Tensor Algebra and Tensor Analysis for Engineers: With Applications to Continuum Mechanics by Mikhail Itskov
English | PDF (True) | 2007 | 244 Pages | ISBN : 3540360468 | 2 MB
Like many other textbooks the present one is based on a lecture course given by the author for master students of the RWTH Aachen University. In spite of a somewhat di?cult matter those students were able to endure and, as far as I know, are still ?ne. I wish the same for the reader of the book. Although the present book can be referred to as a textbook one ?nds only little plain text inside. I tried to explain the matter in a brief way, nevert- lessgoinginto detailwherenecessary.Ialsoavoidedtediousintroductions and lengthy remarks about the signi?cance of one topic or another. A reader - terested in tensor algebra and tensor analysis but preferring, however, words instead of equations can close this book immediately after having read the preface. The reader is assumed to be familiar with the basics of matrix algebra and continuum mechanics and is encouraged to solve at least some of num- ous exercises accompanying every chapter. Having read many other texts on mathematics and mechanics I was always upset vainly looking for solutions to the exercises which seemed to be most interesting for me. For this reason, all the exercises here are supplied with solutions amounting a substantial part of the book. Without doubt, this part facilitates a deeper understanding of the subject. As a research work this book is open for discussion which will certainly contribute to improving the text for further editions. In this sense, I am very gratefulfor comments, suggestionsand constructivecriticismfromthe reader.

Tensors: The Mathematics of Relativity Theory and Continuum Mechanics by Anadijiban Das
English | PDF (True) | 2007 | 300 Pages | ISBN : 0387694684 | 3.1 MB
Tensor algebra and tensor analysis were developed by Riemann, Christo?el, Ricci, Levi-Civita and others in the nineteenth century. The special theory of relativity, as propounded by Einstein in 1905, was elegantly expressed by Minkowski in terms of tensor ?elds in a ?at space-time. In 1915, Einstein formulated the general theory of relativity, in which the space-time manifold is curved. The theory is aesthetically and intellectually satisfying. The general theory of relativity involves tensor analysis in a pseudo- Riemannian manifold from the outset. Later, it was realized that even the pre-relativistic particle mechanics and continuum mechanics can be elegantly formulated in terms of tensor analysis in the three-dimensional Euclidean space. In recent decades, relativistic quantum ?eld theories, gauge ?eld theories, and various uni?ed ?eld theories have all used tensor algebra analysis exhaustively. This book develops from abstract tensor algebra to tensor analysis in va- ous di?erentiable manifolds in a mathematically rigorous and logically coherent manner. The material is intended mainly for students at the fourth-year and ?fth-year university levels and is appropriate for students majoring in either mathematical physics or applied mathematics.

Thawing: Permafrost Permafrost Carbon in a Warming Arctic by J. van Huissteden
English | 2020 | EPUB | 520 Pages | ISBN : 3030313786 | 97.7 MB
This book provides a cross-disciplinary overview of permafrost and the carbon cycle by providing an introduction into the geographical distribution of permafrost, with a focus on the distribution of permafrost and its soil carbon reservoirs. The chapters explain the basic physical properties and processes of permafrost soils: ice, mineral and organic components, and how these interact with climate, vegetation and geomorphological processes. In particular, the book covers the role of the large quantities of ice in many permafrost soils which are crucial to understanding carbon cycle processes.

An explanation is given on how permafrost becomes loaded with ice and carbon. Gas hydrates are also introduced. Structures and processes formed by the intense freeze-thaw action in the active layer are considered (e.g. ice wedging, cryoturbation), and the processes that occur as the permafrost thaws, (pond and lake formation, erosion).
The book introduces soil carbon accumulation and decomposition mechanisms and how these are modified in a permafrost environment. A separate chapter deals with deep permafrost carbon, gas reservoirs and recently discovered methane emission phenomena from regions such as Northwest Siberia and the Siberian yedoma permafrost.

The Canadian Space Program: From Black Brant to the International Space Station by Andrew B. Godefroy
English | PDF (True) | 2017 | 336 Pages | ISBN : 3319401041 | 24.2 MB
Canada's space efforts from its origins towards the end of the Second World War through to its participation in the ISS today are revealed in full in this complete and carefully researched history. Employing recently declassified archives and many never previously used sources, author Andrew B. Godefroy explains the history of the program through its policy and many fascinating projects. He assesses its effectiveness as a major partner in both US and international space programs, examines its current national priorities and capabilities, and outlines the country's plans for the future.

Despite being the third nation to launch a satellite into space after the Soviet Union and the United States; being a major partner in the US space shuttle program with the iconic Canadarm; being an international leader in the development of space robotics; and acting as one of the five major partners in the ISS, the Canadian Space Program remains one of the least well-known national efforts of the space age. This book attempts to shed a clearer light on the progress made by the CSA thus far, with more ambitious goals ahead. Technical information, diagrams, glossaries, a chronology, and extensive notes on sources are also included in this volume.

The General Theory of Homogenization: A Personalized Introduction by Luc Tartar
English | PDF (True) | 2010 | 466 Pages | ISBN : 3642051944 | 5.2 MB
Homogenization is not about periodicity, or Gamma-convergence, but about understanding which effective equations to use at macroscopic level, knowing which partial differential equations govern mesoscopic levels, without using probabilities (which destroy physical reality); instead, one uses various topologies of weak type, the G-convergence of Sergio Spagnolo, the H-convergence of François Murat and the author, and some responsible for the appearance of nonlocal effects, which many theories in continuum mechanics or physics guessed wrongly.

For a better understanding of 20th century science, new mathematical tools must be introduced, like the author's H-measures, variants by Patrick Gérard, and others yet to be discovered.

The Hard Edge of Soft Power: Mega-Events, Geopolitics, and Making Nations Great Again by Sven Daniel Wolfe
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2025 | 165 Pages | ISBN : 9819635144 | 4.9 MB
This book explores the linkages between geopolitics and hosting mega-events. It encompasses and transcends the international and domestic dimensions of soft power to unpack how mega-events shape cities and societies through notions of unity and greatness, but also investigates local developments beneath the Potemkin surface of the global spectacle. Drawing on a global range of case studies from Eastern Europe, Western Europe, North America, South America, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia, this volume features the sensitivity of grounded local research framed within geopolitical perspectives. Together, they present an international and transdisciplinary understanding of the local and global political implications of hosting mega-events. The volume reveals what hides under the mega-event spectacle: problems that - regardless of national context - most often occur to the detriment of host populations.

The Ioffe Drift by Ivar Murdmaa
English | PDF,EPUB | 2021 | 194 Pages | ISBN : 3030828700 | 109.9 MB
The Discovery of the calcareous Ioffe Drift in the SW Atlantic in 2010 opens new perspectives in the contourite theory. Although demonstrating similar behavior relative to bottom water dynamics, rather rare and poorly studied calcareous contourites differ from their terrigenous analogs in origin, grain-size distribution, chemical and mineral composition of sedimentary particles.

The detailed multidisciplinary study of the Ioffe Drift produces new knowledge on biogenic contourites deposited in pelagic realm, in conditions of low biological productivity and terrigenous material supply, under the influence of the Antarctic Bottom Water flow from the Vema Channel. The major intervals of prevailing erosion are inferred on the drift from 2.51/2.59 to 1.9 Ma and from 1.6 to 0.81 Ma thus indicating strong paleoceanographic changes most likely associated with the reorganization of deep-sea circulation and increased bottom water production in the Southern Ocean during the Early Pleistocene and, in particular, around the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.

The Linearized Theory of Elasticity by William S. Slaughter
English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 557 Pages | ISBN : 0817641173 | 68.2 MB
This book is derived from notes used in teaching a first-year graduate-level course in elasticity in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. This is a modern treatment of the linearized theory of elasticity, which is presented as a specialization of the general theory of continuum mechanics. It includes a comprehensive introduction to tensor analysis, a rigorous development of the governing field equations with an emphasis on recognizing the assumptions and approximations in herent in the linearized theory, specification of boundary conditions, and a survey of solution methods for important classes of problems. Two- and three-dimensional problems, torsion of noncircular cylinders, variational methods, and complex variable methods are covered. This book is intended as the text for a first-year graduate course in me chanical or civil engineering. Sufficient depth is provided such that the text can be used without a prerequisite course in continuum mechanics, and the material is presented in such a way as to prepare students for subsequent courses in nonlinear elasticity, inelasticity, and fracture mechanics. Alter natively, for a course that is preceded by a course in continuum mechanics, there is enough additional content for a full semester of linearized elasticity.

The Mathematics of Urban Morphology by Luca D'Acci
English | EPUB | 2019 | 564 Pages | ISBN : 3030123804 | 102.5 MB
This edited volume provides an essential resource for urban morphology, the study of urban forms and structures, offering a much-needed mathematical perspective. Experts on a variety of mathematical modeling techniques provide new insights into specific aspects of the field, such as street networks, sustainability, and urban growth. The chapters collected here make a clear case for the importance of tools and methods to understand, model, and simulate the formation and evolution of cities.

The chapters cover a wide variety of topics in urban morphology, and are conveniently organized by their mathematical principles. The first part covers fractals and focuses on how self-similar structures sort themselves out through competition. This is followed by a section on cellular automata, and includes chapters exploring how they generate fractal forms. Networks are the focus of the third part, which includes street networks and other forms as well. Chapters that examine complexity and its relation to urban structures are in part four. The fifth part introduces a variety of other quantitative models that can be used to study urban morphology. In the book's final section, a series of multidisciplinary commentaries offers readers new ways of looking at the relationship between mathematics and urban forms.
Being the first book on this topic, Mathematics of Urban Morphology will be an invaluable resource for applied mathematicians and anyone studying urban morphology. Additionally, anyone who is interested in cities from the angle of economics, sociology, architecture, or geography will also find it useful.
"This book provides a useful perspective on the state of the art with respect to urban morphology in general and mathematics as tools and frames to disentangle the ideas that pervade arguments about form and function in particular. There is much to absorb in the pages that follow and there are many pointers to ways in which these ideas can be linked to related theories of cities, urban design and urban policy analysis as well as new movements such as the role of computation in cities and the idea of the smart city. Much food for thought. Read on, digest, enjoy." From the foreword by Michael Batty

The Race to the Moon Chronicled in Stamps, Postcards, and Postmarks: A Story of Puffery vs. the Pragmatic by Umberto Cavallaro
English | EPUB | 2018 | 349 Pages | ISBN : 3319921525 | 352.1 MB
The story of the famed race to the Moon between the US and the USSR has been told countless times. The strategies of these two superpowers have often been paralleled in a way that highlights their fight for dominance and efforts to develop needed new technologies.

This book will show how beneath these surface similarities, the two competing nations employed very different core tactics. It provides a new perspective of the history of the space race by analyzing that history through philately - that is, from the images on postage stamps, post cards, and letters in circulation at that time. Through this fascinating historical visual record, the author shows how the propaganda-heavy approach of the USSR eventually lost out to the more pragmatic approach of the United States.

Arguments are given for constitutive equations appropriate for dispersed multicomponent ?ow. The forms of the constitutive equations are derived from the principles of continuum mechanics applied to the components and their int- actions. The solutions of problems of hydromechanics of ordinary continua are used as motivation for the forms of certain constitutive equations in multicom- nent materials. The balance of the book is devoted to the study of problems of hydrodynamics of multicomponent ?ows. Many materials are homogeneous in the sense that each part of the material has the same response to a given set of stimuli as all of the other parts. An example of such a material is pure water. Formulation of equations describing the behavior of homogeneous materials is well understood, and is described in numerous standard textbooks. Many other materials, both manufactured and occurring in nature, are not - mogeneous. Such materials are often given names such as mixtures or composites.

Thermal Non-Equilibrium in Heterogeneous Media by Marcelo J.S. de Lemos
English | PDF (True) | 2016 | 124 Pages | ISBN : 3319146653 | 3.7 MB
This book presents, in a self-contained fashion, a series of studies on flow and heat transfer in porous media, in which distinct energy balances are considered for the porous matrix and for the permeating fluid. Detailed mathematical modeling is presented considering both volume and time averaging operators simultaneously applied to the governing equations. System involving combustion in the gaseous phase, moving bed and double-diffusion mechanism are analyzed. Numerical results are presented for each case. In the end, this book contains the description of a tool that might benefit engineers in developing and designing more efficient thermal equipment.
