Rather than proposing the "ideal" city, Pearson maintains, Alberti presented a variety of possible cities, each one different from another. This book explores the ways in which Alberti sought to remedy urban problems, tracing key themes that manifest in De re aedificatoria.Chapters address Alberti's consideration of the city's possible destruction and the city's capacity to provide order despite its intrinsic instability; his assessment of a variety of political solutions to that instability; his affinity for the countryside and discussions of the virtues of the active versus the contemplative life; and his theories of aesthetics and beauty, in particular the belief that beauty may affect the soul of an enemy and thus preserve buildings from attack.

The ancient oasis of Salut, located on the desert's fringes in the heart of the Oman Peninsula, not far from the modern cities of Nizwa and Bahla, is distinguished by its rich archaeological landscape, which the Italian Mission to Oman has been investigating for more than ten years. The impressive Iron Age site of Husn Salut was the focus of the coeval settlement of the area, and in all likelihood it was also a key site at the regional level. Founded in the second half of the second millennium BC, Husn Salut was a place for public gatherings which also entailed a degree of rituality, an aspect enhanced by its monumental architecture, merging, as it does, with the location on top of a small hill which dominated the surrounding plain and made the site visible from the distance. Agricultural exploitation of the plain, made possible by a sophisticated water management, stood at the basis of the site' s subsistence. The site was largely abandoned after almost one millennium of continuous settlement, probably around 300 BC, with some evidence indicating a possible later date. While the investigation of the associated settlement of Qaryat Salut is just started, this book provides a general overview of the excavation at Husn Salut and its results, together with an exhaustive discussion of its material culture, with a specific attention paid to the pottery assemblage from selected, highly significant stratigraphic sequences. The site' s chronology is also specifically addressed, as an array of radiocarbon determinations, which, when considered together with the associated material culture, indicate its fundamental relevance in the discussion about the chrono-cultural phasing of the Early Iron Age of South East Arabia.

This study sits at the intersection of these recent interpretive trends. G. Geoffrey Harper uses insights from the fields of intertextuality, rhetorical criticism, and speech act theory to create a methodological framework, which he applies to three Leviticus pericopes. Chapters 11, 16, and 26 are examined in turn, and for each the assessment of potential parallels at lexical, syntactical, and conceptual levels reveals a complex web of interconnected allusion to the creation and Eden narratives of Genesis 1 and 2-3. Moreover, Harper probes the theological and rhetorical import of these intertextual connections and explores how Leviticus ought to be understood in its Pentateuchal context.

Throughout my research in the history of science I have been struck by the interest of many key scientists in the origins of scientific concepts and the process of creative thinking, particularly its intui- tive dimension. These scientists saw apparently disparate subjects as being related because the depth of their research had led them to consider the process of thinking itself. This book explores the con- nection of creative scientific thinking with the origins of scientific concepts and the ways in which this connection may provide a better understanding of scientific progress. Thus my concern here is with individuals, with the detailed structure of scientific change, and not with its macrostructure.

I have chosen to study Niels Bohr, Ludwig Boltzmann, Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg, and Henri Poincare. Through their work, the period 1900-1950 was one in which our customary notions of space, time, causality, and substance were transformed as never before. These philosopher-scientists were chiefly responsible for set- ting the intellectual milieu of the twentieth century.
I have developed the history, philosophy, psychology, and science contained herein with the goal of reaching the widest possible audi- ence. Every effort has been made to render this book self-contained. Parts I and II contain historical case studies of Bohr, Boltzmann, Einstein, Heisenberg, and Poincare from which emerge the philo- sophical-scientific currents of their times. The analyses strive to elucidate their styles of thinking, particularly their modes of mental imagery. These results are input for the cognitive psychological anal- yses in Part III that explore creative scientific thinking. Thus, in Part III, the history of science is used as a laboratory for cognitive psy- chology.
My recent book, Albert Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity: Emer- gence (1905) and Early Interpretation (1905-1911), probed the problem of creativity for a particular case, with emphasis on scientific and philosophical aspects. I concluded that book by suggesting the need for further investigation into the imagery in Albert Einstein's thought experiments. This is among the topics developed here. Like that book, this one concludes with problems for further work. That is the manner in which my essays often end, and that is the way it should be when the history of science is defined broadly enough to be considered part of the history of ideas
It is my hope that this book will serve as a catalyst for increasing interaction between cognitive psychologists and historians of sci- ence, so that we may amplify each other's intellectual strengths for a multidisciplinary approach to a fascinating problem in the history of ideas: creative scientific thinking.
