Apple Zefelius Igrek, "Entropic Affirmation: On the Origins of Conflict in Change, Death, and Otherness"
English | ISBN: 1498567991 | 2018 | 166 pages | AZW3 | 724 KB
How do we conceptualize death when its very nature implies absence and nothingness? It is difficult to put into words precisely because we want our words to help us delineate the world around us, whereas the absence associated with death is the opposite of such delineation. For this reason, death might be said to represent a form of infinite otherness, something radically different from our usual, finite, anthropomorphic way of thinking about the world. With this in mind, Apple Igrek observes an unusual paradox. Some philosophers argue that we should be more open to that which is infinitely other (as with change or death) in the context of ethics, culture, and politics, while others critique this position since we cannot logically say what is more or less open to the immeasurable. It would therefore seem impossible to defend the relevance of what is infinite to ethics while nevertheless acknowledging the validity of the above-stated critique. If we want, in other words, to say that infinite otherness remains relevant to our social and ethical values, we will have a difficult time doing so unless we create a new methodological approach determining how it is possible for pure absence and alterity to play a role in the creation of those values. In this book Apple Igrek takes up the challenge of articulating this new approach explaining how something transcending our finite comprehension (as with death or never-ending change) is nonetheless essential for describing the construction of social values, especially in terms of describing their conflictual and agonistic tendencies.

Environmental History of Oceanic Islands: Natural and Human Impacts on the Vegetation of the Juan Fernández (Robinson Crusoe) Archipelago by Tod F. Stuessy
English | EPUB| 2020 | 345 Pages | ISBN : 303047870X | 143.8 MB
The Juan Fernández Archipelago is located in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile at 33° S latitude. Robinson Crusoe Island is 667 km from the continent and approximately four million years old; Alejandro Selkirk Island is an additional 181 km west and only one million years old. The natural impacts of subsidence and erosion have shaped the landscapes of these islands, resulting in progressive changes to their subtropical vegetation.

The older island has undergone more substantial changes, due to both natural causes and human impacts. After the discovery of Robinson Crusoe Island in 1574, people began cutting down forests for lumber to construct boats and homes, for firewood, and to make room for pastures. Domesticated plants and animals were introduced, some of which have since become feral or invasive, causing damage to the local vegetation. The wealth of historical records on these activities provides a detailed chronicle of how human beings use their environment for survival in a new ecosystem. This book offers an excellent case study on the impacts that people can have on the resources of an oceanic island.

The immune system has several effector cells that have main roles in health and diseases. Many people in all countries are suffering from a wide range of diseases that can be cured, controlled, or initiated by immune system cells. One of the main cells is the eosinophil, which has an important role in the immunopathology of several diseases (e.g., allergic reactions and asthma, hypersensitivity reactions, autoimmune diseases, and immunodeficiency diseases). The current book entitled Eosinophils and Their Role in Human Health and Disease focuses on the relationship between eosinophils and diseases, and other related problems. Chapters of the book present applicable and scientific data-based medical science and will be of benefit to all researchers in medical sciences. We hope these chapters can present new approaches to our knowledge of eosinophils.

Epidemics: Models and Data using R by Ottar N. Bjørnstad
English | EPUB | 2018 | 318 Pages | ISBN : 3319974866 | 134.9 MB
This book is designed to be a practical study in infectious disease dynamics. The book offers an easy to follow implementation and analysis of mathematical epidemiology. The book focuses on recent case studies in order to explore various conceptual, mathematical, and statistical issues. The dynamics of infectious diseases shows a wide diversity of pattern. Some have locally persistent chains-of-transmission, others persist spatially in 'consumer-resource metapopulations'. Some infections are prevalent among the young, some among the old and some are age-invariant.

Temporally, some diseases have little variation in prevalence, some have predictable seasonal shifts and others exhibit violent epidemics that may be regular or irregular in their timing. Models and 'models-with-data' have proved invaluable for understanding and predicting this diversity, and thence help improve intervention and control. Using mathematical models to understand infectious disease dynamics has a very rich history in epidemiology. The field has seen broad expansions of theories as well as a surge in real-life application of mathematics to dynamics and control of infectious disease. The chapters of Epidemics: Models and Data using R have been organized in a reasonably logical way: Chapters 1-10 is a mix and match of models, data and statistics pertaining to local disease dynamics; Chapters 11-13 pertains to spatial and spatiotemporal dynamics; Chapter 14 highlights similarities between the dynamics of infectious disease and parasitoid-host dynamics; Finally, Chapters 15 and 16 overview additional statistical methodology useful in studies of infectious disease dynamics. This book can be used as a guide for working with data, models and 'models-and-data' to understand epidemics and infectious disease dynamics in space and time.

Mezhlum A. Sumbatyan, "Equations of Mathematical Diffraction Theory "
English | ISBN: 0415308496 | 2004 | 312 pages | AZW3 | 1303 KB
Equations of Mathematical Diffraction Theory focuses on the comparative analysis and development of efficient analytical methods for solving equations of mathematical diffraction theory. Following an overview of some general properties of integral and differential operators in the context of the linear theory of diffraction processes, the authors provide estimates of the operator norms for various ranges of the wave number variation, and then examine the spectral properties of these operators. They also present a new analytical method for constructing asymptotic solutions of boundary integral equations in mathematical diffraction theory for the high-frequency case.

Clearly demonstrating the close connection between heuristic and rigorous methods in mathematical diffraction theory, this valuable book provides you with the differential and integral equations that can easily be used in practical applications.

Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott: The History of the British Explorers' Notorious Rivalry during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration by Charles River Editors
English | January 19, 2025 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DTJGX1DM | 119 pages | EPUB | 10 Mb
"We took risks, we knew we took them; things have come out against us, and therefore we have no cause for complaint, but bow to the will of Providence, determined still to do our best to the last...Had we lived, I should have had a tale to tell of the hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have stirred the heart of every Englishman. These rough notes and our dead bodies must tell the tale, but surely, surely, a great rich country like ours will see that those who are dependent on us are properly provided for." - Robert Falcon Scott

Exploration of Earth's wilderness areas became an international obsession in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as economically advantaged nations, in particular European powers and the United States were well equipped to mount exhaustive expeditions. From previously inaccessible forests and jungle country to the world's great mountain ranges, adventurers sought out the greatest extremes of climate and terrain in a race to plant the first flag where humanity struggled to survive. An earlier wave of explorers led to the opening of the New World, and early polar expeditions saw ancient ships of various nations sail along the coastlines of Greenland and within reach of the Arctic and Antarctic continents. Many 19th century figures approached the polar region with an eye to traversing it. Most notable among them was British explorer Sir James Clark Ross, who took the Erebus and the HMS Terror to the southernmost coastlines of the planet. Ross is probably the first explorer to realize that Antarctica was a continent and not just a large chain of islands, and he discovered the section of the shelf that was to become the Victoria Barrier. Asian nations also took part in Antarctic exploration.
More than any other country, Britain staked its national pride on being the first to reach the poles, as they would on penetrating the deep jungles of the Amazon and scaling the highest peaks of the Himalayas. Preservation of the British personality as an intrepid internationalist required such victories, but in the case of Arctic and Antarctic exploration, the empire fell short of the mark.
Nevertheless, some of the explorers who were involved became household names around the world, including British explorer Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton and Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. Perhaps the one that has become most closely associated with this period is Robert Falcon Scott. Widely referred to as "Scott of the Antarctic," Captain Scott became an icon of tenacity in the face of incredible adversity, and his final expedition to the South Pole lives on as an example of the nobility of the human spirit, even in the face of utter disaster. A monument to Scott's persistence still stands at Observation Point, inscribed with the last line of Tennyson's "Ulysses": "To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."
Inevitably, as time passed, modern historians further removed from the romanticization of the expeditions began to more closely (and objectively) scrutinize the explorers and their missions. However, in the case of Scott, that has only furthered his renown, because historians still have wildly different opinions of him, from his personality and leadership to the results of his missions, especially his ill-fated final one. Likewise, Shackleton's place in history is not the one he set out to make, but his extraordinary deeds have made his contributions to early exploration of Antarctica indelible. Despite the victor's wreath eventually going to another, Shackleton's name is essential to any discussion of Antarctic exploration, based on personal heroism more than logistical triumphs.

R. Parthasarathy, "Erotic Poems from the Sanskrit: An Anthology "
English | ISBN: 0231184395 | 2017 | 216 pages | AZW3 | 40 MB
Classical Sanskrit literature boasts an exquisite canon of poetry devoted to erotic love. In Erotic Poems from the Sanskrit, noted translator and scholar R. Parthasarathy curates a selection in a new verse translation that introduces readers to Sanskrit poetry in a modern English vernacular. The volume features works by seventy-two poets, including seven women poets and thirty-five anonymous poets, primarily composed between the fourth and seventeenth centuries. It includes a detailed introduction that guides readers through Sanskrit poetic forms and explains how to read and appreciate the poems in English.

Erotic Poems from the Sanskrit seeks to represent the breadth of Sanskrit poetry through the ages and to present a cohesive, thematically unified selection when read as a whole. The works in this volume depict licit and illicit love, speaking to the joys and sorrows of consummation and separation and a broader cultural celebration of the pleasures of the flesh. Often sexually explicit, they are replete with recurrent scenarios and striking tactile, visual, and olfactory images, whose resonance and use as motifs across eras are expertly explained. Parthasarathy shows that Sanskrit poets are our contemporaries despite the centuries that separate us, as they speak simply and passionately to a wide range of human experience.

Eschatology and Mission: The Triune God brings Life in the Past, Present, and for Eternity
by Pieter Verster
English | 2024 | ISBN: 9780906785416 | 164 Pages | True PDF | 1.68 MB

Eschatology and mission relate to some of the most important theological aspects. It is obvious that, presently, the theological discussion about eschatology raises new questions concerning its place regarding the implications for mission. Without a clear understanding of eschatology, missiology is unable to answer the questions of the world in which it finds itself at the moment.

Essential Analytic Heat Transfer (Synthesis Lectures on Mechanical Engineering) by C.Y. Wang
English | May 21, 2024 | ISBN: 3031590864 | 169 pages | MOBI | 19 Mb
This book discusses heat transfer, which is an important topic in all physical phenomena that involve thermal energy transport. The focus is on the three major means of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation. New materials, methods, and insights are presented that reflect the author's contributions in this area. After many years of experience in teaching and research, Dr. Wang has refined many useful analytic methods to treat thermo-fluid problems. Certain physical truths can only be revealed by analysis, and this book focuses on analytic means to solve heat transfer problems, rather than numerical and experimental methods. Although computer numerical solutions are becoming quite efficient, analytical solutions are still needed for numerical accuracy. This book is written in concise and understandable terms and is useful to practicing scientists and engineers and also serves as an ideal textbook for graduate students. For best results, readers should have completedundergraduate courses in differential equations, introductory heat transfer, and elementary fluid mechanics and should know how to use simple computer library functions such as integration and matrix inversion.

Essential Articles in Colorectal Surgery: Four Colleagues Discuss the Evidence and Their Experience
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031777441 | 372 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 4.4 MB
This book is an anthology of important articles that have influenced partner surgeons in a colorectal surgical practice. Following the citations of these articles, there is a formal critique by one individual partner, then the remaining partners add their perspective presented in the form of a conversation. The contributions will be constructed as a discussion but will also include references to additional contemporary articles pertaining to the topic at hand. At times, the conversation will result in complete agreement, but there are other times where there could be differences, which could be anticipated given the individual background, age and time in practice of each surgeon. Highlighted throughout are situations where the practice has changed for the better, as well as other situations that remain open for discussion. The breadth of colorectal surgery as a specialty is covered, including anorectal surgery, abdominal surgery, both open and minimally invasive, inclusive of both benign and malignant disease.

Essential Development Biology
by Professor Jonathan M.W. Slack and Professor Leslie Dale

English | 2021 | ISBN: 1119512859 | 547 pages | True PDF | 111.34 MB

ESSENTIAL DEVELOPMENTAL BIOLOGY
Discover the foundations of developmental biology with this up to date and focused resource from two leading experts
The newly revised Fourth Edition of Essential Developmental Biology delivers the fundamentals of the developmental biology of animals. Designed as a core text for undergraduate students in their first to fourth years, as well as graduate students in their first year, the book is suited to both biologically based and medically oriented courses. The distinguished authors presume no prior knowledge of development, animal structure, or histology.
The new edition incorporates modern single cell transcriptome sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9, as well as other methods for targeted genetic manipulation. The existing material has also been reorganized to provide for easier reading and learning for students. The book avoids discussions of history and experimental priority and emphasizes instead the modern advances in developmental biology. The authors have kept the text short and focused on the areas truly central to developmental biology. Readers will benefit from the inclusion of such topics as:
A thorough discussion of the groundwork of developmental biology, including developmental genetics, cell signaling and commitment, and cell and molecular biology techniques
An exploration of major model organisms, including Xenopus, the zebrafish, the chick, the mouse, the human, Drosophila, and Caenorhabditis elegans
A treatment of organogenesis, including postnatal development, and the development of the nervous system, mesodermal organs, endodermal organs, and imaginal discs in drosophila
A final section on growth, stem cell biology, evolution, and regeneration
Perfect for undergraduate students, especially those preparing to enter teaching or graduate studies in developmental biology, Essential Developmental Biology will also earn a place in the libraries of those in the pharmaceutical industry expected to be able to evaluate assays based on developmental systems.

James M. Henslin , "Essentials of Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach,] 13th Edition"
English | ISBN: 013473839X | 2018 | 608 pages | PDF | 87 MB
WELCOME TO SOCIOLOGY! ology since I was in my teens, and I hope you enjoy it, too. Sociology is fascinating because it is I've loved sociabout human behavior, and many of us find that it holds the key to understanding social life.

If you like to watch people and try to figure out why they do what they do, you will like sociology. Sociology pries open
the doors of society so you can see what goes on behind them.
Essentials of Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach stresses how profoundly our society and the groups to which we belong influence us. Social class, for example, sets us on a particular path in life. For some, the path leads to more education, more interesting jobs, higher income, and better health, but for others it leads to dropping out of school, dead-end jobs, poverty, and even a higher risk of illness and disease. These paths are so significant that they affect our chances of making it to our first birthday, as well as of getting in trouble with the police.
They even influence our satisfaction in marriage, the number of children we will have-and whether or not we will read
this book in the first place.
When I took my first course in sociology, I was "hooked." Seeing how marvelously my life had been affected by these larger social influences opened my eyes to a new world, one that has been fascinating to explore.
I hope that you will have this experience, too.
From how people become homeless to how they become presidents, from why people commit suicide to why women
are discriminated against in every society around the world- all are part of sociology. This breadth, in fact, is what makes
sociology so intriguing. We can place the sociological lens on broad features of society, such as social class, gender, and race- ethnicity, and then immediately turn our focus on the smaller, more intimate level. If we look at two people interacting- whether quarreling or kissing-we see how these broad features of society are being played out in their lives.
We aren't born with instincts. Nor do we come into this world with preconceived notions of what life should be like. At birth, we have no concepts of race-ethnicity, gender, age, or social class. We have no idea, for example, that people "ought" to act in certain ways because they are male or female. Yet we all learn such things as we grow up in our society. Uncovering the "hows" and the "whys" of this process is also part of what makes sociology so fascinating.
One of sociology's many pleasures is that as we study life in groups (which can be taken as a definition of sociology), whether those groups are in some far-off part of the world or in some nearby corner of our own society, we gain
new insights into who we are and how we got that way. As we see how their customs affect them, the effects of our own
society on us become more visible.
This book, then, can be part of an intellectual adventure, for it can lead you to a new way of looking at your social world-and in the process, help you to better understand both society and yourself.
I wish you the very best in college-and in your career afterward. It is my sincere desire that Essentials of Sociology:
A Down-to-Earth Approach will contribute to that success.
James M. Henslin
