El Periodo Húmedo Africano parece haber terminado con relativa rapidez, tardando un par de miles de años en ser sustituido por un clima mucho más seco, lo que inició un proceso de desertización que obligó a muchos animales y habitantes humanos a desplazarse a los bordes exteriores del inmenso desierto. Hubo pasajes que desaparecieron a medida que la dureza del clima arañaba inexorablemente las montañas y colinas, convirtiéndolas en arena que borró todo rastro de su existencia.
