Litigating for the Environment: EU Law, National Courts, and Socio-Legal Reality By Reinhard Slepcevic (auth.)
2010 | 244 Pages | ISBN: 3531168428 | PDF | 2 MB
The Natura 2000 Directives are the very cornerstone of European Union nature conservation policy which create a considerably stricter environmental protection regime than national laws do. The member states, however, have failed to implement the Directives even despite strong pressure from the European Commission. Reinhard Slepcevic shows how French, German, and Dutch environmental organisations try to enforce the Directives through national courts, though with varied success. The author explains the situation by arguing that it will only be possible to enforce EU law effectively through litigation under particular conditions. The consequences, not only for private judicial law enforcement but also for European integration and democratic governance, are significant. This book is essential reading for researchers and students from the social sciences, in particular sociology and political science, as well as for practitioners in the field of environmental protection.

Living Intersections: Transnational Migrant Identifications in Asia By Caroline Plüss, Chan Kwok-bun (auth.), Caroline Plüss, Kwok-bun Chan (eds.)
2012 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 9400729650 | PDF | 2 MB
This book presents ground-breaking theoretical, and empirical knowledge to produce a fine-grained and encompassing understanding of the costs and benefits that different groups of Asian migrants, moving between different countries in Asia and in the West, experience. The contributors-all specialist scholars in anthropology, geography, history, political science, social psychology, and sociology-present new approaches to intersectionality analysis, focusing on the migrants' performance of their identities as the core indicator to unravel the mutual constituitivity of cultural, social, political, and economic characteristics rooted in different places, which characterizes transnational lifestyles. The book answers one key question: What happens to people, communities, and societies under globalization, which is, among others, characterized by increasing cultural disidentification?

The book applies the age-period-cohort (APC) approach and constructs cross-classified random-effects models (CCREMs) to carry out the analyses.

Dale S. Wright, "Living Skillfully: Buddhist Philosophy of Life from the Vimalakirti Sutra"
English | ISBN: 0197587356 | 2021 | 176 pages | EPUB | 1251 KB
This book offers a contemporary philosophy of life drawing upon Buddhist resources from the Vimalakirti Sutra. Among the major themes in this Mahayana Buddhist scripture is the "skillful means" required to live a healthy and undeluded life. The book adopts that theme as a means of developing a practical approach to contemporary Buddhist life. Following many of the brilliant stories in the sutra, this book attempts to provide clear explanations for the primary Buddhist teachings and the relationships that bind them all together into an inspiring way of living. Among the questions addressed are: who is the Buddha, how is a worldview of change and contingency applicable to current life, what does it mean to claim that there is no permanent self, what are the primary characteristics of an admirable Buddhist life, how is freedom conceived in Buddhism, and how do all of these themes help us address issues that are pressing for us today. Although historical questions do arise in the book, its primary purpose is contemporary and practical, an effort to say clearly how this text helps us stake out a way of living for contemporary, global citizens.

Living with Hitler: Compelling recollections of Hitler's Personal Staff by Karl Wilhelm Krause Kuch
English | November 19, 2020 | ISBN: 036934877X | 460 pages | PDF | 15 Mb
This collection paints a picture of Hitler from members of his household in the unique position of being "seemingly ever-present, yet totally unconnected to events." Compelling recollections from Hitler's Bodyguard Karl Krause (1934-39), his house administrator Herbert Döhring (1935-43) and chambermaid Anna Plaim (1941-43). From these accounts we get a deeper sense of Hitler in close proximity. These accounts massively add to our understanding of Hitler as a three dimensional character, especially from subjects like Plaim who only knew Hitler's home life, having rarely left Berghof. The authors shed light on his likes and dislikes from foods to his hobbies, creating a strange sense of humanity. This collection also provides fresh anecdotes, observations and portraits of Hitler's entourage and relatives. Plaim's images of Eva Braun came from finding torn fragments in the bin, whilst Döhring sheds light on Martin Bormann's demeanour.

Gaynor Johnson, "Locating the Transatlantic in Twentieth-century Politics, Diplomacy and Culture"
English | ISBN: 135022782X | 2024 | 266 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Written in tribute to the work of Professor Alan Dobson, this collection of essays brings diplomacy and the Anglo-American relationship together, considering politics and foreign policy in tandem with cultural interactions. Uniquely placed to define exactly what transatlanticism is, and to explore the ways in which this idea has evolved in the last 150 years, this book asks to what extent can it be argued that there was a transatlantic world, how can it be defined and what was unique about it?

With contributions from leading scholars it offers an overview of the field as well as a comparative exploration of Anglo-American relations. From emotion in foreign policy decision making, to the RAF in the Vietnam War, as well as leader personalities and transatlantic reactions to women's rights in China,

The Hubble Space telescope is included and it was as yet unlaunched when the book came out. Other interesting content includes Lockheed's series of submarine-launched ballistic missiles. E P Bos, "Logica Modernorum in Prague about 1400: The Sophistria Disputation 'Quoniam Quatuor'"
English | 2004 | pages: 503 | ISBN: 9004140093 | PDF | 2,6 mb
An anonymous tract is preserved in Cracow, "Jagiellonian Library" 686, ff. 1ra - 79rb. The tract is a specimen of the art of "sophistria," It is intended to help students avoid problems concerning fallacies and ambiguities of words. The tract originates from Prague. It was written around 1400. The manuscript was brought to Cracow. The "contents" are primarily the logical and semantic topics also found in textbooks by Peter of Spain, Marsilius of Inghen, Thomas Manlevelt, Thomas of Cleves and Richard Billingham. The main topics are: "sophistria" as a science; signification; syncategorematic terms; supposition; ampliation, restriction; complex signifiables, the significate of a proposition; mediate and immediate, resolvable, exponible and functionalizable terms; propositions with a term in the comparative or superlative form; exceptive, exclusive and reduplicative propositions. Apart from the presentation of sometimes original views, one of the results of this edition is the partial reconstruction of the "Logica" by a master "Thomas of Cleves," This "Logica" has not been preserved elsewhere. Our "sophistria" is also worth study as a testimony of the use made around 1400 of the works of Richard Billingham who wrote an influential "Speculum puerorum," Billingham is especially interested to test propositions by individual things in reality. This logical handbook was a kind of successor and alternative to Peter of Spain's "Tractatus,"

Logical Foundations Of Computer Science (In 2 Volumes)
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9811289360 | 1336 Pages | PDF (True) | 16 MB
Logic is a foundational mathematical discipline for Computer Science. This unique compendium provides the main ideas and techniques originating from logic. It is divided into two volumes ― propositional logic and predicate logic. The volume presents some of the most important concepts starting with a variety of logic formalisms ― Hilbert/Frege systems, tableaux, sequents, and natural deduction in both propositional and first-order logic, as well as transformations between these formalisms. Topics like circuit design, resolution, cutting planes, Hintikka sets, paramodulation, and program verification, which do not appear frequently in logic books are discussed in detail. The useful reference text has close to 800 exercises and supplements to deepen understanding of the subject. It emphasizes proofs and overcomes technical difficulties by providing detailed arguments. Computer scientists and mathematicians will benefit from this volume.

Logics of Socialist Education: Engaging with Crisis, Insecurity and Uncertainty By Tom G. Griffiths, Zsuzsa Millei (auth.), Tom G. Griffiths, Zsuzsa Millei (eds.)
2013 | 212 Pages | ISBN: 9400747276 | PDF | 2 MB
For some, socialism is a potent way of achieving economic, political and social transformations in the twenty-first century, while others find the very term socialism outdated. This book engages readers in a discussion about the viability of socialist views on education and identifies the capacity of some socialist ideas to address a range of widely recognized social ills. It argues that these pervasive social problems, which plague so-called 'developed' societies as much as they contribute to the poverty, humiliation and lack of prospects in the rest of the world, fundamentally challenge us to act. In our contemporary world-system, distancing ourselves from the injustices of others is neither viable nor defensible. Rather than waiting for radically new solutions to emerge, this book sees the possibility of transformation in the reconfiguration of existing social logics that comprise our modern societies, including logics of socialism. The book presents case studies that offer a critical examination of education in contemporary socialist contexts, as well as reconsidering examples of education under historical socialism. In charting these alternatives, and retooling past solutions in a nuanced way, it sets out compelling evidence that it is possible to think and act in ways that depart from today's dominant educational paradigm. It offers contemporary policy makers, researchers, and practitioners a cogent demonstration of the contemporary utility of educational ideas and solutions associated with socialism.A pioneering collection of essays which is central to understanding the historical and contemporary meanings of socialism in the context of neoliberal globalization. It is a most timely contribution to a growing intellectual project that challenges the hegemony of capitalism, while re-thinking and theorizing alternatives. Iveta Silova, Associate Professor of Comparative Education, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, USAIn this significant contribution to recent scholarship the authors use the lens of socialist education to offer an original critique of hegemonic capitalism, and present an intellectually rigorous search for alternatives by reconsidering historical socialism and advancing promising educational experiments that challenge the 'global architecture of education'.Anders Breidlid, Professor of International Education and Development, Oslo University College, Norway

Paul Knox, "London: A History of 300 Years in 25 Buildings"
English | ISBN: 030026920X | 2024 | 448 pages | EPUB | 26 MB
A lively new history of London told through twenty-five buildings, from iconic Georgian townhouses to the Shard

A walk along any London street takes you past a wealth of seemingly ordinary buildings: an Edwardian church, modernist postwar council housing, stuccoed Italianate terraces, a Bauhaus-inspired library. But these buildings are not just functional. They are evidence of London's rich and diverse history and have shaped people's experiences, identities, and relationships.
In this engaging study, Paul L. Knox traces the history of London from the Georgian era to the present day through twenty-five surviving buildings. Knox explores where people lived and worked, from grand Regency squares to Victorian workshops, and highlights the impact of migration, gentrification, and inequality. We see famous buildings, like Harrods and Abbey Road Studios, and everyday places like Rochelle Street School and Thamesmead.
Each historical period has introduced new buildings, and old ones have been repurposed. As Knox shows, it is the living history of these buildings that makes up the vibrant, but exceptionally unequal, city of today.
