The present monograph consists of two parts. Before Part I, a chapter of introduction is supplemented, where an overview of the whole volume is given for reader's convenience. The former part is devoted mainly to expose linear inte gral operators introduced by the author. Several properties of the operators are established, and specializations as well as generalizations are attempted variously in order to make use them in the latter part. As compared with the former part, the latter part is de voted mainly to develop several kinds of distortions under actions of integral operators for various familiar function also absolute modulus. real part. range. length and area. an gular derivative, etc. Besides them, distortions on the class of univalent functions and its subclasses, Caratheodory class as well as distortions by a differential operator are dealt with. Related differential operators play also active roles. Many illustrative examples will be inserted in order to help understanding of the general statements. The basic materials in this monograph are taken from a series of researches performed by the author himself chiefly in the past two decades. While the themes of the papers pub lished hitherto are necessarily not arranged chronologically Preface viii and systematically, the author makes here an effort to ar range them as ,orderly as possible. In attaching the import ance of the self-containedness to the book, some of unfamil iar subjects will also be inserted and, moreover, be wholly accompanied by their respective proofs, though unrelated they may be.

Mountainous Liangshan Prefecture, on the southern border of Sichuan Province, is one of China's most remote regions. Although Liangshan's majority ethnic group, the Nuosu (now classified by the Chinese government as part of the Yi ethnic group) practiced a subsistence economy and were, by Chinese standards, extremely poor. Their traditional society was stratified into endogamous castes, the most powerful of which owned slaves. With the incorporation of Liangshan into China's new socialist society in the mid-twentieth century, the Nuosu were required to abolish slavery and what the Chinese government considered to be superstitious religious practices. When Han Chinese moved into the area, competing with Nuosu for limited resources and introducing new cultural and economic challenges, some Nuosu took advantage of China's new economic policies in the 1980s to begin private businesses.
In Doing Business in Rural China, Thomas Heberer tells the stories of individual entrepreneurs and presents a wealth of economic data gleaned from extensive fieldwork in Liangshan. He documents and analyzes the phenomenal growth during the last two decades of Nuosu-run businesses, comparing these with Han-run businesses and asking how ethnicity affects the new market-oriented economic structure and how economics in turn affects Nuosu culture and society. He finds that Nuosu entrepreneurs have effected significant change in local economic structures and social institutions and have financed major social and economic development projects. This economic development has prompted Nuosu entrepreneurs to establish business, political, and social relationships beyond the traditional social confines of the clan, while also fostering awareness and celebration of ethnicity.

The dominance of US multinational businesses today can seem at first like an inevitable byproduct of the nation's superpower status. In Dollars and Dominion, Mary Bridges tells a different origin story. She explores the ramshackle beginnings of US financial power overseas, showing that US bankers in the early twentieth century depended on the US government, European know-how, and last-minute improvisation to sustain their work abroad. Bridges focuses on an underappreciated piece of the nation's financial infrastructure-the overseas branch bank-as a brick-and-mortar foundation for expanding US commercial influence.
Bridges explores how bankers sorted their new communities into "us"-potential clients-and "them"-local populations, who often existed on the periphery of the banking world. She argues that US bankers mapped their new communities by creating foreign credit information-and by using a financial asset newly enabled by the Federal Reserve System, the bankers' acceptance, in the process. In doing so, they constructed a new architecture of US trade finance that relied on long-standing inequalities and hierarchies of privilege. Thus, racialized, class-based, and gendered ideas became baked into the financial infrastructure.
Contrary to conventional wisdom, there was nothing inevitable or natural about the rise of US finance capitalism. Bridges shows that US foreign banking was a bootstrapped project that began as a side hustle of Gilded Age tycoons and sustained itself by relying on the power of the US state, copying the example of British foreign bankers, and building alliances with local elites. In this way, US bankers constructed a flexible and durable new infrastructure to support the nation's growing global power.
