Burgos draws on archival materials from the U.S., Cuba, and Puerto Rico, as well as Spanish- and English-language publications and interviews with Negro league and major league players. He demonstrates how the manipulation of racial distinctions that allowed management to recruit and sign Latino players provided a template for Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager Branch Rickey when he initiated the dismantling of the color line by signing Jackie Robinson in 1947. Burgos's extensive examination of Latino participation before and after Robinson's debut documents the ways in which inclusion did not signify equality and shows how notions of racialized difference have persisted for darker-skinned Latinos like Orestes ("Minnie") Miñoso, Roberto Clemente, and Sammy Sosa.

Este grupo presionó al Vaticano para que reconociera el aumento de casos de posesión demoníaca y, en 2004, la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe del Vaticano pidió a todas las diócesis católicas que designaran a un exorcista capacitado. Es muy difícil obtener cifras precisas (la Iglesia católica, por ejemplo, no publica estadísticas oficiales sobre el número de exorcismos realizados por sus sacerdotes). Lo que sí se sabe es que la mayoría de las grandes diócesis católicas de Norteamérica tienen acceso a exorcistas oficiales, y que estos sacerdotes reciben formación especializada para llevar a cabo ministerios de exorcismo. No se dispone de cifras oficiales (la Iglesia católica no identifica a los sacerdotes que actúan como exorcistas), pero se cree que en 2011 la Iglesia católica contaba con unos 15 exorcistas formados en Norteamérica. Hoy en día, se cree que ese número supera con creces el centenar.
Tal vez no sea coincidencia que las encuestas sugieran que la creencia en los demonios y la posesión demoníaca también está aumentando. Una encuesta realizada en 2019 en América encontró que el 22% de los encuestados cree que los demonios "definitivamente existen", mientras que otro 24% cree que tales entidades "probablemente existen." Esas son cifras asombrosas en una nación moderna, industrializada y avanzada. Algunas personas afirman que la creencia en demonios y posesión demoníaca nunca ha sido tan alta.
Naturalmente, esta creciente creencia en la posesión demoníaca también ha llevado a un aumento en el número de exorcismos que los sacerdotes y otros son llamados a realizar. Una vez más, no hay cifras precisas disponibles, pero un exorcista de alto perfil en América, el padre Vincent Lampert, exorcista de la Arquidiócesis de Indianápolis, dijo a un periodista en octubre de 2018 que había recibido más de 1.700 solicitudes de exorcismos en lo que iba de año, el número más alto que había experimentado. Otros sacerdotes católicos entrenados en ritos de exorcismo en América del Norte habían dicho que este aspecto de su ministerio se ha vuelto tan abrumador que apenas pueden hacer frente a las solicitudes de exorcismos.
