Camille Tawil, Robin Bray, "Brothers In Arms: The Story of al-Qa'ida and the Arab Jihadists"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 0863564801 | EPUB | pages: 209 | 0.3 mb
"Meticulously researched debut" - ✅Publishers Weekly

"An excellent source for anyone interested in the region." - New York Journal of Books
"Brothers in Arms sheds a clear and indispensable-if troubling-light on a religious war that is far from over."-Michael F. Scheuer, former head of the CIA's Bin Laden unit and professor of security studies, Georgetown University
"Camille Tawil delivers a carefully reported assessment of al Qaeda and its affiliated Arab jihadist groups."-Peter Bergen, author of Holy War, Inc.
Since 2001 America's War on Terror has achieved what Osama bin Laden could not: the unification of the jihad under al-Qa'ida's banner. Although today al-Qa'ida is seen as the epitome of jihad, when it first emerged other militant Islamists rejected its vision of a holy war against the West.
Investigative journalist Camille Tawil charts the history of conflict and complicity between al-Qa'ida and its brothers in arms from the late 1980s to the present day. Drawing on a network of contacts in Egyptian Islamic Jihad, Algeria's Armed Islamic Group, and the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, he shows how the failure of their separate national struggles brought them increasingly under the influence of Osama bin Laden and his global agenda.
From prison cells in Morocco to the caves of Tora Bora, Tawil gives us unique access to the key players behind the jihadist movement and the evolution of its violent ideology.
Born in 1965, Camille Tawil is a Lebanese writer and investigative journalist. He has covered Islamic militant groups for al-Hayat Arabic daily in London since the early 1990s.

Rafal K. Stepien, "Buddhist Literature As Philosophy, Buddhist Philosophy As Literature"
English | ISBN: 1438480717 | 2020 | 381 pages | EPUB, PDF | 16 MB + 3 MB
Can literature reveal reality? Is philosophical truth a literary artifice? How does the way we think affect what we can know? Buddhism has been grappling with these questions for centuries, and this book attempts to answer them by exploring the relationship between literature and philosophy across the classical and contemporary Buddhist worlds of India, Tibet, China, Japan, Korea, and North America. Written by leading scholars, the book examines literary texts composed over two millennia, ranging in form from lyric verse, narrative poetry, panegyric, hymn, and koan, to novel, hagiography, (secret) autobiography, autofiction, treatise, and sutra, all in sustained conversation with topics in metaphysics, ethics, aesthetics, and the philosophies of mind, language, literature, and religion.

Interdisciplinary and cross-cultural, this book deliberately works across and against the boundaries separating three mainstays of humanistic pursuit-literature, philosophy, and religion-by focusing on the multiple relationships at play between content and form in works drawn from a truly diverse range of philosophical schools, literary genres, religious cultures, and historical eras. Overall, the book calls into question the very ways in which we do philosophy, study literature, and think about religious texts. It shows that Buddhist thought provides sophisticated responses to some of the perennial problems regarding how we find, create, and apply meaning-on the page, in the mind, and throughout our lives.

Valerie Sperling, "Building The Russian State: Institutional Crisis And The Quest For Democratic Governance"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0813338050, 0813337429 | EPUB | pages: 264 | 0.5 mb
Has the Russian state managed to lay the institutional groundwork for long-term stability and democratic governance? In Building the Russian State , Valerie Sperling assemblies a group of cutting-edge scholars to critically assess the crises in Russia's transitional institutions. Part I of the book shows that Russia's political elites are less focused on serving public interests than on enriching themselves, and examines how these elites are ruling Russia. Part II focuses on the growth of organized crime, the decay of the military, the precariousness of the Russian Federation, the weakness of the labor movement, the corruption of the courts, the challenges facing international reformers, and the authoritarianism of the super-presidential political system. By focusing on the challenges, failures, and occasional successes of the Russian political system, this volume offers upper-level undergraduates and other scholars valuable insight into post-Soviet politics, state-building, and transitions to democracy.

Alexander Baratsits, "Building a European Digital Public Space: Strategies for taking back control from Big Tech platforms"
English | 2021 | ASIN: B09LSQ1FMN | EPUB | pages: 373 | 0.6 mb
The disruptive transformation of the "public" through digitization has led to monopolizing structures on the Internet that make Europe dependent - both at an infrastructural level and politically - on non-European private and state players. At the same time, these structures undermine our democratic order. This book shows how the current crisis could boost our chances of breaking new ground by establishing an independent European Digital Public Space. The contributors are academics, actors from public and non-commercial media, and long-time activists in the field of the Commons.

Yakov Feygin, "Building a Ruin: The Cold War Politics of Soviet Economic Reform"
English | ISBN: 0674240995 | 2024 | 288 pages | PDF | 17 MB
A masterful account of the global Cold War's decisive influence on Soviet economic reform, and the national decay that followed.

What brought down the Soviet Union? From some perspectives the answers seem obvious, even teleological―communism was simply destined to fail. When Yakov Feygin studied the question, he came to another conclusion: at least one crucial factor was a deep contradiction within the Soviet political economy brought about by the country's attempt to transition from Stalinist mass mobilization to a consumer society.
Building a Ruin explores what happened in the Soviet Union as institutions designed for warfighting capacity and maximum heavy industrial output were reimagined by a new breed of reformers focused on "peaceful socioeconomic competition." From Khrushchev on, influential schools of Soviet planning measured Cold War success in the same terms as their Western rivals: productivity, growth, and the availability of abundant and varied consumer goods. The shift was both material and intellectual, with reformers taking a novel approach to economics. Instead of trumpeting their ideological bona fides and leveraging their connections with party leaders, the new economists stressed technical expertise. The result was a long and taxing struggle for the meaning of communism itself, as old-guard management cadres clashed with reformers over the future of central planning and the state's relationship to the global economic order.
Feygin argues that Soviet policymakers never resolved these tensions, leading to stagnation, instability, and eventually collapse. Yet the legacy of reform lingers, its factional dynamics haunting contemporary Russian politics.

Jenny H. Peterson, "Building a peace economy?: Liberal peacebuilding and the development-security industry"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0719087309 | EPUB | pages: 232 | 0.7 mb
This book critically examines the range of policies and programmes that attempt to manage economic activity that contributes to political violence. It offers a new framework for understanding both the problem of economic activity in conflict zones as well as programmes aimed at managing these and transforming them into more peaceful economic and political relationships. Through this examination, both the problems of liberal modes of peacebuilding, implemented by the development-security industry, and opportunities for policy innovation are explored.

Useful charts and frameworks throughout the book provide the reader with a range of analytical tools that can be easily used to explore war economies and related policies in a range of contexts, making this book an essential read for students, policy makers and aid practitioners working in a range of disciplines and conflict-affected areas.

Burdened: Student Debt and the Making of an American Crisis by Ryann Liebenthal
English | September 10th, 2024 | ISBN: 0358353963 | 336 pages | True EPUB | 1.21 MB
An urgent investigation of student debt in America revealing the corrupt systems, rotten policies, and bad actors that have created a $1.7 trillion crisis.

College costs more today than ever and is worth less. Tuition at public colleges has more than tripled in the past 50 years. Over the same period student debt has grown from virtually nothing to more than $1.7 trillion, second only to home mortgages.
Skyrocketing student-loan burdens are leading an entire generation to put off the traditional milestones of adulthood: buying homes, getting married, starting families, and saving for retirement. The burden weighs heavier on women and black Americans, and with almost 10 percent of student debtors now over the age of 60, it is a crisis no longer limited to the young.
Ryann Liebenthal's Burdened tells the maddening story of how the power plays of legislators and presidents, the commodification of higher ed, and the rapacious practices of for-profit colleges and private lenders have created today's student-debt lava pit.
As the notion of student-loan cancellation percolates into the political mainstream, Liebenthal offers a deeply researched, sweeping narrative of our broken system. Rather than give in to despair, she boldly charts a way out, offering hopeful solutions to this seemingly unfixable problem.

Burmese Days (Oxford World's Classics) by George Orwell, edited by Rosinka Chaudhuri
English | March 1, 2021 | ISBN: 019885370X | True EPUB | 304 pages | 1.9 MB
'...after all, natives were natives - interesting, no doubt, but finally ... an inferior people'

Based on his experiences as a policeman in Burma, George Orwell's first novel is set during the end days of British colonialism, when Burma is ruled from Delhi as part of British India. In the fictional district of Kyauktada, based on Kathar, U Po Kyin, a corrupt Burmese magistrate, is planning to destroy the reputation of the Indian Dr Veraswami. The doctor's main protection is his friendship with John Flory who, as a European, has higher prestige. Dr Veraswami wants the privilege of becoming a member of the British club because he thinks that if his standing with the Europeans is good, U Po Kyin's intrigues against him will not prevail. U Po Kyin begins a campaign to persuade the Europeans that the doctor holds disloyal, anti-British opinions, and believes anonymous letters with false stories about the doctor 'will work wonders'.
