Henri VIII restera probablement connu pour avoir décapité certaines de ses épouses, notamment Anne Boleyn, et il est donc normal que son acte le plus décisif soit le résultat d'une mésaventure conjugale. En conflit permanent avec l'Église catholique pour avoir tenté de dissoudre son mariage avec Catherine d'Aragon, Henri VIII a fini par rompre avec l'Église et a créé l'Église d'Angleterre, qui a modifié à jamais l'histoire religieuse de l'Angleterre et la hiérarchie sociale de la nation et de son empire.
Anne Boleyn était une mégère et, en fin de compte, une victime, mais elle était aussi une politicienne astucieuse, une amante insensée et une femme sage. Elle était aussi une femme adultère et une réformatrice religieuse, et ces deux qualités allaient s'unir pour changer à jamais le visage de la chrétienté anglaise. Louis XVI est l'un des plus célèbres rois de France, mais pour des raisons qu'il aurait préféré éviter. Arrivé à l'âge adulte dans le sillage du règne du Roi-Soleil, Louis XIV, et de son père, Louis XV, Louis XVI avait initialement l'intention d'être l'un des rois les plus éclairés de France. Au lieu de cela, il est destiné à être le seul roi de France exécuté. En effet, c'est sa mort et son rôle dans la fomentation de la Révolution française (avec sa tristement célèbre reine, Marie-Antoinette) qui continuent à jouer un rôle central dans l'héritage de Louis XVI.
La disparition brutale de Louis XVI et de son règne a marqué la fin d'une période historique tumultueuse mais importante pour la France et le reste du monde. Le souhait de Louis XVI de réformer la France dans le moule des Lumières et son incapacité à imposer ces réformes à une aristocratie réticente ont enhardi et stimulé ceux qui allaient se rebeller contre lui. Dans le même temps, son soutien à la cause américaine lors de la révolution américaine des années 1770 a contribué à assurer la liberté de cette nation et à aggraver les difficultés financières de la France. Ironiquement, le rôle de la France dans la réussite de la révolution américaine a servi d'exemple à ceux qui allaient la renverser moins de 15 ans plus tard.
Le même conservatisme prudent qui a entaché son règne aux yeux de tant de gens a finalement conduit à la chaîne d'événements qui a fait de lui une victime de la guillotine. Alors que la société française se révolte ouvertement à la fin des années 1780, le roi semble indécis à plusieurs moments cruciaux, notamment lors d'une célèbre tentative d'évasion qui est déjouée à Vergennes, et il doit littéralement prendre ses jambes à son cou lorsqu'une foule prend d'assaut le palais royal des Tuileries.

Of the many eccentric figures in Japanese Zen, the Soto Zen master Tosui Unkei (d. 1683) is surely among the most colorful and extreme. Variously compared to Ryokan and Francis of Assisi, Tosui has been called "the original hippie." After many grueling years of Zen study and the sanction of a distinguished teacher, Tosui abandoned the religious establishment and became a drifter.The arresting details of Tosui's life were recorded in the Tribute (Tosui osho densan), a lively and colloquial account written by the celebrated scholar and Soto Zen master Menzan Zuiho. Menzan concentrates on Tosui's years as a beggar and laborer, recounting episodes from an unorthodox life while at the same time opening a new window on seventeenth-century Japan.
