C is a language with a long past and probably a long future. Being one step up from assembler, it keeps the programmer close to the hardware and if you want to understand how your code takes control without all of the abstractions applied in other languages, C is the one to choose. The only problem is that many books and articles on the subject of C are written by programmers who are happier in higher-level languages - they tend to look down on C and try to explain it as if it were a defective Java or some other language.
In Deep C Dives, Mike James provides in-depth exploration of the essence of C, identifying the strengths of its distinctive traits. This reveals that C has a very special place among the programming languages of today as a powerful and versatile option for low-level programming, something that is often overlooked in books written by programmers who would really rather be using a higher-level language. Desiring Whiteness uncovers the intertwined histories of commercial sex and racial politics in France and the French Empire. Since the French Revolution of 1789, the absence of laws banning interracial marriages has served to reinforce two myths about modern France―first, that it is a sexual democracy and second, it is a color-blind nation where all French citizens can freely marry whomever they wish regardless of their race. Caroline Séquin challenges the narrative of French exceptionalism by revealing the role of prostitution regulation in policing intimate relationships across racial and colonial boundaries in the century following the abolition of slavery.
Desiring Whiteness traces the rise and fall of the "French model" of prostitution policing in the "contact zones" of port cities and garrison towns across France and in Dakar, Senegal, the main maritime entry point of French West Africa. Séquin describes how the regulation of prostitution covertly policed racial relations and contributed to the making of white French identity in an imperial nation-state that claimed to be race-blind. She also examines how sex industry workers exploited, reinforced, or transgressed the racial boundaries of colonial rule.
Brothels served as "gatekeepers of whiteness" in two arenas. In colonial Senegal, white-only brothels helped deter French colonists from entering unions with African women and producing mixed-race children, thus consolidating white minority rule. In the metropole, brothels condoned interracial sex with white sex workers while dissuading colonial men from forming long-term attachments with white French women. Ultimately, brothels followed a similar racial logic that contributed to upholding white supremacy.

Joachim Häfele untersucht den Einfluss von urbanen Disorder-Phänomenen (Incivilities) auf die Furcht vor und die Einstellungen zu Kriminalität. Damit stehen das Disorder-Modell und/oder ähnliche Ansätze (z. B. Broken-Windows-Ansatz) zur Erklärung personaler Kriminalitätsfurcht auf dem Prüfstand. Mithilfe von statistischen Mehrebenenanalysen gelingt es dem Autor, eigenständige Effekte des sozialräumlichen Kontextes auf Kriminalitätsfurcht und personale Kriminalitätseinstellungen zu untersuchen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen u. a., dass Incivilities eine ambivalente und teilweise durchaus widersprüchliche Wirkung auf die Kriminalitätsfurcht haben. Insbesondere Social Incivilities oder abweichende Handlungen erhöhen die Risikoperzeption und führen zu einem Absinken des kriminalitätsbezogenen Sicherheitsgefühls. Social Incivilities, die häufig sichtbare Erscheinungsformen von Armut darstellen, werden immer stärker als allgemeine Bedrohung interpretiert, was sich auch in einer ansteigenden Risikoeinschätzung, Opfer einer Straftat zu werden, niederschlägt.
