This book interprets Jesus Christ as a complicated, disunified literary character in Middle English literature, where he appears variously as king, traitor, victorious conqueror, sacrificial lamb, heroic knight, lover, and spouse-often as several contradictory figures in a single work. These tropes derive from Scripture, doctrines about Christ's two natures, and theories of redemption. This book examines the full range of representations in Southern Passion, Northern Passion, Pepysian Gospel Harmony, Stanzaic Life of Christ, Cursor Mundi, Nicholas Love's Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ, Sir John Mandeville's Book, the York Play, and Julian of Norwich's Revelation of Love. Although Christ's two natures are well represented in existing scholarship, many traditions have been overlooked, including commonplace treatments of Christ as both a traitor and king, conqueror and sacrificial lamb, hero and lover. As writers call upon audiences to feel compassion for Jesus's suffering, they almost universally express antipathy toward his Jewish torturers, complicating our ideas about affective piety. In these works, the Virgin Mary is less exemplary for her compassion than for her understanding of doctrine. In short, this book offers new perspectives on vernacular Christology between about 1275 and 1475.

The end of Britain's empire in Southeast Asia in the wake of World War II generated new opportunities for colonial subjects across the region to reimagine themselves as citizens of a dizzying array of potential new nations. While post-war optimism and a global push for decolonisation created an environment where myriad communities felt a palpable sense of possibility for bringing their aspirations of nationhood to life, many of these desires were unfulfilled. Imagining Malaya is an exploration of one of those many imagined nations that never came to be. It narrates a series of seemingly disparate and contradictory political acts by the Peranakan Chinese - a creolised community borne of intermarriage between the earliest Chinese migrants to the region and indigenous Malays - in the post-World War II period to demonstrate that the community were, in fact, seeking to bring to life a cosmopolitan, inclusive, and multi-ethnic imagination of the Malay(si)an nation.
Engaging in a critical re-examination of the intertwined processes of decolonization and nation-making, Imagining Malaya provides an alternative reading of Malay(si)a's path to merdeka (independence) from the perspective of the Peranakan. It narrates how a once powerful community at the centre of Malay(si)an politics and society came undone by their attempts to present an alternative imagination of the nation which challenged the ethnocentrism that came to dominate the country's political life. Rewriting the Peranakan into the centre of Malaysia's national story rather than its periphery is a parable on the complexities and pitfalls of attempting to forge a representative nation-state from a multi-ethnic society during the transition between colony and nation. By bringing the Peranakan imaginary of the nation to life, Bernard Z. Keo makes a case for how studying nations that were unrealized can reveal just as much as investigating that that were.

This book explores the experiences of 'Indo-Mozambicans,' citizens and residents of Mozambique who can trace their origins to the Indian subcontinent, a region affected by competing colonialisms during the twentieth century. Drawing from ethnographic interviews, the author illustrates why migration developed as both an identity marker and a survival tool for Indo-Mozambicans living in Maputo, in response to the series of independence movements and prolonged period of geo-political uncertainty that extended from 1947 to 1992. A unique examination of post-colonialism, the book argues that four pivotal moments in history forced migratory patterns and ethnic identity formations to emerge among Indo-Mozambicans, namely, the end of the British empire in India and the subsequent partition of India and Pakistan in 1947; the end of the Portuguese empire in India, with the annexation of Goa, Daman and Diu in 1961; the independence of Mozambique from Portugal in 1975; and the civil war of Mozambique from 1977 to 1992. Framing these historical markers as trigger points for shifts in migration and identity formation, this book demonstrates the layered experiences of people subject to Portuguese colonialism and highlights the important perspective of those 'left behind' in migration studies.
