As such, this book looks at the direct physiological effects of drugs and toxins, answering questions such as "Why does hypernatremia cause seizures?" or "Why can synthetic cannabinoids cause fatal complications, yet THC does not?" or the very timely "What is the mechanism by which an opiate overdose causes death?" Coverage primarily centers on the pathological derangements and physiological consequences of the actions of drugs and toxins, and the cellular mechanisms by which those pathological consequences arise.
Organized using an organ system approach, sections are divided into major target organ systems and sections included for affected organs and tissues. While some drugs affect more than one organ system―and some patients will have multiple drugs present―the book's categorization and organization take this approach to be readily usable for the reader. Case reports are included with additional patient data to show the effects of specific toxins and poisons both alone and in combination with natural disease. Color figures illustrate all aspects of drug or toxin impact on postmortem casework including the scene of death, the deceased persons, and the organs and tissues affected.

More than a century ago an Aboriginal community in Victoria campaigned for recognition of their right to occupy and control the small acreage they had farmed for 25 years. Others wanted to develop this tract. Government spokesmen denied that the occupants had inherited any rights to this land and declared that, anyway, they were not really Aborigines. This book is about the rebellion at Coranderrk Aboriginal Station between 1874 and 1886. It describes how Coranderrk families fought to keep their land. To explain why they fought I must begin with the years before, to show what this 'miserable spadeful of ground' meant to them, and how they came to be there. Finally, I sketch what ultimately happened.

First published in 1998, 12 years after the death of its author Diane Barwick, Rebellion at Coranderrk was an attempt to rectify some of the injustices of the past two-hundred-plus years in Australia, and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Reconstructing a Maritime Past argues that rather than applying geo-ethnic labels to shipwrecks to describe "Greek" or "Roman" seafaring, a more intriguing alternative emphasizes a maritime culture's valorization of the Mediterranean Sea. Doing so creates new questions and research agendas to understand the past human relationship with the sea.
This study makes this argument in three sections. Chapters 1 and 2, contrasting intellectual histories of maritime archaeological interpretive approaches common in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, propose that the former perspective - which embodies contemporary and fluid perceptions of culture - is a better theoretical framework for future research. Chapters 3-5 re-interpret the corpus of submerged sites in the Mediterranean Sea with this approach, arguing that this dataset does not represent "Phoenician," "Muslim," or "Byzantine" seafaring, but the practices of a maritime culture. Key to this section is the author's method that utilizes superimposed polygons to model patterns of maritime activity, generating centennial results at different scales. Having built the models of a maritime culture's valorization of the Mediterranean Sea, Chapter 6 contains the first comparisons of these models to other datasets, questioning the relevance of textual media to understand maritime activity, while finding closer analogues with other archaeological corpora.
By deconstructing interpretive methods in maritime archaeology, offering a new synthesizing interpretive approach that is scalable and decoupled from past perceptions, and critically examining the applicability of various media to illuminate the past maritime experience, this book will appeal to scholars at various stages of their careers.
