The Suicidal State: Race Suicide, Biopower, and the Sexuality of Population by Madoka Kishi
English | November 5, 2024 | ISBN: 0197690076 | True EPUB | 264 pages | 0.7 MB
The Suicidal State theorizes a biopolitics of suicide by mapping the entwinement between the Progressive-Era discourse of "race suicide" and period representations of literary suicide. Against the backdrop of the turn-of-the-century debates over immigration restrictions, "race suicide" suggests white Americans' low birth rate as foretelling an immanent extinction of the white race, prefiguring the contemporary white nationalist discourse, "replacement theory." While race suicide personified the populational subject-the "race"-as a suicidal individual, Progressive-Era literature gave birth to a microgenre of literary suicides, including works by Henry James, Kate Chopin, Jack London, Gertrude Stein, and a series of Madame Butterfly texts.

The Suicidal State argues that suicides in these texts literalize the fear of race suicide as they thwart the biopolitical demands for self-preservation, survival, and reproduction, articulating queer deathways that betray the nation's reproductive imperative. Both in its figuration of race suicide and in literary suicides, self-inflected death is imagined as a uniquely agential act in its destruction of agency, offering a fertile space for the reconceptualization of biopower's subject formation as it traverses individual and social bodies. That is, the book argues that suicide poses a limit case for the biopolitical management over life. Suicide, as it was imagined at the turn of the century, refuses, nullifies, and parries its obligatory relation to both biopower's discipline of the individual and its management of the population, thereby forging new forms of subjectivity and ways of being in the world that sidestep the twin imperatives for preservation and procreation. In tracking these queer potentialities of suicide, The Suicidal State offers a new history of sex and race, of the relation between individual and collective, of the formation of a biopolitical state that Foucault calls a "racist State, a murderous State, and a suicidal State."

The Sun Won't Come Out Tomorrow: The Dark History of American Orphanhood
by Kristen Martin
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1645030342 | 352 Pages | True ePUB | 1.54 MB

The real history of being an orphan in America is nothing like the myth, and nothing like the American dream.
The orphan story has been mythologized: Step one: While a child is still too young to form distinct memories of them, their parents die in an untimely fashion. Step two: Orphan acquires caretakers who amplify the world's cruelty. Step three: Orphan escapes and goes on an adventure, encountering the world's vast possibilities.
The Sun Won't Come Out Tomorrow upends this. Pairing powerful critiques of popular orphan narratives, from Annie to the Boxcar Children to Party of Five, journalist Kristen Martin explores the real history of orphanhood in the United States, from the 1800s to the present. Martin reveals the mission of religious indoctrination that was at the core of the first orphanages, the orphan trains that took parentless children out West (often without a choice), and the inherent classism and racism that still underlies the United States' approach to child welfare.
Through a combination of in-depth archival research, memoir (Martin herself lost both her parents when she was quite young), and cultural analysis, The Sun Won't Come out Tomorrow is a compellingly argued, compassionate book that forces us to reconsider autonomy, family, and community. Kristen Martin delivers a searing indictment of America's consistent inability to care for those who need it most.

The Survival of International Organizations: Institutional Responses to Existential Challenges
by Hylke Dijkstra, Laura von Allwörden
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0198948417 | 227 Pages | PDF | 2 MB

While international organizations (IOs) have played a central role in global governance in the post-Cold War period, during the last decade many have struggled. Due to the rise of populism, the Trump Presidency, and the renewed assertiveness of the emerging powers, various IOs have been challenged in ways that put their ability to perform core functions at risk.
The Survival of International Organizations studies the responses of IOs to such existential challenges. It focuses on the central institutional actors inside IOs - IO leaders and their bureaucracies - that have a strong interest in the survival and well-being of their organizations. Presenting six case studies and drawing on more than 100 interviews, this book highlights the variation in the way in which these institutional actors try to cope with and counter existential challenges: Some fight tooth and nail to keep their IOs relevant, while other institutional actors are more circumspect in their actions.
The Survival of International Organizations examines the IOs themselves as well as both those who lead IOs at the top and the desk officers who keep the machinery running. This behind-the-scenes view uncovers important processes about the survival of IOs and international institutions. It demonstrates that institutional actors try to tailor their responses to the specific types of existential challenges, but that their ability to do so depends on the quality of their leadership, organizational structure, and embedding in external networks.
Transformations in Governance is a major academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, and environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states to supranational institutions, subnational governments, and public-private networks. It brings together work that advances our understanding of the organization, causes, and consequences of multilevel and complex governance. The series is selective, containing annually a small number of books of exceptionally high quality by leading and emerging scholars.

The Sword and the Pen: Women, Politics, and Poetry in Sixteenth-Century Siena By Konrad Eisenbichler
2012 | 392 Pages | ISBN: 0268078653 | EPUB | 1 MB
In The Sword and the Pen: Women, Politics, and Poetry in Sixteenth-Century Siena, Konrad Eisenbichler analyzes the work of Sienese women poets, in particular, Aurelia Petrucci, Laudomia Forteguerri, and Virginia Salvi, during the first half of the sixteenth century up to the fall of Siena in 1555. Eisenbichler sets forth a complex and original interpretation of the experiences of these three educated noblewomen and their contributions to contemporary culture in Siena by looking at the emergence of a new lyric tradition and the sonnets they exchanged among themselves and with their male contemporaries. Through the analysis of their poems and various book dedications to them, Eisenbichler reveals the intersection of poetry, politics, and sexuality, as well as the gendered dialogue that characterized Siena's literary environment during the late Renaissance. Eisenbichler also examines other little-known women poets and their relationship to the cultural environment of Siena, underlining the exceptional role of the city of Siena as the most important center of women's writing in the first half of the sixteenth century in Italy, and probably in all of Europe. This innovative contribution to the field of late Renaissance and early modern Italian and women's studies rescues from near oblivion a group of literate women who were celebrated by contemporary scholars but who have been largely ignored today, both because of a dearth of biographical information about them and because of a narrow evaluation of their poetry. Eisenbichler's analysis and reproduction of many of their poems in Italian and modern English translation are an invaluable contribution not only to Italian cultural studies but also to women's studies.

The Syriac Script at Turfan: First Soundings
by Martina Galatello
English | 2023 | ISBN: 3700192746 | 187 Pages | PDF | 11 MB

This is the first book-length palaeographic study of about a thousand fragments in Syriac and Sogdian languages discovered between 1902 and 1914 in the Turfan area on the ancient Northern Silk Roads. This manuscript material, probably dating between the late 8th and 13th /14th centuries, is of utmost relevance for the history of an area that represents a crossroads region of various communities, languages and religions, not least the East Syriac Christian community. Palaeographic factors such as form, modulus, ductus, contrast, spaces between letters and ligatures have been examined. Particularly significant is a peculiar ligature of the letters sade and nun. One important observation that emerges from this research is the almost total absence of monumental script in favour of mostly cursive forms, most of them East Syriac cursive forms. These represent a valuable source for the study of the history of the East Syriac script due to the paucity of earlier and contemporary East Syriac manuscript evidence from the Middle East, at least before the twelfth century. Moreover, this research sheds light on scribal habits that are highly relevant for a better comprehension of the Sogdian and Syriac-speaking Christian communities, for the history of writing between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and for a greater understanding of the social context in which these and other communities in the same area read, wrote, and shared handwritten texts. This study is part of the FWF stand-alone project "Scribal Habits. A case study from Christian Medieval Central Asia" (PI Chiara Barbati) at the Institute of Iranian Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The Teaching of the Buddha: Being Happy Now By David Paul Boaz
2020 | 373 Pages | ISBN: 1947637533 | EPUB | 1 MB
The reach of this engaging and very readable book is as unique as it is profound. Its scope involves the reader in an integral, yet non-scholarly coming to meet of the freeing, subjective non-conceptual wisdom of the East with the pragmatic objective conceptual knowledge of the West. The result is a potential personal and collective unification of our two human cognitive voices-exoteric objective material, and esoteric subjective spiritual-the prior and present unity of Science and Spirit. This often-amusing book will serve its readers as a brief, directly experiential introduction to the profound teaching of the Buddha of this present age-Siddhartha Gautama The Buddha. This is a book that will immediately enhance the reader's awakening to "innermost" human happiness by taming "the wild horse of the mind" through calming, selfless mindfulness practice. From this peaceful inner space, the reader will quickly learn to open and directly connect to the "always already present" Presence of bright indwelling Buddha heart/Buddha mind, by whatever name, concept, or belief. This is an important book. It will benefit both fully engaged Buddhist practitioners and non-practitioners alike. A bit surprisingly, it is also a book for philosophers of physics and cosmology, and for students of metaphysics, philosophy of mind and consciousness studies who wish to integrate their Western understanding with the profundity of Buddhist ontology and epistemology. Thus, will the specialist reader be referred to some mildly scholarly appendices. The reader will in these pages engage such diverse themes as The Prior Unity of Science and Spirit; Quantum Nonlocality and Buddhist Emptiness; Buddhist Dzogchen; The Primordial Unity of Self and No-Self; and The Buddhist View of Human Happiness.Dr. David Paul Boaz (Dechen Wangdu) is Founding Director of Copper Mountain Institute, Inc., a tax-exempt Buddhist Temple and Research Institute. He has taught philosophy and religious studies for over forty years. David is author of four books and over fifty articles and essays (visit davidpaulboaz.org). He has been a student of Dzogchen Master Adzom Rinpoche since 1999.

The Temporality of Festivals: Approaches to Festive Time in Ancient Babylon, Greece, Rome, and Medieval China
by Anke Walter
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3111364860 | 101 Pages | PDF | 20 MB

How can time become festive? How do festivals manage to make time 'special', to mark out a certain day or days, to distinguish them from 'normal', everyday time, and to fill them with meaning? And how can we reconstruct what festive time looked like in the past and what people thought about it?
While a lot of research has been done on festivals from the point of view of several scholarly disciplines, the specific temporality of festivals has not yet attracted sufficient attention. In this volume, scholars from different fields provide answers to the questions raised above, based on a fresh analysis of astronomical documents, calendars, and literary texts. Cultures as diverse as ancient Babylon, Greece and Rome, and medieval China all share a sense of calendrically recurring festive time as something special that needs to be carefully mapped out and preserved, often with great sophistication, and that gives us precious insights into the broader religious, political, and social dimensions of time within past cultures.

The Terrifying Realm of the Possible: Nearly True Stories by Brett Gelman
English | March 19, 2024 | ISBN: 0063315971 | True EPUB | 272 pages | 3.4 MB
A daring, hilariously neurotic literary debut from the acclaimed actor and comedian Brett Gelman (Stranger Things, Fleabag).

Enter the wonderfully weird, always uncomfortable, side-splittingly funny world of The Terrifying Realm of the Possible, where your worst fears of who you are or might become are always just around the corner. In these masterful short stories from the singular mind of the actor and comedian Brett Gelman, you'll meet five individuals, each navigating a uniquely strange stage of life:
- ABRAHAM AMSTERDAM (the child)
- MENDEL FREUDENBERGER (the teenager)
- JACKIE COHEN (the adult)
- IRIS BELOW (the senior)
- Z (the dead)
Our characters face the big issues; the ones we all face. As they traverse the prickly terrain of morality, family, sex, fame, religion, and death they search for answers to life's unanswerable questions. In the futility of that search comes the absurdity, along with the comedy. The composite portrait is an existential (mis)adventure of Rothian proportions. Gelman's remarkable first book is a bold, unforgettable debut that challenges our assumptions about what it means to be human.

The Theologian's Enterprise: A Very Short Introduction By Aidan Nichols, O.P.
2020 | 102 Pages | ISBN: 1621643034 | EPUB | 1 MB
In this brief guide, the internationally acclaimed theologian and Dominican priest, Fr. Aidan Nichols seeks to explain the approach to Catholic theology which he has worked out in the course of nearly forty years of publishing books and articles in the service of the Church. He looks at the nature of theology, at its status as a science that is also a wisdom, at its intrinsic principles and methods, its sources, its sub-divisions, and, not least, the qualities which the budding theologian must make his own if theol- ogy is to be authentically Christian and Catholic and assist rather than hinder the Church's mission. In a time of considerable confusion in the intellectual life of the Catholic Church, arising not only from professors but hierarchs, The Theologian's Enterprise offers comprehensive counsel to those setting out in the study of their faith, perhaps for the first time, with solid advice on the habits of mind theology requires. The text seeks to combine profundity with brevity. It would be difficult to find a more concise guide in any language.

Daniel C. Timmer, "The Theology of the Books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah "
English | ISBN: 1108468691 | 2024 | 306 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah address problems in and around ancient Judah in ways that are as incisive and critical as they are optimistic and constructive. Daniel C. Timmer's The Theology of the Books of Nahum, Habakkuk, and Zephaniah situates these books in their social and political contexts, examining the unique theology of each as it engages thorny problems in Judah and beyond. In dialogue with recent scholarship, this study focuses on these books' analysis and evaluation of the world as it is, focusing on both human beings and their actions, and God's commitment to purify, restore, and perfect the world. Timmer also surveys these books' later theological use and cultural reception. His study brings their theology into dialogue with concerns as varied as ecology, nationalism, and widespread injustice. It highlights the enduring significance of divine justice and grace for solid hope and effective service in our world.

The Thing about Religion: An Introduction to the Material Study of Religions by David Morgan
English | April 12, 2021 | ISBN: 1469662833 | True EPUB | 268 pages | 28.5 MB
Common views of religion typically focus on the beliefs and meanings derived from revealed scriptures, ideas, and doctrines. David Morgan has led the way in radically broadening that framework to encompass the understanding that religions are fundamentally embodied, material forms of practice. This concise primer shows readers how to study what has come to be termed material religion-the ways religious meaning is enacted in the material world.

Material religion includes the things people wear, eat, sing, touch, look at, create, and avoid. It also encompasses the places where religion and the social realities of everyday life, including gender, class, and race, intersect in physical ways. This interdisciplinary approach brings religious studies into conversation with art history, anthropology, and other fields. In the book, Morgan lays out a range of theories, terms, and concepts and shows how they work together to center materiality in the study of religion. Integrating carefully curated visual evidence, Morgan then applies these ideas and methods to case studies across a variety of religious traditions, modeling step-by-step analysis and emphasizing the importance of historical context. The Thing about Religion will be an essential tool for experts and students alike.

Jesse P. Nickel, "The Things that Make for Peace: Jesus and Eschatological Violence "
English | ISBN: 311070241X | 2021 | 325 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This study offers fresh insight into the place of (non)violence within Jesus' ministry, by examining it in the context of the eschatologically-motivated revolutionary violence of Second Temple Judaism.

The book first explores the connection between violence and eschatology in key literary and historical sources from Second Temple Judaism. The heart of the study then focuses on demonstrating the thematic centrality of Jesus' opposition to such "eschatological violence" within the Synoptic presentations of his ministry, arguing that a proper understanding of eschatology and violence together enables appreciation of the full significance of Jesus' consistent disassociation of revolutionary violence from his words and deeds.

Sir Richard J. Evans FBA FRSL FRHistS, "The Third Reich in History and Memory"
English | ISBN: 0349140758 | 2016 | 496 pages | AZW3 | 655 KB
In this fascinating and enlightening collection of essays, one of the most important historians of our time reflects on the ways our understanding of Nazi Germany have been transformed in the twenty-first century.

Richard Evans examines new historical perspectives on the Third Reich, such as showing how it is increasingly viewed in a broader international - even global - context, as part of the age of imperialism. He investigates how Nazi policies in Europe drew on Hitler's image of the American colonisation of the Great Plains, how companies like Volkswagen and Krupp operated on a global scale and - perhaps most controversial of all - how historians have come to see the Holocaust not as a unique historical event but as a genocide with parallels and similarities in other countries and at other times. THE THIRD REICH IN HISTORY AND MEMORY explores how these new perspectives have brought dividends, but also offers a critical perspective on the ways they are changing our perception of the period.
