Atmospheres in the Solar System: Comparative Aeronomy By
2002 | 381 Pages | ISBN: 0875909892 | PDF | 34 MB
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series.Atmospheres are crucial components of our universe. They are the only observable regions of stars and giant planets, both within and beyond our solar system. Some terrestrial-size bodies (Venus, Earth, Mars, Titan and Triton) have permanent atmospheres while others (e.g., Mercury, Moon, Io, and Europa) have tenuous gaseous envelopes that change daily. Comets are tiny bodies by planetary yardsticks, but their atmospheres can be the largest visible objects in the night sky. Atmospheric science strives to understand how such a diverse set of atmospheres form, evolve, and disappear.Content:

Atmospheric Science Across the Stratopause By
2000 | 342 Pages | ISBN: 0875909817 | PDF | 47 MB
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series. In recent years, two separate geophysical research cultures have developed in the United States to study the atmosphere: one of space scientists, who focus on the mesosphere, thermosphere and ionosphere, and the other of atmospheric scientists, who focus on the troposphere and stratosphere. The boundary between these two research domains roughly coincides with the stratopause (50 km). While the division ofthe atmosphere into layers and boundaries serves as a useful way to characterize the various chemical and dynamical processes that distinguish these layers, these boundaries are not impermeable. To understand such critical issues as global change, geophysicists must study the atmosphere as an integrated system. The purpose of this monograph is to highlight those studies that consider the coupling of these two regions and thus bring together two scientific specialties (atmospheric science and space science) that are often considered separately.Content:

ATTD 2011 Yearbook: Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes, Third Edition By
2012 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 1118279298 | PDF | 2 MB
The traditional agents for controlling the levels of glucose in the blood remain important therapies but they have their downside from the point of view of tolerability and side effects. Moreover, they appear not to be able to counter the natural history deterioration of the disease in terms of the onset of diabetic-related complications. Recent years have seen an influx of new treatment therapies and technologies aimed at achieving better glycaemic control for diabetic patients such as liraglutide (Novo Nordisk) and saxagliptin (BMS/Astra-Zeneca) and insulin pumps, away from the more traditional therapies used (classic insulin therapy, oral hypoglycaemics). This book outlines these new technologies/treatments by collating the best journal articles published in the last year, and providing expert analysis on each one. Advanced Technologies and Treatment for Diabetes 3E brings together and critically analyses the last year's most important articles published in the world's leading medical journals on this topic. Chapters are focused on the most current hot topic areas such as: new methods of insulin delivery; internet and IT use in treatment of diabetes; bariatric surgery & diabetes; and immunotherapy for type 1 diabetes. Each chapter includes abstracts of the published articles, scientific conclusions made, as well as annotations and a comments and analysis section from the relevant chapter editor, each of which being a well-known expert in the field. All researchers in the fields of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism will find this book extremely useful, as will diabetes technology developers, and specialist endocrinologists involved with the care of diabetic patients.Content: Chapter 1 Self?Monitoring of Blood Glucose (pages 1-20): Satish K. Robert E. Larzelere PhD, "Authoritative Parenting: Synthesizing Nurturance and Discipline for Optimal Child Development"
English | ISBN: 1433812401 | 2012 | 280 pages | PDF | 4 MB
In this book, leading scholars update our thinking about authoritative parenting and address three unresolved issues: mechanisms of the style's effectiveness, variations of effectiveness across cultures, and untangling how parents influence children from how children influence them.

Psychologist Diana Baumrind's revolutionary prototype of parenting, called authoritative parenting, combines the best of various parenting styles. In contrast to previous emphases on parental responsiveness alone (permissive parenting) or on demandingness alone (authoritarian parenting), authoritative parenting combines high levels of both responsiveness and demandingness. The result is an appropriate mix of warm nurturance and firm discipline.
By integrating perspectives from developmental and clinical psychology, the book will inform prevention and intervention efforts to help parents maximize their children's potential.

Back-Arc Spreading Systems: Geological, Biological, Chemical, and Physical Interactions By
2006 | 305 Pages | ISBN: 0875904319 | PDF | 39 MB
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series. New ocean crust is continuously created where tectonic plates diverge. A distinctive type of oceanic crust is formed by back-arc spreading systems that parallel oceanic island arcs on the side away from the subducting plate. Volatile-rich and spatially variable, back-arc spreading systems are a natural laboratory for multi-disciplinary studies of seafloor creation, the flow of magma from the deep earth, and the hydrothermal ecosystems that this flow sustains. Derived from the prestigious Ridge 2000 InterRidge Theoretical Institute held in 2004, Back-Arc Spreading Systems: Geological, Biological, Chemical, and Physical Interactions reviews the state of the science, with select case studies.Experienced researchers in, and students of, marine geology, biological oceanography, marine geochemistry, volcanology, petrology, and geo- and paleomagnetism will find this volume a significant resource now and for the near future.Content:

The authors are members of three Collaborative Research Centers in Aachen, Munich and Stuttgart concerned with hypersonic vehicles. A major part of the research presented here deals with experimental and numerical aerodynamic topics ranging from low speed to hypersonic flow past the external configuration and through inlet and nozzle. Mathematicians and engineers jointly worked on aspects of flight mechanics like trajectory optimization, stability, control and flying qualities. Structural research and development was predominantly coupled to the needs for high temperature resistant structures for space vehicles.

Bauen mit Betonfertigteilen im Hochbau, 2. Auflage By Dr.?Ing. Hubert Bachmann, Dr.?Ing. Alfred Steinle, Prof. Dr.?Ing. Volker Hahn(auth.)
2010 | 151 Pages | ISBN: 3433018502 | PDF | 2 MB
This book provides a comprehensive insight into precast concrete construction today. The reader learns of the many fa?e design options made possible by this method of building. The authors also attempt to convey to engineers and architects the range of possibilities opened up by works prefabrication, thus preparing the way for the cost-effective use of concrete precast construction and for its further development. In addition to making general observations on actual building with concrete precast sections, the authors explain exactly what is involved in designing such sections; they also give the reader an insight into load-bearing elements and fa?es. Reinforcing systems are dealt with, and connecting elements and specific static-constructive problems are explained in detail, as are the requirements of the European domestic market. The description of the precast concrete section manufacturing process provides the reader with the necessary understanding of the individual characteristics of this industrialized method of building.
