China, Yugoslavia, and Socialist Worldmaking: Convergences and Divergences
by Zvonimir Stopić, Jure Ramšak
English | 2023 | ISBN: 9789617195101 | 374 Pages | PDF | 2.4 MB

China and Yugoslavia played unique roles in the global Cold War story. Each in its own way and despite various shortcomings, both countries at tempted to defy the rules of international conduct that Cold War superpowers were setting according to their own interests and influence the creation of new ones. The intersection of these attempts, followed by the two countries' unique ideological standpoints, bore upon the development of their respective foreign affairs policies, as well as on their understanding of the changes that the world was undergoing during the Cold War era, and on certain aspects of their internal development. Furthermore, the dynamics of Sino-Yugoslavia relations also exerted tangible influence on many other countries around the globe, significantly impacting the course of postcolonial processes. Although researchers have been looking in this direction with more interest in the past decade or so, this collection shows there are still many "gaps" in our knowledge about both Sino-Yugoslav relations and their influence on the events of the Cold War. The ideological depth of Chinese criticism of Yugoslav revisionism, the intersection of Chinese and Yugoslav initiatives toward various national liberation movements throughout the world, Yugoslavia's role in China's reformulation of its international policies in the late 1960s, the Chinese understanding of Yugoslavia's role during the "reform and opening-up" period, as well as China's stance toward Yugoslavia's dissolution, to mention only some, are all topics that have not yet been thoroughly researched. Furthermore, the methods and the approach to the research of Sino-Yugoslav relations should be applied to China's relations with "Eastern Bloc" countries, which would undoubtedly enhance the understanding of the internal processes that took place on the "communist" side of the Cold War, most notably, the progress of the bloc's dissolution. Hopefully, this collection will inspire and encourage fresh research that expands the understanding of the far-reaching consequences of the global Cold War.

Chinese Parents Don't Say I Love You: A memoir of saying the unsayable with food
by Candice Chung
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1783968850 | 311 Pages | True ePUB | 2.9 MB

A memoir about saying the unsayable with food, and how our eating lives can bring us together, and sometimes - keep us apart.
I have felt the pull of this extravagant wanting elsewhere ... A meal is a shape. It is a container into which we pour our cravings.
At 35, when a 13-year relationship ends, food journalist Candice Chung finds herself losing not only her first love, but also her most reliable restaurant review partner. Then her retired Cantonese parents offer to be her new plus-ones, and she faces a dilemma: is it better to eat together in polite silence, or to try saying the unsayable-to broach how, for the past decade, they managed to drift so profoundly apart?
Soon, a geographer enters her life, and the course of their relationship forces Chung to address what's still left unsaid. To do so, she must find a new vocabulary-a way to unscramble what her family has been trying to express all along. Not through words, but with food.
'I absolutely loved this book about all forms of love, and books and food and distance and travel. It was a real and delightful surprise, full of smart thought and deft words - and also very funny.' Ella Risbridger, author of The Year of Miracles: Recipes About Love + Grief + Growing Things
'A touching, poignant love story about so many great loves in Candice Chung's life - at times heartbreaking, complicated and bittersweet, but also, uplifting and full of tenderness. I loved her precise descriptions of food which were so vivid and flavoursome and yet never overwritten.' Huma Qureshi, author of Things We Do Not Tell the People We Love
'A wonderfully heart warming memoir from the bottom of the stomach. Candice Chung shows us how love and relationships can be influenced by food culture, and how our dinner tables have shaped the way we understand the world, as well as ourselves.' Xiaolu Guo, author of Radical and A Lover's Discourse

Christian Nationalism and the Paradox of Secularism: Philosophical, Theological, and Historical Reflections on Religious Nationalism
Andrew Fiala
English | 2025 | ISBN: 9004727094 | 294 Pages | True PDF | 5.6 MB

Christian nationalism is a backlash against the success of secularism and the growth of nonreligion. Its proponents go so far as to claim that secularism is diabolical. This rejection of secularism poses a significant challenge for secular systems, which aim to be inclusive of diverse religious ideas. This book explains the depth of this challenge while recounting the views of Christian nationalists, including Donald Trump. It shows how key figures in the American tradition-Adams, Jefferson, Madison, and others-promoted political secularism. It uses Christian theology and modern political philosophy to argue in defence of secularism and against Christian nationalism.

Circulations: Modernist Imaginaries of Colonialism and Decolonization in Papua New Guinea
by Courtney Handman
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0520416007 | 233 Pages | True ePUB | 4.1 MB

In Circulations, Courtney Handman examines the surprising continuities in the ways that modernist communications discourses shaped both colonial and decolonial projects in Papua New Guinea. Often described as a place with too many mountains and too many languages to be modern, Papua New Guinea was seen as a space of circulatory primitivity-where people, things, and talk could not move. Colonial missionaries and administrators, and even anticolonial delegations of the United Nations Trusteeship Council, argued that this circulatory primitivity could be overcome only through the management of communication infrastructures, bureaucratic information flows, and the introduction of English. Innovatively bringing together analyses of radios, airplanes, telepathy, bureaucracy, and lingua francas, Circulations argues for the critical role of communicative networks and communicative imaginaries in political processes of colonialism and decolonization worldwide.

Citizenship: New Trajectories in Law
by Engin Isin
English | 2024 | ISBN: 1032497645 | 134 Pages | PDF | 4.3 MB

This book outlines a critical theory of citizenship, with an emphasis on how citizenship institutes power relations and organises the rights and obligations of those who become its subjects.
Whether it is the question of the rights of animals, children, migrants, minorities, mothers, or mountains, and whether such rights are protected or guaranteed by national law, international law, or human rights law, the issue of citizenship has already indelibly marked the 21st century. As an institution, citizenship governs the relationship between a polity and its peoples by dividing them into citizens and noncitizens, with differentiated rights and obligations. So necessarily, this book argues, citizenship is an institution of domination and emancipation that brings into play the struggles of those who want to protect certain privileges and the struggles of those who are against being caught in either second-class or noncitizen categories. Deconstructing dominant theories and practices of citizenship, a critical theory of citizenship must, therefore, not only analyse intersecting rights, but also connect citizenship to these broader social struggles. For it is these struggles, the book maintains, that give meaning to citizenship itself.
The book will be of interest to scholars and students in sociolegal studies, sociology, politics, and as well as those working in citizenship, migration, and refugee studies.

Classics and Race: A Historical Reader
by Sarah Derbew, Daniel Orrells
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1800088108 | 506 Pages | True PDF | 4.9 MB

From Renaissance humanism to the transatlantic slave trade, this collection portrays how classical texts have been entangled with the politics of race, shaping exclusion and resistance.
Spanning centuries and continents, Classics and Race follows the entangled histories of classical studies and racial thought to show how ancient texts have been used to shape and justify ideas about race. This essential collection presents historical primary sources from the late medieval period to the mid-twentieth century, each paired with insightful essays by leading scholars who unpack their significance in shaping both racist and anti-racist ideologies.
Moving chronologically, the volume explores classical humanism in the Renaissance, the discipline's ties to the transatlantic slave trade, and the global intersections of race and antiquity across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, and North America. Rather than treating Classics as a neutral intellectual pursuit, this work demonstrates how the field has long been entangled in broader struggles over identity and power. More relevant than ever, Classics and Race offers a vital historical foundation for ongoing debates about the role of antiquity in shaping modern racial discourse.

Clause Chaining in the Languages of the World
by Hannah S. Sarvasy, Alexandra Y. Aikhenvald
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0198870310 | 892 Pages | PDF | 19 MB

The languages of the world make use of a variety of techniques for describing events and putting sentences together. This volume takes a typological approach to clause chaining, a fascinating feature of the grammar of hundreds of languages outside Europe, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, East Africa, across Central Asia, and the Americas. Clause chains consist of several dependent clauses and one main clause, and are used to organize discourse and to foreground or background events and participants; they often go together with switch-reference marking, an indication of whether upcoming subjects will be co-referential with preceding subjects or not. The introductory chapter features a discussion of the typological properties of clause chaining, with a brief overview of previous approaches to and investigations of clause chains followed by an overview of their recurrent grammatical features; it ends with an appendix featuring notes for fieldworkers. The first part of the book explores general issues in clause chaining, including prosody, acquisition, and language contact and history; later parts then examine clause chaining and related phenomena in a wide range of languages from around the world.

Communicating Science, Climate Change and the Environment in Hybrid Media: Constructed Facts, Contested Truths
by Mette Marie Roslyng, Anna Rantasila
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1032766654 | 259 Pages | True PDF | 24 MB

This volume examines how a new hybrid mediascape represents and contributes to the construction of facts and knowledge in relation to science, environment, and climate controversies, providing a new, critical perspective to the bourgeoning field of science and environment communication.
Arguing that science must be understood from an inclusive perspective, respecting public values and concerns alongside scientific arguments, the authors demonstrate how this will allow us to properly understand the role of science, truth, and factuality alongside the ethical, cultural, and political concerns about science raised in different publics. The chapters focus on the more controversial aspects of science and environmental communication: misinformation, public understandings of science and the environmental crises, vaccination, and the role of the hybrid mediascape in science, environment, and climate conflicts.
Offering a much-needed interdisciplinary approach to understand the role of science of media in science and environment conflicts, this book will appeal to students and academics in the areas of media and communication, journalism, cultural studies, science, environment and risk communication, and digital media studies, as well as sociology and political science.

Computable General Equilibrium Modeling: Theory and Applications
by Kenneth Castellanos, Andrew Feltenstein
English | 2024 | ISBN: 0367272059 | 147 Pages | True ePUB | 0.8 MB

Many books have been written on computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling. However, there are certain important areas for economic policy that have been largely overlooked. This intermediate/advanced text presents the topic as a methodology for the analysis of macro and fiscal policies in modern economies while introducing levels of disaggregation that are beyond the scope of standard macro models.
The book begins by presenting the historical and intuitive background of general equilibrium analysis. Moving on, computer software is introduced to derive numerical solutions for economic models. The authors provide examples of code, bringing in data sources that have become the foundations of CGE applications. The methodology presented here, which differs from other CGE books, includes financial assets, government budget deficits, and debt financing of private investment. These topics are analyzed in the context of dynamic optimization, generating endogenous variables such as inflation, interest, and growth rates. The book also devotes significant attention to the applications of CGE models to developing economies.
This textbook comes with a range of downloadable supplements and will be a valuable resource for students taking a CGE course as part of a program in advanced microeconomics, macroeconomics, development economics, or international trade economics.
