The Usual Desire to Kill: A Novel by Camilla Barnes
English | April 1, 2025 | ISBN: 1668062836 | True EPUB | 256 pages | 3.4 MB
An often hilarious, surprisingly moving portrait of a long-married couple, seen through the eyes of their wickedly observant daughter-for fans of A Man Called Ove and The Royal Tenenbaums.

Miranda's parents live in a dilapidated house in rural France that they share with two llamas, eight ducks, five chickens, two cats, and a freezer full of food dating back to 1983.
Miranda's father is a retired professor of philosophy who never loses an argument. Miranda's mother likes to bring conversation back to "the War," although she was born after it ended. Married for fifty years, they are uncommonly set in their ways. Miranda plays the role of translator when she visits, communicating the desires or complaints of one parent to the other and then venting her frustration to her sister and her daughter. At the end of a visit, she reports "the usual desire to kill."
This wry, propulsive story about a singularly eccentric family and the sibling rivalry, generational divides, and long-buried secrets that shape them, is a glorious debut novel from a seasoned playwright with immense empathy and a flair for dialogue.

The V1 Flying Bomb Campaign 1944-1945: The Doodlebug Summer and After
by Jan Gore
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1399065815 | 224 Pages | True ePUB | 2.13 MB

"...provides a good recap of the bombardments..." -Historical Miniatures Gaming Society
In this new study, Jan Gore assesses the success of the V1 campaign. The background to the development of the V1 will be examined, from the initial references to a mystery weapon to the gradual realisation by the British that the Germans were planning both a flying bomb (V1) and a long range rocket (V2).
Once the first V1 sites were identified, the British began a strategic bombing campaign, later joined by the Americans. However, as the Normandy landings became imminent in June 1944, Hitler realised he had nothing to lose by delaying his vengeance attacks. A week after D-Day, the first V1s began to reach England. The attacks swiftly intensified.
It was a very different campaign from those before. The pilotless planes could be produced cheaply and there was no need to put expensively-trained pilots at risk. The planes could be launched by day or night, whatever the weather. They were true terror weapons, as the first-hand accounts of those who lived through the attacks make clear; there was very little notice that a doodlebug explosion was imminent and so it was almost impossible to take cover.
The book describes the first weekend of the attacks with the bombing of the Guards' Chapel, the evacuation programme which followed, and the UK's defence strategies. It goes on to discuss the second phase of the attacks, including the planned bombing of Manchester, and the third phase of the campaign, where V1s were ground-launched from the Netherlands.

The Vanishing at Smokestack Hollow: A Missing Family, a Desperate Plan, an Unsolved Mystery
by Jake Anderson
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0806542470 | 336 Pages | True ePUB | 1.53 MB

An immersive descent into one of the most mysterious and bizarre unsolved cases of this century. Through extensive research, personal interviews, and exclusive evidence, Anderson unearths the truth behind the disappearance of a loving, plucky family that was gradually worn down, warped-by pain and pathology-into a radicalized cell.
"There's dark stuff up there, sir. You know that, right? Cults and such." That's what Starlet Jamison told the Sheriff after her son and his family went missing.
On October 8th, 2009, Bobby Jamison, his wife Sherilynn, and their six-year-old daughter Madyson, set off for a drive from their home in Eufaula, Oklahoma, to the nearby Sans Bois Mountains. They didn't return that day, or the next. A week later, their truck was found abandoned on a mountain road. Inside was their dog, malnourished but alive, the family's cell phones, wallets, and $32,000 in cash.
The ensuing eight-month search was the largest in Oklahoma history, but it yielded little evidence. Online, bloggers and web sleuths put forth dozens of theories, fueled by the Jamisons' strange, trancelike behavior on a CCTV video. Some claimed the family was abducted by white supremacists or a religious cult. In 2013, there was a tragic break in the case, when deer hunters stumbled upon the skeletal remains of two adults and a child in the Smokestack Hollow area of Panola Mountain. Forensic testing confirmed the Jamisons' identities.
But the mystery was only beginning. Had the Jamisons been planning to abandon their lives and raise Madyson alone in the wilderness-and if so, why? What happened to the briefcase and handgun that Sheryilynn was seen putting into the car? And why were no arrests ever made?
Investigative journalist Jake Anderson draws on police notes, interviews, and exclusive evidence to piece together the Jamisons' last days and weeks, weaving together startling material with his own personal insights. The story is one of dark, paranoid obsessions, but also of real malevolent forces residing in those shadowy mountains-and a compulsively readable account of a true murder mystery whose chilling impact continues to be felt.

The Women of Rendezvous: A Transatlantic Story of Family and Slavery
by Jenny Shaw
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1469682753 | 280 Pages | True ePUB | 12 MB

The Women of Rendezvous is a dramatic transatlantic story about five women who birthed children by the same prominent Barbados politician and enslaver. Two of the women were his wives, two he enslaved, and one was a servant in his household. All were determined to make their way in a world that vastly and differentially circumscribed their life choices. From a Barbados plantation to the center of England's empire in London, Hester Tomkyns, Frances Knights, Susannah Mingo, Elizabeth Ashcroft, and Dorothy Spendlove built remarkable lives for themselves and their children in spite of, not because of, the man who linked them together.
Mining seventeenth- and eighteenth-century court records, deeds, wills, church registers, and estate inventories, Jenny Shaw centers the experiences of the women and their children, intertwining the microlevel relationships of family and the macrolevel political machinations of empire to show how white supremacy and racism developed in England and the colonies. Shaw also explores England's first slave society in North America, provides a glimpse into Black Britain long before the Windrush generation of the twentieth century, and demonstrates that England itself was a society with slaves in the early modern era.

J. Jordan, "The Word of a Woman?: Police, Rape and Belief"
English | 2004 | pages: 287 | ISBN: 1403921695, 1349515523 | PDF | 0,9 mb
The notion that women lie about rape is a prevalent belief with pervasive influence. This book is unique in combining police file data with interviews obtained from both rape survivors and detectives in order to critically explore how this belief affects police officers' responses to women who report rape. Examination of this material is located within a broader analysis of the historical and socio-cultural environment, and illustrates how rape investigations continue to be conducted within the context of pervasive beliefs and stereotypes regarding both the nature of rape and the nature of women.

Maja Kominko, "The World of Kosmas"
English | ISBN: 1108816371 | 2020 | 424 pages | PDF | 64 MB
The Christian Topography is the only extant Greek treatise both written and illustrated in the sixth century, although known only through later copies. Taking inspiration from East Syrian exegesis, the treatise transforms the heritage of classical cosmography into a new, Christian image of the universe. Because images are an inherent part of the argument, the Christian Topography offers a unique insight into how the relationship between word and image was constructed and how the potential of these two media was understood. Until now, however, the text and illustrations have almost always been discussed separately. Consequently the unity of the work has been disrupted and our understanding of the treatise distorted. Taking into consideration both the text and the miniatures, this book seeks to further our understanding of the Christian Topography and its intellectual milieu, and to clarify the role of the images in late antique polemics.

The Younger Dryas Period: The History of the Earth's Drastic Climate Change at the End of the Pleistocene Era by Charles River Editors
English | February 10, 2025 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DWV8LFNV | 78 pages | EPUB | 1.35 Mb
As a basic definition, it may be said that an Ice Age is simply a period of time during which thick ice sheets cover vast areas of land. These sheets have advanced and retreated, at times taking over the entire planet, and conversely disappearing nearly altogether. Glacial ice formed by this regularly occurring process does not sit in a state of inertia, but moves dynamically, reshaping the geological features of the continents. Again, the time frame for glacial movement is far longer than any involving human activity, so close attention must be paid in order to correctly measure and interpret it for the modern day.

From about 12,900 to 11,700 before present (BP), near Ice Age conditions returned to the Northern Hemisphere of the planet. It was a sudden shift from the warm temperatures that had prevailed for nearly 2,000 years. This period is referred to by archaeologists, geologists, and earth scientists as the Greenland Stadial, but it is more commonly known as the Younger Dryas. The Younger Dryas marked the end of the last glacial period, the end of the Pleistocene Era, and the beginning of the Holocene Era, which is the current era. It was a period of great change, when climate change happened quite quickly, directly affecting the flora, fauna, and humans of the Northern Hemisphere in the process. The impact on the human populations was perhaps most important because, in some places, it virtually destroyed emerging cultures, while in other places, it might have propelled humans to develop new survival traits and technologies later used to move humanity into the Neolithic era. Although scholars now know quite a bit about the Younger Dryas, many elements of it are still debated. Other aspects serve as a predictor of what humans can expect in the future.
Extensive research about the origins and possibly the causes of the Younger Dryas will help modern experts understand more about climate change. The term "climate change" has become somewhat loaded and controversial in many contexts of modern discourse, but the reality is that the Earth's climate is constantly changing due to a number of factors. Periods of warming and cooling were routine in humanity's prehistoric past, and they have even been documented in the historical era, well before modern times. Knowledge of the processes leading to the Younger Dryas will not prevent climate change in the future, although it will help modern populations prepare for it better. In-depth research of the Younger Dryas will also help modern scholars learn about how climate change affects human populations. Although the Earth was far less populated during the Younger Dryas, human populations were growing and on the cusp of entering the Neolithic Period in some locations. Understanding how some of these populations reacted to the Younger Dryas will help scholars know more about the transition into the Neolithic Period, sometimes referred to as the "Neolithic Revolution," and how the survival skills humans learned during the period laid the groundwork for some of the earliest human civilizations.
There is, however, still plenty of information about the Younger Dryas that remains unknown or open to debate. Not all scholars agree on the dates of the Younger Dryas or how long it lasted. Even more controversial are the alternate theories about what caused the Younger Dryas and the effect it had on the Northern Hemisphere's bio-populations. This book examines the background of the Younger Dryas, its effects on bio-populations, and how it contributed to the emergence of the Neolithic Era. Alternative theories will be examined and compared to more standard ideas currently prevailing in academia.

The κ-Statistics Approach to Income Distribution Analysis
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1009446355 | 72 Pages | PDF (True) | 1.5 MB
This Element presents the κ-generalized distribution, a statistical model tailored for the analysis of income distribution. Developed over years of collaborative, multidisciplinary research, it clarifies the statistical properties of the model, assesses its empirical validity and compares its effectiveness with other parametric models. It also presents formulas for calculating inequality indices within the κ-generalized framework, including the widely used Gini coefficient and the relatively lesser-known Zanardi index of Lorenz curve asymmetry. Through empirical illustrations, the Element criticizes the conventional application of the Gini index, pointing out its inadequacy in capturing the full spectrum of inequality characteristics. Instead, it advocates the adoption of the Zanardi index, accentuating its ability to capture the inherent heterogeneity and asymmetry in income distributions.

David Lonsdale, "Theological and Philosophical Explorations of the Call of Literature: Power of the Word VI "
English | ISBN: 1032387165 | 2025 | 266 pages | PDF | 10 MB
This book explores the 'call' of literature, for both writers and their audiences, and reflects on how literary works have informed and drawn from - and continue to inform and draw from - theology, philosophy and sacred scripture. Key questions addressed include the following: How do creative writers and critics conceive this call? What does it mean to speak of a 'vocation' to write and what have theologians and philosophers got to say on the matter? Is the spirit of literature always or necessarily an 'angel of light'? Or is the call of literature a siren song? The essays by an international and interdisciplinary range of contributors discuss the work and testimony of writers from William Blake, Gerard Manley Hopkins and R.S. Thomas to James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and Michel Houellebecq. Also examined are the ideas and influence of figures such as John Henry Newman, who wrote that the importance of literature stems from our very nature and God-given powers as human beings, especially language. This latest volume from The Power of the Word Project will be of interest to scholars from theology, philosophy and literature.

Erik Schilling, "Theorizing Literature: Literary Theory in Contemporary Novels - and Their Analysis"
English | ISBN: 3031533259 | 2024 | 220 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
This book offers an analytical model for the interpretation of theory-informed novels - American, English, French, German, and Italian - from the past 50 years. Works discussed include Laurent Binet's The 7th Function of Language, Italo Calvino's If on a Winter's Night a Traveler, Patricia Duncker's Hallucinating Foucault, Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum, David Lodge's Small World, and Juli Zeh's Dark Matter. Erik Schilling shows how these works not only incorporate elements of theory in playful, intertextual ways, but productively work with theory - for instance, by elaborating the complexities of the roles of author and reader or by confronting the quest for meaning with an infinite network of signs. Schilling argues that the novels do not merely adopt theory; they create theory - and this theorizing literature requires new forms of interpretation.

Aditya Misra, "Theorizing the Superhero: Performativity and Politics"
English | ISBN: 3031629329 | 2024 | 200 pages | EPUB | 14 MB
This book uses contemporary continental philosophy to develop an alternative theory of the superhero to the one currently offered by the comic book industry and comic book studies. Studying superheroes from South Asian pop culture, this book questions the definition of the superhero and the allegedly sacrosanct nature of its origin and identity in comic books. This book looks at the superhero as a performative figure and explores how the superheroic imagination opens up diverse modes of creative thinking. Superheroes studied in this book include Narayan Debnath's Bantul the Great (comics), Premendra Mitra's Ghanashyam Das or Ghanada (Tall Tale), Satyajit Ray's Professor Trilokeswar Shonku (science fiction/fantasy fiction), and one of the nine gems of Emperor Akbar's court, Raja Birbar or Birbal (mediaeval Indian history). By virtue of perpetual reconfiguration of its elements, the book argues, the concept of the superhero makes itself 'always new' and it is always already 'open onto elsewhere'.

Aditya Misra, "Theorizing the Superhero: Performativity and Politics"
English | ISBN: 3031629329 | 2024 | 200 pages | PDF | 4 MB

This Is Rhythm: Ella Jenkins, Children's Music, and the Long Civil Rights Movement by Gayle F. Wald
English | April 10, 2025 | ISBN: 0226824810 | 320 pages | EPUB | 2.68 Mb
The remarkable life story of Ella Jenkins, "The First Lady of Children's Music."

Ella Jenkins was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. Her songs "You'll Sing a Song and I'll Sing a Song" and "Who Fed the Chickens?" are classics in the world of children's music. In a career spanning more than sixty years, she recorded forty albums, won a lifetime-achievement Grammy, and became the best-selling individual artist in the history of Smithsonian Folkways Records, the independent label that played a significant role in the 1960s folk revival movement and introduced listeners to Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. During her remarkable career, Jenkins joined forces with twentieth-century luminaries such as Odetta, Big Bill Broonzy, Armando Peraza, Bayard Rustin, and Fred Rogers. Despite her wide-reaching influence on children's music, Ella Jenkins's sonic civil rights activism isn't widely known today.
Based on dozens of interviews and access to Ella Jenkins's personal archives, Gayle F. Wald's This Is Rhythm shares how Jenkins, a "rhythm specialist" with no formal musical training, became the most prolific and significant American children's musician of the twentieth century, creating a beloved catalog of songs grounded in values of community-building, antiracism, and cultural pluralism. Wald traces how the daughter of southern migrants translated the music of her own Black girlhood on the South Side of Chicago into a form of civil rights activism-a musical education that empowered children by introducing them to Black history, African diasporic rhythms, and a participatory, community-centered approach to music. Wald also discusses how, beginning in 1961, Jenkins built a life with a female partner who supported her materially and emotionally. Although Jenkins did not talk publicly about her sixty-three-year relationship, she opened up to Wald, offering insight into how a "private" Black woman in the public eye negotiated sexuality in an era before gay and lesbian liberation movements. Throughout her career, her innovative music found its way into thousands of community centers, classrooms, and concert venues, and her "call-and-response" method has influenced and empowered generations of children and adults.
A beautifully written tribute to Ella Jenkins's legacy, this biography illustrates her impact on children's music and expands our understanding of folk music's relationship with social justice. Jenkins used music to build a new world in which children-and adults-are encouraged to listen to each other's distinct rhythms.

Kevin Killeen, "Thomas Browne: Selected Writings "
English | ISBN: 0198797656 | 2018 | 1056 pages | PDF | 41 MB
This volume in the 21st Century Oxford Authors series offers students and readers an authoritative, comprehensive selection of the work of Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682). Accompanied by full scholarly apparatus, the edition demonstrates the breadth of the author of some of the most brilliant and delirious prose in English Literature.

Lauded by writers ranging from Coleridge to Virginia Woolf, from Borges to W.G. Sebald, Browne's distinct style and the musicality of his phrasing have long been seen as a pinnacle of early modern prose. However, it is Browne's range of subject matter that makes him truly distinct. His writings include the hauntingly meditative Urn-Burial, and the elaborate The Garden of Cyrus, a work that borders on a madness of infinite pattern.

Threading the Concept : Powerful Learning for the Music Classroom By Debra Gordon Hedden
2010 | 142 Pages | ISBN: 160709441X | EPUB | 1 MB
This book provides both preservice and seasoned music educators with a unique and powerful way of teaching. The premise of the book is to offer a pedagogical approach that emphasizes focus on conceptual learning that is sensory oriented. From the musical concepts we teach_melody, harmony, rhythm, and form_the teacher targets one concept per lesson (e.g., melody), and provides learning experiences in singing, listening, performing, moving, reading/writing, and improvising/composing that are all focused on only that concept. Essentially, the learners are bombarded visually, aurally, and kinesthetically, gaining a firm grasp of the concept because they have heard, sung, moved, performed, written, and created in that class, all in small time segments. The teacher has a greater ability to reach all students' learning needs and engage them in active learning in each class. The book not only offers background information about the learning process, but also specific lesson templates that serve as conceptual models for music classes.

Margolis Joseph, "Three Paradoxes of Personhood: The Venetian Lectures "
English | ISBN: 8869771040 | 2017 | 140 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The starting point of Joseph Margolis' last philosophical effort is represented by the problem of the human "gap" in animal continuity: "There appear to be no comparable variants of animal evolution effected by anything like the culturally enabled creation". While we share with other animals more or less refined forms of societal life, acquiring a natural language remains a distinctively human character: although it is grounded in the completely natural favourable changes in the human vocal apparatus and brain, the merely causal emergence of language in humans reacts back into human primates by transforming them into persons or selves. The artifactuality of persons appears to be at the same time a natural and emergent phenomenon, constituting the other side of the process of language acquisition both by early hominids and by human infants. In this perspective the largely informal, mongrel and approximate functionality of ordinary language is interpreted as a good tool for the cultural animal to cope with the world, while the collective dimension of human forms of life appears as the shared context of external and internal constitution of the human selves
