Narrating Violence in Post-9/11 Action Cinema: Terrorist Narratives, Cinematic Narration, and Referentiality By Berenike Jung (auth.)
2010 | 130 Pages | ISBN: 3531175106 | PDF | 1 MB
This work discusses the way in which action movies have responded to the visual and narrative challenge of depicting terrorist violence after 9/11, when the spectacular representation of terrorist violence - and by extension the consumers of these imagers - was considered as complicit behaviour. If terrorism is theatre, who goes to see the show? A close-reading of exemplary movies (V for Vendetta, Munich, and Children of Men) concentrates on three key aspects: How is terrorist violence justified, especially in comparison to other forms of violence? How is the audience implicitly positioned? And finally, what is the role and scope of the films' visual short-cuts, iconic "real" images such as those from the Abu Ghraib prison? The results reaffirm popular movies' power of working through traumatic events as well as their capacity to articulate a valid political critique. Instead of inventing or preceding real acts of violence, cinema can document, witness, and encourage the spectator to explore unorthodox viewing positions and moral dilemma. This interdisciplinary work is addressed to students of Philosophy, the Humanities, Cinema, American, or Cultural Studies as well as to the interested public.

Lei Yang, "Narrative Devices in the Shiji: Retelling the Past "
English | ISBN: 1438497210 | 2024 | 200 pages | EPUB, PDF | 570 KB + 2 MB
Narrative Devices in the Shiji: Retelling the Past offers the first systematic analysis of narratives in early Chinese historical writings from 400 BCE to 100 CE, with a focus on the Shiji (Records of the Historian), a vast collection of historical accounts completed by Sima Qian (145-86 BCE). For centuries, the dominant approach to the Shiji has been to infer Sima's intentions from his biographical experiences and subsequently project them back into the text. This has caused the import of the work to be overshadowed by Sima's tragedy of castration, and has minimized the question of how narrative as a form affects the text's interpretation. Lei Yang fills the gap by exploring how Sima manipulated the Shiji's narrative structure to represent the past. Drawing on Gérard Genette's narratological theories, the book examines how sequences of events build causality, what is slowed down and sped up to manage information control, and how the text provides multiple perspectives on the same events. Redefining the

Narrative Means to Journalistic Ends: A Narratological Analysis of Selected Journalistic Reportages By Nora Berning (auth.)
2011 | 158 Pages | ISBN: 3531179101 | PDF | 2 MB
Nora Berning grasps the narrative potential of journalistic reportages via a set of narratological categories. Spurred by an interdisciplinary framework, she builds on transgeneric narratological research and shows that journalistic reportages can be described, analyzed, and charted with categories that originate in structuralist narratology. The author spells out minimal criteria for particular types of reportages, and challenges the argument that journalism and literature have distinct, non-overlapping communicative goals. By showing that the reportage is a hybrid text type that seeks to inform, educate, and entertain, this study advances a re-conceptualization of journalism and literature as two fields with permeable borders. The book is written for researchers and students in the fields of journalism, media, communications, and literary theory.

Natural compounds as inducers of cell death: volume 1 By Asser Ghoneim Ph.D. (auth.), Marc Diederich, Karoline Noworyta (eds.)
2012 | 518 Pages | ISBN: 9400745745 | PDF | 8 MB
Cancer still remains a most important killer and even though synthetic chemotherapeutic agents are currently used, they are cost-intensive and do not always meet the expectations. In parallel, there is increasing evidence for the potential of nature-derived compounds on the inhibition of different steps of cancer initiation, promotion and progression.We believe that all diseases can be found in Nature but that Nature also provides the efficient cures as said the Prophet of Allah: "Allah did not create any illness without also creating the remedy".The content of this book gives a multi-disciplinary approach into the anti-cancer research field related to natural products and dietary compounds. Mainly, it covers the area of antitumor activity through an in-depth description of the cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties in cancer, inflammatory and cardio-vascular diseases. The cell death inducing mechanisms (apoptosis, anti-proliferative activity, angiogenesis, cell cycle control, cytostatic property and autophagy) give an overview of how natural products are able to target cancer cells.We believe that all diseases can be found in Nature but that Nature also provides the efficient cures as said the Prophet of Allah: "Allah did not create any illness without also creating the remedy".The content of this book gives a multi-disciplinary approach into the anti-cancer research field related to natural products and dietary compounds. Nature, Culture, and Inequality: A Comparative and Historical Perspective by Thomas Piketty
English | September 10th, 2024 | ISBN: 1635424569 | 96 pages | True EPUB | 4.21 MB
"The most important economics book of the year―and maybe of the decade." -Paul Krugman, New York Times, on Capital in the Twenty-First Century

A bestselling economist's history of inequality and guide to a more just, sustainable world, distilled into an engaging and accessible pocket-sized text.
In this unique work, Thomas Piketty presents a synthesis of his historical and comparative research on inequality. He challenges the idea that there could be natural inequalities and shows that the march toward equality has always depended on political and social struggles, addressing diverse topics such as:
* education,
* inheritance,
* the climate crisis,
* the taxation of wealth, and
* gender disparities.
Adapted from Piketty's 2022 lecture at the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, Nature, Culture, and Inequality makes his important argument available to a wider audience for the first time. With a clear, conversational tone, he provides a strong foundation of data and concrete examples of how we can continue to level the playing field.

P.M.H. Atwater, "Near-Death Experiences, The Rest of the Story: What They Teach Us About Living and Dying and Our True Purpose"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 157174651X | EPUB | pages: 290 | 1.3 mb
Real-life stories of out-of-body experiences, encountering a special light, greeters from the afterlife, life reviews, tunnels, and 360-degree vision-are all part of this intriguing look at near-death experiences (NDEs) by one of the world's noted authorities, P.M.H. Atwater. Atwater shares her amazing findings, based on her sessions with more than 4,000 adults and children, and over 40 years of research; a breathtaking culmination to a successful and controversial career.

Atwater examines every aspect of the near-death phenomenon: from first-hand accounts of survivors experiencing flash forwards, waking up in morgues, and developing psychic abilities, to stunning cases of groups experiencing NDEs together. Atwater offers statistics from her findings to show the distinctive common patterns that people experience, as well as the common aftereffects and how it changed their lives.
She also explores the physiological and spiritual changes that result from near-death experiences and looks at the connections between the NDE experience and what is often called "enlightenment." Near Death Experiences provides a glimpse of not only what lies beyond the veil of our temporal existence, but points to what-or who-we really are and what we are meant to be.

Constance Brittain Bouchard, "Negotiation and Resistance: Peasant Agency in High Medieval France"
English | ISBN: 1501766589 | 2022 | 186 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
In Negotiation and Resistance, Constance Brittain Bouchard challenges familiar depictions of the peasantry as an undifferentiated mass of impoverished and powerless workers. Peasants in eleventh- and twelfth-century France had far more scope for action, self-determination, and resistance to oppressive treatment―that is, for agency―than they are usually credited with having. Through innovative readings of documents collected in medieval cartularies, Bouchard finds that while peasants lived hard, impoverished lives, they were able to negotiate, individually or collectively, to better their position, present cases in court, and make their own decisions about such fundamental issues as inheritance or choice of marriage partner. Negotiation and Resistance upends the received view of this period in French history as one in which lords dealt harshly and without opposition toward subservient peasants, offering numerous examples of peasants standing up for themselves.

Fotini Vaki, "Neoliberalism, Democracy, and Rights: Towards a Critique of Neoliberal Reason "
English | ISBN: 3031614666 | 2024 | 132 pages | EPUB, PDF | 395 KB + 3 MB
The book sheds light on the forms of neoliberalism's political rationality by highlighting the theoretical foundations upon which they are built. It relies on Foucault's account of neoliberal reason in terms of a governmental rationality encompassing all aspects of human life, as well as Critical Theory's methodology.

The book discloses the tensions and antinomies between the concepts neoliberalism resorts to for its own moral and theoretical justification and the historical forms of its realization. By combining the rigor of the normative principles of political philosophy with contemporary historical material, the book shows how neoliberalism realizes itself by negating liberty in its own name, undermining democracy, and annulling rights via their transformation into the morals of the new global market. The core argument permeating the book is that crises are the very condition of neoliberalism's existence. It states that, paradoxically enough, neoliberalism is facing the crises it itself produces by touching off new ones.

Networked Flow: Towards an Understanding of Creative Networks By Andrea Gaggioli, Giuseppe Riva, Luca Milani, Elvis Mazzoni (auth.)
2013 | 117 Pages | ISBN: 9400755511 | PDF | 2 MB
Identifying 'networked flow' as the key driver of networked creativity, this new volume in the Springer Briefs series deploys concepts from a range of sub-disciplines in psychology to suggest ways of optimizing the innovative potential of creative networks. In their analysis of how to support these networks, the contributing authors apply expertise in experimental, social, cultural and educational psychology. They show how developing a creative network requires the establishment of an optimal group experience in which individual intentions inform and guide collective goals.The volume represents a three-fold achievement. It develops a ground-breaking new perspective on group creativity: the notion of 'networked flow' as a bridging concept linking the neuropsychological, psychological and social levels of the creative process. In addition, the authors set out a six-stage model that provides researchers with a methodological framework (also by referring to the social network analysis) for studying the creativity traditionally associated with interpersonal contexts. Finally, the book includes perceptive analysis of the novel possibilities opened up by second-generation internet technologies, particularly in social networking, that seem destined to develop and sustain online creativity. As a wide-ranging exposition of a new direction in theoretical psychology that is laden with exciting possibilities, this volume will inform and inspire professionals, scholars and students alike.

The proteinopathy sporadic Parkinson's disease (sPD) is the second most frequent degenerative disorder of the human nervous system after Alzheimer's disease. The a -synuclein inclusion body pathology (Lewy pathology) associated with sPD is distributed throughout the central, peripheral, and enteric nervous systems. The resulting nonrandom neuronal dysfunction and, in some regions, neuronal loss is reflected by a distinctive topographic distribution pattern of the Lewy pathology that, in the brain, has been staged. Except for olfactory structures and spinal cord constituents of the pain system, sensory components of the nervous system remain uninvolved or virtually intact. The most disease-related damage revolves around motor areas - particularly around superordinate centers of the limbic and visceromotor systems as well as portions of the somatomotor system. Vulnerable regions are interconnected anatomically and susceptible nerve cell types are not neurotransmitter-dependent. Not all clinical symptoms emerging in the course of sPD can be explained by a lack of dopamine in the nigrostriatal system. These include autonomic dysfunction, pain, hyp- or anosmia, excessive daytime sleepiness, REM sleep behavioral disorder, depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, and dementia. Against the background of the normal morphology and anatomy, the authors analyze the pathoanatomy of sPD in the nervous system at various neuropathological stages and summarize the potential functional consequences of the lesions.

Neutrality and Theory of Law By Juan Carlos Bayón (auth.), Jordi Ferrer Beltrán, José Juan Moreso, Diego M. Papayannis (eds.)
2013 | 273 Pages | ISBN: 9400760663 | PDF | 3 MB
This book brings together twelve of the most important legal philosophers in the Anglo-American and Civil Law traditions. The book is a collection of the papers these philosophers presented at the Conference on Neutrality and Theory of Law, held at the University of Girona, in May 2010. The central question that the conference and this collection seek to answer is: Can a theory of law be neutral? The book covers most of the main jurisprudential debates. It presents an overall discussion of the connection between law and morals, and the possibility of determining the content of law without appealing to any normative argument. It examines the type of project currently being held by jurisprudential scholarship. It studies the different approaches to theorizing about the nature or concept of law, the role of conceptual analysis and the essential features of law. Moreover, it sheds some light on what can be learned from studying the non-essential features of law. Finally, it analyzes the nature of legal statements and their truth values. This book takes the reader a step further to understanding law.
