Remarkably, the author shows how to calculate arbitrarily high orders of derivatives of Dirichlet's energy defined on the infinite dimensional manifold of all surfaces spanning a contour, breaking new ground in the Calculus of Variations, where normally only the second derivative or variation is calculated.
The monograph begins with easy examples leading to a proof in a large number of cases that can be presented in a graduate course in either manifolds or complex analysis. Thus this monograph requires only the most basic knowledge of analysis, complex analysis and topology and can therefore be read by almost anyone with a basic graduate education.

Musicologist Dorothy Lamb Crawford looks closely at the lives, creative work, and influence of sixteen performers, fourteen composers, and one opera stage director, who joined this immense migration beginning in the 1930s. Some in this group were famous when they fled Europe, others would gain recognition in the young musical culture of Los Angeles, and still others struggled to establish themselves in an environment often resistant to musical innovation.
Emphasizing individual voices, Crawford presents short portraits of Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, and the other musicians while also considering their influence as a group-in the film industry, in music institutions in and around Los Angeles, and as teachers who trained the next generation. Das Alles-oder-Nichts-Prinzip im Versicherungsvertragsrecht steht seit mehr als 70 Jahren in der Kritik. Da die Rechtsprechung nur beschränkt Abhilfe schaffen kann, stellt sich die Frage nach einer Gesetzesänderung. Der Autor stellt die bestehende Rechtslage sowie die erhobene Kritik dar und untersucht, inwieweit die Leistungsfreiheit des Versicherers de lege ferenda durch eine mildere Rechtsfolge ersetzt werden kann. Dabei gelangt er zu dem Ergebnis, dass die mit dem Alles-oder-Nichts-Prinzip verbundenen Probleme auf die Inflexibilität der Leistungsfreiheitstatbestände zurückzuführen sind, die Leistungsfreiheit als Sanktion nicht unbedingt erforderlich ist und im Zivilrecht allgemein eine Tendenz zum Abbau von Alles-oder-Nichts-Regelungen zu Gunsten flexibler Regelungen auszumachen ist. Auf Basis dieser Ergebnisse formuliert Philipp Neumann einen Vorschlag für eine Gesetzesänderung.
