"My Name Is Not Tom": The Life of the Reverend Josiah Henson by Susan Cooke Soderberg
English | April 2nd, 2025 | ISBN: 164712610X | 248 pages | True EPUB | 16.53 MB
The first biography to rescue the true story of Josiah Henson, restoring to history his role in the Underground Railroad

Josiah Henson led a fascinating life-from the plantation fields of Maryland to the Georgetown Market to the plantations of Kentucky to escaping to freedom in Canada to being introduced to the Queen in England. Born enslaved, Henson eventually escaped and became a respected minister and famed secular leader.
"My Name Is Not Tom" is a biography of Josiah Henson, the man catapulted into fame after Harriet Beecher Stowe noted that certain events in his life partially influenced the development of her fictional character Uncle Tom. While previous biographies have relied heavily on Henson's four autobiographies, which replicated the myth that he was the sole inspiration for Stowe's character, "My Name Is Not Tom" uses new primary source research to fill in the untold parts of his extraordinary life and examine his views of slavery and morality, which changed substantially over the course of his life.

Mythologie in der antiken Welt : Die Geschichte der mythologischen Geschichten und Rituale im Altertum (German Edition) by Charles River Editors
German | February 28, 2025 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DYWPYT1N | EPUB | 68 Mb

Names, Naming, and the Law: Onomastics, Identity, Power, and Policy
by I. M. Nick
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032556412 | 267 Pages | True ePUB | 0.66 MB

Across many social and commercial domains, governments regulate the official names used to identify individuals, groups, places, companies & products, and even diseases. This innovative volume investigates the relationship between names and the law, with its significant implications for identity (individual, familial, race, ethnicity, gender, species, brand & product industry, etc.) and status (social, scientific, economic, and political).
I. M. Nick introduces the state of the art on this interdisciplinary topic¾ providing a diachronic and synchronic view of onomastics and the law¾ and expert contributors examine seminal Anglo-American legal cases to demonstrate how name polices relate to broader questions of power, privilege, and politics. Each chapter offers an overview of key issues in onomastics and language policy across multiple geo-cultural contexts, and applies the interdisciplinary insights to real-world policies.
This book is a valuable resource for scholars of legal linguistics, forensic linguistics, onomastics, language policy, and cultural studies.

Paul Carter, "Naming No Man's Land: Postcolonial Toponymies "
English | ISBN: 3031606876 | 2024 | 270 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book is a practice-based exploration of the politics and poetics of replacing colonial placenames with Indigenous ones. From a horizon of case-studies in Western Australia, the study develops a lively dialogue with international critical toponymy theory and with older etymological approaches to place renaming and legitimation. The author shows how renaming raises fundamental questions of meaning, reference and cross-cultural equivalence.

Recognising the 'sense of place' values that accrue to placenames, Carter argues that placenames have a creative as well as discursive function: they are talking points that bring places into being. For this reason, to decolonize toponymy involves a postcolonial poetics. Naming No Man's Land argues for a practical, community-shaped toponymic poetics that escapes from the binarist logic of imposition/erasure, showing that, when the principle that 'places are made after their stories' is followed, new creative mechanisms of co-existence can emerge. A must read for anyone engaged in postcolonial studies, creativity studies, cultural geography, sociolinguistics, historical ethnography, eco-criticism, environmental humanities, (Australian) Aboriginal studies, and related disciplines.

Narrating Heritage: Rights, Abuses and Cultural Resistance
by Veysel Apaydin
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1350334634 | 239 Pages | True PDF | 2.58 MB

Narrating Heritage critically examines the links among heritage, rights and social justice. This book brings important original ethnographic research and unique case studies together in a coherent and cohesive way to examine patterns and differences of approaches to heritage. It exposes discourses of the uses and abuses of heritage, and provides narratives of persistence, demonstrating the importance of heritage in securing human rights and social justice. Drawing on over ten years of research and ethnographic fieldwork based on six complex case studies from Turkey and comparing them with case studies from across the world, the book explores a variety of social, political, cultural and economic heritage discourses, making explicit the relationship between cultural and natural heritage. This book expands on these discourses by examining the role of violence in heritage, expanding on the concepts of both direct and slow violence. It situates heritage discourse within the sphere of human rights and lays out redistribution, recognition and representation as dimensions of social justice in a heritage context. The case studies in this volume explore multiple themes, from the links between cultural performance and the construction of collective identity and sense of belonging, to the roles of education, learning about other cultures and nationalist use of education. They also discuss the relationship between construction of heritage, space, and access and exclusion, as well as the impact of authoritarianism and heavy neoliberal policies on heritage making.

Natural and Artificial Bodies in Early Modern England: Literature, Natural Philosophy, Objects
by Alvin Snider
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1138949876 | 226 Pages | True ePUB | 1.12 MB

This book brings contemporary ways of reconceptualizing the human relationship to things into conversation with seventeenth-century writing, exploring how the literature of the period intersected with changing understandings of the conceptual structure of matter and how human beings might reconfigure their place in a web of nonhuman relations. Focusing on texts that cross the frontier between literature and science, Snider recovers the material and body worlds of seventeenth-century culture as treated in poetry, natural philosophy, medical treatises, comedy, and prose fiction. He shows how a range of writers understood and theorized "matter," "bodies," and "spirits" as characters in complex and sometimes bizarre scenarios involving human relationships to the phenomenal world. The logic that made matter subject to uniform theorizing facilitated a crossing of boundaries between the human and nonhuman and became a persistent figure of explanation at the time when distinctions between the natural and the artificial were undergoing reformulation.

Karin Murris, "Navigating the Postqualitative, New Materialist and Critical Posthumanist Terrain Across Disciplines "
English | ISBN: 0367484722 | 2020 | 196 pages | EPUB, PDF | 17 MB + 5 MB
Navigating the Postqualitative, New Materialist and Critical Posthumanist Terrain Across Disciplines is an accessible introductory guide to theories, paradigm shifts and key concepts in postqualitative, new materialist and critical posthumanist research.

Supported by its own website, this first book in a larger series is an essential companion to the primary texts and original sources of the theorists discussed in this and other books in the series. Disrupting the theory/practice divide, the book offers a postqualitative reimagining of traditional research processes. In doing so, it guides readers through the contestation of binaries, innovative concepts, and the practical provocations that make up the postqualitative terrain. It orients the researcher in the ontological re-turn also by considering Indigenous knowledges, African, Eastern and young children's philosophies. The style itself is postqualitative through diffractive engagements by the authors and the website includes some examples of the practical provocations described in the book that give an imaginary of how postqualitative research can be taught and enacted.

Negative Geographies : Exploring the Politics of Limits By David Bissell; Mitch Rose; Paul Harrison
2021 | 318 Pages | ISBN: 149622678X | EPUB | 1 MB
Negative Geographies is the first edited collection to chart the political, conceptual, and ethical consequences of how the underexplored problem of the negative might be posed for contemporary cultural geography. Using a variety of case studies and empirical investigations, these chapters consider how the negative, through annihilations, gaps, ruptures, and tears, can work within or against the terms of affirmationism. The collection opens up new avenues through which key problems of cultural geography might be differently posed and points to the ways that it might be possible and desirable to think, theorize, and exemplify negation.

Scott Johnson, "Neoconstructivism: The New Science of Cognitive Development"
English | 2009 | pages: 382 | ISBN: 0195331052 | PDF | 4,8 mb
Arguments over the developmental origins of human knowledge are ancient, founded in the writings of Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, and Kant. They have also persisted long enough to become a core area of inquiry in cognitive and developmental science. Empirical contributions to these debates, however, appeared only in the last century, when Jean Piaget offered the first viable theory of knowledge acquisition that centered on the great themes discussed by Kant: object, space, time, and causality. The essence of Piaget's theory is constructivism: The building of concepts from simpler perceptual and cognitive precursors, in particular from experience gained through manual behaviors and observation.

The constructivist view was disputed by a generation of researchers dedicated to the idea of the "competent infant," endowed with knowledge (say, of permanent objects) that emerged prior to facile manual behaviors. Taking this possibility further, it has been proposed that many fundamental cognitive mechanisms - reasoning, event prediction, decision-making, hypothesis testing, and deduction - operate independently of all experience, and are, in this sense, innate. The competent-infant view has an intuitive appeal, attested to by its widespread popularity, and it enjoys a kind of parsimony: It avoids the supposed philosophical pitfall posed by having to account for novel forms of knowledge in inductive learners. But this view leaves unaddressed a vital challenge: to understand the mechanisms by which new knowledge arises.
This challenge has now been met. The neoconstructivist approach is rooted in Piaget's constructivist emphasis on developmental mechanisms, yet also reflects modern advances in our understanding of learning mechanisms, cortical development, and modeling. This book brings together, for the first time, theoretical views that embrace computational models and developmental neurobiology, and emphasize the interplay of time, experience, and cortical architecture to explain emergent knowledge, with an empirical line of research identifying a set of general-purpose sensory, perceptual, and learning mechanisms that guide knowledge acquisition across different domains and through development.

Donald Kagan, "New History of the Peloponnesian War"
English | ASIN : B00B18ST30 | 2013 | 2155 pages | PDF | 169 MB
A New History of the Peloponnesian War is an ebook-only omnibus edition that includes all four volumes of Donald Kagan's acclaimed account of the war between Athens and Sparta (431-404 B.C.): The Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, The Archidamian War, The Peace of Nicias and the Sicilian Expedition, and The Fall of the Athenian Empire. Reviewing the four-volume set in The New Yorker, George Steiner wrote, "The temptation to acclaim Kagan's four volumes as the foremost work of history produced in North America in the twentieth century is vivid. . . . Here is an achievement that not only honors the criteria of dispassion and of unstinting scruple which mark the best of modern historicism but honors its readers."

All four volumes are also sold separately as both print books and ebooks.

Next Generation Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules: From Stereochemistry to Photochemistry and Molecular Devices by Samantha Jenkins, Steven Robert Kirk
English | July 2, 2023 | ISBN: 9819903289 | 238 pages | MOBI | 27 Mb
This book begins by providing a simplified version of the computational quantum chemistry sufficient to calculate the wavefunctions that are the basic input of NG-QTAIM. Enough basic (scalar) QTAIM theory is provided to understand the later chapters. In addition, our developments of scalar QTAIM are presented and activities at various levels of difficulty are provided for the readership to facilitate understanding.

The topological origins of Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM) before explaining the highlights and consequences of the developments of Next-Generation QTAIM (NG-QTAIM) that is a 3-D vector-based realization of QTAIM. The book compiles all developments and extensions of Next-Generation QTAIM in one place for easy reference for those engaged in theoretical/computational chemistry. Essential insights into molecular switch functioning not available from the energy barrier or any scalar measures are presented along with a new measure toassess the efficiency of rotary molecular motors. The book also discusses how the treatment of external forces such as electric fields and laser irradiation is included in NG-QTAIM. This book benefits theoretical/computational chemists/physics/engineers, students (graduate and undergraduate) and chemical/pharmaceutical industry researchers who carry out chemical computations in universities and industries.
Where appropriate, Target Learning Outcomes and Further Reading are provided along with a list of the scientific goals to be addressed in addition to a glossary table in the summary sections. Where applicable each chapter concludes by outlining benefits, limitations and suggestions for further investigations.
All our NG-QTAIM publications are available as pre-prints in the form of .pdf files along with the corresponding supplementary materials at our BEACON websitewww.beaconresearch.org.

Edgar Landgraf, "Nietzsche's Posthumanism "
English | ISBN: 1517915333 | 2023 | 290 pages | PDF | 13 MB
A timely and trenchant commentary on the centrality of Nietzsche's thought for our time

While many posthumanists claim Nietzsche as one of their own, rarely do they engage his philosophy in any real depth. Nietzsche's Posthumanism addresses this need by exploring the continuities and disagreements between Nietzsche's philosophy and contemporary posthumanism. Focusing specifically on Nietzsche's reception of the life sciences of his day and his reflections on technology-research areas as central to Nietzsche's work as they are to posthumanism-Edgar Landgraf provides fresh readings of Nietzsche and a critique of post- and transhumanist philosophies.
