Engineering Elixir Applications: Navigate Each Stage of Software Delivery with Confidence
by Ellie Fairholm, Josep Giralt D'Lacoste
English | 2025 | ASIN: B0D9N5J82G | 450 Pages | True PDF | 12.8 MB

The days of separate dev and ops teams are over - knowledge silos and the "throw it over the fence" culture they create are the enemy of progress. As an engineer or developer, you need to confidently own each stage of the software delivery process. This book introduces a new paradigm, BEAMOps, that helps you build, test, deploy, and debug BEAM applications. Create effective development and deployment strategies; leverage continuous improvement pipelines; and ensure environment integrity. Combine operational orchestrators such as Docker Swarm with the distribution, fault tolerance, and scalability of the BEAM, to create robust and reliable applications.
BEAMOps starts by building a solid foundation for your project. On the infrastructure side, see how to use Terraform before you even start coding to automate your deployment and operations. On the project management side, we show you how to use issues and milestones to simplify tracking; you'll use this foundation as you go through the book, implementing each of the steps required to deploy a scalable Elixir application.
Now that you have a foundation, you can start building. Create a Phoenix LiveView application and explore mix releases. Make your deployments reliable with Docker. Continuously improve your codebase by implementing an efficient continuous deployment/integration pipeline with GitHub Actions. Scale the Phoenix LiveView application and operate a distributed BEAM system in production using AWS EC2 nodes, AWS load balancers, and a remote Docker swarm. Recognize which application metrics should be collected and monitored, and set alerts when certain thresholds are met to ensure that your application auto-scales. Ship less code more often, and ensure it works!
The pragmatic BEAMOps approach that we teach in this book - an extension of the well-known DevOps paradigm - will help you become a multidisciplinary developer who is empowered to own each stage of the software delivery process. After reading this book, you'll understand how to apply the BEAMOps principles in your daily work, creating reliable, scalable, and easy to understand applications in a cooperative team environment.

Enveloping Worlds: Toward a Discourse of Immersive Performance
by E.B. Hunter and Scott Magelssen
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0472077406 | 288 Pages | True ePUB | 1.88 MB

Enveloping Worlds is a collection of essays that analyzes the phenomenon of immersive, participatory performance as it has developed in the US. As this collection demonstrates, immersive performance offers three-dimensional multisensory experiences, inviting audience members to be participants in the unfolding of the story, and challenging pre-existing ideas about the function of performance and entertainment. Enveloping Worlds questions audience agency and choice, the space and boundaries of performance, modes of immersion, empathy and engagement, and ethical considerations through fifteen essays.
Case studies in the volume include the Choctaw Cultural Center in Oklahoma and Choctaw sovereignty; a Black artist's autoethnographic performance challenging White audiences' entitlement to full inclusion; Immersive Van Gogh experiences and their scenographers; telephone performance during the COVID-19 lockdowns; Diane Paulus's The Donkey Show; the Battle of Atlanta panorama; an antebellum-themed department store display from the 1920s; escape rooms; Disney Parks; remotely staged plays about aging and dementia; tiki bars; anachronistic costuming at Renaissance Festivals; the technologies that shape the boundaries of immersive worlds; and tabletop role-playing games. Taken together, these essays contribute a rich discussion of immersive performance across radically different contexts, offering analytical models and terminology with which to clarify and advance this emergent discourse.

Environmental Alteration Leads to Human Disease: A Planetary Health Approach
by Vittorio Ingegnoli, Francesco Lombardo
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3030831590 | 351 Pages | True ePUB | 54 MB

This book aims to explore the impact of human alterations of Earth's ecological systems on human health. Human activities are producing fundamental biophysical changes faster than ever before in the history of our species, which are accompanied by dangerous health effects. Drawing on advanced ecological principles, the book demonstrates the importance of using systemic medicine to study the effects of ecological alterations on human health.
Planetary Health is an interdisciplinary field, but first of all it must be systemic and it needs a preferential relationship between Ecology and Medicine. This relation is to be upgrading, because today both ecology and medicine pursue few systemic characters and few correct interrelations. We need to refer to new principles and methods sustained by the most advanced fields, as Landscape Bionomics and Systemic Medicine. Thus, we will be able to better discover environmental syndromes and their consequences on human health. Environmentaltransformations proposed by PHA (from biodiversity shifts to climate change) do not consider bionomic dysfunctions which can menace human health. On the contrary, finding advanced diagnostic criteria in landscape syndromes can strongly help to find the effects on human well-being. The passage from sick care to health care can't avoid the mentioned upgrading.

Equity and Trusts in Sanskrit Jurisprudence
Christopher T. Fleming
English | 2025 | ISBN: 0197267874 | 512 Pages | PDF | 8.08 MB

Equity and Trusts in Sanskrit Jurisprudence outlines the core principles of equity and trusts in Sanskrit jurisprudence (Dharmáāstra) and traces their application in the practical legal administration of religious and charitable endowments throughout Indian history. Dharmáāstra describes phenomena that, in Anglo-American jurisprudence, are associated with courts of equity: the management of religious and charitable trusts; and the guardianship of those who lack legal capacity. Drawing on Sanskrit jurisprudential and philosophical texts, ancient inscriptions, Persian legal documents, colonial-era law reports, and contemporary case law, Equity and Trusts demonstrates that India's rulers have drawn on rich and venerable Sanskrit jurisprudential principles of equity and trusts in their efforts to regulate religious and charitable endowments. Equity and Trusts presents the history of India as a history of trusts, revealing how the contemporary law of Hindu religious endowments is subtended by a rich mélange of Sanskritic, Persianate, British, and constitutional jurisprudential principles.

Ergodic Theory
Simon Rubinstein-Salzedo
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1470479206 | 227 Pages | True PDF | 6.6 MB

Ergodic theory is concerned with the measure-theoretic or statistical properties of a dynamical system. This book provides a conversational introduction to the topic, guiding the reader from the classical questions of measure theory to modern results such as the polynomial recurrence theorem. Applications to number theory and combinatorics enhance the exposition, while also presenting the utility of ergodic theory in other areas of research.
The book begins with an introduction to measure theory and the Lebesgue integral. After this, the key concepts of the subject are covered: measure-preserving transformations, ergodicity, and invariant measures. These chapters also cover classical results such as Poincaré's recurrence theorem and Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. The book ends with more advanced topics, such as mixing, entropy, and an appendix on the weak* topology. Each chapter ends with numerous exercises with a range of difficulty levels, including a handful of open problems.
An excellent resource for anyone wishing to learn about ergodic theory, the book only assumes prior exposure to proof-based mathematics. Familiarity with real analysis would be ideal but is not required.

European Public Opinion about Security: Who Can Help Us in a Threatening World?
by Bernhard Weßels, Richard Rose
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031862627 | 106 Pages | True ePUB | 0.76 MB

This book's aim is to determine empirically whether Europeans see their multiple security needs best advanced by a consistent reliance on the EU's security policies or by differentiating allies according to their capacity to deal with different types of security threats, economic, military, and climate change. It uses original survey data to test whether people see their country facing multiple threats to their security. If they see a threat, do they want their national government to seek help from the EU, the United Nations or NATO or have their national government look after national security on its own? Given substantial differences in public opinion, we test whether this is due to individual differences in their political attitudes and social characteristics; national context; or differences in the capacity of multi-national institutions. The results have important implications for the public policies of national governments and the EU and for theories of European integration.

Everyday Activists: Undocumented Immigrants' Quest for Justice and Well-Being
by Christina M. Getrich
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1479832227 | 296 Pages | PDF | 2.28 MB

Strategies of resistance by undocumented young adults
About 825,000 of the more than two million undocumented young adults in the United States benefited from the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program started by President Obama in 2012. Through DACA, these young adults are able to work legally in the United States and have been insulated from deportation. However, since President Trump's attempted termination of the program in 2017, DACA recipients have endured a rollercoaster of legal battles that have left them in an unimaginable state of prolonged limbo.
Amid this rapidly shifting political climate, many undocumented young adults have joined the large-scale, high-visibility social movement to fight for policy change and immigrant justice. Yet often overlooked are the thousands more DACA recipients nationwide who have never participated in immigration-related activism. As Christina M. Getrich argues, in less publicly visible ways, they are nonetheless fighting for immigrant well-being and justice in their everyday adult lives, and their more private forms of action should be considered political activism. Drawing from five years of rich ethnographic research with a diverse population of thirty DACA recipients living in the Washington, D.C., area, Everyday Activists portrays the alternative political engagement strategies they enact in their daily lives as they leverage their unique knowledge bases and skill sets and make a meaningful impact in their communities. The volume reveals how these young activists' strategies are instructive for thinking creatively about how to show up in our everyday lives for immigrants and others who are systematically subjected to social exclusion.

Everyday Ecofascism: Crisis and Consumption in American Literature
by Alexander Menrisky
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1517918677 | 296 Pages | True ePUB | 0.81 MB

A timely look into how fascist ideas permeate contemporary culture well beyond the far right
As challenges posed by climate change have intensified in the twenty-first century, right-wing figures in the United States and abroad have increasingly framed anti-immigrant, anti-Indigenous, and white-supremacist sentiments in terms of environmental survival. Everyday Ecofascism explores the insidious nature of this tendency, revealing how permutations of these perspectives in fact resonate across the political spectrum. Drawing on comparative studies of fascism writ large, Alexander Menrisky demonstrates that ecofascism is best understood not as a uniquely right-wing ideology but as a political genre that reinforces white supremacy and other forms of domination.
Presenting a view of fascism as a complex power network that plays out on scales both large and small, Menrisky shows how extremist sentiments have crept into everyday language, stories, and ideas. Through a literary and cultural studies lens, he illuminates ecofascism's narrative patterns and their easy permeation of environmentalist discourses, from back-to-the-land movements to the resurgence of psychedelic drugs, food localism, and pandemic politics. Opposite his analysis of ecofascism in action, Menrisky sheds important light on narrative resistances to dominant conceptions of race, nation, and territory by Native, queer, and women-of-color writers who have countered ethnonationalism for generations.
Bridging past and present, Menrisky powerfully nails down the emergent concept of ecofascism and forms a basis for understanding phenomena like Covid-19, ecological utopianism, and psychedelic environmentalism that detangles ecofascist tendencies from justice-oriented visions of place-based belonging.

Everyday Intuition: What Psychology, Science, and Psychics Can Teach Us About Finding and Trusting Our Inner Voice by Elizabeth Greenwood
English | May 6th, 2025 | ISBN: 0063375699 | 256 pages | True EPUB | 1.28 MB
A captivating and insightful deep dive into the world of human intuition, exploring the power of this elusive phenomenon and how it can be harnessed to better know and trust ourselves.

We rely on our intuition, even though we don't fully understand what it is, how it works, or if we can even trust it. In this fresh, mind-opening book, Elizabeth Greenwood takes us on a sweeping investigation into the subject, exploring how, in our data-driven world, we can harness intuition in our day-to-day lives.
Digging deep into her personal experience as well as insights from neuroscience, psychology, , feminist texts, psychics, and everyday people with extraordinary intuitive ability, Greenwood explores what we know about intuition-how to distinguish it from instinct, wishful thinking, anxiety, and denial; how it serves and sometimes fails us; how it impacts our dreams and unconscious behavior; and how it manifests in everything from romantic attraction to premonitions. Greenwood places a special emphasis on "women's intuition," and how it has been denigrated throughout history-but can offer us a more hopeful, grounded way of experiencing the world in a time of so much uncertainty.
Everyday Intuition provides practical advice on tapping into our self-knowledge and learning to trust our instincts. It examines the science behind intuition, including how our brains process information, how psychedelic medicine and manifestation are opening new doors of consciousness-as well as how these helpful methods are being abused by charlatans, including some "coaches," "teachers," and social media influencers offering false promises-and how we can train ourselves to be more intuitive and ultimately enhance our daily lives.
Smart, funny, sincere, and profound, this helpful guide is a modern take on one of the oldest tools we possess. It shows us how embracing intuition can lead us to our truest, most mindful selves, and to better align the lives we are living with the lives we desire.
