After the Mongols rode across the steppes of Asia and Eastern Europe and steppe nomads like the Magyars and Cumans became major military and cultural forces in Europe, the steppe nomads became notorious as foreign marauders who rode the steppes looking for plunder and riches, but they rarely stayed long after they got what they wanted. In reality, these groups represented vanguards of a massive nomadic horde that grew in ferocity and effectiveness as the centuries passed, and they were far more than mindless barbarians interested in violence alone - in fact, contemporary sources reveal they were also interested in diplomacy and eventually integrated with their sedentary neighbors.
The actual history of these groups makes sense considering there were steppe nomads like them that lived in the region thousands of years earlier, back to around the time the Copper Age transitioned into the Bronze Age. The Fertile Crescent of Mesopotamia and the Levant are often referred to as the "cradle of civilization" because those lands hosted some of the world's earliest complex societies began, but several hundred miles to the north, equally important advances in civilization were happening at the same time. North of the Caucus Mountains near the shores of the Black Sea on the Ukrainian-Russian steppes, the ancestors of Indo-European peoples were domesticating horses, dogs, and inventing the wheel in the late 5th and early 4th millennia BCE. A number of different localized 'proto' Indo-European cultures formed at this time that eventually coalesced into the larger culture that is today known as the Yamnaya culture.
From about 3400-2600 BCE, the Yamnaya culture stretched from southeastern Europe into central Asia, greatly affecting other contemporary cultures in Europe and the Near East. The hallmarks of Yamnaya culture adopted by other cultures in the Near East and Europe include the use of metal tools and weapons. Yamnaya metal workers used arsenical bronze and even iron long before more organized cultures had formed in the Near East. The Yamnaya also independently domesticated animals and are best known for their domestication of horses, which played a major role in their culture and was later diffused to cultures in the Near East. The spread of the wheel, wagons, and possibly chariots were other Yamnaya innovations widely adopted across Eurasia in subsequent centuries.
Of course, the knowledge of the wheel and horse domestication helped the Yamnaya thrive across the inhospitable steppes of southern Europe and central Asia and eventually diffuse these important technologies across Eurasia. At the same time, however, the nature of their society prohibited the Yamnaya from having an even greater impact, because they were divided into different bands, communities, and sub-cultures that often developed more slowly and had less of a direct influence than those of centralized states.
In addition to inventing and disseminating new and important technologies, the Yamnaya were also responsible for directly and indirectly spreading Indo-European languages and specific genetic groups across Eurasia, which are legacies still found in the languages and people of many different regions.

Theater, War, and Memory in Crisis explores how French and Algerian dramatists have engaged with two traumatic events that continue to haunt France: the German occupation and Vichy government from 1940 to 1944 and the Algerian War from 1954 to 1962. John Ireland's investigation is guided by one central question: can theater take on issues of violence, war trauma, and conflicted memory in a fundamentally different way from archival forms of culture such as memoirs, narrative fiction, and film? Throughout the twentieth century, French cultural anthropologists, classicists, and social scientists repeatedly revisited links between archaic religious ritual, the practice of sacrifice, and Greek tragedy as attempts to understand, regulate, and mitigate the violence of human conflict and war. Ireland argues that contemporary French playwrights dealing with war trauma and contested memory were influenced by aspects of this research that foregrounded the core virtues of oral culture: presence and the present, the "here and now" that also regulate theatrical performance. That connection to the present encouraged dramatists and performance artists to make "live" historiographical contributions to reverberating, unresolved history but also revived perennial therapeutic values of oral culture that evolved in ancient Greece. The author at the centre of this study, Russian priest-theologian Nikolai Nikolaevich Afanas'ev, was perhaps the most influential thinker about the Church Russia has produced. In Aidan Nichols's careful evaluation, he emerges as a key figure in the rapprochement of Christian East and West, and most notably of the Orthodox and Catholic churches. Nichols illustrates how Afanas'ev has been influential in two key respects: first of all in his conviction that the Eucharist constitutes the foundation of the whole Church; and secondly in his contribution to an Orthodox understanding of the role of the Roman Church and bishop in the context of a united Church. Afanas'ev's achievements are seen to have continuing relevance in view of the inauguration of the Orthodox-Catholic dialogue at the monastery of St John on Patmos in 1980, and the importance of his thinking in terms of contemporary ecumenism becomes clear. It is to such a reappraisal that this book - concerned as it is with how Russian orthodoxy understands the Church - is devoted, in the hope of an eventual restoration of unity between the Orthodox of all the Russias and the see of Rome.

This book is the first comprehensive monograph on the Function Theory of Lexicography, which originated at the Aarhus School of Business (Aarhus University). Function Theory considers dictionaries to be tools that are constructed for assisting specific users with punctual needs in specific usage situations, e.g. communicative-oriented situations and cognitive-oriented situations. The book's main focus is on defending the independent academic status of lexicography and its corollary: The process of designing, compiling and updating (specialised) online dictionaries needs a theoretical framework that addresses general and specific aspects. The former are common to all types of information tools, the latter are mainly dependent on the media for which the information tool is constructed and their specific target users. This books offers both aspects and moves from the highest level of abstraction to very detailed aspects of lexicographic work, e.g. how to convert an originally-conceived polyfunctional online dictionary into several monofunctional usage-based ones.
The book illustrates that the theory and the methodology currently used by advocates of the Function Theory of Lexicography offers better results than other approaches and therefore makes its case for proposing the Function Theory for terminological/terminographical work.
