The Making of Modern Japan by Marius B. Jansen
English | December 8, 2000 | ISBN: 0674003349, 0674009916 | True PDF | 933 pages | 3.7 MB
Magisterial in vision, sweeping in scope, this monumental work presents a seamless account of Japanese society during the modern era, from 1600 to the present. A distillation of more than fifty years' engagement with Japan and its history, it is the crowning work of our leading interpreter of the modern Japanese experience.

Since 1600 Japan has undergone three periods of wrenching social and institutional change, following the imposition of hegemonic order on feudal society by the Tokugawa shogun; the opening of Japan's ports by Commodore Perry; and defeat in World War II. The Making of Modern Japan charts these changes: the social engineering begun with the founding of the shogunate in 1600, the emergence of village and castle towns with consumer populations, and the diffusion of samurai values in the culture.
Jansen covers the making of the modern state, the adaptation of Western models, growing international trade, the broadening opportunity in Japanese society with industrialization, and the postwar occupation reforms imposed by General MacArthur. Throughout, the book gives voice to the individuals and views that have shaped the actions and beliefs of the Japanese, with writers, artists, and thinkers, as well as political leaders given their due.
The story this book tells, though marked by profound changes, is also one of remarkable consistency, in which continuities outweigh upheavals in the development of society, and successive waves of outside influence have only served to strengthen a sense of what is unique and native to Japanese experience. The Making of Modern Japan takes us to the core of this experience as it illuminates one of the contemporary world's most compelling transformations.

Peter J. Hasson, "The Manipulators: Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Big Tech's War on Conservatives"
English | ISBN: 1621579581 | 2020 | 256 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB
The dawn of the digital age was supposed to be a new era, when everybody would have a voice and battle it out in the marketplace of ideas-intellectual democracy at the touch of a keyboard. Social media offered a way for conservatives to outflank the leftist groupthink that dominated academia, the media, and the political establishment.

But, as investigative reporter Peter J. Hasson shows in his explosive new book, The Manipulators, that's no longer the case.
Instead, Big Tech companies have become enforcers of intellectual conformity: promoting leftist ideas, punishing dissent, and dictating politically correct opinions.
Big Tech's grip on the levers of information seems unbreakable. Hasson, working with sources deep inside the tech giants, presents a chilling account of companies that relish their coercive power-and aren't shy about using it.

The Many Lives of Michael Bloomberg by Eleanor Randolph
English | September 10, 2019 | ISBN: 1476772207, 9781476772226 | True EPUB | 480 pages | 22 MB
With unprecedented access, the veteran New York Times reporter and editorial writer who covered New York City and state politics offers a revealing portrait of one of the richest and famously private/public figures in the country. Business genius, inventor, innovator, ✅Publisher, philanthropist, activist, and sly wit Michael Bloomberg.

Michael Bloomberg's life sounds like an exaggerated version of The American Story, except his adventures are real.
From modest Jewish middle class (and Eagle Scout) to Harvard MBA to Solomon Brothers hotshot (where he gets "sent upstairs" and later fired) to creator of the machine that would change Wall Street and the rest of the world and make him a billionaire (a description by the author makes the invention clear to non-engineers).
Randolph's account of Bloomberg's life and time comes across almost like a novel, a quintessentially American story. She explains the "machine" he invented that gave and continues to give instant access to an infinite amount of information to bankers and investors on how, what, and where to invest and how it changed the financial universe.
Randolph recounts one day not long ago when the Bloomberg machine briefly blipped and the whole world's financial marketplace came to a halt.
Randolph recounts Mayor Bloomberg's vigorous approach to New York city's care - including his attempts at education reform, contract control, anti-smoking and anti-obesity campaigns, green climate control, and his political adventures with both aides and opponents.
After a surprising third term as mayor, Bloomberg returned to his business and doubles its already tremendous worth. The chapter that describes this is one of the most revealing of his temperament and energy and vision as well as how he spends his "private" time - private but convivial.
Bloomberg's philanthropies are education, Green Party, and anti-NRA. He is a moderate liberal in a time when that quality holds the future of the Democratic Party and the country to account.
Perhaps the public figure he resembles is Warren Buffett.

The Marjaeya By Sayyid Muhammad Saeed Al-Hakeem
2018 | 144 Pages | ISBN: 194339380X | EPUB | 1 MB
Discourse on the topic of Marjaeya, religious authority in Shia Islam, is a frequent topic between practicing Muslims. It is also a topic of intrigue to non-Muslims who are interested in learning more about the source of religious authority and guidance for Shia Muslims. Nonetheless, the greater focus of these discussions have been by Muslims themselves, particularly Shia Muslims. The original Arabic publication of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad Saeed Al-Hakeem, Al-Marjaeya wa Qadaya Ukhra, served as an excellent overview of the most pressing issues on the topic. Translating it to English for the benefit of English speakers was a must. This work will allow readers to deepen their understanding of the principles at stake and the driving forces that guide this leadership to guide others. Sayyid Al-Hakeem's wisdom and selflessness in the topic is evident throughout his writing. Though he is a religious authority in his own right, he focused his work on the experiences and leadership of those who came before him. He emphasized the lessons and values exemplified by our late scholars and jurists. Through their sacrifices and forethought, he answered the hard questions asked of him. It is one thing to read answers from a scholar who is speaking about the Marjaeya generally; it is an entirely different experience to receive the answer directly from the Marja himself.

Donald Prudlo, "The Martyred Inquisitor: The Life and Cult of Peter of Verona (†1252) "
English | ISBN: 075466256X | 2008 | 318 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Peter Martyr was one of the central Dominican saints of the thirteenth century, in some cases eclipsing Dominic himself. Born in Verona around 1206 to those with Cathar sympathies, he became a convert to Catholicism. As one of the first generations of Dominicans, he represents aspects of their primitive history both as a spellbinding preacher and as one of the earliest and most famous papal inquisitors. In 1252, shortly after his official appointment to the post of inquisitor for Lombardy, Peter was assassinated at the hands of a cabal of Milanese heretics. That there is no modern monograph on Peter represents a considerable lacuna in the study of medieval saints. This work therefore fills a very important gap, in both thirteenth century hagiographical studies, and studies of the interrelationship of heresy and imperial politics in the mid-thirteenth century. The first half of the book is a systematic study of the stages in the life, miracles and posthumous cult of Peter of Verona. Part One deals with many controversial issues of Peter's life, such as his role in the growth of the Dominican order and related confraternities in Lombardy and Tuscany, his status as papal inquisitor and his preaching. Part Two explores the cult of Peter Martyr. The brief time which elapsed between death and canonization makes Peter Martyr an especially interesting case in the field of cult study as for him, life led immediately to cult: a cult dominated by those who knew him personally. The second half of the book is a translation into English of the major primary sources concerning Peter. These will be of interest to students of papal canonization, the Dominican order, the Inquisition, hagiography, and local history.

The Maternal Gaze in the Gothic
by Sara Williams
English | 2025 | ISBN: 303170665X | 284 Pages | True ePUB | 4.1 MB

This monograph is an original project which Descriptions the trajectory of the maternal gaze as a convention in the Gothic. It offers new directions for Gothic studies by exposing and challenging a critical and cultural myopia towards the capabilities of maternal desire, and in doing so engages with a range of texts from the Romantic to contemporary literary and visual cultures to locate a tyrannical maternal gaze in the genre. Compelling a seismic shift in the perception of the genre as the embodiment of patriarchy and the sexually violent male gaze, this is a new and unexplored area of both the Gothic and criticism of the genre, which has historically privileged the Oedipal paternal tyrant/female victim dynamic established in the Romantic Gothics of Walpole and Radcliffe. The monograph fills significant gaps in the Gothic academic publishing market. It is the first overview of the maternal gaze in the Gothic, it offers in-depth studies of previously neglected authors and their works, and it fundamentally changes how we see the Gothic mother/figure and child, both as a single entity and discrete tropes. The Maternal Gaze in the Gothic examines how articulations of maternal visual tyrannies in the Gothic―including kidnapping; incarcerating; gaslighting, hurting and killing the child under the guises of protection―are ignored by both the Gothic critical heritage and also feminist gaze theory. This book is a must read for those interested in the Gothic and Feminism alike.

The Mathematical and Philosophical Legacy of Alexander Grothendieck
by Marco Panza, Daniele C. Struppa
English | 2025 | ISBN: 303168933X | 519 Pages | True ePUB | 29 MB

Alexander Grothendieck is often considered one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century (if not all time), and his unique vision continues to impact and inspire many fields and researchers today. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, this edited volume explores the profound influence his work and ideas have had not only on mathematics, but also on logic and philosophy. Chapters are written by international scholars, and many were inspired by talks given at the conference "Grothendieck, A Multifarious Giant" at Chapman University (May 24-28, 2022). Some chapters are written from a historical perspective and discuss the development of the main themes that characterized Grothendieck's work. Others are more mathematical in nature, analyzing and extending some of his more relevant and obscure results that are still not well understood. Philosophical implications and applications in logic are the subjects of other chapters. This volume will be of interest not only to mathematicians working in algebraic geometry, category theory, and other areas to which Grothendieck contributed, but also to philosophers, logicians, and historians of science.

The Meaning of Christian Brotherhood By Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
2013 | 115 Pages | ISBN: 0898704464 | EPUB | 1 MB
Written over three decades ago, Cardinal Ratzinger's profound treatise on the true meaning of Christian brotherhood is perhaps even more timely and important now as a clear statement on the biblical grounds for cooperation among believing Christians. In treating Christian brotherhood from the perspective of salvation history, Ratzinger opens up the meaning of both the Old and New Testament in this most essential area. After establishing the distinctively Christian sense of brotherhood (vis-À-vis Judaism, Hellenism, Stoicism, the Enlightenment, and Marxism), he shows how fraternal charity can only be perfected through God's fatherhood, Christ's divine sonship, and our brotherhood in Christ.

Robert J Meyer-Lee, "The Medieval Literary: Beyond Form"
English | ISBN: 1843844893 | 2018 | 288 pages | PDF | 32 MB
Essays studying the relationship between literariness and form in medieval texts.

The twenty-first century has witnessed the re-emergence of various kinds of literary formalism, and one project that characterizes most of these diverse formalisms is the effort to distinguish what is precisely literary about their objects of study. The presumed relation between form and the literary that this project presupposes, however, raises questions that still need to be addressed. What is it about form that produces the category of the literary? What precisely is literary about literary form? Can the literary be defined beyond form?
This volume explores these questions in the historical and geographical frame of late medieval Britain, across vaunted literary works such as the Franklin's Tale, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and the Towneley Shepherds' Plays, and presumed "non-literary" texts, such as books of hours. By studying texts from a period long priorto literary formalism - indeed, before any fully articulated theory of the literary - the essays gathered here aim to rethink the relationship between form and the literary.
Robert J. Meyer-Lee is Margaret W. PepperdeneDistinguished Scholar-in-Residence at Agnes Scott College; Catherine Sanok is an Associate Professor of English and Women's Studies at the University of Michigan.
Contributors: Anke Bernau, Jessica Brantley, Seeta Chaganti, Shannon Gayk, Kathryn Kerby-Fulton, Andrew Klein, Robert J. Meyer-Lee, Ingrid Nelson, Maura Nolan, Sarah Elliott Novacich, Catherine Sanok, Emily Steiner, Claire M. Waters.

Maria Kathryn Tomlinson, "The Menstrual Movement in the Media: Reducing stigma and tackling social inequalities "
English | ISBN: 3031721942 | 2025 | 341 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book investigates the impact of the mediation of menstruation and menstrual activism on young people's knowledge, attitudes, behaviours, and interpersonal relationships.

Since 2015, the menstrual movement has become increasingly visible on social media and in news media from across the globe. In Great Britain, the menstrual movement brings together a diverse group of activists who aim to reduce menstrual stigma and tackle menstrual inequities. By combining original interviews with 32 menstrual activists and focus groups with 77 young people (including women, men, and non-binary teenagers), this book offers an in-depth exploration of this movement and its impact. This book argues that menstrual stigma has decreased, awareness around related health and social issues has increased, and girls as well as other menstruating young people are feeling an increased sense of connection and solidarity with each other. Menstruation is shifting from a very private experience to one of collective concern. It is evident that social media, and, to some extent, news media, have played a key role in disseminating the discourses and aims of menstrual activists that have engendered some of these changes. Nevertheless, this book also examines how the media have negatively impacted young people and identifies further changes that are necessary for the achievement of gender equality.

The Merchant of Venice: The Activity of Patricians in the Late Middle Ages
by Jean-Claude Hocquet
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9004706917 | 318 Pages | PDF | 3.8 MB

For the first time, The Merchant of Venice looks at the place and role of the late medieval merchant nobility in the great international trade that took place in the world known at the time, from China and Asia to Flanders and England.
These merchants who travelled the world were also shipowners, sailors and bankers. They used modern banking techniques and credit based on bills of exchange held no secrets for them. They traded spices, porcelain, cotton and silk, dyes and glassware for drapery, wool and metals. These merchants used part of their profit to embellish their city, which amazed foreign visitors, and were always on the lookout for the latest discoveries and inventions. Venice was at the height of its power at the time, but it was also on the eve of its weakening.

E. Díaz León, "The Metaphysics of Gender "
English | ISBN: 1009500384 | 2025 | 78 pages | PDF | 1259 KB
What is the metaphysics of gender about? Metaphysics is the study of what there is and what it is like. On this conception, questions in the metaphysics of gender would be about the existence and nature of gender. That is, the metaphysics of gender would be about whether alleged gender categories such as being a man, a woman or an agender person are real features or kinds, and if so, what their nature is. In recent years, the metaphysics of gender has received a lot of attention and has shifted from being a rather marginal part of metaphysics to being a growing area of interest. Moreover, growing attention to the metaphysics of gender and the social domain have given rise to fruitful methodological questions about what metaphysics is about and what are the best methods to pursue metaphysical inquiries. This Element offers a survey of recent discussions of these questions.

The Meteorites: Encounters with Outer Space and Deep Time by Helen Gordon
English | February 6, 2025 | ISBN: 1800815344, 1800815352 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 0.4 MB
'The Meteorites conjures a small epiphany about our own place in the universe' The Sunday Times

'Stunning and riveting' Noreen Masud, author of A Flat Place
'Dazzling' Financial Times
From your window you can see the stars and distant planets: light years away, it's easy to think that our existences and theirs will never intersect. Yet meteorites - mysterious, irregular rocks of sometimes immense value - connect us with the vastness of the universe. They may have brought the first life to our planet, and today they still reveal extraordinary scientific insights.
Helen Gordon reveals the fascinating stories of fallen meteorites and the lives they've touched - from collectors to kings, scientists to farmers. She meets amateur astronomers and gem dealers, goes meteorite hunting across rooftops and learns what objects moving through space can tell us about the fragility of life on Earth.

The Middle East and North Africa (Global Secularity. A Sourcebook)
by Florian Zemmin, Neguin Yavari
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3111217175 | 499 Pages | PDF | 2.85 MB

This volume collects reflections on secularity from the Middle East and North Africa. To highlight proximate connections as well as resonances with debates elsewhere, it includes premodern contributions from the region as well as Jewish thought from Europe that have provided significant references for modern appropriations of secularity.
The texts, for the most part previously untranslated, reflect commonalities within the region as well as its great diversity. Thus, while Islam is a common reference for most of our authors, the selections point to its varied invocations in the interest of differing political ends. Others write from a Christian or Jewish perspective, or subscribe to non-religious intellectual traditions. They range from premodern Muslim jurisprudents and philosophers to Ottoman statesmen, Arab socialist and nationalist intellectuals of the interwar period, Iranian revolutionaries, Israeli novelists, and finally, post-secular intellectuals, lay and religious, predominantly from the former Islamic heartland: modern Arab states and Iran. Several introductions weave together the swathe of topics raised in the discussions, beginning with a schematic presentation of the concerns that undergird the volume's organization.

The Midrashic Impulse and the Contemporary Literary Response to Trauma (Lexington Studies in Jewish Literature) By Monica Osborne
2017 | 218 Pages | ISBN: 1498564909 | EPUB | 1 MB
Since the end of World War II we have witnessed countless artistic responses to the Holocaust, yet we remain unable to adequately address the atrocities. While Theodor Adorno later rescinded his comments on the barbaric nature of writing poetry after Auschwitz, The Midrashic Impulse and the Contemporary Literary Response to Trauma begins with the possibility that he was right-that his admonition against poetry warns against employing representational modes that transgress the boundaries of the ethical when it comes to the Holocaust. There is a language, other than the language of representation, with which we might speak authentically about such atrocities. This study explores what it means for the world of literature to renounce the language of representation and retain the language of witness. Drawing on the work of Emmanuel Levinas, Maurice Blanchot, Geoffrey Hartman, and others the book focuses on the increasing tendency of contemporary writers to rely on non-representational approaches to storytelling in the context of trauma. This tendency is named the "midrashic impulse" given its similarity to ancient rabbinic approaches to the silences of the Hebrew bible through the creation of Midrash.
