Tailships: The Hunt for Soviet Submarines in the Mediterranean, 1970-1973 (Europe@War) by John Rodgaard
English | December 31, 2023 | ISBN: 1914377095 | 84 pages | PDF | 30 Mb
"Both from the analytic description of the scientific background to that of the author's firsthand human experience, to the historical development of the technology, to the political and strategic context of the time, this book contains a LOT - including an extremely important collection of sources referenced in its notes and bibliography." ― National Maritime Historical Society

Obsolete, except for the experimental anti-submarine warfare sensor they carried, the USS Hammerberg, DE-1015, the USS Courtney, DE-1021 and the USS Lester, DE-1022 went to the Mediterranean to demonstrate the potential of a technology that relied on a passive towed array detection system; what the Navy officially designated as the Interim Towed Array Surveillance System (ITASS).
These 'Tailships' entered the Med in 1970. It was then that the US and NATO navies operated in a naval environment characterized by the most intense concentration of Soviet submarines and surface ships outside of Soviet home waters. The Mediterranean was the focal point in the great naval rivalry of the United States, with its NATO allies, against the Soviet Union's Voyenno-morskoi flot (Military Maritime Fleet).
When deployed as Tailships, these DEs proved so successful against Soviet submarines that the US Navy committed additional resources to refining the capability of passive towed array sonars. The development of the Towed Array Surveillance System (TASS), the Surveillance Towed Array Sonar System (SURTASS) and the Tactical Towed Array Sonar (TACTASS) deployable systems were direct follow-ons to ITASS.
The ships' deployment occurred during a time when the United States was torn apart by the war in Vietnam. Although far away, the effect of Vietnam on the ships' crews as well as the Sixth Fleet reflected the greater turmoil within the society they served. The turmoil was evident in the competition for resources to keep the ships steaming and in personnel tensions among the crews.
Additionally, the ships and men operated in a sea surrounded by increasing tensions in the Middle East. While stationed in Naples, Italy, the Palestinian Black September Organization created terror across Europe during the summer of 1972, with the massacre of the Israeli Olympic athletes in Munich, West Germany. That summer would see these sailors spending nights in Naples standing anti-terrorist watches with loaded weapons, whilst the pinging of an active sonar system would echo throughout the hulls of the moored ships. It was thought this would discourage swimmers wanting to plant explosive devices on ship hulls.
The objective of this book is simply to tell the story of these three ships and their men within the context of the greater events of the Cold War at sea in the Mediterranean; the successes and failures of operating in the Mediterranean, and life for those who called Naples their temporary home.

Tanks in the Philippines 1944-45
by Steven J. Zaloga

English | November 21, 2024 | ISBN: 1472859421 | 48 Pages | Zaloga | 19,12 MB

The first book to examine the Japanese and American tank forces in the Philippines campaigns, which saw the biggest armored clashes of the Pacific War.
The Philippines saw the most extensive tank combat of any single theater in the Pacific War. In this book, armor expert Steven J. Zaloga explains the capabilities of the tank forces involved and how they fought.
He explains how while the first tank clashes on Leyte were relatively small scale, the fighting for Luzon, including the capital Manila, saw massive use of tanks by Pacific standards, and indeed, Luzon was the only place where a Japanese armored division was thrown into combat against US forces. While there was some tank-vs-tank combat in northern Luzon when the Japanese 2nd Tank Division faced separate US Army tank battalions, most tank fighting in the Philippines involved their use in the traditional infantry support role, including in the largest urban battle of the Pacific War, the horrific struggle for Manila.
Packed with rare archive photos and detailed original illustrations of the tanks, this book offers a concisely detailed account of the neglected role of armor in the recapture of the Philippines.

Technology, Crafting and Artisanal Networks in the Greek and Roman World
by Diego Elia, Eleni Hasaki, Marco Serino

English | 2024 | ISBN: 3111154610 | 396 pages | True PDF EPUB | 80.43 MB

This volume aims to merge theoretical models with methodological approaches on ceramic technology and artisanal networks in the Classical world. This convergence of analytical frameworks allowed scholars to explore some traditional archaeological topics that usually have a very low-level of visibility, such as the skillful gestures of the craftspeople involved, the organization of the ceramic production, the dynamics of apprenticeship and knowledge transfer as well as intra and inter-regional artisanal mobility, in the Graeco-Roman 'communities of practice'.
The papers promote interdisciplinary dialogues among various fields of study, such as archaeology, archaeometry, anthropology, ethnoarchaeology, experimental archaeology, and digital humanities - such as Social Network Analysis, computational imaging, and big data analysis.

Asli Özgen, "The Aesthetics and Politics of Cinematic Pedestrianism: Walking in Films "
English | ISBN: 9463724753 | 2022 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
The Aesthetics and Politics of Cinematic Pedestrianism: Walking in Films offers a rich exploration of the cinematic aesthetics that filmmakers devised to reflect the corporeal and affective experience of walking in the city. Drawing from literature in urban studies, film theory, and aesthetic philosophy, it is the first monograph to approach the history of cinema from the perspective of walking. A series of case studies providing nuanced analyses of widely referenced figures, such as the flaneur/flâneuse, vagabond, and nomad, reveal how filmmakers articulated their objection to repressive structures through depictions of walking: a common, everyday act yet transgressive, bold, and indomitable. Through the lens of Henri Lefebvre's theory of space, Michel de Certeau's concept of pedestrian acts, and Jacques Rancière's treatment of the politics of aesthetics, Walking in Films traces how cinema evolved in conversation with the mobile body and the new images, styles, and techniques that emerged with it.

The Age of Subtlety: Nature and Rhetorical Conceits in Early Modern Europe
by Javier Patiño Loira
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1644533456 | 327 Pages | PDF | 11.6 MB

A craze for intricate metaphors, referred to as conceits, permeated all forms of communication in seventeenth-century Italy and Spain, reshaping reality in highly creative ways. The Age of Subtlety: Nature and Rhetorical Conceits in Early Modern Europe situates itself at the crossroads of rhetoric, poetics, and the history of science, analyzing technical writings on conceits by such scholars as Baltasar Gracián, Matteo Peregrini, and Emanuele Tesauro against the background of debates on telescopic and microscopic vision, the generation of living beings, and the boundaries between the natural and the artificial. It contends that in order to understand conceits, we must locate them within the early modern culture of ingenuity that was also responsible for the engineer's machines, the juggler's sleight of hand, the wiles of the statesman, and the discovery of truths about nature.

Miel Groten, "The Architecture of Empire in Modern Europe: Space, Place, and the Construction of an Imperial Environment, 1860-1960 "
English | ISBN: 9463721479 | 2022 | 340 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Empires stretched around the world, but also made their presence felt in architecture and urban landscapes. The Architecture of Empire in Modern Europe traces the entanglement of the European built environment with overseas imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As part of imperial networks between metropole and colonies, in cities as diverse as Glasgow, Hamburg, or Paris, numerous new buildings were erected such as factories, mission houses, offices, and museums. These sites developed into the physical manifestations of imperial networks. As Europeans designed, used, and portrayed them, these buildings became meaningful imperial places that conveyed the power relations of empire and Eurocentric self-images. Engaging with recent debates about colonial history and heritage, this book combines a variety of sources, an interdisciplinary approach, and an international scope to produce a cultural history of European imperial architecture across borders.

The Art of Execution: How the world's best investors get it wrong and still make millions by Lee Freeman-Shor
English | September 14, 2015 | ISBN: 085719495X | 130 pages | MOBI | 0.52 Mb
Over seven years, 45 of the world's top investors were given between $25 and $150m to invest by fund manager Lee Freeman-Shor. His instructions were simple. There was only one rule. They could only invest in their ten best ideas to make money.

It seemed like a foolproof plan to make a lot of money. What could possibly go wrong? These were some of the greatest minds at work in the markets today - from top European hedge fund managers to Wall Street legends.
But most of the investors' great ideas actually lost money. Shockingly, a toss of a coin would have been a better method of choosing whether or not to invest in a stock.
Nevertheless, despite being wrong most of the time, many of these investors still ended up making a lot of money.
How could they be wrong most of the time and still be profitable? The answer lay in their hidden habits of execution, which until now have only been guessed at from the outside world.
This book lays bare those secret habits for the first time, explaining them with real-life data, case studies and stories taken from Freeman-Shor's unique position of managing these investors on a day-to-day basis.
A riveting read for investors of every level, this book shows you exactly what to do and what not to do when your big idea is losing or winning - and demonstrates conclusively why the most important thing about investing is always the art of execution.

The Art of Not Eating: A Doubtful History of Appetite and Desire by Jessica Hamel-Akré
English | August 22, 2024 | ISBN: 1838957030 | 320 pages | PDF | 3.79 Mb
A luminously original exploration of the deep roots of diet culture by an award-winning historian

'Fascinating' Katherine May
'These books ... deepen our understanding of how our bodies are ourselves, and how we may live...' New Statesman
'Beautifully written, lyrical and unflinching' Charlotte Fox Weber
'Her passion for her topic spills into her writing; the conclusions she draws are troubling and thought-provoking' The Telegraph
The day Jessica Hamel-Akré discovered the ideas of George Cheyne - an eighteenth-century polymath and London society figure known as 'Dr Diet' - it sparked an intellectual obsession, a ten-year study of women's appetite and a personal unravelling.
In this bold and radical book, Hamel-Akré follows Cheyne through the pages of medical studies, novels and historical scandals, meeting ash-eating mystics, wasting society girls, impoverished female fasters and early feminist philosophers, all of whom were once grappling with nascent ideas around food, longing and the body. In doing so, she uncovers the eighteenth-century origins of both today's diet culture and her own troubled relationship with wanting.
Blending history and memoir, The Art of Not Eating will change the way we look at appetite, desire, rationality and oppression, and show how it all got tangled up with what we eat.

The "Asian Turn" in Russian Foreign Policy
by Anatoly Torkunov, Dmitry Streltsov
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9819753910 | 578 Pages | True PDF | 8.9 MB

This book explores the seemingly unstoppable turn away from Europe and towards Asian powers, notably China, on the part of the Russian state in the early 21st century. Ongoing global changes, the growing complexity of international interactions and internal political dynamics in Russia have led to what has become known in Russian official and expert discourse as the "Asian turn" or "turn to the East". The monograph systemically analyzes all key directions of Russia's Asian turn and assesses achievements, problems and prospects of Russian strategy in Asia in a wider international context. The book might be interesting to those who are professionally studying IR, international dynamics in Asia, and Russian foreign policy in Asia.

The Balaĝ Prayer "Oh, My Abzu!": The God Enki in Sumerian Laments
Uri Gabbay
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3447122714 | 199 Pages | PDF | 11.3 MB

Uri Gabbay presents a critical edition of the ancient Mesopotamian prayer of lamentation Oh, My Abzu! (a abzu-ĝu10) which belongs to the group of Balaĝ prayers and is written in the Emesal register of the Sumerian language. This prayer has only been partially identified and addressed in previous research.
The edition of the prayer is based on several cuneiform tablets and fragments from the first millennium BC, mainly from the cities of Nineveh, Babylon, and Uruk, as well as on a cuneiform tablet from Babylon dating back to the second millennium BC. Some of these tablets and fragments are published for the first time. The prayer includes laments about the destruction of the temples of the god Enki in the city of Eridu and of the god Asalluḫi in the city of Kuara. Gabbay offers a general discussion on the prayers and laments related to the god Enki, as well as on the image of this god in comparison to the god Enlil. In addition, the image of the lamenting goddess and other literary and theological themes that can be found in the prayers and laments of the god Enki are explored.

The Ball and Some Hilbert Problems By Rolf-Peter Holzapfel (auth.)
1995 | 160 Pages | ISBN: 3764328355 | PDF | 5 MB
As an interesting object of arithmetic, algebraic and analytic geometry the complex ball was born in a paper of the French Mathematician E. PICARD in 1883. In recent developments the ball finds great interest again in the framework of SHIMURA varieties but also in the theory of diophantine equations (asymptotic FERMAT Problem, see ch. VI). At first glance the original ideas and the advanced theories seem to be rather disconnected. With these lectures I try to build a bridge from the analytic origins to the actual research on effective problems of arithmetic algebraic geometry. The best motivation is HILBERT'S far-reaching program consisting of 23 prob lems (Paris 1900) " . . . one should succeed in finding and discussing those functions which play the part for any algebraic number field corresponding to that of the exponential function in the field of rational numbers and of the elliptic modular functions in the imaginary quadratic number field". This message can be found in the 12-th problem "Extension of KRONECKER'S Theorem on Abelian Fields to Any Algebraic Realm of Rationality" standing in the middle of HILBERTS'S pro gram. It is dedicated to the construction of number fields by means of special value of transcendental functions of several variables. The close connection with three other HILBERT problems will be explained together with corresponding advanced theories, which are necessary to find special effective solutions, namely: 7. Irrationality and Transcendence of Certain Numbers; 21.

The Bataan Death March
by Chad Godfrey

English | November 24, 2024 | ISBN: 1036113450 | 262 Pages | epub | 3,21 MB

Shortly after the surprise bombing of Pearl Harbor in late 1941, over 70,000 American and Filipino servicemen were captured by the Japanese in the Philippines. What ensued for these young men is considered by many military historians to be one of the most barbaric sequences of war crimes in history, yet it remains an incredibly inspiring story of unmatched heroism and survival.
According to the Japanese code of Bushido a soldier captured alive had dishonored himself and his country, so their new prisoners were often regarded with utter contempt. Then Second Lieutenant Patrick Rafferty and his fellow "Battling Bastards of Bataan" had just forfeited the right to be treated humanely, at least in the eyes of their captors. Forced to march shoeless over sixty-five miles northward in unbearable heat with no water or food, men were routinely executed if they showed any signs of slowing the forward progress towards their internment camp. Some estimates suggest that nearly 18,000 men perished during the infamous Bataan Death March, bones and souls left unceremoniously in shallow graves on a dusty roadside.
Ghastly Japanese prison camps awaited those 'lucky' enough to survive the Death March. Long, hard days of unrelenting slave labour under the watchful eyes and beating sticks of the prison guards drove many a young soldier to his early grave. If the torture and executions did not take one's life, any number of intestinal diseases could, and often did.
Having no communication with the outside world, the prisoners were assured the US and its allies had surrendered, adding heavy layers of mental anguish on top of the gruesome physical toll endured. Adding to this tortuous uncertainty, prisoners like Rafferty were routinely shuffled to new locations, sometimes via the notorious 'hell ships' like Oryoku Maru, where Allied soldiers were routinely drowned or murdered by the thousands, often by friendly fire. Still, tales of unwavering friendship and comradery thread beautifully throughout Rafferty's account, often charmed by his Boston-Irish sense of humour, offering well-placed balance to the horrors.
Decades later, then Lieutenant Colonel Rafferty would finally, bravely share his long-suppressed memories and the pain they brought. Speaking into a handheld tape recorder with striking detail, he revealed the true story of what he and his comrades endured. Amongst other jaw-dropping anecdotes from his three-and-a-half years as a POW, perhaps his most gripping personal horror was burying his sickly friend alive as a bayonet pointed into the back of his own neck to ensure the shovelling continued.
This, then, is a moving first-hand account of survival at its most brutal core.

The Bavarian Army has been overshadowed by those of Gustavus Adolphus' and Wallenstein's Armies, but it was one of only a few armies to have fought throughout the Thirty Years War, first as part of the Catholic League and then an independent army after the Peace of Prague. Among the generals of the Bavarian Army were Count Johan von Tilly and Gottfried von Pappenheim, who are two of the most famous generals of the war.
This book covers not only the Bavarian Army's organisation, but also has chapters on recruitment, officers, clothing, weaponry, pay and rations of a soldier during the Thirty Years War. As well as life and death in the army, this book also looks at the women who accompanied it. The chapter on 'civilians and soldiers' looks at the impact of the war on the civilian population, their reaction to it and the infamous sack of Magdeburg which sent shockwaves across Europe. This chapter also looks at the impact on Bavaria by having Swedish, Spanish and Imperialist troops quartered upon it and how this affected the country's war effort.
In addition there are chapters on regimental colours and a detailed look into the tactics of the time, including those of Spain, Sweden and the Dutch. As well as using archival and archaeological evidence to throw new light on the subject the author has used several memoirs written by those who served in the army during the war, including Peter Hagendorf who served in Pappenheim 's Regiment of Foot from 1627 until the regiment was disbanded after the war. Hagendorf's vivid account is unique because not only is it a full account of the life of a common soldier during the war, but also records the human side of campaign, including the death of his two wives and all but two of his children. This book is essential reading to anyone interested in the wars of the early seventeenth century, not just the Thirty Years War.

The Corporation in the TThe Corporation in the Twenty-First Century: Why (Almost) Everything We Are Told About Business is Wrongwenty-First Century by
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1805221728. | 490 pages | PDF | 4.70 Mb
LONGLISTED FOR THE FINANCIAL TIMES AND SCHRODERS BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024

For generations, we have defined a corporation as a business run by a capitalist elite, that uses its accumulated wealth to own the means of production and exercise economic power.
That is no longer the reality. In the twenty-first century, our most desired goods and services aren't stacked in warehouses or on container ships: they appear on your screen, fit in your pocket or occupy your head.
But even as we consume more than ever before, big business faces a crisis of legitimacy. The pharmaceutical industry creates life-saving vaccines but has lost the trust of the public. The widening pay gap between executives and employees is destabilising our societies. Facebook and Google have more customers than any companies in history but are widely reviled.
John Kay, one of the greatest economists of our time, describes how the pursuit of shareholder value has destroyed some of the leading companies of the twentieth century. Incisive and provocative, this book redefines successful commercial activity and leadership, the knowledge economy and what the future of the modern corporation might be.

The Curious Case of Usable Privacy: Challenges, Solutions, and Prospects (Synthesis Lectures on Information Security, Privacy, and Trust) by Simone Fischer-Hübner, Farzaneh Karegar
English | March 20, 2024 | ISBN: 303154157X | 180 pages | MOBI | 4.32 Mb
This book journeys through the labyrinth of usable privacy, a place where the interplay of privacy and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) reveals a myriad of challenges, solutions, and new possibilities. Establishing a solid understanding of usable privacy research, practices, and challenges, the book illuminates for readers the often shadowy corridors of such a multifaceted domain and offers guidelines and solutions to successfully traverse the challenging maze.

The book does not simply focus on data protection or legislative frameworks but also on what it takes for privacy to be safeguarded, understood, embraced, and easily practiced by all. It begins with a thorough exploration of the background of privacy tools and technologies, the evolution of privacy rules and regulations, and the backdrop upon which this narrative unfolds. After establishing this context, its next important focus is the current state and future directions of the field, including thefrontiers of usable privacy research in relation to the Internet of Things (IoT), usability of PETs, and usable privacy for UX and software developers. The book also considers the often-overlooked privacy narratives of marginalized communities and delves into the complexities of user-centric privacy.
Readers are provided with a blueprint for addressing these hurdles and establishing pathways for a more privacy-conscious world. The text will be of interest to students studying Computer Science, Information Systems, or Law, as well as researchers and practitioners working in the fields of usable privacy, privacy by design, Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), or HCI. All will benefit from the book's central deliberation of a question that echoes through time and technological advancements: why does usable privacy matter?
