The Third International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications (ADMA) organized in Harbin, China continued the tradition already established by the first two ADMA conferences in Wuhan in 2005 and Xi'an in 2006. One major goal of ADMA is to create a respectable identity in the data mining research com- nity. This feat has been partially achieved in a very short time despite the young age of the conference, thanks to the rigorous review process insisted upon, the outstanding list of internationally renowned keynote speakers and the excellent program each year. The impact of a conference is measured by the citations the conference papers receive. Some have used this measure to rank conferences. For example, the independent source cs-conference-ranking.org ranks ADMA (0.65) higher than PAKDD (0.64) and PKDD (0.62) as of June 2007, which are well established conferences in data mining. While the ranking itself is questionable because the exact procedure is not disclosed, it is nevertheless an encouraging indicator of recognition for a very young conference such as ADMA.

The Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM) was held in Hong Kong, at the City University of Hong Kong, during December 11-14, 2007. Started in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, including Sydney, Beijing, Hsinchu, Singapore, Tokyo, Jeju, and Zhejiang in chronological order. PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2007 was organized into 5 different tracks with a total of 247 submissions from 26 countries and regions including Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, the UK and the USA. Among the five tracks, "multimedia analysis and retrieval" received the most number of submissions (34% of the submissions). After a rigorous review process, 73 papers were accepted for oral presentations, giving an acceptance rate of under 29% for PCM 2007. In addition, 21 papers were accepted for poster presentations. We would like to thank all the Track Chairs and the reviewers for their timely handling of the paper reviews. We are particularly grateful to Chong-Wah Ngo and his team for their support of the Web-based review system throughout the process. We are also indebted to the Special Sessions Chairs, Qi Tian and Timothy Shih, for the organization of the two special sessions on "The AVS China National Standard" and "Multimedia Information System for Biomedical Research," respectively.

Anthony Sherley (1565-1633) was one of three brothers from a Sussex gentry family, whose adventures abroad fascinated their contemporaries. Their doings were celebrated and exaggerated in printed pamphlets and a play on the London stage, but are scarcely known today. Anthony was a soldier fighting in France and the Netherlands, and then an unsuccessful privateer, before his patron, the earl of Essex, chose him to lead a group on a mission to Ferrara, which proved abortive. Sherley then undertook on his own initiative to take his followers on a highly risky journey across Turkey to Persia. He hoped to persuade the Shah to ally with the West against their mutual enemy, Ottoman Turkey. Surprisingly, Shah Abbas the Great (1587-1629) approved the plan, and sent Sherley back to Europe as his ambassador.

But after that things went badly wrong. Essex lost all influence at court, and was eventually executed for treason. Sherley was refused permission to return to England. He was on his own, and had to find new ways of living and earning. After various episodes in Venice and Morocco he ended up in the pay of Spain, and was chosen to command a fleet created to stop pirates from attacking Spanish possessions. After the failure of this project he was forced to retire to Granada, and lived the rest of his life on a meagre royal pension. But he continued trying to give advice, based on his past experiences, to the king of Spain and his ministers.
The book will concentrate on Sherley's career, but will broaden the theme by including chapters on his father and his two brothers, and in particular on Persia and Shah Abbas, the Persian king whom he met. Anthony was an irascible, complex character, often derided and disliked. This biography is more sympathetic than previous ones, and discusses his self-fashioning and his belief in his personal honour, both of which might account for some of his misdemeanours, especially after the death of his patron.

An Introduction to Universal Artificial Intelligence provides the formal underpinning of what it means for an agent to act intelligently in an unknown environment. AIXI is the theoretical gold standard for intelligent behavior.
The book covers both the theoretical and practical aspects of UAI. Bayesian updating can be done efficiently with context tree weighting, and planning can be approximated by sampling with Monte Carlo tree search. It provides algorithms for the reader to implement, and experimental results to compare against. These algorithms are used to approximate AIXI. The book ends with a philosophical discussion of Artificial General Intelligence: Can super-intelligent agents even be constructed? Is it inevitable that they will be constructed, and what are the potential consequences?
This text is suitable for late undergraduate students. It provides an extensive chapter to fill in the required mathematics, probability, information, and computability theory background.
