A razão da existência da maioria das cidades do mundo é óbvia para o estudante de geografia. Nova Iorque e Xangai controlam portos profundos e atravessam grandes rios que trazem o comércio do interior; Paris e Londres estão nos pontos de passagem dos principais rios que atravessam o país; Joanesburgo está situada no topo de uma grande montanha de minério de ouro; e Moscovo e Madrid estão no coração das suas grandes nações, podendo facilmente controlar até os cantos mais distantes do país.

Meca, no entanto, é diferente, pois a cidade existe apenas porque é sagrada. Mesmo séculos antes do nascimento do Profeta Maomé, os líderes de Meca estabeleceram que a sua cidade era o local sagrado mais eminente da Arábia ocidental e estabeleceram uma trégua para os peregrinos da cidade. Um dos efeitos deste processo foi o facto de Meca se ter tornado um centro para o que hoje pode ser descrito como turismo, uma vez que até os antigos visitantes precisavam de lugares para comer, beber e dormir. Naturalmente, Meca é agora mais conhecida por ser a cidade mais sagrada do Islão, venerada como o local de nascimento de Maomé e o local onde Alá lhe revelou o Alcorão pela primeira vez. Em Meca encontra-se a Ka'aba, um edifício situado na Al-Masjid al-Haram (Grande Mesquita) que é considerado o local mais sagrado e, em qualquer parte do mundo, os muçulmanos olham na direção da Ka'aba enquanto rezam. A peregrinação a Meca é considerada uma necessidade para os muçulmanos devotos em alguma altura das suas vidas, e a própria cidade está interdita aos não muçulmanos. De facto, Meca é tão importante para o Islão que o nome da cidade entrou no léxico inglês e é uma referência comum a qualquer área intimamente associada a algo (como Paris, que é frequentemente chamada a Meca da moda).
Mesmo séculos antes do nascimento do Profeta Maomé, os judeus estabeleceram-se na área que se tornou Medina para escapar à perseguição dos babilónios e romanos, o que significa que a área e o seu ambiente árido trouxeram habitantes precisamente porque não era uma área atractiva ou rica em recursos. De facto, a cidade destinada a ser a segunda cidade mais sagrada do Islão ganhou esse lugar simplesmente por se encontrar entre as rotas comerciais para a cidade religiosa de Meca, o que trouxe comerciantes e peregrinos em número suficiente para fazer dela um centro comercial.
Naturalmente, Meca é hoje mais conhecida por ser a cidade mais sagrada do Islão, sendo venerada como o local de nascimento de Maomé e o local onde Alá lhe revelou pela primeira vez o Alcorão. No entanto, o Profeta passou muito tempo em Medina, especialmente quando ele e os seus apoiantes se viram em conflito com os mecanos. Usando Medina como base, Maomé acabou por conquistar Meca, e ambas as cidades tornaram-se parte integrante do Califado que se seguiu. Isto significa que, apesar de a história ter trazido mudanças geopolíticas, Medina continuou a ser uma cidade de significado religioso para todos os muçulmanos e, embora a sua história turbulenta seja frequentemente ignorada, muitas pessoas ainda estão bastante familiarizadas com a cidade.
