Al término de la Primera Guerra Mundial, Hitler era un joven artista empobrecido que se las apañaba vendiendo cuadros de recuerdo, pero en pocos años su poderosa oratoria le llevó a la vanguardia del partido nazi en Múnich y contribuyó a que el partido se hiciera mucho más popular. Un puñado de seguidores se convirtió rápidamente en un partido de miles, con el apoyo de fuerzas paramilitares como las SA, y a la cabeza de todo ello estaba un hombre cuyas encendidas oraciones denunciaban a judíos, comunistas y otros "traidores" por haber traído a la nación alemana el Tratado de Versalles, que había provocado hiperinflación y una economía en ruinas.
Durante los primeros años de la década, el gobierno de Múnich había apoyado al incipiente partido nazi como contrapeso a los comunistas, que habían intentado dar un golpe de estado años antes, pero las autoridades estuvieron a punto de volverse en su contra el 8 de noviembre de 1923, cuando Hitler y sus fuerzas intentaron iniciar una revolución y hacerse con el control de la ciudad. Apoyados por hombres como Rudolf Hess, Hermann Goering y Ernst Röhm, Hitler y los nazis estuvieron peligrosamente cerca de conseguirlo, y puede que sólo lo lograran gracias a la negativa de las SA a iniciar actos violentos contra miembros de la policía y el ejército alemanes.

Acabaría cumpliendo menos de un año en prisión (durante el cual dictó Mein Kampf a Hess), y en cuanto fue liberado volvió a trabajar con los nazis, convencido ahora de que el camino hacia el poder pasaba por medios pacíficos
Los primeros años de la década de 1930 fueron un periodo tumultuoso para la política alemana, incluso en comparación con la transición a la era moderna que provocó diversas formas de caos en el resto del mundo. En Estados Unidos, la dependencia del obsoleto patrón oro y una política monetaria absurdamente parsimoniosa contribuyeron a provocar la Gran Depresión. Mientras tanto, el Imperio de Japón inició su fatal aventurerismo con la invasión de Manchuria, alienando al resto del mundo con las atrocidades que cometió. Por la misma época, Gandhi inició su campaña por la independencia pacífica de la India mediante protestas no violentas contra los británicos.
Sin embargo, fue en Alemania donde se sembraron las semillas más fuertes de la tragedia futura. La República de Weimar, en dificultades, se había convertido en un caldo de cultivo para la política extremista, incluidas dos entidades autoritarias opuestas y poderosas: los nacionalsocialistas de derechas y el partido comunista KPD de izquierdas. En los albores de la década de 1930, estos dos grupos totalitarios se mantuvieron mutuamente en un punto muerto temporal, permitiendo que el frágil fantasma de la democracia continuara una supervivencia en gran medida ilusoria durante unos pocos años más.

Cuando Cristóbal Colón partió hacia el Este desde el Nuevo Mundo, ya había explorado San Salvador en las Bahamas (que creía que era Japón), Cuba (que creía que era China) y La Española, la fuente del oro. Según cuenta la historia, Colón, de regreso a España tras su primer viaje, hizo escala en Lisboa para informar al rey portugués Juan II de su descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo. El Rey Juan protestó que, según el Tratado de Alcáçovas de 1479, que dividía el Océano Atlántico entre las esferas de influencia española y portuguesa, las tierras recién descubiertas pertenecían legítimamente a Portugal. Para dejar claro el punto, se autorizó el envío de una flota portuguesa desde el Tajo hacia el oeste para reclamar las "Indias", lo que provocó una oleada de actividad diplomática en la corte de Fernando e Isabel. En aquel momento, España carecía de poder naval para impedir que Portugal cumpliera su amenaza, y el resultado fue el Tratado de Tordesillas de 1494, de enorme influencia.
El Tratado de Tordesillas fue uno de los documentos más importantes de la época en su género, pues estableció los parámetros esenciales de los dos imperios en pugna, la primera de las grandes entidades imperiales europeas. El Tratado de Tordesillas trazó una línea imaginaria de polo a polo, que discurría a 100 leguas al oeste de las islas más occidentales de las Azores. Según los términos de una bula papal de apoyo, todas las tierras situadas al oeste de esa línea pertenecían a España, y todas las situadas al este pertenecían a Portugal. En la práctica, esto significaba que Portugal se quedaba con África y el Océano Índico, mientras que a España se le concedían todas las tierras situadas al oeste, incluidas las Américas y el Caribe, conocidas colectivamente como las "Indias" o el Nuevo Mundo.
Sin embargo, el Tratado de Tordesillas contenía una anomalía. Sin que sus redactores lo supieran, la línea del tratado atravesaba la ceja más occidental de Sudamérica, más o menos desde la desembocadura del Amazonas hasta Porto Alegre, ambas en el actual Brasil, lo que significaba que todo lo que quedaba al este pertenecía legalmente a Portugal. Poco pudieron hacer los españoles y, como consecuencia, se estableció la vasta colonia portuguesa de Brasil en una región nominalmente reclamada por España.
Tal vez inevitablemente, se había desarrollado una rivalidad regional cuando los portugueses empezaron a establecer una colonia en Brasil y a ampliar sus fronteras hacia el sur. Tras la conquista de los incas en la década de 1530, la amenaza portuguesa motivó la autorización de una segunda expedición, comandada esta vez por Pedro de Mendoza con una fuerza de unos 1.500 hombres. El grupo llegó a la desembocadura del Río de la Plata en 1536, y allí Mendoza fundó el asentamiento de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre. Fue la base de la futura ciudad de Buenos Aires, pero su establecimiento no estuvo exento de resistencia por parte de las tribus circundantes, lo que marcó el tipo de conflictos que darían forma a la historia y a los movimientos independentistas de Argentina durante los 300 años siguientes.
