Selda Tuncer, "Women and Public Space in Turkey: Gender, Modernity and the Urban Experience "
English | ISBN: 1784537527 | 2018 | 320 pages | PDF | 27 MB
Turkey's process of `modernization' developed rapidly during the second half of the twentieth century. New social and legal reforms were institutionalized and political and economic changes located the country as a more liberated, `Western-style' society. Women and Public Space in Turkey provides a historical understanding of women's experiences of this modernization between 1950 and 1980, a vital period in which their participation in urban public life expanded through higher education and employment. Selda Tuncer examines the precise conditions that enabled women to leave the home and reveals how they perceived and experienced urban public space and social relations. Drawing on interviews with two generations of women from Ankara, and using personal family photographs, the book provides invaluable insights into women in a predominantly Muslim society who are living in a highly secular social context. Tuncer specifically focuses on women's everyday experiences and discusses how the relationship between women and public space was actually controlled and regulated by different notions of `domestication', especially in the micro-politics of daily life. The book sheds new light on the gendered processes of nation-building, socio-cultural transformations, and the crucial connections between gender, modernity and the urban experience in a non-Western context.
Edgar Stubbersfield, "Women in Ministry: Paul's Advice to Timothy in Its Historical Setting"
English | ISBN: 1666790079 | 2022 | 128 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Worldwide, most Christians are members of denominations that exclude women from ministry. However, coinciding with the rise of feminism, there has been a strong pushback against this traditional view. Conversely, in some quarters there has been a strengthening of resolve to maintain the status quo, believing that male leadership is God-ordained and valid for all times and places. Is the push for women in Christian leadership a case of the church now conforming to the spirit of the age, or has the church with its male leadership, for the last 1900 years, been guilty of that? Is the present move for inclusion a case of "yet more light and truth breaking forth from God's word"? This book is a defense of women's role in ministry. It looks initially at the condition women lived under when the New Testament was written and their expectation for ministry. Later chapters examine the discord in ancient Ephesus that led to restrictions in ministry for women and then look in detail at 1 Tim 2:8-15, the passage that is commonly quoted to restrict women's roles. My conclusion is that that it does not provide clear evidence of a permanent prohibition of women in leadership roles.
Erica Gene Delsandro, "Women Making Modernism"
English | ISBN: 0813066174 | 2020 | 246 pages | PDF | 6 MB
Challenging the tendency of scholars to view women writers of the modernist era as isolated artists who competed with one another for critical and cultural acceptance, Women Making Modernism reveals the robust networks women created and maintained that served as platforms and support for women's literary careers. The essays in this volume highlight both familiar and lesser-known writers including Virginia Woolf, Mina Loy, Dorothy Richardson, Emma Goldman, May Sinclair, and Mary Hutchinson. For these writers, relationships and correspondences with other women were key to navigating a literary culture that not only privileged male voices but also reserved most financial and educational opportunities for men. Their examples show how women's writing communities interconnected to generate a current of energy, innovation, and ambition that was central to the modernist movement. Contributors to this volume argue that the movement's prominent intellectual networks were dependent on the invisible work of women artists, a fact that the field of modernist studies has too long overlooked. Amplifying the reality of women's contributions to modernism, this volume advocates for an "orientation of openness" in reading and teaching literature from the period, helping to ease the tensions between feminist and modernist studies.
Rachel Reeves, "Women of Westminster: The MPs who Changed Politics"
English | ISBN: 1788312201 | 2019 | 320 pages | PDF | 6 MB
In 1919 Nancy Astor was elected as the Member of Parliament for Plymouth Sutton, becoming the first woman MP to take her seat in the House of Commons. Her achievement was all the more remarkable given that women (and even then only some women) had only been entitled to vote for just over a year. In the past 100 years, a total of 491 women have been elected to Parliament. Yet it was not until 2016 that the total number of women ever elected surpassed the number of male MPs in a single parliament. The achievements of these political pioneers have been remarkable - Britain has now had two female Prime Ministers and women MPs have made significant strides in fighting for gender equality from the earliest suffrage campaigns to Barbara Castle's fight for equal pay to Harriet Harman's recent legislation on the gender pay gap. Yet the stories of so many women MPs have too often been overlooked in political histories. In this book, Rachel Reeves brings forgotten MPs out of the shadows and looks at the many battles fought by the Women of Westminster, from 1919 to 2019.
Nancy Hedberg, "Women, Men, and the Trinity: What Does It Mean to Be Equal?"
English | ISBN: 1608991997 | 2010 | 136 pages | EPUB | 428 KB
There is a gridlock in churches today regarding the role of women. This debate extends beyond the relationship between men and women. In 1 Corinthians 11:3, when Paul says, "the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God" he is drawing a parallel between the relationship of men and women and the relationship of the Father and the Son within the Trinity. This book explores the controversial theological premise that, while maintaining equality of essence, functionally the Son is eternally subordinate to the Father and women are permanently subordinate to men. Nancy Hedberg shares from her research and personal experience to make the case that equality of essence on the one hand, and permanent functional subordination on the other-whether applied to the Trinity or the relationship between men and women-is a questionable premise and is not supported logically, historically, or biblically. Women, Men, and the Trinity includes contemporary, historical, and biblical research regarding functional and essential equality and explores the practical implications of true equality.
Gareth William David Stewart, "Word and Power: Is the Theology of John Wimber Compatible with Presbyterian Theology and Practice?"
English | ISBN: 1625645902 | 2015 | 284 pages | EPUB | 646 KB
Historically, the Reformed and Charismatic streams have seemed to be almost mutually exclusive. In recent years, this exclusivity has been being challenged by a new generation of Reformed thinkers. This work aims at considering the contribution of John Wimber, the late leader of the Vineyard Churches, to contemporary theological reflection within the Reformed tradition. Taking into account John Wimber's unique theology of the "radical middle" which is somewhere between Pentecostal and Evangelical, this book asks whether Wimber may be a possible alternative source for the contemporary Reformed Churches as they approach ministry and mission in the twenty-first century. Written from a confessional Presbyterian context in Northern Ireland, Word and Power places Wimber in his theological context and asks whether Wimber's view of power evangelism, discipleship formation, and ministry training might be a model that Reformed Churches-and Presbyterians in particular-could adopt for their ecclesiology today.
Jason S Barnhart, "Word-Spirit Communal Revelationalism: The Brethren-Evangelical Theological Epistemology of Dr. J. Allen Miller "
English | ISBN: 1666729027 | 2022 | 234 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
This work first examines the theological streams of influence that constitute Brethren theology-Anabaptism and Radical Pietism-with particular focus given to key thinkers and leaders. It then explores the nuances of what came to be American Fundamentalism and Protestant Liberalism of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which provide important context to the thought of J. Allen Miller (1866-1935), a central Ashland Brethren theologian of that period. Miller's theology demonstrates sympathy with both poles of the theological spectrum but remains distinct as a thoughtful mediation between these two extremes. Miller's theological approach, termed "Word-Spirit Communal Revelationalism," consists in his particular theological epistemology and biblical hermeneutics. When Miller's theological witness moves into conversation with American evangelicalism, it proves helpful for the Ashland Brethren as they engage with the contemporary American evangelical landscape. His witness assists Brethren and other American evangelicals in offering a corrective to several pathologies or distortions identified within American evangelicalism. His theological method assists the larger American evangelical movement with tools for mediation over against polarization.
Glenn D. Deckert, "Working Abroad with Purpose: The Way of a Tentmaker"
English | ISBN: 1532674554 | 2019 | 124 pages | EPUB | 1122 KB
The wise King Solomon gives us this proverb: "Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings" (Prov 22:29). This book won't ensure that you and your professional skills end up meeting kings, but it will show how you and your training can be planted among unreached people abroad. By taking a job in your field of expertise, you gain far more than a paycheck; rather, a network of relationships with colleagues and neighbors. In doing so, you will learn that you are in good company with the Apostle Paul and thousands of other "tentmakers" in church history.
Deckert draws on his tentmaking experience with his wife and children spanning twenty years and six countries. Readers will learn of a biology professor colleague in the Middle East who, on hearing the gospel over lunch, replied, "That's different. That's wonderful. No one ever taught me that before." In another country, a nationally ranked chess player, after reading the Gospels, was moved to tears, saying, "He died for me. I'm a sinner." This book takes you through twelve key areas of tentmaking, from finding a job to retirement.

George Nicholas, "Working as Indigenous Archaeologists: Reckoning New Paths Between Past and Present Lives "
English | ISBN: 1032025379 | 2024 | 644 pages | EPUB | 39 MB
Working as Indigenous Archaeologists explores the often-contentious relationship between Indigenous and other formerly colonized peoples and Archaeology through their own voices.
Over the past 35-plus years, the once-novel field of Indigenous Archaeology has become a relatively familiar part of the archaeological landscape. It has been celebrated, criticized, and analyzed as to its practical and theoretical applications, and its political nature. No less important are the life stories of its Indigenous practitioners. What has brought some of them to become practicing archaeologists or heritage managers? What challenges have they faced from both inside and outside their communities? And why haven't more pursued Archaeology as a vocation or avocation? This volume is a collection of 60 autobiographical chapters by Indigenous archaeologists and heritage specialists from around the world―some community based, some academic, some in other realms―who are working to connect past and present in meaningful, and especially personal ways. As Archaeology continues to evolve, there remain strong tensions between an objective, science-oriented, evidentiary-based approach to knowing the past and a more subjective, relational, humanistic approach informed by local values, traditional knowledge, and holistic perspective. While there are no maps for these new territories, hearing directly from those Indigenous individuals who have pursued Archaeology reveals the pathways taken. Those stories will provide inspiration and confidence for those curious about what lies ahead.

Recognized since the time of Hippocrates, pneumonia remains the primary pulmonary illness in humans. It occurs in all age groups from neonates to the elderly. Not infrequently, it is a cause of serious consequences, sometimes leading to sepsis, respiratory failure, and death. Pneumonia acquired in the community settings differs from the one acquired in the hospitals in various aspects, such as the microbial etiology, diagnostic algorithm, and therapeutic approach. The response to therapy and prognosis are also different in different types of pneumonias. Pneumonia can also be classified on the etiological basis, whether caused by microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, or rarely parasites), chemical agents, or immunological injuries. Different articles in this issue allude to some of these aspects.

Kendra Haloviak Valentine, "Worlds at War, Nations in Song: Dialogic Imagination and Moral Vision in the Hymns of the Book of Revelation"
English | ISBN: 1498204902 | 2015 | 206 pages | EPUB | 1343 KB
Rather than representing the book of Revelation as a single "apocalyptic" genre, Kendra Haloviak Valentine demonstrates that the work in fact reflects several genres-apocalyptic, prophetic and liturgical-within the overall framework of an epistle. This study focuses on the sixteen hymns, a largely neglected part of the literary construction of the work. Responding to the insight of Mikhail Bakhtin that literary genres carry ways of thinking about the world, this important study calls attention to the multiple voices within the text that need to be heard-voices that soften the book's transcendent, future focus so that it is not allowed complete dominance. Hymns, as the sites of colliding and collaborating genres, engage the reader. Worlds at War, Nations in Song explores the role of these liturgical elements within the moral enterprise to suggest that the book of Revelation provides readers with a moral vision linking the future with the present. Readers are called to respond in worship and witness. By calling attention to the multiple voices within Revelation, Haloviak Valentine demonstrates the invalidity of seeking "one" correct interpretation. Recognizing this dialogic approach may help prevent the misinterpretations that led to such tragedies as Waco and Jonestown.
Pierre Hegy, "Worship as Community Drama: Introduction to Liturgy Evaluation"
English | ISBN: 1532673027 | 2019 | 228 pages | EPUB | 1494 KB
Church weddings, funerals, and most Sunday services reflect the values and dramas of their communities, even when the ministers are the main or sole actors. This point is illustrated by examples ranging from American television masses to the Zairean three-hour services in the Congo. Of greatest interest to readers might be the Sunday services at ordinary parishes, which also range from friendly but uninspiring to innovative and inviting. There are also two exceptionally vital churches analyzed here: an evangelical church in the Pentecostal tradition and a social justice parish in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr. Today one can hardly buy an item in a store or on the Internet without being asked for an evaluation, yet church services are seldom evaluated. There can be no improvement without evaluation. This book proposes a method of evaluation in eight steps that must be rigorously scientific and at the same time offer a vision for spiritual growth. The prophet Elijah found God in earthquakes and fire, but most people find mystery through art, music, rhythm, chanting, expressive readings, evocative rituals, and enlightened homilies. Today people expect "mystagogy" rather than routine performances. Mystagogy can be learned and improved through evaluation, to which this book desires to make a major contribution.
Rob Hewell, "Worship Beyond Nationalism: Practicing the Reign of God"
English | ISBN: 1498260861 | 2012 | 154 pages | EPUB | 1419 KB
The church in the United States faces a dilemma: How is it possible for Christ's followers to worship faithfully in a nationalistic environment where religion and politics enjoy a vigorous affiliation while the separation of church and state is celebrated as the standard for the relationship between nation and faith? When nationalism propagates itself through a cross-pollination of the stories, symbols, and celebrations of the nation-state and religious groups, the stage is set for a national history bearing the character of sanctified legend. Such resulting civil religious activity is likely to create dissonance for Christ's followers between what they understand to be biblically faithful and what nationalistic practices may endorse as religiously valid. Worship Beyond Nationalism explores faithful worship as a political act by which Christians declare their allegiance to God in Christ rather than to worldly empires, enabling congregations to enact the reality of God's kingdom and embody the gospel for the glory of God and for the sake of the world.
Steven D. Brooks, "Worship Formation: A Call to Embrace Christian Growth in Each Element of the Worship Service"
English | ISBN: 1532696345 | 2020 | 172 pages | EPUB | 11 MB
Worship Formation provides a thoughtful perspective on Christian worship and addresses how each element within a worship service spiritually forms the worshiper. Brooks challenges the reader toward an understanding that worshiping through music, prayer, Scripture reading, Communion, sermon, stillness, giving, and baptism engages the worshiper in spiritual formation. Worship Formation encourages the worshiper to not just go through the motions when they gather for worship, but to realize that they are being formed through each element of worship, and challenges those in leadership to be thoughtful in their approach to planning and leading worship services.

Worship Quest offers a practical perspective on four roles of worship leadership and how they are to be fulfilled within various worship gatherings. Worship Quest helps readers come to understand the different worship gatherings and the various roles of worship leadership, and thus successfully fulfill God's call of leading in worship.
