Islam into the twenty-first century.

Magdalena Lubanska, "Muslims and Christians in the Bulgarian Rhodopes. Studies on Religious "
English | ISBN: 3110439999 | 2015 | 324 pages | PDF | 61 MB
The book studies the role of religious syncretism in the social and religious life of Muslim-Christian communities in the Western Rhodopes. The author places emphasis on analysing the symbolic dimension and the cultural function of syncretism in order to determine whether it helps to integrate the two religious groups, or is perhaps a kind of pretence obscuring their underlying isolationist and anti-syncretic tendencies.

R. J. B. Bosworth, "Mussolini and the Eclipse of Italian Fascism: From Dictatorship to Populism"
English | ISBN: 0300232721 | 2021 | 352 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
An incisive account of how Mussolini pioneered populism in reaction to Hitler's rise-and thereby reinforced his role as a model for later authoritarian leaders

"A passionately engaged history of a Mussolini and an Italy caught up in the monstrous gravitational waves engendered by the coming of Third Reich."-Giuseppe Finaldi, author of Mussolini and Italian Fascism
On the tenth anniversary of his rise to power in 1932, Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) seemed to many the "good dictator." He was the first totalitarian and the first fascist in modern Europe. But a year later Hitler's entrance onto the political stage signaled a German takeover of the fascist ideology.
In this definitive account, eminent historian R.J.B. Bosworth charts Mussolini's leadership in reaction to Hitler. Bosworth shows how Italy's decline in ideological pre-eminence, as well as in military and diplomatic power, led Mussolini to pursue a more populist approach: angry and bellicose words at home, violent aggression abroad, and a more extreme emphasis on charisma. In his embittered efforts to bolster an increasingly hollow and ruthless regime, it was Mussolini, rather than Hitler, who offered the model for all subsequent authoritarians.

Mutual Interest: A Novel by Olivia Wolfgang-Smith
English | February 4, 2025 | ISBN: 1639733329 | True EPUB | 336 pages | 4.1 MB
A classic in the making: a mesmerizing novel about marriage and ambition, sexuality and secrecy, and the true costs of building an empire.

At the turn of the 20th century, Vivian Lesperance is determined to flee her origins in Utica, New York, and avoid repeating her parents' dull, limited life. When she meets Oscar Schmidt, a middle manager at a soap company, Vivian finds a partner she can guide to build the life she wants-not least because, more interested in men himself, Oscar will leave Vivian to tend to her own romances with women.
But Vivian's plans require capital, so the two pair up with Squire Clancey, scion of an old American fortune. Together they found Clancey & Schmidt, a preeminent manufacturer of soap, perfume, and candles. When Oscar and Squire fall in love, the trio form a new kind of partnership.
Vivian reaches the pinnacle of her power building Clancey & Schmidt into an empire of personal care products while operating behind the image of both men. But exposure threatens, and all three partners are made aware of how much they have to lose.
For readers of Hernan Diaz's Trust and Colm Tóibín's The Magician, with echoes of Gustave Flaubert and E.M. Forster, Mutual Interest is a beguiling story of queer romance, empire, and power.

My Darling Boy: A Novel by John Dufresne
English | January 14, 2025 | ISBN: 1324035730 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 1.1 MB
A brilliant and gut-wrenching novel about a father and son from a "master" (Lee Martin) of the tragi-comic.

Known for his bold voice and unforgettable characters, John Dufresne tells the story of Olney, whose beloved son Cully collapses into addiction and vanishes into the chaotic netherworld of southern Florida. Aided by his terminally ill girlfriend and the colorful inhabitants of a local motel―including a doomsday prepper, an ex-nun, a pair of blind twins with an acute sense of smell, and a devoutly Catholic shelter worker―Olney sets out to save his son. Hilarious and devastating in equal measure, My Darling Boy is a hero's quest for our time, a testament to families touched by the opioid crisis, and a remarkable achievement from one of our most talented, genre-bending authors.

My Perfect One: Typology and Early Rabbinic Interpretation of Song of Songs By Jonathan Kaplan
2015 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0199359342 | EPUB | 1 MB
Most studies of the history of interpretation of Song of Songs focus on its interpretation from late antiquity to modernity. In My Perfect One, Jonathan Kaplan examines earlier rabbinic interpretation of this work by investigating an underappreciated collection of works of rabbinic literature from the first few centuries of the Common Era, known as the tannaitic midrashim. In a departure from earlier scholarship that too quickly classified rabbinic interpretation of Song of Songs as allegorical, Kaplan advocates a more nuanced reading of the approach of the early sages, who read Song of Songs through a mode of typological interpretation concerned with the correspondence between Scripture and ideal events in Israel's history. Throughout the book Kaplan explores ways in which this portrayal helped shape a model vision of rabbinic piety as well as of an idealized vision of their beloved, God, in the wake of the destruction, dislocation, and loss the Jewish community experienced in the first two centuries of the Common Era. The archetypal and idealized language of Song of Songs provided, as Kaplan argues, a textual landscape in which to imagine an idyllic construction of Israel's relationship to her beloved, marked by mutual devotion and fidelity. Through this approach to Song of Songs, the Tannaim helped lay the foundations for later Jewish thought of a robust theology of intimacy in God's relationship with the Jewish people.

My Side of the River: An Alaska Native Story (American Indian Lives) by Elias Kelly
English | July 1, 2023 | ISBN: 1496235096 | True EPUB | 346 pages | 2 MB
In 1971 the U.S. government created the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act and extinguished Alaska Native aboriginal rights to hunting and fishing-forever changing the way Alaska Natives could be responsible for their way of life. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claimed all wildlife management responsibility and have since told Natives when, where, and how to fish, hunt, and harvest according to colonial management doctrines. We need only look at our current Alaska salmon conditions to see how these management efforts have worked.

In My Side of the River, agricultural specialist Elias Kelly (Yup'ik) relates how traditional Native subsistence hunting is often unrecognized by government regulations, effectively criminalizing those who practice it. Kelly alternates between personal stories of friends, family, and community and legal attempts to assimilate Native Alaskans into white U.S. fishing and hunting culture. He also covers landownership, incorporation of Alaska residents, legal erasure of Native identity, and poverty rates among Native Alaskans. In this memoir of personal and public history, Kelly illuminates the impact of government regulations on traditional life and resource conservation.

In Ireland, and to a lesser extent Scotland, in seemingly unconnected locations, there are more than 60 enigmatic round towers, often 90 feet tall or higher and nearly uniform in their construction. Believed to have been built between the 7th and 10th centuries CE, the Roman Catholic Church long ago laid claim to them. Yet who built them-and why-is completely unknown, and even their date of construction is debatable.
Presenting a professional dowser's radiesthetic and magnetic analysis of the round towers of Ireland, Christopher Freeland examines previously unexplored yet fundamental facts common to all of the round towers, including geographic orientation, connections to underground waterways, historical records, and the magnetic polarity of the stones themselves. Explaining the basics of radiesthesia, the energetic science of dowsing, the author shows how the locations of the towers have far-reaching ramifications for the health of humans, animals, and plants in their surrounding areas. His in-person examinations reveal how systematic magnetic orientation of the stones in these towers' walls, the unusual construction techniques of the unknown architects, and the resulting access to Earth's telluric forces further enhance their energetic effects. He explores the types of stone used, speculates how many towers once existed, and firmly debunks the assertion that they were built by the Church.
Offering a guide to the creation and purpose of the round towers, Freeland shows that we can once again embrace the ancient wisdom of our ancestors about the flow of energy in the Earth and bring back balance and harmony through understanding Nature's alchemy of stone, water, and magnetism.

Myth and Solidarity in the Modern World: Beyond Religious and Political Division By Timothy Stacey
2018 | 368 Pages | ISBN: 0815348169 | EPUB | 1 MB
In the context of the rise of reactionary politics across the globe, this book seeks new ways of developing solidarity across religious, political and economic differences. Drawing on an increasingly influential Christian theological movement, postliberalism, it claims that the dominance of liberal, secular rationality has blinded people to the fundamental role of transcendence and myth in developing solidarity. The result is either atrophy, or a retrenching in divisive myths of faith, race, nation or economic status. Liberalism is now a dominant force across the globe. But its resonance in the Anglo-Saxon West, from which it originates and has been most fully realized, is relatively underexplored. The book thus follows two simultaneous lines of enquiry. Firstly, a genealogical study of social scientific and policy iterations of the relationship between belief and solidarity in the Anglo-Saxon West, placing postliberal theory into dialogue with the sociology and anthropology of religion, politics and economics. Secondly, it draws from original ethnographic research with groups in London, UK, that seek to develop solidarity in the face of deep-seated difference. By bringing a new way of framing these contentious debates about contemporary society, this research offers tools for more productive conversations around religious and political topics, in particular concluding with a clear policy proposal. It is, therefore, a useful resource for both academics of theology and religious studies, political philosophy, sociology and anthropology; and for politicians, policy makers and practitioners hoping to develop solidarity in the modern world.

Mythic Plants: Potions and Poisons from the Gardens of the Gods by Ellen Zachos
English | February 18, 2025 | ISBN: 1523524391 | True EPUB | 192 pages | 12.7 MB
In a beautiful, fully illustrated package, this modern, witty take on familiar Greek myths focuses on the wild and wonderful role plants have played in Greek mythology. Think Song of Achilles meets The Secret Life of Trees.

See the ever-popular Greek myths anew by focusing on the fascinating roles plants play in the stories.
When Prometheus stole fire from the Olympian gods and gave it to mankind, he hid it in a stalk of giant fennel. Ancient Greeks waiting to question the oracles were given cannabis as part of their cleansing rituals. A quince fruit started the Trojan war. The goddess Demeter was so distraught when Hades kidnapped her daughter that she caused winter to blanket the earth, killing all plants.
In Greek mythology, plants were used for tools, intoxication, warfare, food, medicine, magic, and rituals. Achilles used yarrow (now named after him as Achillea) to stanch the flow of blood from his soldiers' wounds. (It still works.) Wine was long used by the gods, but there is evidence that other plants - such as oleander, mandrake, and ivy- were added to wine to create the frenzy for which Dionysus's followers were well known.
Some of those plants were real and still exist today; some of them are mythological, with powers we can only imagine. This book will focus on how the ancient Greeks used plants in their lives and loves and conquests - focusing particularly on ones we can cultivate today. Includes tips throughout for bringing these ancient plants into your garden.
