Ines Newman, "Reclaiming Local Democracy: A Progressive Future for Local Government"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1447308913, 1447308905 | EPUB | pages: 208 | 0.5 mb
Austerity has left local government struggling to meet the demands for local services. In this context, this book asks 'what are the fundamental principles that should guide decision-making by local councillors and officers?' It seeks to move the agenda from 'what works?' to 'what should local government do?' and 'how will its policies impact on social justice and local democracy?'. Reclaiming local democracy examines the politics of human need and argues that local government should provide a voice for those that lack power. It avoids the dry, familiar debate about what structures and powers local government should have, instead seeking to energise all concerned to re-engage with a political and ethical approach. Written in a persuasive and accessible way, the book examines how local government can develop active citizens and make a difference to the well-being of those in disadvantaged areas - truly 'reclaiming local democracy'. Combining theory and international practice, it will be relevant for councillors, policy officers and activists in the third sector, as well as academics and students in politics and social policy.

Joanne Wallis, Lia Kent, "Reconceiving Civil Society and Transitional Justice: Lessons From Asia and the Pacific"
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032839481, 036746974X | EPUB | pages: 124 | 0.7 mb
Reconceiving Civil Society and Transitional Justice examines the role of civil society in transitional justice, exploring the forms of civil society that are enabled or disabled by transitional justice processes and the forms of transitional justice activity that are enabled and disabled by civil society actors.

Although civil society organisations play an integral role in the pursuit of transitional justice in conflict-affected societies, the literature lacks a comprehensive conceptualisation of the diversity and complexity of these roles. This reflects the degree to which dominant approaches to transitional justice focus on liberal-legal justice strategies and international human rights norms. In this context, civil society organisations are perceived as intermediaries who are thought to advocate for and support formal, liberal transitional justice processes. The contributions to this volume demonstrate that the reality is more complicated; civil society can - and does - play important roles in enabling formal transitional justice processes, but it can also disrupt them. Informed by detailed fieldwork across Asia and the Pacific Islands, the contributions demonstrate that neither transitional justice or civil society should be treated as taken-for-granted concepts.
Demonstrating that neither transitional justice or civil society should be treated as taken-for-granted concepts, Reconceiving Civil Society and Transitional Justice will be of great interest to scholars of Security Studies, Asian Studies, Peacebuilding, Asia Pacific, Human Rights, Reconciliation and the Politics of Memory. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of Global Change, Peace & Security.

Krushil Watene, Eric Palmer, "Reconciliation, Transitional and Indigenous Justice"
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032839066, 0367442329 | EPUB | pages: 202 | 0.8 mb
Reconciliation, Transitional and Indigenous Justice presents fifteen reflections upon justice twenty years after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa introduced a new paradigm for political reconciliation in settler and post-colonial societies.

The volume considers processes of political reconciliation, appraising the results of South Africa's Commission, of the recently concluded Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and of the on-going process of the Waitangi Tribunal of Aotearoa New Zealand. Contributors discuss the separate politics of Indigenous resurgence, linguistic justice, environmental justice and law. Further contributors present a theoretical symposium focused on The Conceptual Foundations of Transitional Justice, authored by Colleen Murphy, who provides a response to their comments. Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices from four regions of the world are represented in this critical assessment of the prospects for political reconciliation, for transitional justice and for alternative, nascent conceptions of just politics.
Radically challenging assumptions concerning sovereignty and just process in the current context of settler-colonial states, Reconciliation, Transitional and Indigenous Justice will be of great interest to scholars of Ethics, Indigenous Studies, Transitional Justice and International Relations more broadly. With the addition of one chapter from The Round Table, the chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue in the Journal of Global Ethics.

Franziska Smolnik, Andrea Weiss, "Reconfigurations of Political Space in the Caucasus"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 0367729512, 0367236826 | EPUB | pages: 122 | 0.8 mb
In order to analyse configurations of power that transcend the territorial trap, the Caucasus is an excellent case in point. Its past and present exhibit an extraordinary richness in power practices of diverse forms that intersect on various scales. This comprehensive volume offers an innovative procedural perspective on the actual workings of power not necessarily tied to the nation-state. Its focus goes well beyond national scales to tackle the manifold impacts of transboundary flows.

The authors, from a wide range of academic disciplines, provide original empirical data from this intriguing but largely untapped region, with respect to the critical study of statehood. They also shed light on the diversity of political space and the ongoing process of spatial re-alignment. The chapters in this collection focus on: land governance practice in the North Caucasus; practices of local administration in Georgia; Shia influence from Iran in Azerbaijan; and trajectories of Ottoman influence in Adjara and Abkhazia respectively. They cover the South as well as North Caucasus, examining configurations of power that entangle smaller and larger scales, and providing perspectives on transboundary flows between the area and both Turkey and Iran.
This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Eurasian Geography and Economics.

Michael Lowy, "Recorded Fragments: Twelve reflections on the 20th century with Daniel Bensaïd"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 0902869671 | EPUB | pages: 200 | 0.4 mb
Recorded Fragments - Twelve reflections on the 20th century with Daniel Bensaïd

These interviews with Daniel Bensaïd were a project broadcast on the radio station 'Fréquence Paris Plurielle' (106.3 FM).
During recording sessions in 2007 and 2008, Daniel Bensaïd proposed further interviews on twelve events associated with key dates of the workers' movement. In these, he gives his insight into events such as the October Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, the assassination of Lumumba, the 1973 coup in Chile, the fall of the Berlin Wall.
These twelve events - milestones of the 'short twentieth century' - are necessarily a biased and partial choice. In the interviews, one hears, or rather one reads in this book, some of the main analyses that structure Daniel Bensaïd's thinking, but also that of part of the radical left at the very beginning of the 21st century.

Robert K. Schaeffer, "Red Inc.: Dictatorship and the Development of Capitalism in China, 1949 to the Present"
English | 2011 | ISBN: 1594517118, 1594517126 | EPUB | pages: 272 | 1.0 mb
Red Inc. takes issue with the view that economic development will eventually promote democracy. It outlines in detail the enormous social costs of the rapid rise of China's economy. Although many observers argue that Deng Xiaoping introduced capitalism to China in the late 1970s, Schaeffer believes that capitalist development really began during the 1950s under Mao Zedong. But although Mao made relentless efforts to generate the capital needed to finance economic development, his regime failed to promote any real growth. Schaeffer shows that the remarkable rise of its economy in recent years has provided China with new and often corrupt sources of wealth and power that have enabled it to resist democracy. He brings into sharp focus the consequence of the regime's uncompromising approach to capital accumulation.

Niall Stanage, "Redemption Song: Barack Obama, From Hope to Reality"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 1905483716 | EPUB | pages: 272 | 0.3 mb
In little more than four years, Barack Obama rose from political obscurity to become the 44th president of the United States. His election win in November 2008 was a moment of enormous historical magnitude, greeted with an outpouring of emotion in the US and around the world. However, on taking office, Obama was faced with unparalleled challenges as the global economy plunged ever-deeper into crisis and the US struggled with the two wars in which it was enmeshed.

In Redemption Song, Niall Stanage tells the extraordinary tale of Obama's journey from community organizer in Chicago to leader of the free world through exclusive interviews with some of the new president's oldest friends and closest advisors. He explores the then-senator's long and acrimonious tussle with Hillary Clinton, sheds new light on his battle with John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin, and hears from the members of the grassroots movement that carried Obama all the way to the Oval Office. He also provides an intimate account of the first phase of the Obama presidency, reporting from within the White House walls on the new Administration's first tests, triumphs and tribulations.

Harold J. Laski, "Reflections on the Constitution: The House of Commons, The Cabinet, The Civil Service"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1138823007 | EPUB | pages: 222 | 0.2 mb
This work remains of interest to anyone concerned with Britain's political institutions and how they might be reformed. Laski was strongly in favour of utilising Britain's capacity for decisive government to drive through great social reforms. He was still confident that there was a majority will for such change and quite unable to imagine the kind of centralisation that was later to take place in the UK. If Laski is still important it is more for his pluralist view which counsel against such developments, but these lectures are still of interest in showing how a radical reformer could accept and defend established institutions like the House of Commons.

Paul Anderson, "Reforming Law and Economy for a Sustainable Earth: Critical Thought for Turbulent Times"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1138066362, 1138013862 | EPUB | pages: 300 | 0.8 mb
Few concerns preoccupy contemporary progressive thought as much as the issue of how to achieve a sustainable human society. The problems impeding this goal include those of how to arrest induced global environmental change (GEC), persistent disagreements about the contribution of economic activities to GEC and further differences in views on how these activities can be reformed in order to reduce the rate of change and thus to mitigate threats to much life on Earth.

Reforming Law and Economy for a Sustainable Earth aims to help resolve these problems in two ways. Since addressing GEC will require global coordination, the book first clarifies the conditions necessary to achieve this effectively. Paul Anderson explores these conditions with the aid of a sustained analysis of key concepts in influential disciplines, particularly in social and political theory and law, relating to the transition to a sustainable economy. Second, Anderson tackles the problem of how to arrest GEC by incisively evaluating two leading theoretical positions in terms of their capacity to support the conditions required for effective global coordination.
From this basis, the book offers an extensive critique of the idea that global environmental problems can be solved within the framework of global capitalism. It also critically reviews and advances the proposition that global sustainability can be achieved only by changing the capitalist form of organizing the economy.
Enriched by a genuinely interdisciplinary approach, the originality of Reforming Law and Economy for a Sustainable Earth lies in the manner it combines a rigorous analysis of the requirements for global sustainability with decisive conclusions as to what are, and what are not, viable means of fulfilling those requirements. The book advances research on sustainability within key disciplines, among them political theory, law and social science, by offering a timely and insightful statement about the global environmental predicament in the 21st century.

Oliver Hensengerth, "Regionalism in China-Vietnam Relations: Institution-Building in the Greater Mekong Subregion"
English | 2009 | ISBN: 0415551439, 1138858064 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 0.6 mb
This book analyses collaboration in the Greater Mekong Subregion. It explores inter-state cooperation and the role of subnational units (provincial and local governments) and transnational actors (NGOs, firms) in building and maintaining the subregion. It also considers the relationships between actors on the three levels, their influences within the structures of decision-making in the GMS, their policy pronouncements and roles in the GMS.

After exploring the historical background of cooperation in the GMS, the author discusses how far cooperation in the GMS has developed from the mere promotion of the national interest of individual states towards an institution as an independent actor able to influence relationships between its member states instead of only being influenced by them. Hensengerth scrutinises the nature of GMS cooperation and the character and capabilities of the institution of the GMS, exemplified by the bilateral relations between China and Vietnam. Here, the study will combine the analysis of subregionalism and institution-building in the GMS with an analysis of China-Vietnam relations by combining theoretical approaches to regional integration in the form of the regime approach with foreign policy analysis
This book will appeal to academics within international relations, Southeast Asian regional and China or Vietnam country specialists.

Relationships Between Industry and Bank in Germany: A Historical Study of Personnel Connection Built Through Interlocking Directorate and Bank's Advisory Council System by Toshio Yamazaki
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 572 Pages | ISBN : 9819749956 | 14 MB
The objective of this book is to elucidate the characteristics and significance of the relationships between industry and banks in Germany. This is the first book to undertake a historical and comprehensive examination of the personnel connections established through the interlocking directorates and the bank's advisory council system, using cases of Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank, and Commerzbank. This book addresses the mandates of the chairman and vice chairman and the distribution of industrial sectors to which companies belong. It also considers the personnel relations that are built and maintained. The book considers both direct and indirect interlocking directorates comprising the members of top management organs, namely the supervisory board and board of directors. It also examines the personnel networks therein, including those of second- and third-party enterprises, by applying social network analysis. In addition, the book examines the conditions for members of central and regional advisory councils and their top management positions. Furthermore, the functions supported by inter-firm personnel relationships via interlocking directorates and banks' advisory council systems are examined in terms of information symmetry and conflict resolution, and coordination of the interests among enterprises. This book explores the interlocking directorate processes from bank to industry and vice versa, wherein the common recognition of a management issue is promoted through the information flow and media based on personnel connections. The book explains the system by which various conflicting interests among enterprises are resolved through discussion rather than market competition. It also elucidates the industry-bank relationships and their changes in the history of the development of German capitalism and enterprises. Thus, it provides a combined analysis of the structure and function of the personnel connections of large German banks.

Victor B. Howard, "Religion and the Radical Republican Movement, 1860-1870"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0813156157 | EPUB | pages: 312 | 0.4 mb
Kentucky occupied an unusual position with regard to slavery during the Civil War as well as after. Since the state never seceded, the emancipation proclamation did not free the majority of Kentucky's slaves; in fact, Kentucky and Delaware were the only two states where legal slavery still existed when the thirteenth amendment was adopted by Congress. Despite its unique position, no historian before has attempted to tell the experience of blacks in the Commonwealth during the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Victor B. Howard's Black Liberation in Kentucky fills this void in the history of slavery and emancipation. In doing so, however, he does not just chronicle the experiences of black Kentucky, because as he notes in his introduction, "such a work would distort the past as much as a book concerned solely with white people." Beginning with an overview of the situation before the war, Howard examines reactions to the emancipation proclamation and how the writ was executed in Kentucky. He also explores the role the army played, both during the war as freed black enlisted and after the war as former slaves transitioned to freedom.
The situation for former slaves in Kentucky was just as precarious as in other southern states, and Howard documents the challenges they faced from keeping families together to finding work. He also documents the early fights for civil rights in the state, detailing battles over the right to testify in court, black suffrage, and access to education. As Black Liberation in Kentucky shows, Kentucky's slaves fought for their freedoms and rights from the beginning, refusing to continue in bondage and proving themselves accomplished actors destined to play a critical role in Civil War and Reconstruction.

Catherine Gomes, "Religion, Hypermobility and Digital Media in Global Asia: Faith, Flows and Fellowship "
English | ISBN: 9463728937 | 2020 | 258 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Digital media is changing the ways in which religion is practiced, understood, proselytised and countered. Religious institutions and leaders use digital media to engage with their congregations who now are not confined to single locations and physical structures. The faithful are part of online communities which allow them a space to worship and to find fellowship. Migrant and mobile subjects thus are able to be connected to their faith - whether home grown or emerging - wherever they may be, providing them with an anchor in unfamiliar physical and cultural surroundings. As Asia rises, mobilities associated with Asian populations have escalated. The notion of 'Global Asia' is a reflection of this increased mobility, where Asia includes not only Asian countries as sites of political independence, but also the transnational networks of Asian trans/migrants, and the diasporic settlements of Asian peoples all over the world. This collection features cutting edge research by scholars across disciplines seeking to understand the role and significance of religion among transnational mobile subjects in this age of digital media, and in particular, as experienced in Global Asia.

Koen Wellens, "Religious Revival in the Tibetan Borderlands: The Premi of Southwest China "
English | ISBN: 0295990694 | 2010 | 288 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Open-access edition: DOI 10.6069/9780295801551

Revival of religious practices of all sorts in China, after decades of systematic government suppression, is a topic of considerable interest to scholars in disciplines ranging from religious studies to anthropology to political science. This book examines contemporary religious practices among the Premi people of the Sichuan-Yunnan-Tibet area, a group of about 60,000 who speak a language belonging to the Qiang branch of Tibeto-Burman. Koen Wellens's ethnographic research in two Premi communities on opposite sides of the border, and his analysis of available historical documents, find multiple advocates and rationales for the revival of both formal Tibetan Buddhism and the indigenous Premi practices centered on ritual specialists called anji.
Wellens argues that the variety in the shape the revitalization process takes―as it affects Premi on the Sichuan side of the border and their counterparts on the Yunnan side―can only be understood in a local cultural context. This full-length study of the Premi, the first in a language other than Chinese, makes a valuable contribution to our ethnographic knowledge of Southwest China, as well as to our understanding of contemporary Chinese religious and cultural politics.
