Achieving Business Success with GIS By Bruce Douglas(auth.)
2008 | 154 Pages | ISBN: 0470727241 | PDF | 3 MB
Written at a practical level, suited to the business audience, this exceptional book explores the business environment of making GIS successful. It applies academic rigor to practical and commercial implementation issues and offers viewpoints from all parties involved in GIS implementation. Achieving Business Success with GIS provides tangible advice ranging from technical and financial to organizational and commercial. It is unique in that it does not stop short of providing, without hype or embellishment, practical advice and real examples regarding the total cost of ownership of a project or finance and return investment of GIS products.Achieving Business Success with GIS highlights that the use of GIS technology needs to be focused on the business issues, not the technology. The book begins by describing the use of GIS in a global context within a business environment as the background to outlining the need for organizations to have a strategy for their GIS. The book then goes on to explore the elements of a GIS strategy and explains issues which are relevant for such approaches and how to go about developing it. In the closing chapters of this book, the process of specifying and tendering for a GIS are discussed to ensure that the focus of the reader remains on the business issues of the organization. This is followed by examples of the best and worst Geographic Information Systems including a discussion on Google Earth and Web 2.0. The combination of the statistics from the GIS / Spatial surveys and the author's consulting experiences make this book an invaluable resource for GIS managers in government (federal, state and local) and utilities, organisations using GIS, and students and lecturers in this field.Content: Chapter 1 Introduction (pages 1-6): Chapter 2 The Spatial Information Industry (pages 7-31): Chapter 3 Introducing the Elements of a GIS Strategy (pages 33-39): Chapter 4 Developing the Business Focus (pages 41-45): Chapter 5 Developing the Data/Information Focus (pages 47-64): Chapter 6 Developing the Organisational Focus (pages 65-73): Chapter 7 Developing the Application and Technology Focus (pages 75-89): Chapter 8 Developing a GIS Strategy (pages 91-93): Chapter 9 Cost/Benefit Analysis/Return on Investment (pages 95-118): Chapter 10 Selecting a GIS (pages 119-137): Chapter 11 Implementing GIS (pages 139-145): Chapter 12 The Best and the Worst (pages 147-150): Chapter 13 Closing Remarks (page 151):

Across Cultures and Crisis: A Memoir of China Before and During Covid-19
by Thomas Ridgedell
English | 2024 | ASIN: B0D8W93J1R | 218 Pages | True ePUB | 2.5 MB

An intimate, expository, and important account of an American living in China leading up to and during the Covid-19 outbreak, Thomas Ridgedell's observations gently rebuke the Western media narrative that China is a place where people live in absolute oppression and fear of their government.
Ridgedell, a Ph.D., and a former American university instructor, taught History at a high school while living in Wuxi, a city outside of Shanghai, from 2018 to 2022. Across Cultures and Crisis is his thorough and accessible overview of the political and religious ideologies, social structures, and economic considerations, of one of the world's fastest developing countries and home to over a billion people.
While he was on a trip to Japan in the winter of 2019-2020, unsettling news began emerging that a virus in China was spiraling out of control. For the time, Ridgedell chose to remain in Japan, until finally the Chinese border was suddenly sealed. In February 2020 a small travel window presented itself to return to Wuxi. Ridgedell entered an immediate mandatory 14-day quarantine in a Wuxi hotel. When the isolation period was over, he experienced a very different China than the one he had known before.
Leaving Wuxi was prohibited, mask-wearing and temperature checks became ubiquitous, and an app on his phone would show if he was a level green and permitted to enter public spaces. Ridgedell then resumed teaching his students remotely. The people of China followed the restrictions without argument, and due to that China was able to lower restrictions and reopen many more schools than the United States from 2020 to 2021.
In 2022, when Covid-19 regulations began to tighten again, Ridgedell made the decision to go back home to the United States, along with a significant exodus of other foreigners.
From temples to grottoes, meandering canals to mountains, hot pots, ancient history, and clamorous cities under construction, Ridgedell deftly weaves personal experience with cultural context, and reveals a very different China than the one we read about in the news - one where the people are ambitious, lively, and patriotic.

Active Tectonics and Seismic Potential of Alaska By
2008 | 427 Pages | ISBN: 0875904440 | PDF | 46 MB
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series. This multidisciplinary monograph provides the first modern integrative summary focused on the most spectacular active tectonic systems in North America.Encompassing seismology, tectonics, geology, and geodesy, it includes papers that summarize the state of knowledge, including background material for those unfamiliar with the region; address global hypotheses using data from Alaska; and test important global hypotheses using data from this region. It is organized around four major themes:subduction and great earthquakes at the Aleutian Arc,the transition from strike slip to accretion and subduction of the Yakutat microplate, the Denali fault and related structures and their role in accommodating permanent deformation of the overriding plate, andregional integration and large-scale models and the use of data from Alaska to address important global questions and hypotheses. The book's publication near the beginning of the National Science Foundation's EarthScope project makes it especially timely because Alaska is perhaps the least understood area within the EarthScope footprint, and interest in the region can be expected to rise with time as more EarthScope data become available.Content:

Adaptive Wireless Transceivers: Turbo-Coded, Turbo-Equalized and Space-Time Coded TDMA, CDMA and OFDM Systems By L. Hanzo, C. H. Wong, M. S. Yee(auth.)
2002 | 734 Pages | ISBN: 0470846895 | PDF | 11 MB
Adaptive Wireless Transceivers provides the reader with a broad overview of near-instantaneously adaptive transceivers in the context of TDMA, CDMA and OFDM systems. The adaptive transceivers examined employ powerful turbo codecs, turbo equalisers and space-time codecs, equipping the reader with a future-proof technological road map. It demonstrates that adaptive transceivers are capable of mitigating the channel quality fluctuations of the wireless channel as a lower-complexity alternative to space-time coding. By contrast, if the higher complexity of multiple transmitters and multiple receiver-assisted systems is deemed acceptable, the advantages of adaptability erode. Provides an in-depth introduction to channel equalisers and Kalman filtering and discusses the associated complexity versus performance trade-offs Introduces wideband near-instantaneously adaptive transceivers and studies their performance both with and without turbo channel coding Describes how to optimise adaptive modulation mode switching and highlights a range of practical considerations Introduces neural network based channel equalisers and discusses Radial Basis Function (RBF) assisted equalisers embedded into adaptive modems supported by turbo channel coding and turbo channel equalisation Employs the above adaptive principles also in the context of CDMA and OFDM transceivers and discusses the pros and cons of space-time coding versus adaptive modulation Researchers, advanced students and practising development engineers working in wireless communications will all find this valuable text an informative read.Content: Chapter 1 Prologue (pages 1-17): Chapter 2 Introduction To Equalizers (pages 19-44): Chapter 3 Adaptive Equalization (pages 45-79): Chapter 4 Adaptive Modulation (pages 81-122): Chapter 5 Turbo-Coded and Turbo-Equalised Wideband Adaptive Modulation (pages 123-190): Chapter 6 Adaptive Modulation Mode Switching Optimization (pages 191-255): B. Adjudication in Construction Contracts By John Redmond(auth.)
2001 | 270 Pages | ISBN: 0632056517 | PDF | 9 MB
Adjudication was introduced in construction contracts as a requirement of the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act in 1998 to tackle the large number of disputes which dog most projects. Provisions for adjudication are now included in all standard construction forms and are implied into all construction contracts that do not expressly include them. When adjudication was first launched there were enormous uncertainties about how it would work in practice, and books published to coincide with the launch could only speculate on this. This new guide, written by a construction lawyer and experienced adjudicator, is the first to explain how adjudication is actually working in practice. It covers all the major court decisions which have clarified enforcement, adjudicator errors and problems such as definition of construction contracts, jurisdiction, insolvency, natural justice and human rights. It also deals with the complex requirements of the legislation regarding payment terms. This will provide a highly readable, but authoritative guide for all involved in adjudications, whether contracts directors, construction consultants, lawyers or adjudicators.Content: Chapter One Introduction (pages 1-15): Chapter Two Construction Contracts and Construction Operations (pages 16-38): Chapter Three The Statutory Right to Refer Disputes to Adjudication (pages 39-56): Chapter Four Starting Adjudication (pages 57-82): Chapter Five Preliminary Matters ? The Referral Notice and Jurisdiction (pages 83-100): Chapter Six Conduct of the Adjudication (pages 101-126): Chapter Seven The Adjudicator's Decision (pages 127-157): Chapter Eight Costs (pages 158-173): Chapter Nine Enforcement (pages 174-204): Chapter Ten Payment (pages 205-231):
