first twelve months of past administrations, and draw practical lessons from that history, as we
prepare to inaugurate a new president in January 2017.
This project is the
basis for a new series of digital shorts published as Miller Center Studies on the Presidency.
Addressing the theme of national security, this debut volume examines the first-year experiences
of five previous administrations, including those of John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, George H.
W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush. Presented as specially priced collections published
exclusively in an ebook format, these timely examinations recognize the experiences of past

The death of Ptolemy VI brought his younger brother Ptolemy VIII to the kingship. This was the start of a prolonged, if intermittent, turbulent period of family strife, punctuated by rebellions, Descriptions and wars. One king, Ptolemy VII, was murdered, Ptolemy VIII's two simultaneous wives Descriptionted and rebelled, and when he died one of these, Kleopatra III, was his effective successor.
Ptolemy VIII was in fact not a bad king in some ways, and encouraged the exploitation of the discovery of the monsoon climate of the Indian Ocean to develop trade with India, as well as using his (much reduced) navy to maintain contact with the lands of the Mediterranean. Kleopatra III made a renewed effort to reconquer Palestine, but failed (Eighth Syrian War).
From the death of Ptolemy IX in 80 BC there were two overriding problems. Ptolemy IX was the last legitimate Ptolemy, and the succession was constantly in dispute from then on. And looming over all was the rising power of Rome. This had been largely absent from the eastern Mediterranean until the Mithradatic wars brought its power repeatedly into the East. Egypt gradually became drawn into the republic's orbit, mainly as a source of cash to fund its wars and the greed of the Roman aristocracy until, choosing the side of Mark Antony, the final Ptolemy, Kleopatra VII, went down to defeat before Octavian's forces.

Most people, if they have heard anything about Hegel, associate him with the "dialectical method" he claimed to use. The associated "Hegelian dialectic" is often cavalierly explained as thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. Yet, in fact, Hegel never wrote any substantial account of dialectical logic or dialectical method. This book reopens the whole question of the dialectical method in a contemporary context. A variety of factors surround military firearms - they needed to be produced in large numbers to a standardised pattern at an affordable price. This books examines the transition from traditional hand-craft methods to the beginnings of mechanised manufacture using as examples the French Model 1777 and the Russian Model 1808 infantry muskets.
A number of factors led to this choice. The French Model 1777 musket, designed by Honoré Blanc working under General Gribeauval, contained many novel features which became blueprints for the arms of numerous countries and was copied in its entirety by Russia. Another factor is that they are the only firearms whose manufacture is covered in contemporary accounts. A third factor is that they provide contrasts in their methods of manufacture; the French 1777 musket was largely produced by hand-craft methods, whereas in Russia we see the beginnings of extensive mechanisation in the early 19th century.
Another important aspect which appears is 'interchangeability' - the ability to exchange identical parts of identical mechanism without 'special adjustment'. This is a vital factor at the foundation of modern manufacturing and first appears in early 18th century France, was pursued again by Blanc in 1777 and was picked up in Russia.
For the first time, all these 'technologies' are examined, explained, compared and contrasted in extensive detail.

Britain and Russia maintained a frosty civility for a few years after Napoleon's defeat in 1815. But, by the 1820s, their relations degenerated into constant acrimonious rivalry over Persia, the Ottoman Empire, Central Asia-the Great Game-and, towards the end of the century, East Asia.

Pythagoras of Samos (born between 580 and 572 BC, died between 500 and 490 BC) was an Ionian Greek mathematician and founder of the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. He is best known for the Pythagorean theorem, which bears his name. He was the first man to call himself a philosopher, or lover of wisdom, and Pythagorean ideas exercised a marked influence on Plato. Unfortunately, very little is known about Pythagoras because none of his writings have survived.
