The ancient area of Lydia has yielded a particularly rich epigraphical harvest of Greek-Roman Antiquity. Inscriptions were found on the surface of ancient sites, during archaeological excavations or discovered in the course of construction work. Over the past decades Hasan Malay (former professor at the Ege University, Izmir) travelled frequently in that region and took copies and photographs of many inscribed stones which were often brought to his attention by inhabitants of remote villages; he also arranged the stones' transport to museums. Further inscriptions were brought to light during a rescue excavation organised by him of the sanctuary of Thea Larmene. From this collection Hasan Malay and Georg Petzl (former professor at the Cologne University) present in this ETAM volume more than 200 unpublished inscriptions, which refer to the religious life. The earliest ones belong to the Hellenistic period, the majority of them were written in the Roman Imperial period, the latest ones date from the Christian Antiquity. The texts belong to various categories: A Lex Sacra, a report on the financing of the mysteries of Artemis, a hymn, a number of oracles, boundary stones, honorific, building and funerary inscriptions, and, above all, dedications, amongst which a good number of confession inscriptions (with the so far only one written in verses). The material is presented according to a geographical order, the accompanying map helps to locate the individual sites. A number of rural sanctuaries are dealt with in special chapters (XVI; XXI-XXIII; XXV); anepigraphic finds (reliefs and sculptures), which were made in these places, are attached in appendices. All the documents - many of them outstanding in novelty - are illustrated by photographs, translated and furnished with commentaries. Detailed indices will be welcomed by the reader wishing to get an overview of the rich material.

Even though it encompasses only a limited period of the Ottoman dynastic history, its importance derives from the fact that it is the oldest annalistic account of Ottoman history that has come down to us. Because the earliest Ottomans left no accounts of themselves, Ahmedi's work became the key source-though almost always without a proper reading of the text-for subsequent theories regarding the social and political structure of the early Ottoman State.
The overwhelming religiosity found in Ahmedi's poem on the Ottomans continues to stir debate among historians. However, his fourteenth-century representation of the ways Ottomans adapted Islam to conform with beliefs of their past reflected a specifically Turkish interpretation of Islam. We can follow that approach in the actions and writings of leaders and poets of succeeding generations of Ottomans all the way to the eighteenth century-that approach was framed by a medieval inheritance whose discursive characteristics continued for centuries. Ahmedi was a discourse-founder and his aim was to represent the Ottoman rulers as pious Muslims.
An understanding of Ahmedi's representation of the role of Islam among the early Ottomans requires careful contemplation not only by putting the discursive characteristics of his predominantly religious text under a literary and philological microscope but also by making an attempt to place his representation within the much larger context of the making of Turkish Islam in Anatolia. Also, in the writing of histories during the Middle Ages, it was neither unusual nor abnormal to integrate religious concepts as "historical facts." The medieval author always endeavored to find a creative way of amalgamating the two through the numerous literary devices that were available to him. Theories on the nature and identity of Ahmedi's text, as well as on the launching of the Ottoman enterprise, surely will continue to evolve in the coming decades-especially when the ongoing Karacahisar excavations in Eskişehir provide us with the archeological record to reconstruct more thoroughly the Ottoman past. Regardless, what we find in the earliest history of the Ottoman State is a pious representation of its founders and a fictional glorification of the jihad as its ideology which continued in subsequent centuries.

Aureliano Más the Second is a fledgling writer at a lucrative fellowship in Mexico City chaired by his aunt, Rose. When Aureliano was very young, his mother left without reason or trace. Aureliano is attempting to write a novel that mirrors his mother's unexplained disappearance while shattering Magical Realism as a genre in the process. It doesn't help though, that he's named after the protagonist of a touchstone of the Magical Realist canon, and raised in the mythical town of Comala.
Aureliano searches for insight and closure from his father and from Rose, who grappled with his mother's disappearance through a failed novel of her own. Perceptual Content is the first book to discuss and compare the representational characters of all the traditional "five senses". It has three main topics or concerns. (1) The diversity of the senses: though Lycan maintains as a working assumption that all perception represents, the similarity between sense modalities ends there. The senses' respective representational modes, styles and structures - not just their mechanisms - differ very strongly from each other. (2) The Layering thesis: Lycan argues that a single sensory representation usually has more than one content, the contents systematically related to each other by a priority or dependence relation. More specifically, a perceptual state may represent one object or property by representing a more primitive or less ambitious one; he calls this the "layering" of content. For example, by hearing a sound sequence involving such-and-such volumes and timbres, you hear a voice speaking, and by hearing the voice, you hear words in a language. In some modalities layering works unexpectedly: nearly all tactile representation derives from representation of conditions of or in the subject's own skin, meaning that touch represents, e.g., the texture of a physical object by, and only by, representing stress within the skin; and even among the skin conditions, some are represented only by representing more primitive ones. (3) Aspect perception: despite Wittgenstein's famous discussion of "seeing as" in a late section of Philosophical Investigations, little has been written on perceiving-as. Besides its intrinsic interest - even popular appeal, what with joke ambiguous figures such as the duck-rabbit and the old/young woman - it remains especially mysterious. Nearly all work on it has concerned vision only. But it is crucial for understanding auditory representation, which is one thing that distinguishes hearing from the other senses. Further, the auditory case severely damages what Lycan and others had thought was the best approach to understanding aspect perception, in terms of attention.
