A non-technical introduction to the question of modeling with time-varying parameters, using the beta coefficient from Financial Economics as the main example. The Kalman filter is then introduced and a simple example is used to demonstrate the power of the filter. The filter is then used to estimate the market model with time-varying betas. The book concludes with further examples of how the Kalman filter may be used in estimation models used in analyzing other aspects of finance. The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. Besides its epic narrative of the Kurukshetra War and the fates of the Kauravas and the Pandava princes, the Mahabharata contains much philosophical and devotional material, such as a discussion of the four "goals of life" or purusharthas.
Among the principal works and stories that are a part of the Mahabharata are the Bhagavad Gita, the story of Damayanti, an abbreviated version of the Ramayana, and the Rishyasringa, often considered as works in their own right.
The Mahabharata is the longest Sanskrit epic. Its longest version consists of over 100,000 shloka or over 200,000 individual verse lines (each shloka is a couplet), and long prose passages. About 1.8 million words in total, the Mahabharata is roughly ten times the length of the Iliad and Odyssey combined, or about four times the length of the Ramayana.
The author is believed to be Vyasa, who is a central and revered figure in most Hindu traditions. He is also sometimes called Veda Vyasa (the one who classified the Vedas in to four parts) or Krishna Dvaipayana (referring to his complexion and birthplace). He is the author as well as a character in the Mahabharata and considered to be the scribe of both the Vedas, and the supplementary texts such as the Puranas. This edition contains the first of the Mahabharata books - Adi Parva.

The moduli space Mgof curves of fixed genus g - that is, the algebraic variety that parametrizes all curves of genus g - is one of the most intriguing objects of study in algebraic geometry these days. Its appeal results not only from its beautiful mathematical structure but also from recent developments in theoretical physics, in particular in conformal field theory.Leading experts in the field explore in this volume both the structure of the moduli space of curves and its relationship with physics through quantum cohomology. Altogether, this is a lively volume that testifies to the ferment in the field and gives an excellent view of the state of the art for both mathematicians and theoretical physicists. It is a persuasive example of the famous Wignes comment, and its converse, on "the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural science."Witteen's conjecture in 1990 describing the intersection behavior of tautological classes in the cohomology of Mg arose directly from string theory. Shortly thereafter a stunning proof was provided by Kontsevich who, in this volume, describes his solution to the problem of counting rational curves on certain algebraic varieties and includes numerous suggestions for further development. The same problem is given an elegant treatment in a paper by Manin. There follows a number of contributions to the geometry, cohomology, and arithmetic of the moduli spaces of curves. In addition, several contributors address quantum cohomology and conformal field theory.

This book is a concise presentation of the normal distribution on the real line and its counterparts on more abstract spaces, which we shall call the Gaussian distributions. The material is selected towards presenting characteristic properties, or characterizations, of the normal distribution. There are many such properties and there are numerous rel evant works in the literature. In this book special attention is given to characterizations generated by the so called Maxwell's Theorem of statistical mechanics, which is stated in the introduction as Theorem 0.0.1. These characterizations are of interest both intrin sically, and as techniques that are worth being aware of. The book may also serve as a good introduction to diverse analytic methods of probability theory. We use characteristic functions, tail estimates, and occasionally dive into complex analysis. In the book we also show how the characteristic properties can be used to prove important results about the Gaussian processes and the abstract Gaussian vectors. For instance, in Section 5.4 we present Fernique's beautiful proofs of the zero-one law and of the integrability of abstract Gaussian vectors. The central limit theorem is obtained via characterizations in Section 7.3.
