In many ways, this book is the culmination of more than four decades of my exp- ration of the taxonomy, biogeography and ecology of New Zealand's quite small freshwater fish fauna. I began this firstly as a fisheries ecologist with the New Zealand Marine Department (then responsible for the nation's fisheries research and mana- ment), and then with my PhD at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA in the early-mid 1960s. Since then, employed by a series of agencies that have successively been assigned a role in fisheries research in New Zealand, I have been able to explore very widely the natural history of that fauna. Studies of the fishes of other warm to cold temperate southern lands have followed, particularly southern Australia, New Caledonia, Patagonian South America, the Falkland Islands, and South Africa and, in many ways, have provided the rather broader context within which the New Zealand fauna is embedded in terms of geography, phylogeny, and evolutionary history, and knowing this context makes the patterns within New Zealand all the clearer. An additional stream in these studies, in substantial measure driven by the beh- ioural ecology of these fishes round the Southern Hemisphere, has been exploration of the role of diadromy (regular migrations between marine and freshwater biomes) in fisheries ecology and biogeography, and eventually of diadromous fishes wor- wide.

Functional foods, also known as nutraceuticals, began to gain prominence in the 1980s in Japan as "foods for specified health use" and became more widely recognized in the 1990s as research and interest in foods that could provide specific health benefits beyond essential nutrition grew worldwide. These foods are typically enriched with bioactive components or formulated to contain substances or live microorganisms with a possible health-enhancing or disease-preventing value and at a safe and sufficiently high concentration to achieve the intended benefit.
Usually, the added ingredients are classified as nutrients, dietary fiber, phytochemicals, other substances, or probiotics. The production, storage, and consumer consumption of these functional foods require special attention to preserve quality attributes. The production process of these foods can be classified as conventionally used thermal processing methods and non-thermal alternatives. In addition, these processes may be combined with biological approaches involving enzymatic treatment and fermentation. The various non-thermal processes, such as ultrasounds, high-hydrostatic pressure, vacuum impregnation, high-voltage electrical discharge, cold plasma, pulsed light, ozonation, etc., can be utilized for a product to sustain/preserve quality attributes of the ingredients, long shelf life, and sensory qualities.
This book compiles the latest non-thermal processing technologies to develop functional foods. The book discusses bioactivity, bioaccessibility, and bioavailability related to nutrition and functional food ingredients. It has 16 articles on different aspects of non-thermal processing technologies. Chapter 1 has discussed a general overview of emerging technologies, and various non-thermal processing techniques are discussed in Chapters 2-6, 8-9, and 12. Chapters 7, 11, 13, 15, and 16 discuss food safety and preservation. We have discussed the functional foods and bioactive compounds in Chapters 10 and 14.
A few of these reviews discuss the impact of developing non-thermal technologies on several food components (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, minerals, vitamins, polyphenols, glucosinolates, fragrance compounds, and enzymes) while maintaining the structure and functional properties.

This book is based on lectures delivered at Harvard in the Spring of 1991 and at the University of Utah during the academic year 1992-93. This is one more book on these properties. This book is devoted to the study of some classical problems of the spectral theory of elliptic differential equations. The reader will find hardly any intersections with the books of Shubin [Sh] or Rempel-Schulze [ReSch] or with the works cited there. This book also has no general information in common with the books by Egorov and Shubin [EgShu], which also deal with spectral properties of elliptic operators. There is nothing here on oblique derivative problems; the reader will meet no pseudodifferential operators. The main subject of the book is the estimates of eigenvalues, especially of the first one, and of eigenfunctions of elliptic operators. The considered problems have in common the approach consisting of the application of the variational principle and some a priori estimates, usually in Sobolev spaces. In many cases, impor tant for physics and mechanics, as well as for geometry and analysis, this rather elementary approach allows one to obtain sharp results.

In this new edition of Open Borders, Teresa Hayter assesses the impact of the increasing severity of border controls since they were first introduced and makes the controversial case for their abolition. Hayter focuses on postwar immigration controls, especially the use of such controls against the peoples of former European colonies and East Europeans, and their effects on asylum seekers. She examines the recent history of European coordination of border controls and the notion of 'Fortress Europe'. Hayter argues that the existence of controls leads to great suffering and abuse of human rights, and that immigration controls are racist and help legitimate racism. She demonstrates that immigration controls have actually had a limited impact on controlling numbers. To illustrate her arguments, she draws on empirical material, especially from Britain in the 1980s and 1990s, relating in particular to the use of detention, arbitrary decision-making and the denial of benefits. She compares British government policies with policies elsewhere in Europe and calls for the free movement of people and the abolition of border controls. The new edition brings this seminal work up to date with a lengthy preface exploring how the practices of the British government over the past few years has continued the process Hayter outlines in the main text - of abusive and irrational border controls and the criminalisation of entire communities. This second edition also updates the bibliography and list of campaigning groups, and ends with a new manifesto for a world without borders, declaring 'no one is illegal!'

This volume is the proceedings of the Workshop on Optimal Design and Control that was held in Blacksburg, Virginia, April 8-9, 1994. The workshop was spon sored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research through the Air Force Center for Optimal Design and Control (CODAC) at Virginia Tech. One of the goals of the work shop was to include laboratory, industrial, and academic researchers so that anal yses, algorithms, implementations, and applications could all be well-represented in the talks; this interdisciplinary nature is reflected in these proceedings. An overriding impression that can be gleaned from the papers in this volume is the complexity of problems addressed by not only those authors engaged in appli cations, but also by those engaged in algorithmic development and even mathemat ical analyses. Thus, in many instances, systematic approaches using fully nonlin ear constraint equations are routinely used to solve control and optimization prob lems, in some cases replacing ad-hoc or empirically based procedures.
