Roots and Patterns: Hebrew Morpho-syntax By Maya Arad (auth.)
2005 | 286 Pages | ISBN: 1402032439 | PDF | 10 MB
This book is simultaneously a theoretical study in morphosyntax and an in-depth empirical study of Hebrew. Based on Hebrew data, the book defends the status of the root as a lexical and phonological unit and argues that roots, rather than verbs or nouns, are the primitives of word formation. A central claim made throughout the book is the role of locality in word formation, teasing apart word formation from roots and word formation from existing words syntactically, semantically and phonologically. The book focuses on Hebrew, a language with rich verb morphology, where both roots and noun- and verb-creating morphology are morphologically transparent. The study of Hebrew verbs is based on a corpus of all Hebrew verb-creating roots, offering, for the first time, a survey of the full array of morpho-syntactic forms seen in the Hebrew verb. While the focus of this study is on how roots function in word-formation, a central chapter studies the information encoded by the Hebrew root, arguing for a special kind of open-ended value, bounded within the classes of meaning analyzed by lexical semanticists. The book is of wide interest to students of many branches of linguistics, including morphology, syntax and lexical semantics, as well as of to students Semitic languages.

Xuesong Gao, "Second Handbook of English Language Teaching"
English | 2019 | pages: 1221 | ISBN: 3030028976 | PDF | 18,2 mb
The Second Handbook of English Language Teaching provides a comprehensive examination of policy, practice, research and theory related to English language teaching in international contexts. Over 70 chapters focus on the research foundation for best practices, frameworks for policy decisions, and areas of consensus and controversy in second-language acquisition and pedagogy. In countries around the globe, English has become the second language taught most frequently and intensively. In many countries, particularly in Asia, government policies have made English a part of the curriculum from primary school on. Demand for English teaching by parents and adult learners is fueled by the desire to increase economic competitiveness, globalization of the workforce, immigration, and a move toward lifelong learning. Immigration has led to an increased demand for English-language teaching even in countries where English is the dominant language.

Shape Memory Alloys in Civil Engineering by Bassem Andrawes
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 192 Pages | ISBN : 3031680006 | 64.8 MB

This book presents a new class of metallic materials, called shape memory alloys (SMAs), as emerging materials for civil engineering applications. These materials have been used for decades in high-end fields like the aerospace and biomedical fields, and possess extraordinary properties that have attracted the attention of civil engineering researchers and practitioners for over 25 years. In this volume, based on 20 years of research findings, the author describes how SMAs started to find their way into practical applications in civil engineering. And that, like any metal, SMAs are produced in any shape, size, or form including wire, bar, and sheet, but unlike other metals, SMAs exhibit a unique ability to recover their original shape/size after being excessively deformed. Given the demand for sustainability and resilience in civil engineering applications, this book is ideal for civil engineering practitioners and materials researchers concerned with building materials and civil infrastructure.

Aaron Ridley, "Singularities: Essays in Aesthetics"
English | ISBN: 0192845977 | 2024 | 288 pages | PDF | 6 MB
These essays, half of them appearing here for the first time, address issues concerning the two key singularities that Kant identified in aesthetics: artistic creativity and aesthetic judgement. Ranging from Kant himself to contemporary debates, from song to conceptual art, from ethics to atheism, from function to failure, Aaron Ridley explores the ways in which the one-off character of creativity and judgement may defy our ordinary expectations of what an explanation should be like. Intended equally for specialists and students, this collection offers a distinctive approach to aesthetics that will be of interest to any reader concerned with philosophical reflection upon the arts.

Harriet Jacobs was an African-American, born into slavery in North Carolina in 1813. She thwarted the sexual advances of her master for years until sheescaped and hid in the attic crawlspace of her grandmother's house for seven years before escaping north to freedom. Snake Oil: A Novel by Kelsey Rae Dimberg
English | September 17, 2024 | ISBN: 0062867954 | True EPUB | 352 pages | 0.7 MB
A razor-sharp literary thriller about three women vying for power at a wellness startup, where the cost of ambition might be deadly

One woman's elixir is another woman's poison
Rhoda West is Silicon Valley's favorite female CEO: the luminously charismatic founder of the fast-growing startup Radical, a wellness company whose core mission is the betterment of women's lives. Rhoda's Instagram page offers intimate glimpses of her personal life alongside promotions for the cult-status products developed in the Well, Radical's secretive lab.
Dani Lang is a "quester," as Rhoda calls her most avid followers. Dani found Radical at a low point in her life, and took an entry level job just to get in the door. When she volunteers to test a controversial new supplement, Dani wins an opportunity to rise in the company, even to work with Rhoda herself.
Cecelia Cole is a "quasher." She grinds away at the Customer Worship queue, resenting the entitled customers, the woo-woo Radical jargon, and Rhoda's smiling hypocrisy. Cecelia, who suffers from a miserable chronic illness, knows that the remedies Rhoda sells can't cure real sickness.
Just as Rhoda announces another fundraising round that could turn Radical into a billion-dollar unicorn, an anonymous Twitter account begins spilling snarky gossip from inside the startup. Is Rhoda really the nurturing leader she presents to the world, or a fraud? Or is this just another case of a woman in business being punished for her strength and audacity?
Tensions rise and loyalties clash, then tragedy strikes during a company party. In the aftermath of what looks more and more like a crime, even the most faithful questers begin to wonder to what lengths Rhoda will go to protect her company.
Part page-turning suspense, part darkly comic skewering of startup culture, Snake Oil is a gripping exploration of ambition and authenticity, shining a revealing light on the wellness world.

Susan Greenhalgh, "Soda Science: Making the World Safe for Coca-Cola"
English | ISBN: 0226834735 | 2024 | 364 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Takes readers deep inside the secret world of corporate science, where powerful companies and allied academic scientists mold research to meet industry needs.

The 1990s were tough times for the soda industry. In the United States, obesity rates were exploding. Public health critics pointed to sugary soda as a main culprit and advocated for soda taxes that might decrease the consumption of sweetened beverages-and threaten the revenues of the giant soda companies.
Soda Science tells the story of how industry leader Coca-Cola mobilized allies in academia to create a soda-defense science that would protect profits by advocating exercise, not dietary restraint, as the priority solution to obesity, a view few experts accept. Anthropologist and science studies specialist Susan Greenhalgh discovers a hidden world of science-making-with distinctive organizations, social networks, knowledge-making practices, and ethical claims-dedicated to creating industry-friendly science and keeping it under wraps. By tracing the birth, maturation, death, and afterlife of the science they made, Greenhalgh shows how corporate science has managed to gain such a hold over our lives.
Spanning twenty years, her investigation takes her from the US, where the science was made, to China, a key market for sugary soda. In the US, soda science was a critical force in the making of today's society of step-counting, fitness-tracking, weight-obsessed citizens. In China, this distorted science has left its mark not just on national obesity policies but on the apparatus for managing chronic disease generally. By following the scientists and their ambitious schemes to make the world safe for Coke, Greenhalgh offers an account that is more global-and yet more human-than the story that dominates public understanding today.
Coke's research isn't fake science, Greenhalgh argues; it was real science, conducted by real and eminent scientists, but distorted by its aim. Her gripping book raises crucial questions about conflicts of interest in scientific research, the funding behind familiar messages about health, and the cunning ways giant corporations come to shape our diets, lifestyles, and health to their own needs.

Marek Pawlikowski, "Somatostatin Analogs in Diagnostics and Therapy"
English | 2007 | pages: 109 | ISBN: 1587062232 | PDF | 2,8 mb
Somatostatin is a peptide isolated originally from the hypothalamus and considered as an inhibitor of growth hormone secretion. However, further studies have shown that the peptide was ubiquitously distributed and exerts a large spectrum of physiological effects, mostly of an inhibitory nature. The very short half-life of the native peptide limits its therapeutic application. To overcome this limitation the long-lasting modified molecules (analogs) of somatostatin were synthesized. The present book provides comprehensive data on the application of somatostatin analogs in diagnostics and treatment of diseases, mostly endocrine disorders and cancers.

Klaus Benesch, Kerstin Schmidt, "Space in America: Theory History Culture"
English | 2005 | pages: 589 | ISBN: 9042018763 | PDF | 2,0 mb
Space in America Theory History Culture America's sense of space has always been tied to what Hayden White called the "narrativization" of real events. If the awe-inspiring manifestations of nature in America (Niagara Falls, Virginia's Natural Bridge, the Grand Canyon, etc.) were often used as a foil for projecting utopian visions and idealizations of the nation's exceptional place among the nations of the world, the rapid technological progress and its concomitant appropriation of natural spaces served equally well, as David Nye argues, to promote the dominant cultural idiom of exploration and conquest. From the beginning, American attitudes towards space were thus utterly contradictory if not paradoxical; a paradox that scholars tried to capture in such hybrid concepts as the "middle landscape" (Leo Marx), an "engineered New Earth" (Cecelia Tichi), or the "technological sublime" (David Nye). Not only was America's concept of space paradoxical, it has always also been a contested terrain, a site of continuous social and cultural conflict. Many foundational issues in American history (the dislocation of Native and African Americans, the geo-political implications of nation-building, immigration and transmigration, the increasing division and "clustering" of contemporary American society, etc.) involve differing ideals and notions of space. Quite literally, space and its various ideological appropriations formed the arena where America's search for identity (national, political, cultural) has been staged. If American democracy, as Frederick Jackson Turner claimed, "is born of free land," then its history may well be defined as the history of the fierce struggles to gain and maintain power over both the geographical, social and political spaces of America and its concomitant narratives. The number and range of topics, interests, and critical approaches of the essays gathered here open up exciting new avenues of inquiry into the tangled, contentious relations of space in America. Topics include: Theories of Space ¯ Landscape / Nature ¯ Technoscape / Architecture / Urban Utopia ¯ Literature ¯ Performance / Film / Visual Arts

Dr Michael Balboni, "Spirituality and Religion Within the Culture of Medicine: From Evidence to Practice"
English | ISBN: 0190272430 | 2017 | 432 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Spirituality and Religion Within the Culture of Medicine provides a comprehensive evaluation of the relationship between spirituality, religion, and medicine evaluating current empirical research and academic scholarship.

In Part 1, the book examines the relationship of religion, spirituality, and the practice of medicine by assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the most recent empirical research of religion/spirituality within twelve distinct fields of medicine including pediatrics, psychiatry, internal medicine, surgery, palliative care, and medical ethics. Written by leading clinician researchers in their fields, contributors provide case examples and highlight best practices when engaging religion/spirituality within clinical practice. This is the first collection that assesses how the medical context interacts with patient spirituality recognizing crucial differences between contexts from obstetrics and family medicine, to nursing, to gerontology and the ICU.
Recognizing the interdisciplinary aspects of spirituality, religion, and health, Part 2 of the book turns to academic scholarship outside the field of medicine to consider cultural dimensions that form clinical practice. Social-scientific, practical, and humanity fields include psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, history, philosophy, and theology. This is the first time in a single volume that readers can reflect on these multi-dimensional, complex issues with contributions from leading scholars.
In Part III, the book concludes with a synthesis, identifying the best studies in the field of religion and health, ongoing weaknesses in research, and highlighting what can be confidently believed based on prior studies. The synthesis also considers relations between the empirical literature on religion and health and the theological and religious traditions, discussing places of convergence and tension, as well as remainingopen questions for further reflection and research.
This book will provide trainees and clinicians with an introduction to the field of spirituality, religion, and medicine, and its multi-disciplinary approach will give researchers and scholars in the field a critical and up-to-date analysis.

Amy H. Liu, "Standardizing Diversity: The Political Economy of Language Regimes "
English | ISBN: 0812246721 | 2015 | 264 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Languages have deep political significance beyond communication: a common language can strengthen cultural bonds and social trust, or it may exacerbate cultural differences and power imbalances. Language regimes that emerge from political bargains can centralize power by favoring the language of one ethnolinguistic group, share power by recognizing multiple mother tongues, or neutralize power through the use of a lingua franca. Cultural egoism, communicative efficiency, or collective equality determines the choice. As Amy H. Liu demonstrates, the conditions surrounding the choice of a language regime also have a number of implications for a nation's economy.

Standardizing Diversity examines the relationship between the distribution of linguistic power and economic growth. Using a newly assembled dataset of all language-in-education policies in Asia from 1945 to 2005 and drawing on fieldwork data from Malaysia and Singapore, Liu shows language regimes that recognize a lingua franca exclusively-or at least above all others-tend to develop social trust, attract foreign investment, and stimulate economic growth. Particularly at high levels of heterogeneity, the recognition of a lingua franca fosters equality and facilitates efficiency. Her findings challenge the prevailing belief that linguistic diversity inhibits economic growth, suggesting instead that governments in even the most ethnically heterogeneous countries have institutional tools to standardize their diversity and to thrive economically.

RAND Corporation F. Lowell, "State Arts Agencies 1965-2003: Whose Interests to Serve"
English | 2004 | pages: 60 | ISBN: 0833035622 | PDF | 0,6 mb
Numerous U.S. state and jurisdictional governments cut their arts budgets in 2003 and 2004. The author argues that the reason for these cuts is not just a onetime fiscal crisis, but the political weakness of state arts agencies that has arisen because of a growing mismatch between their roles and structures and the cultural and political realities they face. A shift in the arts agencies' focus and funding may be a solution, but it cannot take place until important conceptual and practical issues are resolved.

Sustainable Local Development for Environmental and Social Sustainability by Bhanwar Vishvendra Raj Singh, Amit Kumar Batar
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 190 Pages | ISBN : 3031673026 | 53.8 MB

The world organizations, including national governments, have already recognized the importance of the Aichi Biodiversity Target, the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR), Low Carbon Society. Therefore, there is an urgent need to act locally to tackle socio-economic, socio-ecological, socio-hydrological, and environmental conservation concerns in changing environments on a local to global scale and need to promote scientific solutions and common knowledge to achieve harmony between nature and humans under the threat of global climate change and the post-Covid-19 pandemic situation. For this purpose, the SLD approach is needed towards environmental and social sustainability. However, the SLD approach is challenging in terms of supply and demand of natural resources, resource depletion, socio-economic inequality, biodiversity loss, and climate change risk from local to the global scale, which vary based on different socio-economic, political, geographical, and cultural factors. Therefore, this book will highlight the environmental and social sustainability research by taking the local/regional case study. This book would also highlights the importance of policy interface at a local to global scale for environmental and social sustainability (ESS) in changing environments.

Systems Orthodontics: From Clinical Reasoning to Computation, and Back by Pietro Auconi , Guido Caldarelli , Antonella Polimeni
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 165 Pages | ISBN : 3031649311 | 11.4 MB

This book marks one of the first applications of the Medicine Network discipline to an everyday scenario. It explores situations where patients, often in adolescence, grapple with the decision of whether to commence a treatment, seeking insights into the more plausible future scenarios. Additionally, the specific feedback from biological systems in the human body serves as a potent metaphor for addressing various challenges in the field of Complex Systems.
In recent times, systems thinking and complexity theory have yielded substantial conceptual advancements across various research domains. In the context of orthodontics, these approaches offer a more comprehensive understanding in contrast to the traditional mechanistic approach, which primarily focuses on the analysis of applied forces. Systems thinking directs attention to the interaction among dentoskeletal components, where the behavior of one element can influence others. The amalgamation of multiple elements leads to entities with properties distinct from those of individual components. The increasing complexity of orthodontic reality beyond clinical or radiological observations necessitates the development of new theories.
Complexity theory has demonstrated that emergent properties in biological systems can be discerned through appropriate computational models, as opposed to the analytical study of individual components. The central metaphor for the interactive craniofacial system during growth is portrayed by the facial topology revealed through network analysis, facilitating a systemic reevaluation of traditional orthodontic theories. This book delineates the novel insights derived from the clinical-computational approach, applicable for a prognostic and early interception perspective in managing dentofacial dysmorphoses. Its objective is to captivate practitioners and persuade them of the practical utility of these innovative approaches.
