During the Second World War, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were occupied on three separate occasions - twice by the Soviet Union and once by Nazi Germany. The signing of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact of 1939 allowed the Soviets to dominate the Baltic states without fear of German reprisals, causing many in the German-Baltic populations to flee to Poland.
Soviet rule of the Baltics was brutal with the purging of political elites and deportation of many tens of thousands in a bid to turn them into vassal states. Consequently, when Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, many Balts saw it as a liberation from Soviet cruelties. The reality was, however, that it turned out to be the beginning of something much worse.
During their occupation of Poland prior to Barbarossa the Nazis had decimated the Polish political elites, and the Jews there had been herded into ghettos in preparation for deportation to the east where they would serve as slave labour in the Nazi economy after the conquest of the Soviet Union. Similar policies were to be adopted in the Baltics when Heinrich Himmler's murder squads, the Einsatzgruppen, were allowed to move into the newly-occupied territories.
Operating behind the advancing German forces Einsatzgruppen A, B, C, and D - four special mobile killing units, each made up of about a thousand men from the security police and the German intelligence service - proved to be more than willing to carry out Himmler's orders. He had called for the removal of every vestige of opposition to Nazi rule, which primarily meant complete elimination of the 'inferior' races who were unfit for work and the ghettoization of others in preparation for their economic exploitation.
On foreign soil, away from scrutiny and free of all constraint, the Einsatzgruppen discovered that through the mass shootings of communists, Jews and gypsies it was possible to accelerate the pace of the Holocaust, slaughtering men, women and children in their tens of thousands. The Einsatzgruppen were assisted by local 'volunteers' who helped to identify victims as well as kill them; in places whole Jewish communities were swiftly eliminated. Many of the killers and victims had known one another as neighbors and colleagues.
This massive slaughter of civilians convinced Heydrich and Himmler that complete extermination of Jews was within their grasp and before very long, in the death camps, new industrial methods of killing would be devised.

The Kingdom of Israel: The History of the United Jewish Kingdom and Its Demise by Charles River Editors

Before any type of unified political entity named Israel existed, the Jewish groups whose descendants would later form Israel identified themselves by their particular tribe. If asked their nationality or country of origin, they would likely identify themselves as Danites (from the tribe of Dan; Ex. 31:6) or Ephraimites (from the tribe of Ephraim; Judg. 12:5), etc. The main way to differentiate these tribes from other tribes in Canaan was their common worship of the deity YHWH, but in terms of language or other cultural characteristics, it would have been difficult to tell a Canaanite from an Israelite.
Eventually, these separate tribes united together as a type of confederation, allies who made a treaty (covenant) to provide military aid for one another when threatened by an enemy state. But it was only under the charismatic leadership of David that the 12 tribes united into a single political entity. Scholars refer to the period encompassing the reign of David and his son Solomon as the United Monarchy. This period, spanning only two generations, was the only time when all of the tribes were politically united, and after a contentious schism that resulted because the northern tribes felt exploited by the Judean kings, the northern tribes seceded from the "United Kingdom" and reverted back to the ancient northern versus southern division of the tribes. The main difference this time was that the southern kingdom now incorporated the tribe of Benjamin, located at the border between these two new nations, within its political borders. The tribe of Simeon (south of Judah) had already ceased to maintain a separate existence (see below). The new northern kingdom adopted the name Israel, while the southern kingdom took their regional name of Judah.
The newly separated kingdoms engaged in several border disputes and skirmishes to delineate where along the northern outskirts of the territory of Benjamin the border would stand, but for the most part they remained on fairly good terms politically and even formed royal marriage alliances occasionally. Nevertheless, from that point on, the two kingdoms went their separate ways and developed separate political, economic, and religious systems.
Of course, despite its short lifespan, the United Kingdom of Israel existed for less than 500 years, but it left a legacy that reverberates throughout the world today. The Israelites developed a religion that would influence three of the world's monotheist religions - Christianity, Islam, and Judaism - and their governments and armies would play a major role in the geopolitics of the Iron Age in the ancient Near East. The Old Testament of the Bible provides the chronological outline to examine the history of the kingdom of Israel, but historiographical and archaeological sources from throughout the Near East corroborate many of those accounts and add details and context to the overall picture. The picture that emerges of the kingdom of Israel is often more complex than most expect.
However, as important as the kingdom of Israel was for several hundred years, its lifespan was limited by its size, which was determined by its location. The Israelites were located among several different peoples, many of whom were closely related, constantly struggled with them to acquire more land, and fought to keep what they had. Eventually, larger and more powerful kingdoms - such as Egypt, Assyria, and Babylon - were too much for the Israelites to resist, as their armies were too large, and the geopolitical games the Israelites once successfully used were eventually used against them. The kingdom of Israel divided itself into two kingdoms, which made it even easier for outside forces to conquer, and the end came rather abruptly.

In their four years in the world of publishing, Nicolas and Mehdi published more than twenty works on major video game series, and wrote several of those works themselves: Metal Gear Solid. Hideo Kojima's Magnum Opus, Resident Evil Of Zombies and Men, and The Legend of Final Fantasy VII and IX. Since 2015, they have continued their editorial focus on analyzing major video game series at a new publishing house that they founded together: Third.Grégoire Hellot is a French freelance journalist who specializes in video games. He began his career in the field more than twenty years ago when he joined Joypad magazine. As a pioneer dealing in Japanese video games, he has contributed to the French public's acceptance of these unique titles. Today, he contributes to the Gamekult website and is also the Managing Director of Kurokawa Editions, created in 2005 by the publishing house Univers Poche.
