Lezioni di Diritto dei Mass-Media
Italiano | 2022 | ISBN: 8893853051 | 156 Pages | PDF | 2 MB
Cynthia Banham, "Liberal Democracies and the Torture of Their Citizens"
English | ISBN: 1509906843 | 2017 | 272 pages | PDF | 2 MB
This book analyses and compares how the USA's liberal allies responded to the use of torture against their citizens after 9/11. Did they resist, tolerate or support the Bush Administration's policies concerning the mistreatment of detainees when their own citizens were implicated and what were the reasons for their actions? Australia, the UK and Canada are liberal democracies sharing similar political cultures, values and alliances with America; yet they behaved differently when their citizens, caught up in the War on Terror, were tortured. How states responded to citizens' human rights claims and predicaments was shaped, in part, by demands for accountability placed on the executive government by domestic actors. This book argues that civil society actors, in particular, were influenced by nuanced differences in their national political and legal contexts that enabled or constrained human rights activism. It maps the conditions under which individuals and groups were more or less likely to become engaged when fellow citizens were tortured, focusing on national rights culture, the domestic legal and political human rights framework, and political opportunities.
Thomas C Sorenson, "Liberating Christianity: Overcoming Obstacles to Faith in the New Millennium"
English | ISBN: 1498251935 | 2008 | 238 pages | EPUB | 1493 KB
Christianity is in crisis in our North American context, especially among the cultural elite and people with progressive views. The reasons for the faith's loss of credibility have to do, in large part, with the dominant philosophical materialism of our culture and with the understanding of the faith almost universally held by Americans both inside the churches and outside them. In this book, Thomas C. Sorenson calls this understanding "Biblicism," by which he means the belief that the Bible is to be understood only literally and that, in one way or another, its authority comes from its claimed origin with God. Many enlightened people also reject Christianity because the only Christianity they know is the judgmental, socially conservative faith that the most vocal and visible advocates of the faith among us so loudly espouse. This book offers a different understanding of the faith. It begins with a discussion of the universal human experience of the spiritual dimension of reality. It then discusses symbol and myth as the necessary language for communicating that experience. The book shows that all human experience is necessarily subjective and that religious truth is thus also necessarily subjective. Therefore, religious truth is relative, not universal and absolute. The work argues that the Bible is a human work expressing its authors' experience of the divine. The book then discusses other obstacles to faith and offers a different understanding of the issues they raise. The book replaces the classical theory of atonement with a theology of the cross, based mainly on the work of Douglas John Hall. It redefines salvation as having to do with this life, not with the afterlife. It closes with a section that replaces the dominant social conservatism of popular Christianity with Jesus's teachings of nonviolence, economic justice, and radical inclusivity.
Geoffrey Burn, "Liberating the Will of Australia: Towards the Flourishing of the Land and All Its Peoples"
English | ISBN: 1725263831 | 2020 | 242 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Why do many First People in Australia find themselves continually under siege? Why do many interventions fail to produce what was hoped for? Why is it that, when there have been many positive developments, at some deep level, nothing seems to have changed? Will the "Uluru Statement from the Heart" ensure the future security of the First Peoples in Australia? By developing strands from Christian theology, Liberating the Will of Australia answers these questions in a way that gets to the heart of the problem. It is shown that the way that the First Peoples were treated by the first European in-comers became an indelible part of what Australia currently is. This explains why harm is often done even when good is intended, and why some problems are too complex to solve. But that does not mean that we need to be stuck in the past: through deep repentance by the "Subsequent Peoples," much more than an apology, we can take hold of the work of God to bring new things out of what is broken. Ultimately, this is profoundly hopeful. Although focusing on Australia, the theological tools developed can be applied in other colonial and post-colonial contexts.

English | ISBN: 1625642431 | 2015 | 156 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Life After Death takes an in-depth look at the important issues surrounding death. Does it matter what we believe? Why do we avoid talking about it? Can we confidently assume there is life after death? This book presents the Christian view of death and what lies beyond. It doesn't avoid the difficult questions of judgment and the possibility of missing out on all that God has planned for his people. However, for those who are searching for a real relationship with the living God, Life After Death presents a glorious message of hope and certainty. You don't have to go through life with any doubt about the future. On the contrary, if you are willing to accept all that God offers, on his terms, you will be able to look forward to an endless future in which you will experience all that God, in his infinite love and wisdom, has planned for you. You will also find a hope that will transform your goals, values, and understanding of every part of this present life.
Life Beyond Earth: The Fermi Paradox - Or Why We Are Still Waiting to Meet Aliens
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031816943 | 303 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 26 MB
This book analyzes the likelihood of intelligent civilizations from two different standpoints: firstly, using the famous Drake equation and, secondly, by analyzing some of the most popular hypotheses about the likely behavior of intelligent alien civilizations. The existence of intelligent extraterrestrial civilizations in the universe is one of the most intriguing scientific and philosophical problems. Is it possible that we are the only intelligent species in this incredibly vast universe? Enrico Fermi, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century, posed the same question during a lunch with his colleagues in 1950. What are the implications for a universe where there is only one intelligent species? The universe may be stranger than we think.
Youssef Belal, "Life of Shari'a: A Comparative Anthropology of Law"
English | ISBN: 0520410041 | 2025 | 374 pages | PDF | 4 MB
Is there a way to think about contemporary life with knowledge that is neither modern nor Western? Rather than confining Islam to a "religion" and shariʿa to its "law," Youssef Belal provocatively argues that Islamic shariʿa is a mode of knowledge with its own concepts and scholarly categories through which the world and the self are grasped. The Life of Shariʿa considers two intertwined lineages: how Islamic scholars have formulated knowledge from the classical period to today and how Westerners have understood the law and its origins. By melding these two traditions, Belal puts the formation of modern law under a new light and offers, through a compelling conceptualization of shariʿa, a powerful argument for its continued relevance to the life of contemporary Muslims.

Limit Cycles and Homoclinic Networks in Two-Dimensional Polynomial Systems
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819726166 | 450 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 77 MB
This book is a monograph about limit cycles and homoclinic networks in polynomial systems. The study of dynamical behaviors of polynomial dynamical systems was stimulated by Hilbert's sixteenth problem in 1900. Many scientists have tried to work on Hilbert's sixteenth problem, but no significant results have been achieved yet. In this book, the properties of equilibriums in planar polynomial dynamical systems are studied. The corresponding first integral manifolds are determined. The homoclinic networks of saddles and centers (or limit cycles) in crossing-univariate polynomial systems are discussed, and the corresponding bifurcation theory is developed. The corresponding first integral manifolds are polynomial functions. The maximum numbers of centers and saddles in homoclinic networks are obtained, and the maximum numbers of sinks, sources, and saddles in homoclinic networks without centers are obtained as well. Such studies are to achieve global dynamics of planar polynomial dynamical systems, which can help one study global behaviors in nonlinear dynamical systems in physics, chemical reaction dynamics, engineering dynamics, and so on. This book is a reference for graduate students and researchers in the field of dynamical systems and control in mathematics, mechanical, and electrical engineering.

Linguistics and Language Play
English | 2025 | ISBN: 981960687X | 334 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 3 MB
This book constitutes a comprehensive study of the field of language play from a linguistic viewpoint, demonstrating how linguistics can throw light on this important, but often under-rated, aspect of language use. It is both theoretical and descriptive in nature. In terms of the former, it proposes a 'ludic' function of language: that language is there to be played with, and that this is a universal feature of human activity. It rejects the traditional notion that language play is purely for 'fun' or entertainment and stresses the serious nature of certain ludic activities, such as cryptography. It discusses the notion of linguistic creativity, considering this to be inadequate in accounting for all aspects of language play. It assesses the value of popular terms such as 'pun' and introduces new terms/concepts such as 'serendipity' and 'internym' to account for important phenomena.
