In this book, the major and at the same time most difficult questions of comparative cognition research - here called the sextet of animal intelligence - are presented using good examples, discussed in all their facets and finally answered with due caution. Starting with the question of human rationality, which is illuminated historically at the beginning and presented as a framework concept, the latest research is dealt with, which either revises preferred interpretation schemes or calls for new ones. It is particularly important to critically question hastily conceived categorisations, often derived from research on the human species and from everyday psychological notions, and to consider so-called animal irrationality, a.k.a. (mis)performance, from the perspective of species-specific, natural requirements. Why is it at all important to know whether animals can act rationally, intentionally or consciously? The answer is because it is of both theoretical and practical relevance. Theoretical relevance is twofold: because it is good in itself to understand animals better, but this knowledge is then also of great importance for assessing ourselves. This brings up the practical relevance: we are not only surrounded by animals, we live with animals, we live from animals. Yet we see ourselves as separate from them in important ways. Consciousness, language and rationality are essential characteristics with which we justify our human uniqueness and thus our superiority and ultimately our right to dominate and use animals in many ways. If an animal can feel pain, we feel obliged to avoid inflicting unnecessary pain on it. But yet we do not accord it the special inherent value and dignity associated with consciousness and rationality. This has far-reaching consequences for human action and the coexistence of humans and animals.

This text offers an account of a key operation of World War II. For much of the war, the powerful German battleship "Tirpitz" had dominated the Atlantic and was a deadly adversary of the Allied convoys. The Royal Navy had achieved notable successes in sinking the "Graf Spee" in 1939 and the "Bismarck" in 1941, but from its base in Norway, "Tirpitz" effectively blocked the convoy routes to North Russia and threatened the possibility of a destructive breakout into the Atlantic. British midget submarines and Soviet and Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm torpedo bombers all tried to destroy "Tirpitz" in port, but only succeeded in temporarily immobilizing her. Parallel to these efforts, were those of inventor Dr Barnes Willis (of the "bouncing bomb") who strove to perfect a similar bomb for use against "Tirpitz" by the specially formed No. 618 Squadron RAF. Protracted trials and technical problems dogged the programme and by late 1943, it was deemed to late for success. Meanwhile, the Royal Navy's midget submarine took place and torpedo bombers had some success although by mid-1944 "Tirpitz" remained a menace. Barnes Willis, however, continued to develop a bomb capable of piercing concrete and armour, resulting in the 12,000lb "Tallboy" ballistic bomb used by Lancaster bombers in a raid on "Tirpitz" in September 1944. Following two more attacks, the solitary dinosaur was finally destroyed.

The Agreement between New Zealand and Singapore for a Closer Economic Partnership (ANZSCEP) that came into force in January 2001 assumes important significance as it is the first comprehensive bilateral FTA that was signed involving Singapore, and also the first bilateral FTA of an ASEAN member, thus initiating the process of "new regionalism" in Asia. Since ANZSCEP is the only Singapore FTA that has been in force for more than five years now, the time is ripe to study some early effects of the FTAs between Singapore and New Zealand on bilateral economic relations, if any. In this context, the New Zealand High Commission in Singapore hosted a one-day Trade Policy Seminar on 10 May 2007 at Four Seasons Hotel, Singapore. This book, a collection of three papers presented at the above seminar by experts on the subject, provides a deeper understanding about motivations of New Zealand and Singapore to enter into other bilateral FTAs and some of the visible impacts observed since their implementation.

Then, we discuss working with myth, symbolism, and ritual, narrative, and postmodern magic as methods for transforming the stories of our lives. We cover forms of culture within and around RPGs, as well working with conflict in scenarios related to politics, culture, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. We share thoughts around the use of RPGs to foster activism, advocacy, inclusion, and accessibility. Finally, we offer considerations for researchers studying transformative role-playing games, including academic argument, structure, theory, method, data collection, ethics, and other considerations. We introduce key methods, including Research through Design, ethnography, and qualitative and quantitative data analysis. The book closes with a summary of evidence-based research available on the cognitive, affective, and behavioral effects of role-playing games.
