En 1971, Estados Unidos seguía sufriendo una gran agitación social, en gran parte como resultado de los cambios radicales introducidos por el Movimiento por los Derechos Civiles de la década anterior y la guerra de Vietnam, que contribuyó a desencadenar la contracultura. Un año antes, la Guardia Nacional había disparado contra unos estudiantes en Kent State, y las protestas seguían siendo frecuentes en todo el país.
Uno de los movimientos que se galvanizaron durante esta época fue en favor de los presos de la nación, que a menudo recibían un trato deplorable en las penitenciarías estatales y eran objeto de tratos racistas, pero eso, naturalmente, quedó en un segundo plano para la mayoría de los estadounidenses que seguían en libertad hasta el tristemente célebre motín de la prisión estatal de Attica, del 9 al 13 de septiembre de 1971. Mientras que el New York Times lo caracterizó de una manera más imparcial y lamentó las "muertes masivas que cuatro días de tensas negociaciones habían intentado evitar", los prisioneros fueron a menudo retratados como si adoptaran una postura heroica y justa contra el sistema. Quizá la representación más famosa del motín fue su conmemoración en la canción "Attica State" de John Lennon, en la que cantaba: "We're all mates with Attica State". A día de hoy, casi 45 años después, el motín sigue siendo polémico.
