Damerow's scholarship ranges across widely different areas including philosophy and history of science, psychology, and education. Among his fields of expertise are the emergence of writing, early Babylonian mathe matics, the history of arithmetic, the relationship between pure and applied mathematics, the theory and methods of mathematics instruction, the tran sition from preclassical to classical mechanics, and the history and theory of relativity.

Alexander Hamilton: America's Forgotten Founder describes the character and achievements of a man who was instrumental in casting the form of our government and especially its strong financial structure. His financial innovations renewed the public credit when war debts threatened to swamp the fledgling economy, provided a stable currency system and established a federal revenue system. Hamilton s involvement in the foreign affairs of the new republic assured its unity, sovereignty and rapid economic growth.
Born in the West Indies, Alexander Hamilton migrated to America when he was fifteen years old, at a time when Colonial America was torn by political unrest with Great Britain. He served in the Revolution as General Washington s chief aide-de-camp and as an officer in combat units. He was a persuasive presence in the Constitutional Convention and helped to lead the subsequent ratification process.
Hamilton was a proponent for a strong central government, believing that its direct influence over the people would strengthen the unity of the country. As Secretary of the Treasury, he understood that a strong financial system was essential to provide credibility and economic growth to the new republic. He based his financial plan on the consolidation of the national debt and the adoption of a taxation system to service and retire that debt. He promoted the chartering of the Bank of the United States as the keystone to his financial plan.
Arguably the Father of Federalism, Hamilton gave more to the structure and process of the United States government then any other single individual. His opponents, principally the Jeffersonian Republicans, argued for greater sovereignty for state governments and sought to diminish the role of wealth in structuring and operating the financial systems of the country. When it came, the Civil War vindicated Hamilton's politics over Jefferson's view of a more tenuous and tentative union.
He authored the lion's share of The Federalist Papers, writings which remain an important guide to the meaning and the intended function of the Constitution today.
Regrettably, the hostility of his political opponents has transcended the country's recognition of the debt owed to this man.
This work introduces the general reader to some of the challenges and controversies of the early days of the Republic and highlights Hamilton's brilliant contributions to US policy and structure. Hamilton promoted a vigorous national government to create a strong and unified country out of a mixed bag of 13 sovereign states.
This book was written for the broad cross-section of American readers, particularly those who, while not having an abiding interest in history, would welcome an interestingly written, brief history of Hamilton's life and the great events surrounding the founding of the nation. This volume began as the last part of a one-term graduate course given at the Fields Institute for Research in the Mathematical Sciences in the Autumn of 1993. The course was one of four associated with the 1993-94 Fields Institute programme, which I helped to organise, entitled "Artin L-functions". Published as [132]' the final chapter of the course introduced a manner in which to construct class-group valued invariants from Galois actions on the algebraic K-groups, in dimensions two and three, of number rings. These invariants were inspired by the analogous Chin burg invariants of [34], which correspond to dimensions zero and one. The classical Chinburg invariants measure the Galois structure of classical objects such as units in rings of algebraic integers. However, at the "Galois Module Structure" workshop in February 1994, discussions about my invariant (0,1 (L/ K, 3) in the notation of Chapter 5) after my lecture revealed that a number of other higher-dimensional co homological and motivic invariants of a similar nature were beginning to surface in the work of several authors. Encouraged by this trend and convinced that K-theory is the archetypical motivic cohomology theory, I gratefully took the opportunity of collaboration on computing and generalizing these K-theoretic invariants. These generalizations took several forms - local and global, for example - as I followed part of number theory and the prevalent trends in the "Galois Module Structure" arithmetic geometry.

The laws of composition include addition and multiplication of numbers or func tions. These are the basic operations of algebra. One can generalize these operations to groups where there is just one law. The theory of this book was started in 1800 by Gauss, when he solved the 2000 year-old Greek problem about constructing regular n-gons by ruler and compass. The theory was further developed by Abel and Galois. After years of development the theory was put in the present form by E. Noether and E. Artin in 1930. At that time it was called modern algebra and concentrated on the abstract exposition of the theory. Nowadays there are too many examples to go into their details. I think the student should study the proofs of the theorems and not spend time looking for solutions to tricky exercises. The exercises are designed to clarify the theory. In algebra there are four basic structures; groups, rings, fields and modules. We present the theory of these basic structures. Hopefully this will give a good introduc tion to modern algebra. I have assumed as background that the reader has learned linear algebra over the real numbers but this is not necessary.
