During the rise of the labor movement in the late nineteenth century, why were American workers unable to organize inclusive trade unions like those formed by their counterparts in the United Kingdom? Comparing American and British capitalism in the port cities of Baltimore and Liverpool and the steel cities of Pittsburgh and Sheffield, Rudi Batzell reveals that the answer lies in the legacies of slavery and entrenched structures of racial inequality. Strikebreaking succeeded more often in the United States because landless Black Americans were, out of economic desperation, more likely to become scabs and fracture the class solidarity of any union movement. Batzell shows, in short, how racism was and is deeply connected to class, migration, and capitalism in a global economy marked by slavery and empire. In emphasizing the geography of economic inequality, this book offers new clarity on the late-nineteenth-century successes and failures of working-class formation. Os moabitas e os edomitas eram apenas dois dos muitos grupos cananeus com os quais os hebreus lidaram, muitas vezes de forma violenta, mas havia dezenas de outros grupos cananeus, a maioria dos quais era identificada através dos nomes das respectivas cidades.
De facto, antes de os hebreus estabelecerem um reino e antes de os fenícios colonizarem grande parte do Mediterrâneo, os cananeus foram o grupo mais importante do Levante durante grande parte da Idade do Bronze e até ao início da Idade do Ferro. Embora os cananeus nunca tenham criado um estado-nação ou reino unificado, a sua importância no antigo Médio Oriente não pode ser subestimada. Foi, pelo menos em parte, devido ao facto de os cananeus não terem conseguido resistir aos seus vizinhos maiores e mais poderosos que a média das pessoas hoje em dia sabe muito pouco sobre a sua história, mas os estudos modernos revelaram que desenvolveram uma religião única que influenciou os povos não cananeus e continuou a ser praticada de alguma forma séculos depois de os cananeus terem deixado de ser um povo identificável. Além disso, durante o auge da Idade do Bronze, os cananeus forneceram recursos importantes aos impérios egípcio e hitita e desempenharam um papel fundamental no jogo geopolítico de xadrez entre estes dois reinos. Como muitos indivíduos e impérios dessa região, a perceção negativa da antiga cultura assíria foi transmitida através de relatos bíblicos e, independentemente da exatidão dos relatos bíblicos de certos acontecimentos, os assírios desempenharam certamente o papel de adversários dos israelitas. De facto, a Assíria (Sinar na Bíblia) e os assírios desempenham um papel importante em vários livros do Antigo Testamento e são mencionados pela primeira vez no livro do Génesis: "E o princípio do seu reino foi Babel e Ereque, e Acade e Calné, na terra de Sinar. Embora os relatos bíblicos sobre os assírios estejam entre os mais interessantes e sejam muitas vezes corroborados por outras fontes históricas, os assírios eram muito mais do que simples inimigos dos israelitas e bandidos brutais. A investigação histórica sobre a antiga cultura assíria revela que, apesar de terem sido os maiores guerreiros do seu tempo, eram também altamente letrados, diplomáticos e excelentes comerciantes que registaram a sua história, rituais religiosos e crenças com grande pormenor. Um dos mais importantes avanços na tecnologia militar associados à Primeira Guerra Mundial, e certamente aquele que continua a captar a imaginação do público, foi a introdução de uma máquina de guerra que veio a dominar a face das batalhas terrestres durante a maior parte do século XX: o tanque. Como conceito, não era revolucionário; de facto, remetia para a antiguidade clássica e para a Idade Média, como os aríetes cobertos e os testudos que tinham feito aparições frequentes nos antigos campos de batalha. Essencialmente, foi concebido para resolver o antigo problema de proteger a infantaria dos projécteis inimigos, mantendo a sua mobilidade.
O desenvolvimento da artilharia moderna e das metralhadoras, bem como o impasse gerado pelas fortes fortificações e entrincheiramentos, tinham dificultado a mobilidade da infantaria e da cavalaria, deixando-as também totalmente vulneráveis ao poder de fogo defensivo. Uma vez que eram incapazes de responder da mesma forma, o tanque foi concebido para colmatar essa lacuna. A blindagem do tanque, suficientemente espessa para resistir à fragmentação lateral dos projécteis explosivos (embora não aos ataques diretos), também o tornava virtualmente invulnerável ao fogo das espingardas e metralhadoras inimigas, e o seu grande piso significava que podia transpor trincheiras que, no mínimo, teriam atrasado substancialmente a infantaria. Quanto aos emaranhados de arame farpado e aos obstáculos que atrasavam gravemente a infantaria e a expunham ao fogo inimigo, os tanques podiam simplesmente atravessá-los.
Antes da Primeira Guerra Mundial, vários exércitos haviam experimentado o conceito de tanque, mas os avanços nas técnicas metalúrgicas (que permitiram a construção de uma blindagem sólida e relativamente leve) e na engenharia mecânica (que permitiram a construção de um motor potente capaz de impulsionar tal massa) tornaram finalmente possível o seu desenvolvimento e utilização, bem como o desenvolvimento de lagartas (inicialmente para utilização agrícola em tractores).
