On the Pleasures of Living in Gaza: Remembering A Way of Life Now Destroyed by Mohammed Omer Almoghayer
English | May 6, 2025 | ISBN: 1682196178 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 1.98 MB
Beyond the headlines of destruction and despair, discover the untold story of Gaza's humanity-its joys, resilience, and vibrant community spirit, as captured by a native son.

Israel's brutal assault on Gaza has plunged more than two million Palestinians into a ceaseless cycle of violence and deprivation. Despite the outrage that Israel's aggression has fanned, two opposing tropes about those who inhabit the Strip endure. For the minority backing Israel's actions, the Palestinians of Gaza are often seen as little more than terrorists. For many on the other side, they are perpetual victims, powerless and tragic. Each characterization dehumanizes Gaza's people.
In this book, Mohammed Omer Almoghayer, born and raised in southern Gaza, presents a necessary corrective: What the news reports have rarely shown are the ways in which, prior to Israel's onslaught, the people of Gaza rose above their hardship to enjoy the simple pleasures of human existence. While in no way diminishing the horrors hurled at the Strip since October 7, or the prior suffering of those forced to live in what was effectively an open prison, Omer Almoghayer here tells that story.
On the Pleasures of Living in Gaza takes the reader on a tour of a most misunderstood and hidden territory, allowing us to discover the community spirit, the enduring family ties, the festivals and pastimes, and the creativity and resourcefulness of people, who, in lives now tragically lost, refused to surrender to hopelessness, snatching moments of joy in the most difficult of circumstances.
More than ever, it is vital that we recognize the humanity of people referred to by Israel's defense minister as "animals," and by news organizations around the world by bald numbers of nameless dead. With the sensitivity and insight available to a native Gazan, Mohammed Omer's magnificent book parts the smoke and dust to show us the richness of a way of life Israel has now destroyed.

Jon Nordenson, "Online Activism in the Middle East: Political Power and Authoritarian Governments from Egypt to Kuwait "
English | ISBN: 1784537780 | 2017 | 416 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Does the internet facilitate social and political change, or even democratization, in the Middle East? Despite existing research on this subject, there is still no consensus on the importance of social media and online platforms, or on how we are to understand their influence. This book provides empirical analysis of the day-to-day use of online platforms by activists in Egypt and Kuwait. The research evaluates the importance of online platforms for effecting change and establishes a specific framework for doing so. Egypt and Kuwait were chosen because, since the mid-2000s, they have been the most prominent Arab countries in terms of online and offline activism. In the context of Kuwait, Jon Nordenson examines the oppositional youth groups who fought for a constitutional, democratic monarchy in the emirate. In Egypt, focus surrounds the groups and organizations working against sexual violence and sexual harassment. Online Activism in the Middle East shows how and why online platforms are used by activists and identifies the crucial features of successful online campaigns.

Egypt and Kuwait are revealed to be authoritarian contexts but where the challenges and possibilities faced by activists are quite different. The comparative nature of this research therefore exposes the context-specific usage of online platforms, separating this from the more general features of online activism. Nordenson demonstrates the power of online activism to create an essential 'counterpublic' that can challenge an authoritarian state and enable excluded groups to fight in ways that are far more difficult to suppress than a demonstration.

Only The Light Moves: Flying Covert Reconnaissance Missions in the Vietnam War by Francis A. Doherty
English | November 1, 2023 | ISBN: 1399057014 | True EPUB | 224 pages | 8.2 MB
"Doherty writes from the heart. The descriptions of his missions are nothing less than hair-raising. He describes his struggles with coming to grips with the war and the senseless death of so many young men." ― The Journal of the Air Force Historical Foundation

Only the Light Moves tells the story of a twenty-four-year-old US Army pilot who volunteered to fly covert S.O.G., or Studies and Observations Group, reconnaissance missions over the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a region that came to represent not only the United States' war with Vietnam, but also the "secret war" with Laos and Cambodia.
But this is not simply a war story; it is a love story about flying. Captain Francis A. Doherty spent every day for ten months above the jungle battlefield in a Cessna O-1 Bird Dog. The first all-metal fixed-wing aircraft ordered for and by the United States Army following the Army Air Forces' separation from it in 1947, the single-engine Bird Dog was a liaison and observation aircraft. And for this role, it was completely unarmed.
It was from the cockpit of a Bird Dog that Captain Doherty observed this illusive war, perhaps searching out enemy troop movements or calling down waiting F-4 Phantoms to strike a new target. It was a war in which he followed his father's footsteps in his dream to become a pilot, and where he learned a compassion that extended both to his comrades and the civilians caught in the middle of that terrible war.
In Only the Light Moves Captain Doherty not only reveals the highs and lows of his year at war in Vietnam but expands beyond his time in the conflict. He explores the emotional struggle he and his comrades faced after they returned home, reconciliations with lost faith, and the incredible impact of war on families.
We are also given an insight into Francis' subsequent journey to becoming a commercial airline pilot. His story makes no effort to glorify the violence that took the lives of so many. There are no broad stroke proclamations about the war, only a very personal, sensitive account of a terrible conflict seen through the eyes of a then young pilot in the air, illuminating the reality and the cost of when one's country decides to go to war.

Ordinary Time: Lessons Learned While Staying Put by Annie B. Jones
English | April 22, 2025 | ISBN: 006341127X | True EPUB | 240 pages | 1.7 MB
In her first book, the popular From the Front Porch podcast host and independent bookstore owner challenges the idea that loud lives are the ones that matter most, reminding us that we don't have to leave the lives we have in order to have the lives of which we've always dreamed.

Can life be an adventure, even when it's just . . . ordinary?
Annie Jones always assumed adulthood would mean adventure: a high-powered career; life in a big, bustling city; and travels to far-flung places she'd longed to see. But her reality turned out differently. As the years passed, Annie was still in the same small town running an independent bookstore -the kind of life Nora Ephron dreamed.
During that time, she hosted friends' goodbye parties and mailed parting gifts; wrote recommendation letters and wished former shop staffers well. She stayed in her small town, despite her love of big cities; stayed in her marriage to the guy she met when she was 18; and she stayed at her bookstore while the world outside shifted steadily toward digital retailers. And she stayed loyal to a faith she sometimes didn't recognize.
After ten years, Annie realized she might never leave. But instead of regret, she had an epiphany. She awakened to the gifts of a quiet life spent staying put.
In Ordinary Time, Annie challenges the idea that loud lives matter most. Rummaging through her small-town existence, she finds hidden gifts of humor and hope from a life lived quietly. Staying, can itself be a radical act. It takes courage to stay in the places we've always called home, Jones argues, as she paints a portrait of possibility far away from thriving metropolises and Monica Gellar-inspired apartments.
We've long been encouraged to follow our dreams, to pack up and move to new places and leave old lives-and past selves-behind. While there is beauty in these kinds of adventures, Ordinary Time helps us see ourselves right where we are: in the middle of messy, mundane lives, maybe not too far from where we grew up. We don't have to leave to find what we yearn-we can choose to stay, celebrating and honoring our ordinary lives, which might turn out to be bigger and better than we ever imagined.

Henry McKenzie Johnston, "Ottoman and Persian Odysseys: James Morier, Creator of Hajji Baba of Ispahan, and His Brothers"
English | ISBN: 1860643302 | | 264 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan, the story of a likable Iranian rogue caught up in a series of extraordinary and farcical adventures, remains perhaps the most famous of English picaresque novels and, curiously, a favorite among Iranians. First published in 1823, it was an instant best-seller, and is still in print. Little, however, is known of the life of its author, James Morier. Here, for the first time, the reader can follow the fascinating story of James and his two brothers, Jack and David. Their Swiss-born father was a merchant in Smyrna; but during the Napoleonic Wars the brothers, all British citizens although there was only a tiny drop of British blood in their veins, forsook the world of trade to become involved in the exciting world of countering French activities and influence in the Ottoman Empire and Persia. This book is based on a mass of almost unknown family papers and, through the many letters the Moriers wrote to each other from far-flung corners of the globe, throws fresh light on the lives of people caught up in the early years of colonial expansion.

Our City That Year: A Novel by Geetanjali Shree, translated by Daisy Rockwell
English | April 1, 2025 | ISBN: 0063385708 | True EPUB | 432 pages | 3.3 MB
"I highlighted just about every line in this book, and I can't think of a better novel to make sense of our current era." -Molly Odintz,CrimeReads

From the International Booker Prize-winning author-translator duo of Tomb of Sand, a powerful, kaleidoscopic novel about a fractured society, loosely based on the gathering violence that eventuated in the demolition of the Babri Mosque by religious extremists in 1992.
In an unnamed city in India, violence is erupting between Hindus and Muslims, each side viewing the other with suspicion, rage, and blame. As their identities sharpen, friends and colleagues turn against each other. Hospital beds fill up and classrooms empty out. Curfews are imposed. Residents flee en masse.
Three intellectuals find themselves paralyzed by anxiety and fear. Shruti, a creative writer, spends her time writing and rewriting the same sentence. Hanif is sidelined by his academic department for his secular beliefs. And Sharad finds it increasingly difficult to connect with Hanif, his childhood friend. The only one left to bear witness is the novel's unnamed narrator, who hurries to transcribe everything that's happening.
Explosive, raw, and uncompromising, Our City That Year unfolds in a time of rising uncertainty and dread, when nothing will go back to being as it was before. Twenty-five years after its original publication in Hindi, Shree's clarion call to bear witness to the toxic ideology of religious nationalism is timelier than ever, speaking to the growing divisions across global borders.
Translated from the Hindi by Daisy Rockwell

Our Fathers Fought Franco edited by Willy Maley
English | February 4, 2023 | ISBN: 1804250406 | True EPUB | 192 pages | 45.8 MB
James Maley, George Watters, Donald Renton and Archibald Williams were members of Machine Gun Company No. 2 of the XV International Brigade. This is the first book to focus on a small group of men from different starting-points, ended up in the same battleground at Jarama, and then in the same prisons after capture by Franco's forces.

Their remarkable story is told both in their own words and in the recollections of their sons and daughters, through a prison notebook, newspaper reports, stills cut from newsreels, interviews, anecdotes and memories, with a foreword by Daniel Gray.
Our Fathers Fought Franco is a collective biography that promises to add significantly to the understanding of the motives of those who 'went because their open eyes could see no other way'.

Our NHS: A History of Britain's Best Loved Institution by Andrew Seaton
English | August 22, 2023 | ISBN: 0300276524, 0300268270, 9780300271775 | True EPUB | 400 pages | 6.6 MB
An engaging, inclusive history of the NHS, exploring its surprising survival-and the people who have kept it running

In recent decades, a wave of appreciation for the NHS has swept across the UK. Britons have clapped for frontline workers and championed the service as a distinctive national achievement. All this has happened in the face of ideological opposition, marketization, and workforce crises. But how did the NHS become what it is today?
In this wide-ranging history, Andrew Seaton examines the full story of the NHS. He traces how the service has changed and adapted, bringing together the experiences of patients, staff from Britain and abroad, and the service's wider supporters and opponents. He explains not only why it survived the neoliberalism of the late twentieth century but also how it became a key marker of national identity. Seaton emphasizes the resilience of the NHS-perpetually "in crisis" and yet perennially enduring-as well as the political values it embodies and the work of those who have tirelessly kept it afloat.

Out of Sight: An Undercover Investigator's Fight for Animal Rights and Her Own Survival by Gail A. Eisnitz
English | May 6, 2025 | ISBN: 1510782338, 9781510782389 | True EPUB | 264 pages | 1.3 MB
Out of Sightis both an investigative deep dive into the meat industry's treatment of farm animals, and a story of resilience and, ultimately, professional and personal triumph.

This insightful and often harrowing memoir chronicles the author's forty-year career conducting undercover investigations and documenting animal abuse in the U.S. meat industry while simultaneously coping with a mysterious and incapacitating medical condition. Due to the isolation she experienced in childhood suffering from an undiagnosed neurological disorder, Gail Eisnitz found solace with animals, especially those who were neglected or injured. Her childhood desire to rescue animals was eventually realized when she was hired as staff writer at the largest animal protection organization in the United States. She later transitioned to become the only female cruelty investigator at that organization, initiating investigations into many issues, including violations in puppy mills and the dog racing industry, ritual animal sacrifice, factory farms, and slaughterhouses. Her continued efforts-ultimately as chief investigator for the Humane Farming Association (HFA)-resulted in an annual multimillion-dollar appropriation for enforcement of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, the first funding for what had been a zero-budgeted law for more than forty years.
The author's campaign to expose the meat industry was marked by high-level cover-ups, personal health challenges, violent encounters, and ongoing legal battles as she fought to hold animal abusers accountable.
Out of Sightisa powerful exploration of resilience, healing, and a lifelong mission for justice, and a call to action for every reader who dreams of a kinder world.

Oxota: A Short Russian Novel by Lyn Hejinian
English | March 5, 2019 | ISBN: 0819578762 | True EPUB | 292 pages | 3.2 MB
A verse novel composed of 14-line stanzas inspired by Pushkin's Evgeny Onegin

Over the course of nearly a decade (1983-1991), author Lyn Hejinian visited the USSR seven times, staying frequently with her friends the poet Arkadii Dragomoshchenko and his wife Zina in Leningrad. During this period, she embarked on translating into English several volumes of Dragomoshcheko's poetry, and the two poets began an extensive correspondence, exchanging hundreds of letters until Dragomoshchenko's death in 2012. During her fifth visit, in conversation with Dragomoshchenko and other poets, she decided to write a novel reflecting her experiences of literary and lived life in Leningrad and Moscow. Cognizant of a general sense that the Russian novel is stereotypically "long," she determined that hers would be "short." What resulted is an experimental novel whose structure (284 chapters, each 14 lines long) pays homage to Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, which is generally regarded to be the first Russian novel: a verse novel composed in 14-line stanzas. From time to time, various members of Dragomoshchenko's circle of friends offered suggestions for the novel, as readers will note. There's abundant narrative content, but anecdotes and events are presented in non-linear form, since they unfolded over extended periods of time and thus came to Hejinian's attention piecemeal.
Oxota (which means variously "huntress," "hunt," and "desire" in Russian) is a novel in which contexts, rather than contents, are kept in the foreground. Allen Ginsberg, who himself visited the USSR, did not like Oxota. He said that it wasn't realistic; Hejinian thinks that it is.

Ozempic, la révolution de l'obésité: L'enquête de Fabrice Delaye
Français | 30 avril 2025 | ISBN: 2415011991, 9782415012007 | True EPUB | 272 pages | 0.7 MB

Abraham Ascher, "P. A. Stolypin: The Search for Stability in Late Imperial Russia"
English | ISBN: 0804745471 | 2002 | 497 pages | PDF | 22 MB
This is the first comprehensive biography in any language of Russia's leading statesman in the period following the Revolution of 1905. Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs from 1906 to 1911 (when he was assassinated), P. A. Stolypin aroused deep passions among his contemporaries as well as subsequent historians. In the twilight of Nicholas II's reign he was virtually the only man who seemed to have a clear notion of how to reform the socioeconomic and political system of the empire. His efforts in that direction-in agriculture, local administration, religious freedom, social legislation, the legal system-were radically new departures for the Russian state. His detractors disdained him as a power-hungry, coldhearted politician who was unscrupulous in pursuing his own career and would use any means to restore the tsarist autocracy following the frightening turbulence of 1905. Stolypin's admirers, however, argued that he was a man of vision who pursued policies that would have transformed the country into a modern state with social and political institutions comparable to those of the West. Lenin's celebrated denunciation of Stolypin as "hangman-in-chief" set the tone for official Soviet work on his career. In the West, some historians and émigré writers, most notably Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, erred in the opposite direction. By contrast, this book-on the basis of extensive Russian archival documentation only recently available to historians-seeks to provide a balanced portrait of Stolypin that encompasses the complex, even divergent, impulses that motivated him. Although Stolypin did not shrink from the use of force to stamp out unrest, he lamented the shedding of blood and much preferred nonviolent means to curb the opposition. In foreign affairs, he was uncompromising in his insistence that Russia should avoid entanglements that could lead to military conflict. To be sure, he was deeply committed to monarchical rule, but he did not consider it advisable to abolish the elected legislature or to deprive it of its authority. Stolypin's program, a blend of reformism, authoritarianism, and nationalism, was more likely than any other to lead Russia toward social and political stability. But Tsar Nicholas II, his entourage, and ultra-conservatives could not bring themselves to yield a portion of their privileges and prerogatives in return for a reduced, though still significant, role in a changed Russia. They succeeded in undermining the Prime Minister's attempts at fundamental reform and thus scuttled Imperial Russia's last such attempt before its demise.

Melissa Yeager, "Pacts and Alliances in History: Diplomatic Strategy and the Politics of Coalitions "
English | ISBN: 184885773X | 2012 | 320 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Agreements between nations are the fundamental framework for the ordering of international affairs; and their successes and failures have led to some of the great turning points in modern history. A unique collaboration by historians and political scientists, Pacts and Alliances in History explores some of the fundamental questions of diplomacy: what are the common denominators shared by successful alliances? Why do pacts and alliances disintegrate? And is the eventual demise of pacts and alliances inevitable? Eleven empirical case-studies across five continents, including three chapters devoted to US alliances around the world, are used to illustrate entirely new diplomatic concepts and political theories - arguing for a more nuanced understanding of how agreements work. This study will be important reading for the next generation of policymakers and will become the starting point for the future debate on coalitions, multi-lateral organizations, and diplomacy in History and International Relations.

John Tusa, "Pain in the Arts"
English | ISBN: 1780768176 | 2014 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Over a distinguished career in cultural leadership, management and journalism spanning almost 30 years, John Tusa has amassed a unique experience of the arts world, the political controversies it faces and the battles it continues to fight. His new book is a fearless and passionate defense of the performing and visual arts at a time of increasing 'Pain in the Arts'.

Tusa addresses the controversies in the arts that must be resolved so urgently today, including the ever-flowing arguments on whether they should be useful before they are excellent. He gives guidance on how the arts can survive in the downturn and explains why the case must always be made that they deserve special treatment. He writes an excoriating critique of the language of Whitehall bureaucracy and shows how crucial to the nation's health and wealth are the small regional arts projects alongside our big arts institutions like the Barbican or National Theatre. He also draws on his expertise as Chair of the Clore Leadership Programme to discuss those increasingly complex questions - practical, personal, professional - that today's and tomorrow's cultural leaders must face, including the qualities of character needed to succeed and what a revolution in arts leadership might achieve. The backdrop throughout is Tusa's personal story of discovery and love of the culture he strives to defend in hard times.

Palazzos of Power: Central Stations of the Philadelphia Electric Company, 1900-1930 by Aaron V. Wunsch, Joseph E. B. Elliott
English | November 1, 2016 | ISBN: 1616895004 | True EPUB | 160 pages | 20.3 MB
"If it isn't Electric, it isn't Modern." Such was the slogan of the Philadelphia Electric Company, developer of an unprecedented network of massive metropolitan power stations servicing greater Philadelphia at the turn of the twentieth century. These once-brilliant sentinels of civic utility and activity were designed to convey 'solidity and immensity' in an age of deep public skepticism. They now stand vacant and decaying, a blight in the eyes of city planners and a beacon to urban explorers.

The first book on the buildings and machines that made possible the electrification of the United States, Palazzos of Power offers a visual and analytical exploration of architecture, technology, place, loss, and reuse. With a foreword by David Nye, this collection of Joseph Elliott's beautiful large-format photographs reveals the urban landscape, monumental spaces, giant machinery, and intricate controls that made up the central station. Aaron Wunsch's essay provides historical context on the social and political climate.
